Peter Dovey Not sure if you know by now but here it is:
He plays in D Standard, which is a whole step down from the basic tuning of E Standard. With that in mind, the chords he plays on this song live are D, Em, and G. The way he is fretting the G here is x5535x which is essentially the E-shaped G chord without the barre.
Fun fact, he plays this song down a whole step live, whereas the record version is in E, a whole step up. Understandable, given that it’s a vocally demanding song with lots of reverb and vocal layers.

can someone explain to me how he's playing what would normally be a G shape chord? is he in Drop D (drop C in his down tuning)? Confused. Its a D shape, then Em shape, and then it sounds like a G but his hand is index is on the 4th fret from his capo? wth.

@@who7063 bc I am a musician also the chords are D, Em, Gmaj7, I know the his fingerings he’s using are different because the low e is dropped to a D. that’s why he’s playing 2nd fret on the lowest string during the 2nd chord, he’s playing an Em there but the low e is now a D thus 2nd fret.

6th string tuned down to D. So it's just G chord, but the G is now on the 5th fret of the 6th string.
I'm pretty sure the whole guitar is tuned down a whole step from concert, and a dropped D. So, in this performance, the chords are: C Dm F

Modern Vice I think it's simpler than it looks. He tuned his guitar down to drop D so he is just playing a G power chord.
555xxx or 355xxx in standard tuning.
Also looks like he is using his pointer finger on the G string on the 4th fret sometimes but I'm not 100% on the timing.

They play the live version as C - Dm - F - F. His guitar is tuned down a whole step, AND he has the bottom (fat) string dropped another whole step. The Pure Comedy album version is in concert tuning with a dropped-D, so the chords on the album are D - Em - G - G.
