UK Sailing boat collision, the moment it was caught on camera!
Our boat was crashed into by another boat while we were filming some DIY videos on our blue water sailing boat (CADOHA), whilst moored up on the south coast of the United Kingdom.
The past couple of weeks on our sailing yacht had been spent completing a long list of essential boat maintenance chores for our 1984 Trident Warrior sail boat.
We originally bought our classic old boat up in Scotland and have gradually sailed her down, around the UK, via Ireland, before heading over to England, where we’re currently getting ready before we set sail for the Mediterranean in the spring of next year.
It’s been a challenging year so far, with not nearly as much sailing being done as we would of hoped, thanks mostly to one accident that left Dominic with a broken leg.
Life on the water certainly isn’t without it’s challenges.

What's the worst bump anyone else have ever had in a marina?
2006 leaving berth to take two virgin crew for a gentle motor up and down the river. No sails. I was stern to on the upstream pontoon facing into a springs flood. I checked the way was clear looking across the bows of the larger adjacent yacht. Slipped single handed and rounded out into the marina fairway. As my stern cleared the long neighbour's bow I saw, as usual, the hammerhead that reached across from the end of the down river pontoon. Like double gates with one side closed it made for a narrow exit. It would be a little tricky confined to the non-safe side. But fine, that's normal.
What wasn't was the moron fishing from a small tender hanging off a long line tied to the end of the hammerhead. Effectively closing off the marina fairway exit suspended two thirds across it. In the inflatable, life endangered next to the rrrsole, was a 7/8 year old boy!
I couldn't see them as they were so low and stationary. I shouted at the piece of shite to pull his mooring line in and thus get out of our path. He was positively languid and moved with zero urgency so I couldn't keep way on... Neither of them had life jackets. It's amazing how fast your mind and eyes work when stuff happens.
Due to large vessels either side I had no room to manoeuvre (except reverse) no bow thruster and no way on and ended up across bows including my large neighbour.
Luckily I managed to ram fenders between anchors and my push/pulpits before contact. I called the marina office for help to warp off. Mr Cretin was suddenly gone but luckily for me had been warned off earlier. Nobody would have believed me otherwise.
Don't think my guests ventured forth again.
We were not onboard but some guy got hit by a gust or squall and hooked his Catalina into our davits and princess couch. In the process of getting off, his anchor then became attached to our boat. $6500 later we had a replacement set of barwork. That looks like an expensive hit on your self steering. They aren't cheap.
@@philgray1023 No, they're not at all, the system is bent and shattered in several places, although the guy who's having it fixed has thrown us a bit of a curve ball regarding our replacement options, which we're just working through now. I think it's the time no being able to use the boat more than anything that's annoying when you get hit.
@@ratusbagus It's amazing just how fast a 'casual outing' can cascade into really dangerous situation when you're out on the water. Luckily we haven't been in any of those spots yet, but the amount of stories the old sea dogs we sit and listen to have is certainly enough to make you think twice about being too sure of yourself when you're behind the wheel.
On that note Cadoha and you said it... In a future Video I expect to see a disaster recovery test. Scenario: On a good wind day the last-mate managed to achieve prop wrap, skipper/commodore-of-the-fleet was sorting that out before falling off. Yes. This is a WOB drill!
The old (OK I've just made it up) adage is that your skipper has set a standing order of "if I should pass you at the gunnels, you are to assume the role of Captain". Yes I know this was intended to apply to abandon ship commands (especially Italian) but it's more pointed here.
You must do this under sail without a word, sign, look (or glare) from the subject (because she's not there). You are (OK the BAU Skipper is) allowed to select searoom (including taking account of Carley drift and thus Cadoha depth). Carly can only monitor depth and dangers and abandon the exercise.
The first few times will unfortunately result in drowning or death by blunt instrument bludgeoning (?? tons of Cadoha @greater than half a knot).
The panel will award marks on your head cam footage.
You may need to purchase a head cam. And I suggest a copy of Duncan Wells.
I practise this every 4th(ish) daysail and (objectively-ish rate myself as less than 50/50 at first attempt) its harder without a pointer (wrong dog then).
Practise everything. Not just boat handling. And keep practicing.
