Lifeforce (1985) was directed by Tobe Hooper, starring Steve Railsback, Peter Firth, Patrick Stewart and Mathilda May.
There's only three things I remember about this movie... That really awesome and better than expected opening theme... A really attractive naked woman... And Patrick Stewart having a really bad day.
It’s campy, disjointed, muddled, and unable to decide what kind of movie it wants to be.
Despite all that, I absolutely love this movie.

I just watched this recently and not only was I excited for where the movie was going but for how insanely ambitious it was! I had a giant smile on my face almost the whole time X)
This movie has multiple personality disorder: space exploration film, aliens invasion movie, vampire movie, criminal investigation, plague film, zombie apocalypse, it’s all over the place and it works! Plus it has a criminally underrated soundtrack.
I saw it yesterday. One of the best movie: you have all-space, alien invasion, vampires, zombies, plague, detective story! A lot religiuos symbolic! Also erotic and love story. And in one movie! It is much better than twillight and walking dead shit!

God, this music was so stunningly good, Cannon just couldn't stop itself from using it in lots of trailers, including RUNAWAY TRAIN. It just screamed EPIC MOVIE!!

The movie wants to be a Quatermass film, and in that it succeeds perfectly - a fantastic blend of sci-fi, horror, and supremely British (with some American cousin thrown in).
This theme is amazing. Damn Henry Mancini, you kicked so much ass!
When I hear this I see Return of the Jedi, The Last Starfighter, Conan The Barbarian, The Dark Crystal, Star Trek The Wrath of Khan and the Search for Spock and the BeastMAster beautiful montage of some great films of the 80s. and of course Time Bandits.

I always loved this theme it sounds heroic and triumphant with the orchestra and all. Henry Mancini rocks
Must say the best seen was, Steve Railsback passionately kissed Patrick Stewart. Forgot about that scene in this film, made me laugh. Who thought that Patrick Stewart would become Jean-Luc Picard. Still in my eyes one of the best productions by the Canon Film Group.

one of the all time underrated soundtracks. Hard to believe the same guy wrote the music for Moon River and Pink Panther. :o
He also did The White Dawn, Condorman, The Great Mouse Detective, Nightwing etc... Mancini was quite versatile and did a lot more then lounge elevator music.
He also did the music for Tarantula under a different name for some reason.,

Mr Mancini died (June 14 1994) the day before the lion kings theatrical release (June 15 of that year).

I saw this movie back when it was first released and I was in high school. My assessment then, which I stand by to this day, is that there were only two things great about the movie: the Henry Mancini theme, and devastatingly beautiful Mathilda May.
I saw it either opening day or opening weekend. And I definitely agree with you, although I wasn't really a fan of the score initially.
The Ending made me emotional as I really wanted Carlson to survive the chaos happening all over London, but realised that he was the only one able to destroy the Alien Queen as he was chosen as her offspring and had to sacrifice himself to lift the curse.

I just watched it again. They do not show them kissing. They suggest that it will happen, but it is not shown. I't's on Encore On Demand for free, so I've been watching it, having not seen it for many years. We went to the drive-in to see it way back when, so it looked quite spectacular at times. Unfortunately, Halley's Comet was a washout. *sigh* Magnificent Mancini! I LOVE this movie theme! It's like something out of old Hollywood.

There are plenty, but the first scene that this theme shows up in is the assassin battle when the protagonist reaches the Friendly Arm End. Search "Baldur's Gate Ost Attacked by Assassins" to hear the theme.

This was a seminal Sci-Fi Horror film, first class. "We have been given the ok to proceed with sterilization via Thermonuclear explosion...." One of Hooper's best films. Should be rated NR - 17 (or whatever the precise designation is, the step preceding X) .... or X. This film ended the great age of Horror in American Cinema (c. 1970 - 1985).

True - That line is one of the most badass lines ever. One of my two favorites along with the Colonel in Man of Steel "A good death is it's own reward" when he dives that plane into the ship.

In the UK release the Lifeforce theme was not heard until the end credits. The opening credits had different music that version I saw at the cinema in 1985
This is taken from the international version. The Uk and American versions got by a completely different intro.

They don't have anywhere near the balls or ovaries in Hollywood to make movies like this anymore. Yeah it's bat shit crazy but it works because it just doesn't care what you think of it. Sit back, grab the beer and popcorn and be entertained. Colin Wilson really did himself a misjustice by not embracing how ambitious this movie was. It went where his book was to scared to go.

Tommy Udo Remake...!? I do not think one can improve on a near perfect movie, especially for the time. A sequel is more proper: as Halley's Comet returns to the Earth. This is not expected until circa 2066... Perhaps then we will have a new film:

If memory serves, the original novel upon which "Lifeforce" was based, namely Colin Wilson's "The Space Vampires," had a sequel of sorts. So who knows.

Lifeforce is mind numbingly enjoyable. The first hours v.good. Then it becomes an edited mess. There were scenes they didn't film but scripted and much edited. It does prove that throwing millions at a film from the score to the sfx still means that even if you gold plate a turd, its still a turd. It was originally filmed and going to be marketed as 'The Space Vampires' but Canon wanted to distance from its usual schlock by renaming it 'Lifeforce'. Good music though.
Just FYI, "Space Vampires" was the purposely cheesy name of the rather intellectual Colin Wilson science fiction novel upon which "Lifeforce" was based. I read it years before the film and enjoyed both thoroughly. The book is more subtle yet even more elaborate. Of course, showing inner thoughts and motives is harder to do in a film.

If by "soundtrack" you mean the main theme (as heard above), it is on "Star Tracks 2" (TELARC) and "Space and Beyond (Vol. 1)" (SILVA SCREEN). Both recordings are very good and easily found.
