years ago we had a local streamer who hosted a small event for new players (requiring that accounts must be less than 1 month old) and more than half of the matches were just smurfs. the requirements is a nice thing to stop them, but when theres a will theres a way.

To be fair, malediction and his ult is busted. Unless there's a good escape or a stun you're done for.
As someone that got into dota in 2020 (herald but mostly play unranked all pick) I can give some context for the mid-support thing. I play pos 5 or 4, heroes like CM, Dazzle, Snapfire, Lich, because their abilities are easy to understand, and I basically play the same game every time. I buy wards, smokes, and healing items, I don't farm because I'm terrible at last clicking, and if I die in a fight thats fine because I know my positioning is awful.
All that said, I've played more mid games than I'd like to admit, because Herald is full of players like me that simply cannot flex. When I play mid CM, I frostbite the enemy mid and deny as much as possible, using Crystal Nova to try and steal last hits or push once I have some levels. Then I switch into support and try to ulti top or bottom lane to kill the carry. I only ever do it if I get to safe lane and find another support hero refusing to move. Nobody at my rank likes playing mid because its hard. If we lose safe lane, it could be any number of reasons, there were four people involved. If I lose mid? Thats on me. The other guy was better, and they always are.
lmao i remember i had a match a week ago where I was playing troll and (surprisingly for unranked) everyone else picked support heroes, we forced the willow to go mid (I was egging him on telling him that it was a TI pro strat and he'd do fine) and he got bodied 😂😂😂😂😂