So we wait 15 minutes for the climax, and....... nothing. Who did it? how did it happen? did you catch the bastard? what did he say? is he insured? etcetera, etcetera
We did, the guy didn't want to be filmed but was very forthcoming and apologetic and we're just organising a new windvane at the moment.
i always jump ahead ,scan thru, get to the exciting bits. save a lot of time
@@CadohaAdventures you should have submitted the results of that crash if your gonna use it as a feature. glad it wasn't the hull and all is well. ... i can hear the skipper .....new wind vein yay !
geetee50 yeah that's a fair point. Every day's a school day.
We are looking forward to getting the new steering vane installed and set up and also really happy (slightly surprised) that there's no hill damage too 😬🙏🏻
geetee50 haha, Carly here...just reading through the comments, and yes - that was exactly what I was thinking when Dom told me what had happened! 👌🏼
Really enjoying the channel, which I’ve only recently found, but have binge watched from the start. Especially love the self deprecating humour, the raw honesty, the odd bikini shot and Hank’s thought bubbles. He’s an incredibly wise dog!
Re marine toilets, one fundamental principle to understand is the Three P’s: it’s Pee not Poo that causes the Problem!
Urine + saltwater = calcium carbonate, which is much the same as limestone. So calcification of your outlet pipes is inevitable but can be reduced to a great extent by pumping a heap of water through to clear the pipe of all pee EVERY time it’s used. This is a particularly difficult concept for most non sailing guests to grasp, but just keep pumping for ages. And then pump again!
The other thing that helps is to pour a bucket of FRESH water into the bowl, pump it out, without more sea water coming in, repeat and do it every week or so when you have enough fresh water or before you leave the boat for any time (ie a week or more). Leaving vinegar in the system when you leave the boat also seems to help. But even so, you’re still likely to have to take your outlet pipes off every 5-10 years and give them a good whack all up and down their whole length with a winch handle to break off the calcification build up.
You will never get better advice on marine toilets than this. 99% of marine toilet troubles are caused by calcification in the outlet pipes, yet it’s the last thing that’s ever dealt with.
I really like the way you always try to use the correct nautical terminology - it's a very refreshing contrast to many...
We try, although there's still so, so, sooooo much to learn 😳
I was all freaked out by your old pipes until all the excitement began. I'm glad all are safe and the boat wasn't hulled.
Yes we're pretty relieved that the damage wasn't more serious, it could of been much worse if we were moored stern too perhaps?! 🙈
Well done on the beginning, music, the dolphins, music, the unfurling...fantastic!
Glad you liked it, Bart 😁
Having just lost our 10 year old Golden Retreiver watching your beautiful Hank was more painful than the boat collision - a dog, a boat & each other - enjoy everyday because you don’t need anything else other than time
I'm sorry to hear that, Paul 😞, and you're right, of course, nothing in this world more valuable than time.
Great fun video. Appreciate the extra editing effort for the dialogue between you and... you. Fun dog, the comments were spot on. Thanks for sharing in great detail.
Glad you liked it, really appreciate any and all feedback, so thanks for taking the time 😬
I have jut found your channel and have been binge watching since episode 1. I get to 2.51 in this video and I spy you buying yacht varnish (Le Tonkinois - the best) from Mr Brian Murkin. I have not seen Brian for 5 years, I knew Brian when he lived in Battle, East Sussex and we joined the army together in 1964. Really enjoying your story and look forward to following your odyssey over the coming months/years.
I had a feeling that old charmer had seen a fair few sailors in his time and sold his varnish to them. He's very good at his job 😁😁👌🏻
Im glad no one was hurt. Very easy to get bad stuff happening as well.
Very Beautiful i love sailboat 👍
Thanks, we're really fond of the old girl too 😬
Hand rails looking good.
If you are not on board, they run in to you and disappear. You find the damage when you get back. Been there with that one.
We were quite lucky to be in a marina that's hot on the case with these kinds of instances, but I have no doubt that happens a lot, and in our case it was several thousand worth of damage, so really glad I was there when it happened. 😌
Team Cadoha...I love it!!! That should be in your intro every episode ;) I love the talking to yourself...that’s awesome! -Rebecca on SV Brick House
Excellent video guys (apart from the crash obviously). I bet you are relieved to get Hank trained - that takes a lot of hassle out of your anchorages! 🛶 We all make mistakes and it’s good to hear the person who caused the damage is going to put it right. Fair winds and we’ll see you in the Med sometime! 🌅⛵️👍
I'm not sure he's too in love with going to the toilet on the boat just yet, but knowing that when push comes to shove we can get him to go and he doesn't end up with a bladder infection, is a huge relief.
