“Thank you John” -Stephen Colbert to Father John Misty
dead
He got the first two letters right, at least
Lol like I know you never liked the names Joshua. You got tired of J. How bout John?
@@albertrobinson6018 golden reply here folks
I caught that myself.
One of my favourite voices of all time.
He reminds me of James Taylor.
@@batirtzeurkiaga1716 Hmmm... to me, JT has a quality that's much more unusual and identifiable than what I hear in FJM--a bit more brassy, a bit like Willie Nelson. Here, I was reminded more of Jim Croce (when he's singing a serious, rather than a novelty, song). Or... Harry Nilsson! ("Everybody's Talking")
one night at a bar i asked the dj to put a FJM song. when the song started i did not recognize it so i said to myself "he put a new one". when it finnished i asked to the dj, "it was a new one?", he said "no man, it was a Elton John's song". "No way???" FJM voice is extremely like Elton John's voice. try the EJ old material, close your eyes and you'll see for yourself... amazing!!!
this guy is literally a genius isn't he...
well it´s literally not that
@@johnentwistle952 ha!
@beep boop why would you say, no?
@@shannonglass2057 I imagine an extremely low level of self esteem. FJM is otherworldly amazing.
She says, like, literally, music is the air she breathes
And the malaprops make me want to fucking scream
Josh deserves all the credit he gets for this beauty but holy smokes that bass line by Elijah Thomson is impeccable.
I know!! That is always one of my favorite musical moments.😍
It takes time to unravel a Father John misty song. So cleverly written.
His music is getting more beautiful and refined with age.
I just found him! Wow
@@kathleenmatagulay1462 he was the drummer of Fleet Foxes and J.Tillman soli
@Jason Ablah thank you 🙏
@@kathleenmatagulay1462 Listen to Fleet Foxes, also J.Tillman was him solo he took on a persona as FJM his first two albums are great
@ Jason Ablah I will thank you. I’m always looking for new good music 🎼
One of the best songs ever written about putting on shoes.
Why?
@@realityjunky Why?
@@TheseOpenRoads Why is it one of the best songs about putting on shoes?
@@realityjunky It just is. The reviews are in.
You heard it here first.
Reminiscent of Harry Nilsson singing Everybody's Talkin.
There's a number of songs this sounds like - but the humming is a straight copy of whatever it is. It's driving me mad bc I can't place it.
I missed the Misty. Flat he's back.
Not just that one, several others of his come to mind "Me and My Arrow", "Beautiful World", other titles I don't remember...
To me it most closely resembles "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City" (which itself was an homage to "Everybody's Talkin'"). The theme suggests it might also be inspired by "Last Morning" by Dr. Hook/Shel Silverstein. I love all those songs. This one's tasteful but rings a bit hollow. Still rooting for the guy.
Yes!! sounds very similar to ruclips.net/video/55xQu9eIPIA/видео.html
Yessss! And thank you for reminding me of 'Everybody's Talkin'
This song NEVER fails to get me all misty eyed
A voice like Harry Nilsson and lyrics of loss that break over you like a wave of pain.
The comparisons to "Everybody's Talkin' " are inevitable. Regardless, Misty has an amazing voice that transcends all genres. Voices like this only come around every so often.
@@stooge81 Not often enough...this beautiful melody is absolutley SENSATIONAIL!!
And all about the death of a cat…
@@sharontesta5720I mean, yeah, it IS. Nicely worded. Because it IS.
The best modern artist right here. Such classic sounds
Just had to say goodbye suddenly to my cat. Love those around you with your whole heart. The last time comes way too soon. Rip Uni
rip uni, kitties are angels ❤
Cats leave footprints in our hearts. My screen name is that of the first cat that I had who died.
It has taken a few listens over the last day to really hear this song... such a departure. I dig it.
He's embracing a Glen Canpbell + sad 70's ballad vibe here. Only this Misty Tillman can make that work for me.
I was getting some Jim Croce vibes from that beat.
@ghost mall YES! Good call.
I was looking for hours to find that humming section.
@@silentjay01 I concur. Right on.
About 1/3 of the music, and much more of the spirit is pure Harry Nilsson, Jr writing. Great writers and performers ALWAYS steal from the greats who went before (this is not a dig, you have to actually be GOOD to understand how others' work is good to steal successfully)
Kristofferson, Jackson Browne, Jim Morrison, ...
My God I was just thrown back to my childhood (I'm 41) and listening to what my parents were listening to but somehow very new! Love it!!
I took my mom to see his “I love you honey bear” tour in 2015 and it was the highlight of her year that year… I heard this new track on Spotify last night and might know why it’s so familiar sounding 🧐 maybe this song here->m.ruclips.net/video/55xQu9eIPIA/видео.html
Had the EXACT same thought when I first heard this….thought I was in the backseat of the car as a kid…..
He’s lucky that certain
Usocians aren’t getting a big up there butt about it because I was singing Fleetwood Mac’s you could talk me to paradise in the beginning
Our beloved dog is slowly dying of cancer so this song really hits home. Every time could be the last time.
