I've rewatched this and something came to mind. One does not build a church alone and not in one day. Where did the stonemasons, carpenters, labourers, cooks et al live while the building was under construction? That must surely have left a mark on the ground?
If it’s just buildings yeah, depending on region and type of settlement you can only hope to find shadows of walls or post holes, or limitation lines of buildings on different soil, rubbish pits and burn pit reactions on EM if it wasn’t destroyed by farming or land development. Even if markings can be found on topographic or aerial surveys, they could be all just vestiges, there also the chance that antiquarians disturbed and refilled ditches in haphazardly, destroying any dating evidence (or when people landscape their gardens in such ways that puzzle archeologists years later, like finding ww2 barbed wire underneath seemingly medieval still-standing walls and such)…
Haha! I noticed that too. There was this big mass of people thundering along behind them as they trotted along. It reminded me of a scene from Monty Python with a crowd thundering from one interesting thing to another, but I can't find it. :p
This is my home town, not seen this one but always wanted to go to the church as just a little further down is also Castle Rising and then further Sandringham house where the Queen spends Christmas
I don’t think you can. There are a number of episodes on Europe-only DVDs, but there is no “Complete Collection” of all 20 years/280 episodes of the show.
The digging itself was broadcast live. Then later an edited episode was made from the recording of the live broadcast. They did several of this type of broadcast.
@@Newman81964 They were editing for a condensed version that was shown that week, at a time when most people watched terrestrial TV channels in the UK and were all aware of the live broadcasts. I imagine no one then was thinking that we would be watching in 2020 and it's a bit late to do a reshoot, don't you think?
Incidentally people often ask why we get Sandy or Bill Oddie on some digs, one of the reasons was the live broadcasts when a presenter was needed at two different sites at the same time. The Jorvik dig was a good example of that. Not that Ms Toksvig needs any excuse to be on my screen.

If it’s just buildings yeah, depending on region and type of settlement you can only hope to find shadows of walls or post holes, or limitation lines of buildings on different soil, rubbish pits and burn pit reactions on EM if it wasn’t destroyed by farming or land development. Even if markings can be found on topographic or aerial surveys, they could be all just vestiges, there also the chance that antiquarians disturbed and refilled ditches in haphazardly, destroying any dating evidence (or when people landscape their gardens in such ways that puzzle archeologists years later, like finding ww2 barbed wire underneath seemingly medieval still-standing walls and such)…
I love all your shows. Thanks
OMG, it took 10 people to follow Mick and Tony around the treches :)))
Haha! I noticed that too. There was this big mass of people thundering along behind them as they trotted along. It reminded me of a scene from Monty Python with a crowd thundering from one interesting thing to another, but I can't find it. :p
Lol the show when Tony got his first hair cut!!!
Enjoy your videos 📹 😊 here to help get your videos out to everyone 😀 please keep them coming can't wait for the new Time Team to start up again 😀
This is my home town, not seen this one but always wanted to go to the church as just a little further down is also Castle Rising and then further Sandringham house where the Queen spends Christmas
Wonderfully done everyone!
Another great episode !
1999, the neolithic of TV. When "aspect ratio" was not yet a thing...
How do you have a Norman Church ruin on your farm? Do you buy it? inherit it? Does it increase the value of your property? Blows my mind
Nah just water the site an"poof" in Britain you get a relic church 😊
Oh, Tony - at 32:35 - never drink from a horn with the point turned up - that's a good way to get doused with the contents!
‘This hill’ he says, showing a slight rise. lol
Once again i ask, where can i order the entire Time Team series on DVD?
I don’t think you can. There are a number of episodes on Europe-only DVDs, but there is no “Complete Collection” of all 20 years/280 episodes of the show.
The updated cause of death on the skeleton with the skull damage is in the TT Christmas Special.
The remains of the stone structure standing proud on the hill is almost science fiction.