We are planning to head down to the med next season so it'd be cool to cross paths and have a coupe of beers at some point (I love how I say that as if the med is the size of Devon).
Anyway all the best to you guys too 👌🏻
I lost my Vizlsa Laszlo's Botond this summer, Had to put him down on the boat but buried him on a beautiful island, luckily we sail in fresh water but after a roll in mud holes he had the exact same reaction to the jail house shower
I like that it is Captain Carly. She earned here stripes the day she found the starter motor while you guys were all scratching your heads,....and she goes up the mast, as any good captain does. But I know only too well what those head fixing blues are about, and fixing that choked pipe was pretty cool.
William Bunting you're not wrong, she has indeed earned her stripes, that and I also get sea sick easier than she does 😂🙈
New to your channel. Appreciate the maintenance (and doggy) tips as well as humor in tackling it all!
Yikes .... scary collision! Hope everything is sorted out. ⛵ ⚓
Yeah you can tell by my reaction that my heart nearly jumped out of my chest when it happened.
I really appreciate you taking the time to give some feedback, nice to have you here 😬
«Spiffy...» , have you been watching Mads at «Saillife»? 😂
Glad to hear you got the damage to the windvane sorted!
That was indeed a (perhaps not too subtle) nod to the Trident Warrior king that is, Mads! 😬
Great video! Hank is the cutest😊💜
Ha ha, thanks, and yes, Hank is indeed the star os the show. :)
Best wood cleaner ever: TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate)
Cheep and works on all woods. Sanding needed after however, as grain will be lifted: so 80 then 120 then 300+
Teak is oily so best varnished with traditional oil based varnish. not water based stuff.
Put 6 coats minimum, with first two diluted down to barely 15% varnish....work your way up to the last to coats!
Your exterior shine will resist sun caused bubbles that let the water through!
Cheers
André Bériault that's amazing, appreciate these knowledge bombs! 😬🍻
When I see a sailing channel with a dog on board I know they are cool people - subscribed . Oh and filming the accident , you can just blur the faces and boat name to save them embarrassment but still get the feel . Sounds like the guy is a gentleman and ponying up to repair .
I certainly will not jump on a guy for bumping someone as anyone that uses a boat will sooner or later .
The guy was good as gold and we sorted out what needed doing very amicably and quickly.
You are indeed right, the chap was a gent! 😬🙏🏻
@@CadohaAdventures Ya don't jump down the throat of a guy that bumped you as you will one day bump someone too . It was a bad day for him and most guys are honorable .
However beware for the guy that tries to take off .
Bumps at sea? I returned to my boat and could not understand why the port side guard wires running through the stanchions looked slack. It then became apparent that some blue hulled boat had hit the stern and bent the pushpit creating an inch of slack in the lines. The blue matched the hull of a fishing boat that had a tendency to speed through the moorings returning to his berth.
put
such a nice dog.
Hank is the shining star out of the crew, that's for sure :)
That's it dom that dog almost knows what your saying. So the DO in cadoha stands for DOOLITTLE cheers n beers Marty Australia
Hi That wind vane is going to cost a few quid £3,000 plus But you should be ablle to get new parts .
On the sea toilet hose I have in the past removed the outlet hose taken it on deck and using the windlass really whack the hose along its lengh and the scale will fall out then refit the hose will be okay for another 5 years. as you have fitted a new hose make sure you have a good upper loop on it to save it flooding when you are heeled Cheers
Yes you're not wrong, the steering vane is roughly £3000 to replace. The damage is actually more extensive than it looks. Not only is the oval ring shattered, but also the servo pendulum mechanism is bent and only slightly moves now.
The toilet I just changed like for like and put it back together exactly as it was, with a huge loop on the inlet pipe, so fingers crossed for no flooding.
That's for taking the time to give such extensive feedback, really appreciate it 👌🏻
Great video till the end hope things get worked out great dog cheers
Thanks, and yes we're in the middle of getting it sorted right now. I'll be sure to do a more in-depth update on the repair 😬
Summer 2018 we were parked at Sandhamn in Sweden. Late evening when we were already in bed, somebody slammed in our boat. No big damages, maybe a scrach or two, but what a BANG! He came to the berth alone with his boat, some sort of an excuse I admit, but having no fenders ready while doing that... What an id***!
