A big part was when they refused John Deacon a loan for a house. You don't mess with Queen's baby brother without the older brothers especially the eldest brother getting extremely pissed off
You are spot on! It was written by Freddie about Norman Sheffield who was their manager who royally ripped them off. He was driving around in a Rolls and they were on about 20 quid a week. Roger needed new drumsticks but he told him no. All sorts went on…there’s a long list. Anyway, he made a mistake of getting on the wrong side of Freddie didn’t he? They got a new manager soon after….John Reid. Love the song…not just a diss track, more of a full on assault! Don’t mess with Mr Mercury! 😂
Freddie wrote another song about their manager, "Flick of the wrist" - great live performance at the Rainbow 1974. Freddie really hated that guy 😄 Not only because of the money, Roger said Freddie felt like Norman Sheffield didn't respect him and his talent.
But in his memoirs Norman wrote Freddie was difficult to work with but he was a genius. They were all very young and feeling their way. I think Norman knew he made a mistake as he said I should have taken their feelings more into account. Also I believe if Freddie wasn’t so pushy they never would have gotten where they did.
Fun Fact: In EVERY live show, at some point Freddie would turn his back to the audience and give that "kiss my ass" bow... That was always a "kiss my ass" gesture to Norman Sheffield, the guy to whom this song is written.
The Sheffield brothers had Queen on salary of about 20 quid a week for the first 3 albums. Freddie didn't get any songwriting royalties for his hits Seven Seas of Rhye or Killer Queen. They were in heavy debt. They got John Reid to break them out of the contract and manage them in 1975. Freddie put all his venom into Flick of the Wrist and Death On Two Legs(Dedicated to...). At one point Freddie was so angry he wouldn't write anymore. Probably when they wouldn't give John an advance on his salary when he wanted to buy a house for his wife and new baby. It stops so abruptly because the songs run into each other a lot on this album. Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon comes next which runs into I'm In Love With My Car. Freddie used to say he found it hard to write lyrics but I think these came easily!
Yep was dissing Sheffield Bros (as many here have explained) …. To add to this the reason Freddie does the show his bum thing in all live performances is directly “kiss my ass goodbye” And i think he took great delight in doing that right to the very end …. Really rubbing in the message they missed out on a fortune by skinning Queen in their early years! 👑❣️👑❣️👑
Ohhhhh yeah, never piss Freddie off!! The very first diss song...again pioneers Queen are (a bit of Yoda there 😁) The intro melody is sooooo good, the darkness of it...it really sounds like a shark ready to attack I almost feel sorry for the ex-manager... NOT!!! But now you can kiss my ass goodbye...How many times, lord, how many times??? Amazing reaction David, and thanks for this one, you rock.
They had to pay a lot to get out of their contract so they were in a lot of debt. John Reid said now go and make the best album you can. Then came NIGHT AT THE OPERA.
Remember the first time I heard it.I was bumping into lamp posts reading the lyrics after buying night at the opera on my way home !! .....the anticipation David! Love it !! superb track.....boom ! and then some 🤣🤣🤣
Flick of the Wrist came first. It was years before I understood that if referred to the signing of a contract. Then Death on Two Legs, with the guitar sounding just as angry as Freddie's voice. Brian had some reservations about putting out this song, but Freddie was adamant. They were eventually sued and it cost them. They were getting out anyway under John Reid's wing.
The fact that he literally told someone to kill themselves in more than one way, just… wow “Do you feel like suicide (I think you should)” “Make yourself null and void”
I love the kick ass attitude of this song. When you see Freddie at live shows moon the crowd, he is actually mooning this guy, Norman Sheffield, Queen's manager, who screwed the band and stole all their money. Never F with Freddie, you will never win.
John Reid and Jim beach helped them sort out the mess Night of the opera was the first time they had royalties Freddie stayed friends with Reid when he was no longer their manager But when he was Freddie did loose his temper with him once and threw a brick through his window! John was cross Freddie did an interview and left him in the resteraunt! That didnt go down well!
Jack that Back.... Death on two Legs. I think the "kick my a$$ goodbye" is replayed at their concerts when Freddie turns around and sticks his butt in the air for the old managers can kiss it. That's right, look at us now.
If you hear this song and the next song (lazing on a Sunday afternoon) in a row you get an impression of the variaty of the band. You can get a similar effect listening to white man and true lover boy on the next album (A day at the races). By the way, you didn't already react to white man. But you urgently HAVE TO. You'll agree when you hear it. One of the few underrated really great songs you missed, yet.
Your reactions are so genuine and you're so into every note and lyric. It's what makes your videos so fantastic to watch. I just love genuine and down to earth reactions, and you're doing a great job, David! I'm always excited to see new content of yours in my feed. You nailed it about the diss; it was with his management getting rich off of the band, whilst the band were all still in pretty shabby financial shape, so they got sick of it, found new representation, and this was their kiss off song, if you will? .
That's what most Queen fans love their honestly an some how knowing the future ! Love watching you I don't watch anyone else any more ! Keep doing what you love which is Music 🎵🎶🎶🎶🎵🎶🎵 right on Mays the Gods be with you ! PEACE my Brother
Great song and for its time very vicious in terms of lyrics . LIVE it becomes more nasty in how Freddie sings it still with hatred towards his manager , bet they are kicking themselves now . All those royalties missed out on because they treated them so badly
When Norman Sheffield died in June of 2014, Queen's official RUclips page released the song on their channel of September of 2014. Brian May and Roger Taylor most likely did this as the last middle finger to rub salt in the wound. That was 100% intentionally done on purpose.
As already mentioned,, you should see this one live,, looking forward to some Floyd, hard to know where to start there😂,,i have mentioned The Doors and Pearl Jam before for when you expand,,
Love your reaction, as posts before yess it was the major dis song. Also when you see Freddy in concerts bending over mooning the crowd that also is directed towards the ex manager.
Freddie wrote this song about thier old management at Trident Studios. They got so pissed they sued over it. I don't know the outcome of the court case though
Now you have to do 'Flick of the Wrist' which was written, and released, while under the management that this song was aimed at, its meaning will be clearer. I carefully used the word 'aimed' as this is a weapons-grade diss-track.
...theyr managers who ripped them off.. they drove around in Mercedes and Freddie couldt have a piano and Roger have to be carefull with his drummerstics... he was pissed !!
I tried editing the title to TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE but my iPad froze. So thanks for adding that which is a better version. Just F and the piano. What more can one want. It’s like the Hyde Park version of YOU TAKE MY BREATH AWAY. Just F and the piano . What balls! In front of a crowd of 130,000 or more he quiets the crowd with one finger and sings with all the emotion as if he was at home singing it for himself.
@@janetschulman7649 some of the best live moments includes Freddie on the piano. I think Time is worthy of a reaction too. I do like the way the over the top harmonies just build up during the song. Would love a double reaction so that he can compare the 2 versions.