Future Dr who episode site😊
Fun to see Helen with symmetrical hair. Later she always has that asymmetrical 'do
Isn'T this the first one with Helen? She looks rather young to me ;)
@@ricardograf6393 Yes, both Helen and Paul (as I found out in this thread)
i wonder why ive never heard james may mention time team... he seems like hed fit right in
Very educational really enjoy these series
Please upload this again but in its original aspect ratio.
At the beginning of the video, Tony says they are doing this live, but this video is only a little under 1 hour long and the dig is 3 days.
It was recorded live, then edited...
@@FrankJPSegura All shows are recorded live and then edited, so why make a deal out of saying it is being done live.
Near the end, that broken piece of a Saxon ceramic loom weight.. I'm pretty sure I'd have mistaken it for a rock. It boggles my mind what these people can see in tons and tons of dirt.
Is there anyone who wasn't living there at one time or t'other?
I can't decide if Stewart was waving in planes or learning to swim! I do love Stewart! He'd be the kind of person I think would be fun to invite to a dinner party.
Very familiar with the term "strap end" (decorative belt-end) from costube, but every single time I hear the term it still somehow always sounds slightly dirty! 🤭 Anybody else??
Yankee commenter here-HOW LONG HAS THIS SHOW BEEN ON? Tony ages and gets younger in each episode I watch, love it all, good thing I don’t live over there, I’d be digging everything up looking for artifacts!😂😂
22 years if memory serves
Isn't it more likely that the horseman was riding towards the man - much more power in a forward slice than a backwards swing?
Seems an easier blow as a backhanded blow more force an control in a passing cut.
A forehand strike I would think a larger area would be aimed for there is more time to aim😊
I want that Mick Aston doll so bad!
Really like this Team 😂🤗😘
Wow! The big hair was rocking!
Somebody hit the wrong aspect ratio on this one?
Helen!! Look how young she was! Teenage almost
32 :) I adore her!!!!
This was her first episode.
Maybe a silly question at 23:40, but given that the compass didn't arrive into the west before 1190, how do you align a church precisely west-east?
the path of the sun and a stick driven into the ground
similar to a sundial
Sun rises and sunsets.
stretching the 4:3 ratio makes the video feel a bit off
SANDY IS MY FAVORITE!! Love when she shows up 😍
I totally disagree. She sadly appears in several episodes, partly or totally ruining them. She is an extremely irritating person. Very bad choice of the production team. Every time she starts rattling away with her nasal voice I immediately think: 'Oh, shut the f*ck off!...
I'd be terrible at this job. I can never see the lines and stains 😢
32:18 That is *_not_* buttered wortes. Buttered wortes are boiled greens. That looks like salted fish or something.
Sandi doing yoga! Brilliant!
Thanks!
Thank you for supporting Time Team!
Looking like some crazy gophers , doing pushups !
Beware of archaeologist who make you do push ups in an empty field!!! Lol
Victor has killed someone with a sword before
"I'm good at rubbing out," says Victor! 🤣 Does that mean the same thing in Britain that it does in America? 😂
No it doesn’t! A rubber is actually an eraser in Brit!
No, rubbing out means to erase something, not what you're thinking 🤣
Is there any hope that some time the extended live shows may be released as videos? I know you had a lot more content then this hour for the show.
You can find them on yt
I love Sandi
I'm interested in the rectangular patterns at 9.28 that is ignored.
I totally forgot that sandi, who does GBBO, also did time team sometimes.
She does QI now, too
love the show but i have to ask ..What do you do with the remains that you dig up? They are some ones ancestor your moving from their resting place.
oh they sell them off at the gift shop..
They are re-interred in the same place where it’s possible. For cases where the site is being destroyed entirely (building sites, rescue projects, etc.) they are respectfully re-interred in appropriate locations.
Tony with hair. I feel young again.
Also, that seriously looks like bad green-screening in the open.
The background music sounds so much like Howard Shore's Hobbit themes. I'm guessing it's (vaguely) medieval, which shows the research Shore put into his composition.