I think our boat was only 5 years old or somehing when we replaced the teak handrails with stainless steel ones. They go all the way from the cocpit to the mast. One of the best investments ever made to the boat.
I always try to remove the sandwich structure from the areas where I intend to thru bolt something. Like handrails for example.
Metal hand rails don't sound like a bad shout in terms of longevity and lower maintenance, although I am loving the wood now that they're coming back to life. :)
One of our Engines blew on our Princess V40 off Weymouth en route to tourquay, the offshore lifeboat took us alongside and hit us and cracked all down the side of the boat! 🤘🏼 they did rescue us though
I guess it's hard to be too angry with the people who've just saved your bacon?! 😬
If you had another engine why did you need rescuing? Just curious.
Mike Mehari because it was a force 6 and one engine isn’t enough to make steady progress against the weather. Plus if that goes then we will end up on the rocks!
Moored in marina minding my own business a mad as a hatter speed boat with two v12 engines reversed into me at speed....massive damage....lost half a season... his insurance was rubbish...luckily mine wasn’t....nightmare and huge expense...doesn’t get much worse than that
Had to search the comments for whats going with the wreck. But other than that great video! Hank is such a cool Dog! He appears to have his own personality for sure. Your yacht is looking nice!
He does indeed. The boat is a very slow work in progress, but I guess that's the trade off with doing the work yourself as well as trying to mix sailing and boat work at the 'same time'.
It feels like a never ending race against deterioration 😂
Hey mate! Watching your vid, do you happen to know the brand of your tan non-skid? I’m weighing options on a refit. Thanks!
I actually couldn't say, it was already laid when we bought the boat. I didn't love it at first, but it's grown on me since we've had her 😬
Hi Dom, I’ve recently discovered your channel & am loving it 👍 HOWEVER, I need to get a few things off my chest...firstly, the bathroom area on a British boat is always the HeadS, plural, NOT singular. The communal area of a British boat is the salOOn. A salon is where women go to get their hair & nails done. Finally, in description of this episode you’ve written would of. Of course, this should be would HAVE. BTW, did you catch the git who smashed into you?
Great video guys
Cheers 🍻
What about a composting toilet?
Well done Hank!!!!! You guys are awesome pawparents!!!!!
Did you ever find out what or who hit you?
We did, it was another sailing boat and it was a sailing boat school with the instructor behind the wheel. To say he was embarrassed would be an understatement, but he paid out and put what was broken right again. 😁
Sailing Cadoha As you travel the Ways of life, and the SEA, you Will find that “Most” Sailors are honest and Will own UP to what they had done. As you continues your journey, I am sure that you will also be as honest as you can be. Then you Will have a clear consience for the rest of your life. That incident looks like it was quite expensive to fix/replace. I am 82 now, not able to fix many things, but I certainly did in my past, I liked the Video of fixing the Head, you will not be doing that again for a while. Good luck.
Can you give us a quick DIY on what you did for the landing handle on your drone?
Yeah there's a video of it on the season one playlist, 'how to land a drone'.
I'm just on my phone at work now but if you can't find it by the time I get back I'll post the link for you.
@@CadohaAdventures Found it! Thanks! Brilliant work.
@@kujon1968 No worries, hope it helps, and credit really goes to Delos for the original idea 👌🏻
@@CadohaAdventures Thanks again. Very impressed with Hank's camera work and how many of these posts you respond to. What a great community.
@@kujon1968 It really is an awesome little community and we've been helped by so many people here, which has been amazing 😁
...... great video, all sorts going on, have to say had a good chuckle at Hanks reaction to the prospect of needing a shower, very impressed with how the first coat looks on the grab rails, had thought they were going to look questionable. ... what a way to show your appreciation of your partner, well done .... what a wallop ... a lot of force to snap something that thick, were you able to check the inside of the stern, or the gel coat, for that to snap would imagine that there was flexing before the breakage, what else was stressed ..... thx for sharing your day on the boat .... have fun be safe, save our oceans ......
Not going to lie, I too thought the hand rails could look questionable, but the sea gypsy in me just had to see if I could give them a second innings.
It was a hell of a bang and I did look at all the through hull attachments from the vane and there doesn't appear to be any signs of damage to the gel coat or body of the boat.