A very wise man told me, "Sharing your joy multiples the joy. Sharing your grief divides the grief."
Thank you for sharing.
“Dead dog love song John”
I've been in the same place you are now. Very hard. And I had the same reaction to this song. I have no idea why so many of the comments seem clueless about the lyrics. I wish you peace through the difficult journey ahead. That dog is lucky to have known you and I'm sure he/she appreciates the care you're giving.
@@realityjunky -Thanks for understanding me and FJM's lyrics.
@@sinnertrain7405 It's my honor. This is a difficult but necessary thing that you're going though. Living without pets is very different. I worked with a woman who never got over her first loss. She always seemed sad. When I've had losses, I found pets who were rescued from really bad situations and that gave meaning to my life. Everyone must do what is right for them. I hope your future holds a lot of happiness.
I feel like FJM is channeling the last 13 months of my life. I didn't realize all of the moments that were the last times before my boyfriend died last year. Now I remember the last time we bought that expensive cat food, the last time we had coffee, the last time we made love, and most of all, the last time we put on FJM and danced. #RIPJAY I know you're listening to our favorites right beside me, just on the Other Side. Until we meet again my love, 🧡🦋🧡!
❤❤
Damn, the chicantique--ouch. I thought my heart was breaking from the song, but that was *nothing* compared to your story. So touching. I hope the joy you find in his memory continues to stifle the pain until peace is all that's left.
@@steveb.4532 awe, thank you!! I'm trying to find that peace. Your words were touching! 🧡🧡🧡
Oh wanted to send you a virtual hug...x much love

This is a departure for him. I like the early 70's "Me and Bobby McGee" vibe with mellow vocals..
Takes me back.
Colbert does it again with another great artist/performance.
(Read my above comment)-- Yep! I hear Kristoferson in there, too... Tillman's got it!
Merle Haggard is what I hear. Kristofferson too though, now that you mention it
I heard Bobby McGee too, so groovy
One of the greatest artist alive right now cannot wait for the new album
He's serving us a full Mac Davis/John Denver vibe.
thank you john
In my mind this song is a very loving tribute to the first cat that I ever had as a child, Mr. Bluebeard. : ) Also thinking of "The Bad Guy" Scott Hall aka Razor Ramon
I feel that this might be the most beautiful homage to Harry Nilsson ever.
i was thining the same
An homage or a blatant rip off?
@@danamquinn1 I love both Harry and Josh Tillman's work and it doesn't really matter to me. But yeah, even the performance is a lot like what Harry did for "Everybody's Talking". I'm eager to hear the entire album :)
@@danamquinn1 it’s not a rip off. I think it’s just a very obvious homage like the og comment said. I bet he’d say that it was inspired by everybody’s talking
@@b_i_l_l_w_i_l_l_i_a_m_s_o_n I like how I said it better, it’s a blatant rip off 🙂
Holy shit, this is such a beautiful song. Best songwriter and performer in the world - fact.
So underrated, the guy is a genuine legend. Seeing him live is an experience I recommend anyone to see. Incredible live.
Went from Father John Mist to Daddy John Misty
Well .. I wasn't expecting that. A traditional Country style tune with a slightly non-traditional arrangement.... I can dig it as part of FJM's tapestry of uniqueness
I actually felt it was more like 70's NYC folk music... but that's a tribute to his ability to communicate in everyone's musical language 😊
just the right amount of space between every feature of the music. lovely.
Outstanding, beautifully sung, brilliant song , really needed this song
Close cropped hair and blue jeans?? A true transformation! Beautiful performance
i can name a million country and blues singers this evokes, but for me it, in its deceptive simplicity evokes a young cat stevens. one of the best songs i've heard in a while
Father John Misty is just incredible
Terrific tune from an eclectic musician.
truly otherworldly. thank you so much, Joshua, cannot wait for the new album ❤️
Buzz cut, tapered beard, blue jeans...I like it!
no belt!
@@greytoeimp truly iconic
Wow! That's a COUNTRY song-- a REAL country song after the likes of John Hartford, Harry Nilsson, John Prine, and numerous others hitting that late 60s early 70s Nashville verve...
I LOVE it!!!
It's pretty incredible FJM can make country sounds like this. Look back at some of his early work. Labeled early on as Independent, the tones carry over, but the lyrics have a much different feel than most country.
The Flying Burrito Father!
The best song in the last few years. I keep listening to it over and over again. It soothes my soul
Was sleeping when I heard this. Woke up and listened again first thing this morning. Beautiful
Same here at 3 am on 92.5 The River in Boston,2 weeks ago instantly got goosebumps,2nd time heard the whole song and made me all teary eyed such a beautiful bittersweet melody!
Living for the new tracks, I miss his beautiful hair but he's still such a looker. ❤️
His touring keyboard player Kyle Flynn on acoustic guitar along with David VanDerWaal... amazing talent!
