Squirrel Wars - Electric fence bird feeder

  • The squirrels are defeated from the bird feeder using a low impedance electric fence energizer and electric fence wire. The energizer is sized for small garden animals. NEVER connect directly to household current as this can be fatal to both animals and people. Also see the short version of the video • Squirrel Wars2 (short ... Copyright 2012 Tom Schendel
    Notes about building this feeder.
    A tall pole and baffle are a more effective choice for keeping squirls off a feeder. Unfortunately for us, anywhere that I could put a feeder with a baffle 6’ up and clear for 10 around would be difficult to see from our house.
    To build the feeder, I picked up a small electric fence energizer and electric fence wire from a local Farm store. Note the fence energizer works by touching the energized wire and ground. On my feeder I ran a second wire on the feeder connected to a grounded rod to complete the circuit.
    You need to run two wires to and around the feeder. One wire will come from the electric fence energizer. The other will act as a ground wire. The energized wire and ground need to stay far enough apart that a bird will not touch both wires, but close enough that a squirrel will contact both. On my feeder I started with one side of the feed tray being energized and the other is grounded. I thought that after one shock a squirl would never come back. But squirls are very smart and determined. They would sit and study the feeder and try again knowing what not to do again. And some would figure out just where to sit and step to get past the wires and eat from the feeder. Then I would make changes to wire layout to make it harder to bypass. I’m not sure I was ever completely successful keeping the squirls off but making sure the birds would not be shocked.
    I would not mind feeding the squirrels because they are somewhat fun to watch. It’s also not the cost of the feed, it is the fact that they would empty the entire contents of the feeder on to the ground in a day to get to the few nuts or seeds that they wanted wasting 90% of the food and making a huge mess.

    I saw a video of a similar setup but it was powered by 2 stun guns! Believe it or not the squirrel didn't even jump, he just went stiff. I used to think they were cute, but knowledge changed that. When a critter costs you thousands in damage they're not cute anymore!

      The Havahart model 1083 EZ-set trap is the best solution for a grey squirrel problem.
      I've disposed of 560+ since 2014 and they still come to my yard.
      And then I feed them to scavengers. Win-Win

    MD... I have done this myself. To protect the birds, you space the charged & gnd conductors properly for the squirrels body size. Haven't yet seen a bird jolted, only the critters. You can space the conductors across the roof top also.

    Squirrels may be fun to look at but there are destructive rodents the other house that we lived in they kept digging out the shingles so they could get into the attic and they destroyed the top two layers of the chimney by digging out the bricks they also destroyed part of the neighbor's roof on the other side jumping from the tree onto the roof and making some massive leaks however prepared properly they are very very tasty

    I actually would not mind feeding the squirrels because they are somewhat fun to watch. But unfortunately, they would empty the entire contents of the feeder on to the ground in a day to get to the few nuts or seeds that they wanted. They were also territorial and would chase away anything else that came along. The birds do spill a small amount of food so it is still common to see squirrels on the ground around the bottom of the feeder.

    I think you like playing with these bright eyed rodents that come with big beautiful bushy silver tails. As long as they keep coming back for more you know you are not hurting them. These little guys are really tough. Check out squirrel attacks deer on youtube. Fortunately they normally do not attack people. They are incredibly strong for their size, are lightning fast, have razor sharp teeth and claws and you definately do not want one in your face.

      I watched a squirrel and hawk fighting on a fence a couple of years back... the squirrel "won" so the hawk took off to a tree top. Stupid squirrel instead of leaving the scene started scavenging about 10 feet away. Swoop and the squirrel was a hawk's dinner for the night.

    To the naysayers...before I energized the feeder, a squirrel(s), can empty or destroy a feeder in a day, every day. This way, they adapt to ground feeding on the bird spills & everyone is happy.

    Squirrels are easy. Just make everything big enough, feeder at least 5.5 feet up, 60 degree cone under it at least 3 feet in diameter and nearest object from which to jump at least 10 feet away. It may take a few days for them to give up and settle for bird spillage on the ground, but you want them there to keep rats and mice from getting it at night.

    I have a small fence charger from TSC
    I have about an 8 foot 2x6 mounted horizontally with several feeders hanging from it. so i have a wire that runs from the positive terminal along the top of my 2x6 , and then a wire that runs from the ground termina.
    I have another wire that runs from the ground terminal and it is space along the first wire (mentioned above) about 1 inch apart so that birds are okay but squirresl would touch both and get a jolt. That doesnt seem to be the case. am i on trk?

  • @USSTOLEDOSSN769
    @USSTOLEDOSSN769 5 лет назад +1

    Squirrels don't need to eat bird food. If a squirrel is hungry enough, he'll eat anything from a mouse to a small snake, even insects. I hate squirrels with a vengeance. These destructive pests can get into your attic, chew up the electrical wiring and burn your house down. Think about that the next time you see a cute little squirrel running around in your backyard.

    When I was growing up, we had a pasture for horses and steers. Our electric fence charger had a feature called 'weed burner'. When grass or weeds got too tall and made contact with lower conductor wire, a arc formed and 'burned' vegetation. System was on 1/2 second, off 1/2 second. During on cycle, it was 100 percent on for full 1/2 second. It kept our animals in and weeds short. Grab it and you can't let go until off cycle. It really stung. I forget voltage, but is was really high and the amps low. If there was a short someplace, finding it was easy, just listen for the arc at point of short. Oh yeah, don't forget to turn it off or bring jumpers to bypass section needing work.

  • @tootired76
    @tootired76 10 лет назад +4

    I installed one of these myself!! Works better than I expected! Ts is correct! DO NOT connect normal household 110 voltage to this!!! Someone or something WILL die if you do! Go to Casa.com and search for Fi-Shock. This is a small animal and pet electric fence energizer. It steps up 120 volts ac to over 900 volts! But when 120 volts is stepped up via a transformer, a lot of the amperage is lost! Amperage is what kills! When a marauding animal touches the hot side and ground side all they get is a painful jolt and that is it! They learn in a hurry! I should have thought of this years ago because I don't like shooting and killing animals unnecessarily! Before I installed it, I'd have to replace a suet block every 3 days or so. I Installed the shocker 2 weekends ago. The same suet blocks are still there! Only the woodpeckers eat it now!

      This guy doesn't understand how destructive these tree rats are. They are considered vermin and are lucky that they didn't catch a pellet from my 1000 fps Gammo air rifle. I say it's nice to have a fur lined dumpster (except for the smell lol).