I think following on from several peoples feedback on the video, I'll record some footage of the impact area in more detail, in case anyone else perhaps notices something that I missed, but aside from the steering vane, everything looks remarkably unscathed 🤞🏼👌🏻
@@CadohaAdventures ... I had no doubt that you checked everything, I just mentioned it because sometimes one gets distracted by the blaring obvious .... definite bonus if all is good .... if nothing else it will give you some added footage ..... thx for your reply Dom ...
Peter Frebold not at all, thank you for taking to time to share your thoughts.
We're both super novice sailors and these videos help us learn and reflect (with the help of other sailing enthusiasts who take the time to watch and give feedback), as they are for people to simply watch and (hopefully) enjoy 😊
Hi Dom, good to meet you on Saturday at Hamble, we had a fantastic weekend of racing
Hello again, glad to hear it. You guys looked like you had about the best of the weather so far this autumn!!! 👌🏻
Indeed we did, beautiful sky’s great wind and what a superb sailing area, good luck with all your projects and looking forward to future videos 👍
Andy Start yes it's an awesome area, we feel pretty lucky for that to have been where we first started our sailing, as we're surrounded by knowledge and wisdom, to hopefully help bring us up to speed. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Catch that bastard! Make them fix the wind vain! Great video as always! The rails are looking awesome! Cheers to all!
We're getting a brand new one, so I'm just thankful that the damage wasn't worse and it's the end of the sailing season.
If I was more superstitious, I'd be starting to convince myself that something is trying to keep us off the water 😂
@@CadohaAdventures OK sounds good!
Now for some large G&T's!
Chuck Harp I feel like you know us too well already 😂🍸
@@CadohaAdventures Great minds think alike!
What is the plan for rebedding the handrails. Butyl tape over countersunk holes?
That is exactly the plan, yes, although I need to re-lay some core where one of the rails previously let a load of water in.
Hi there, I'm new to your chennel, only watched up to where you bought the boat so far. One of my favourite channels is Sail Life. You may already know of it, but if not its a Danish Dude referbing a Warrior 38... Super resource and he is getting to know his boat inside out... Hope this helps. Fair Winds!!
Mads is indeed the Trident Warrior king of the interwebs, and we have watched pretty much all of his awesome videos. By the time he's done, I think there will be absolutely now stone left unturned in terms of knowing our way around these boats. I hope to buy that guy a beer or two in the future!
Hope you sorted the damage out and the culprit paid up, great video once again
We did indeed get it sorted, thanks, well I say that, we're in the middle of sorting it right now.
😬
@@CadohaAdventures Glad to hear he owned it.
Enjoy your series, I would also recommend thinking about compost toilets in future. No through hull holes. no more smells, or pump problems easier to use when underway.
I need to look into them some more, I mean we plan to have some really extended cruising, would you be able to find the 'composting solution' in remote areas, how often would you need to empty them etc, especially if you're planning long passes etc.
I was thinking about perhaps having one of each, as we don't have a holding tank on our boat and would need to do something about that when we plan to sail across the pond.
Less through hulls to worry about and less sea cocks to service does indeed sound like a promising move though.
Sailing Cadoha Check out Sailing Kittiwake, they have been using one for a long time and are very helpful.
Andy UK - SY Corrival - Rival 32 yeah I'm seriously going to look into it some more, given that the forward head likely won't be far behind where the aft head was 🤢
Sailing Cadoha Composting Toilets are expensive but to me worth the savings and trouble. Good ones start at £500 to £1200 for good ones. You don’t need to use composting material sawdust will do or as far as I know you can get away without using anything. Lots of good RUclipss on the subject and some from long distance sailors. Good luck
Sailing with Roy Sheriff I will absolutely be looking into them some more, but it seems that Carly will likely need more convincing than me! 😂🙏🏼
what a cute dog
something collided?.... wondering why you chose to not say on camera what the collision was?
I understand the guy didn't want to be filmed n all, but a little more context would have been appreciated.
What kind of market was that? I'm in the Southampton area sometimes and would love to go if this is a frequent event.
It was just a boat jumble sale we found not too far from Southampton, I think it’s on annually, although there seem to be a couple held each year I think?
Interesting episode with boat jobs. Shame about the bump...I wonder how many people cause damage in a mariner and keep quiet?! Lucky you were on board. Looking fwd to the next vid.