every line hit spot on. Freddie didn't mess around.
Freddie wrote another song about their manager, "Flick of the wrist" - great live performance at the Rainbow 1974. Freddie really hated that guy 😄 Not only because of the money, Roger said Freddie felt like Norman Sheffield didn't respect him and his talent.
Oh, yeah - thanks, Jane -- I also thought of "Flick of the Wrist" - lol
But in his memoirs Norman wrote Freddie was difficult to work with but he was a genius. They were all very young and feeling their way. I think Norman knew he made a mistake as he said I should have taken their feelings more into account.

Freddie said he was feeling such anger (towards their former manager) when singing this, he made his throat bleed.
Fun Fact: In EVERY live show, at some point Freddie would turn his back to the audience and give that "kiss my ass" bow... That was always a "kiss my ass" gesture to Norman Sheffield, the guy to whom this song is written.
Sheer bloody poetry.
The ultimate DISS song - and done with real venom and Freddie meant every word.

They had to pay a lot to get out of their contract so they were in a lot of debt. John Reid said now go and make the best album you can. Then came NIGHT AT THE OPERA.
As hard as they worked I can’t imagine the anger and hurt they felt and his boys were hurt.

Was this the manager that wouldn't let them include "mad the swine" because it had too much Bongo rhythm? I like that song.
So he didn't want the band to do anything that sounded too ethnic? Would it be fair to suggest that he was, on top of everything else, a racist?
