No Heat Boiler Won't Fire Munchkin F09 Lockout

  • I am on a no-heat service call and the boiler won't fire up. I test it a few times and it won't fire up for me. I notice the boiler's swirl plate was deteriorating. I pull the burner to verify the burner tube condition is good. I also tested the spark plug. Once I pulled the fan off I found the swirl plate was busted worse that I thought.

    exactly why I wont be installing a complicated high efficiency boiler... Good vids!

      I been saying that for years. I bought a house that doesn’t have a chimney. The boiler uses an inducer and vents side wall. I noticed a lot of rust under burners. Most likely condensation. If I had a chimney I wouldn’t consider a hi efficient boiler. Hopefully I don’t have to replace this boiler for some time. I should most likely do a good service on it, just been too busy with working on he garage

    Mine had this problem. I had an hvac guy out to diagnose. They told me flame sensor. I swapped it and it didnt work. They told me if not flame sensor- then control panel. I didnt fall for it. Loosely wrapped a dish towel around this part to allow less airflow and it fired up the first time. Amazing this little piece of swirling non mobile plastic was their engineers answer to proper air flow- then again my unit is 16 years old. The part is disintegrating. Thanks for the video- helped me immensely.

    I solved my 140M problems (F09). Here's the key: make sure the NIT screws are removed and shiny clean with a wire brush for each maintenance. This ensures proper grounding. Also, make sure the exhaust and intake are properly separated outside. If not properly separated, exhaust gas is pulled in and chews up the swirl plate, and throws off combustion. I added an extension to the exhaust. The original specification for intake/exhaust separation may not be good enough. If one stays on top of the maintenance, these boilers run very well!

    Have turbo water heater at work that has same set up but plastic swirl. Had to replace twice in 5 years do to busting. Course you have to replace the whole part, not just swirl. Thanks for posting.

      I prefer to go back and complete my repairs. I had to hand the parts off to another tech. I was locked up on a maintenance in a 30k sq ft home and couldn't hand that maintenance off. Too much wasted time. It would take me two hours to show my coworker where everything is hidden. Due to a coworker not noticing the swirl plate deteriorated. I should still post this so other techs, hopefully catch the plastic breaking down on that swirl plate. Before it causes failure.

    I had this issue before, you need to pipe exhaust above intake and the max distance of 3 feet. If not you will recirculate corrosive exhaust gas back into intake and the swirl plate corrodes like in your case

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  4 года назад

      It’s exhausted correctly. I seen this code way too often. A plugged drain will kill the flame signal, swirl plates also dry rot on their own, bad electrodes, dirty rods, possible exhausted incorrectly. Yet if exhausted incorrectly and drawing back in exhaust fumes all the gas gets really rusty and aluminum also gets signs of corrosion. Munchkin been out of business for over 10 years. Back 2005 I use to hate running into these. Usually busted plastic blower wheels

    Boiler sounded like a truck "jake breaking" past my house because of this issue. $33 part at the time. Plumber charged me $700.00 and failed to fix the issue. Found and fixed myself after reading parts diagram and talked the bill down to $200.00. They did after all do some routine maintenance. A few days later the noise began again and my heart sank. Turned out to be an actual truck "jake breaking" past my house from a construction site above. They are no longer permitted to do this without being fined $$$$$.

    U like that old style manometer?

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  4 года назад

      I prefer using the Magnehelic gauge over the manometer. I am giving a digital manometer a chance, Just got this one. The around the 8-minute mark the true response of the gauges shows ruclips.net/video/WjS0WuxSD6I/видео.html

    • @pineychristian
      @pineychristian 4 года назад +1

      I had a nat gas boiler system on a low pressure main and customer got water up inside meter. The inlet gas pressure would change soo fast because of water blocking inside gas meter then making pass water that a digital manometer couldn't pick up the change in pressure. So it's good to have the old analog gauge sometimes. I do own two digital manometers as well.

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  4 года назад

      JJ check the vid link on my comment to Nathan. Its on my other channel. It shows the response rate difference. The digital manometer I just bought wasn't cheap, yet at least i can adjust pressure switches with it. I am going to give it a chance. What made me stop using digital almost 10 years ago I had a gas gun that was acting up. It was an oil boiler converted to gas. The pressure switch was .15"w.c. The air baffle wasn't opened enough. The digital made me believe it was the pressure switch. I returned with switch. Still didn't work. The analogy showed the fluctuations causing the switch to open. All i needed to do was open the air baffle one rotation.

    Do you need to drain them or no. Thanks

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  4 года назад

      No need to drain a hot water boiler. A hot water system fresh water introduced should be minimal. Steam systems require the draining since it’s rust from inside the pipes, radiator and boiler that forms mud at the bottom