We've witnessed several such incidents in the marina over the last few months, so it clearly happens fairly often, but there's also a lot of cctv here and the guys who work here don't miss a trick, so I've also seen everyone get their boats attended to very quickly too.
But in more remote marinas, I imagine all sorts could happen and not get reported. Worrying when you think about it! 🙈😞
The marina guys keep quiet I can tell you especially when they cause the damage.
Shouldn’t poo pipes all go downwards, not up and down? I know ours just go down and down on dry land.
For some systems I think that's fine, but from what I understand about our somewhat simple setup, we need the large arch to stop water back filling the toilet.
@@CadohaAdventures Which wouldn't be good!
Your guys dog is AWESOME....
I suppose you guys are alright too 😉
Ha ha, thanks, we've grown used to Hank getting all the praise 😂

episode oh I hope I never have to replace the poo pipe
Nice video
Sorry you had that happen to your boat. It must've hurt. Lucky you were there. What kind of boat hit you?
Was it springs perchance? You look to be on a S
south berth. Ebbs are treacherous on the Hamble..... Move.
There are a lot of schools and fractional sailing clubs there and we'll it's not that surprising.
The one I've used on and off for 15years pays up (they have to live with their neighbours) then charges extra insurance if members have a prang.
So.....festoon with bow buffers and reverse Dock everytime. Better to present a mind-focusing hunk of iron than expensive fragile equipment.
Glad you're getting a new one.
Ouch for the impact but the dog tray looked hopeful!
The dog tray was suggested by someone in the comments section from an old video, and after trying and failing many, many times, we finally gave it a go, a long with some relaxing .'medication' some more meds to stop a urinary tract infection, waiting 24 hours for him to 'fill up' and then some gentle bladder massaging.
Hopefully it gets easier from here on out :)
Hank gets around very agilely. I watch to see hank! He,s a cool dog. I prefer the company of a dog to 90% of the people I know!!!
Then you'd really love to hang out with Hank, he's such a funny little character :)
Yep had 15 foor open fishing boat hit me cracked the hull under the deck 6 inch split but he paid to fix it because i was on boat and saw him and told him to repair it some time over the winter season
When you think about how fragile those boats really are, and when you see how often people can lose control, it's amazing not to see more semi sunk boats in the marina. Not sure how I'd feel about leaving it for extended periods now.
i remember seeing the last owners having an issue with the loo and some kind of blockage . posted close to when you took it off their hands
Ahhh, we must of missed that episode 😬😂
Well hopefully it'll be good for many years to come now 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Bloody hell hope you got to see what hit you and that they coughed up some dough for the replacement 😳
Hank is awesome!
Ha ha, thanks, we're pretty fond of the little dude, too 😬😬
Opening up the deck that’s a pretty big can of worms.
Possibly, but the core needs replacing where it's rotted out, so can't just leave it 😕
Do you know who ran into you boat, love the dogs comments keep up the good work
We do, yes, the guy who owned the boat which hit us got in contact instantly to sort out a new steering vane.
Would have been very unhappy if we had just arrived at the boat with a £4000 steering vane hanging off the back 🙈
Love Hank, you already know he is the star... Guess the forward head might need doing as probably the same condition 😫. I have bought Le Tonkinois from that same chap, he does all the boat jumbles, top stuff. If you turn up the heat it makes a huge difference to drying time. Gently rub down with a green scourer between coats to just to give a key. The other great finish for teak outside is International Woodskin, Kittiwake/Squa also using it. First time I have not had to keep touching up my toerail since I started using it and so easy to touch up if needed. What a bummer on the collision. Hope the person is insured so you can get your Aries fixed. Parts/spares available in NL. Best of luck guys, love the videos. Andy UK
Yeah I had a sneaky feeling that old boy had been around for a while now.
I'm really loving the product to be honest and am amazed at how well the hand rails are coming up already.
I'm on the fourth coat so far and have been using the scotch pad in between each coat (on the old boys advice).
How many coats do you normally shoot for on an external application?
Sailing Cadoha well I have only used Le Tonkinois on internal items or items like ensign staff that doesn’t stay outside but I gave them 7 coats. When I was in Spirit yachts boat at Southampton the guy said at least 8-10 coats unless you want to be doing it almost every year... That is why I went for the Woodskin as it is even less of a varnish than Le Tonk and so far I have found three coats has lasted me all season so far with boat on a mooring and has had some serious sun this year. A
Andy UK - SY Corrival - Rival 32 I was going to apply 8, so will see how that looks. Although may check out the wood skin once we get through this tin. Three coats sounds appealing!
What would you class it as, more of a thick teak oil than a varnish??
Sailing Cadoha would think 8 would look ok great. As for woodskin, somewhere in between varnish and oil I guess. Advantage is it doesn’t peel off if moisture gets under it of it is knocked. Just touch up and t doesn’t show. I’m sure Le Tonk will be fine with that many coats and will give a great bright finish. Best of luck. A
I dont understand why dogs love to play in the water but act like being rinsed down afterwards is punishment! I do my best to make the rinse fun, but my dogs NEVER like it.
That is indeed one of lifes many mysteries 😂
So what the heck...did you see what hit you????? -Rebecca
We did, it was another sailor who got caught out by the tide. He paid us the cost of a new steering vane and was a complete gentleman about it.
I’m enjoying the videos 👍 it’s an escape from my normal 9-5 I would love to take up sailing but don’t have the finances. Don’t let the negativity get to you with any RUclips channel you will have trolls 😁👍
Glad you enjoy them, Dave.
As for any trolls, I was a ginger kid who grew up on a military housing estate in the 80/90's, ha ha, I've got walrus level thick skin 😂😂
Lol I was also an army brat, spent time in Germany as my farther was in the royal engineers
dave 27875 well that was also part of them problem for me, I was a civilian who lived in a nearby village and got sent to the school on the camp. I was a walking bullseye 😂👊🏻
Another great video! I really enjoy reading Hank’s bubble thoughts 😊
😬
Go to 14:30 and expect an anticlimax
Thanks man, always appreciate some constructive criticism to try and improve the channel.
Best of luck with your channel 👍🏽⛵️
Looks like my guild dog when I showered him lol
Ha ha, Hank just likes getting wet on his terms, no one elses. :)
Watch latest episodes of Parlay Revival they do ALOT of rotten hull repairs
I've been watching a few already but will be sure to check them out too.
Thanks for the heads up. Hope all is good with you?! 🤞🏼👌🏻
The boat that hit you paid for the damage? Expensive!
They are, yes, this literally happens last week, so we're sorting it out right at this moment.
@@CadohaAdventures Good luck. Enjoy your videos...practical and informative and fun. Love the Dog what a beauty.
I just found your site. Beautiful Vizsla, I have a 14 year old that sails with me.
Amazing. Has yours ever sailed particularly far with you?
A 3 day sail anchored out or a dock each night. 12 hours on the water most of those days.
Thom Hadfield we've just got Hank his pet passport (although god knows if it'll even be worth the paper it's printed on after Brexit).
Our biggest concern was him holding in going to the toilet, but we seem to be making some progress there. 😬
Botond will bitch and moan and hold it as long as dogly possible on the boat. The dingy is another story. He has no problem going in that. Well you know how quirky vizslas are. I saw the fake grass. They are smart give them a spot and they will learn. I caution about the bow as he will want to go there when it’s rough. I would try and teach the cockpit then just wash it down the scuppers.
Look me up on Facebook. I shared your videos to some vizsla pages. I can hopefully give you some ideas. I am in the state of Michigan. With the same name on Facebook.
glad hank coming around with head issue, a good habit to form do varnish in the open air some chemicals can get your head the one on your body swimmy did whoever hit you just leave
No he moored up and came straight over to see us, he was very apologetic and we're currently organising the repairs.
It would be a very different story if it was a hit and run, that would be a much more bitter pill to swallow. 🤕
what boat it is van de stad steel ?
The boat is a 1984 Trident Warrior 38, and its GRP 😬
never understood why people want raw sewage systems and storage on their boats >>> composting/desiccating heads solve everything and free up space and storage
Not going to lie, this was an option I gave some serious consideration to at the prospect of ever having to do this job again 🤢
There is an alternative, but marinas and beach crowds don't think much of it.
Come on now, who or what hit your sailboat?
Ha ha, wow you’ve gone all the way back! It was actually a sailing school boat packed full of students, sadly for the school it was the instructor behind the helm! 😳
@@CadohaAdventures I hope the instructor was alright and that the school had insurance.
Yeah everything worked out fine. They paid for a new self steering wind vane. 😬
Hank seems like an absolute sweetie but he is built like long distance runner/hunter and appropriately hyper active - I am sure you guys are aware of that and must be concerned on future long voyages without a land in sight. - - clickbaits are an effective way to grab wandering viewers but a disaster for sustaining long term followers.
We were, yes, although he's super chilled out on the boat whenever we go sailing. He seems to have three very distinctive personalities, in the house, outside, and sailing. We tend to find also that we either need to tire him physically (on say a walk) or mentally, with new tricks, commands and mental stimulation games.
But, yes, we're always concerned about Hank and if he ever seemed to struggle with travelling then we'd have to have a re-think, and maybe Carly would get her house in the mountains even faster than we planned 😁
Glad to see your toilet humor is up to scratch !!
You really need to check the ouside of the transum (spelling??) for any cracks. : ) peace Keep us all up to date please.
Yeah, that's exactly what we thought too. There doesn't appear to be any damage at all to the fibre glass or even the gel coat, internally or externally, which is a minor miracle. We took some pretty detailed footage which will be up in the next video.
We always appreciate an extra pair of eyes (or an extra few thousand extra eyes) on things, so you guys may see something we could have missed :)
@@CadohaAdventures I'm happy to hear of no more damage there's enough work to be done as is on a boat. Looking forward to the next vlog, take care. : ) peace
@@srqlisa7881 You're certainly not wrong there!!! That's for the tips, really appreciate any and all feedback :)
@@CadohaAdventures Well it would suck if I saw a vlog 6 months from now saying you have cracks or whatever and I said nothing. All need to be safe and sound. : ) peace
WTF !!! who hit your boat ? that cast aluminium is really difficult , if at all possible, to weld / repair ,, i guess you had to buy a new piece ,, hopefully the perpitrator paid for the damage , i guess the mounts onto the hull should / must need doing as well . ,, not good.
ok , no need to reply , i have read the comments below and looks like you got it all in hand ,,,,, and , that is one very well behaved mutt you got there now...
roderick mchardy cheers mate, yes, not only that but the servo pendulum mechanism got bent also and only moves with about 30% of its original range, so it's knackered really.
The engineers at Aries said that even if they tried to repair it, the other moving parts would likely fail.
Where? ugh.
I really dislike clckbait titles.
Noted. Appreciate the feedback 🙏🏻
Composting toilet?
One of us so far is seriously considering that as an option for the other head!! 😬😂
Do you have a paypal account for donations to fund Hanks diet?
Hello again, Geoff. Ha ha, well, my fishing skills don't seem to be filling anyones plate just yet, so Hanks diet fund is taking a hit 😂
We don't have a PayPal account, but we do have a tip section for Hank over at Patreon 😁 www.patreon.com/sailingcadoha
You sprung to mind earlier actually as I started noticing areas of woodwork up on deck that I need to attack with the varnish again soon 🧐😬
@@CadohaAdventures Le Tonkinois is a great varnish to use, Brian used to be the sole distributor in the UK, not sure if he still is. www.letonkinoisvarnish.co.uk/. I will sort out some of my pension for a steak for Hank. -:)
Who hit your boat?
It was just another boat in the marina, visiting for the day.
@@CadohaAdventures did they help pay for it?
@@dawnhornsby7215 Yes, they are paying for the repairs, in fact I only spoke to the chap earlier about the replacement of the self steering vane.
He was pretty forthcoming to be honest and didn't try to shy away from what needed doing.
@@CadohaAdventures Good 😆 love your hair😍 God Bless Y'all from Hamilton Alabama 💜
Well I was a subscriber for 15 minutes, not gonna waste my time on a channel that uses click bait to get views!
Appreciate the feedback, Matrix Clone 🙏🏼
Absolutely sick of these CLICK BAIT channels.
Noted. Appreciate the feedback. 🙏🏻
Click bait
Cheers for the feedback 🙏🏻
Terrible video, you have to read comments to find out what should have been in video.
click bait
Point taken, thanks for taking to time to share your feedback. 🙏🏻
Shitty job but someone has to do it
This is very true, and seeing as Carly did it first time around, my time was due :)
Lousy video. Nothing "caught on camera." Will avoid Cadoah now.
Robert Brody we ALL have to Start somewhere. Robert. Don’t be so tough.
Bloody clickbait.