Elijah Thompson is my spirit player ❤❤❤
Yeah, Josh's musicians are top notch quality. I wish I lived in LA and had an opportunity to audition for him. I like to sing along with the harmonies when I'm in the car and Josh's vocal range is basically my vocal range. His voice is straight up amazing.
I lost my cat Billy and this song really resonates, sleep tight Billy bobs xx
That orchestra, beautiful.
The best new song I heard this year so far.....
I saw this under a comment of Toto - Hold the Line and I always have remembered it and I will repeat it here.... Monster Bass.
This is the best song on the new album by far. It’s a totally different sound than the rest of them, too.
Yes, this and Only a Fool are the best off the new record (which is amazing, btw.)
Got to love the man, got to love him!
He's reaaaaaally cute too.
What a beautiful song.
This song guts me
Saw him on Steven COLBERT and had to replay this song it’s amazing ! Love this!
I love that man.
what a rich voice, absolutely beautiful
Love this............everything .
What a banger.
Every now and then I’m lucky enough to run across a jewel like this. It’s hard to find real music like this for someone who grew up listening to all the great songs from the 60s thru the 80s.
EXACTLY!! BEST melody in over 40 years!
Like an absolute boss! Thanks, Josh! You nailed it again!
Wow only just stumbled across this wonderful singer and song on Spotify. Such a wonderful voice and lyrics. ❤
Oh my God. What a beautiful song. Thank you Father John. 🌹🌹♥️♥️
Absolutely beautiful song
GO Joshua! Cant wait for the album. Thanks to Colbert's team for this :)
I miss this such a unique voice 👍🏼
Damn this song and Father John kick so much ass, so powerful when art can move you so much.
Sad song. Sad and beautiful.
100% digging the laid back 70s vibe ;). If you want a total joy check out his Josh Tillman solo artist work. It’s excellent pre The Father Phase.
Lol when he was sleeping in his van in Seattle. Hell yeah
Also him yelling at some staff in a bar thats fun
@@sachalusty4819 never said he was a good guy… his music was good.

Ooh, this is good. This one's got real Harry Nilsson "Everybody's Talkin'" vibes.
What an AMAZING voice, was unaware of him till Funny Girl. ❤️🧡💛💚💙🌟
Oh you're in for a treat!
YES the man finally getting that recognition
I've been listening to music sine the 1960s and have been disappointed by many of the new artists that perform on this show sounding like garage bands back in the day. This one impressed me. Very nice song and an excellent singing voice. Thanks you for that.
so damn good!!
Wonderful
He is my prophet. I worship his every word, every note. OMG. The album has just come out and I've transcended to the other place again.
I love him so much.
So gentle, thank you
This guy writes some great songs.
Simply fantastic...hope to catch you live again in Amsterdam
Wow! Where has this artist been? What a voice! Reminds of the 70's music I used to listen to
Like Cat Stevens, and Harry Chaplin,Such a BEAUTIFUL AMAZING song, well sung and that orchestra BLEW ME AWAY!
go back to fear fun and listen through all his albums
"thank you John"
brings to mind a golden oldie "Everybody's Talking" from Midnight Cowboy
Reminds me of the woefully underated Fred Neill
blessed with a beautiful voice.
I love this song...I love his voice it transports me on air and I breathe the blues..
The beautiful thing about this song and it being posted here on this website is that, inevitably, someone’s going to complain about it being a “Harry Nilsson rip off” or some odd thing which will compel someone who has never heard of Harry Nilsson to go search this same website for Harry Nilsson and they’ll inevitably find “Everybody’s Talking” and say to themselves, “Wait, I’ve heard that one!” or “Hey this is pretty good I haven’t heard this one before!” and the result of all this is that a bunch of people, having enjoyed the musical stylings of Joshua Tillman, are now also fans of Harry Nilsson. Friends, I hope we can all find the positive in the otherwise negative around us.
Really love this song it cuts like a knife with my father's passing this year.
Really reminiscent of Harry Nillson's "Everybody's Talkin"
And I think that's a good thing
What a great performance!
Colbert ,one heck of a show 🙌🏽
Didn’t think FJM could get any hotter, but here we are
The song of 2022!! THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG OF THE YEAR!
This moves me more than I have words to say. I guess "Thank you, Father John" will have to do.
Adore his voice, music, lyrics...
Damn, he’s looking fine with the short hair.
Captivating
Just love this man's creations
when i heard this I thought this was a glen campbell song - its so like the one about the linesman. glen campbell was amazing
This sound reminds me of Waylon Jennings for some reason. I really loved listening to this song.
explaining how this isn't a #1 single is the key to what's wrong with America
because 95% of people happily listen to whatever shit is on the radio for their whole lives
Oh,but give it time! I only hear this on one station, bet it will be a top 10 within a few weeks, judging by all the comments on here hopefully it hits #1
Excellent!
What a song ❤
the last time comes too soon💔
YEA! FATHER JAWN!

I love how he said "Thank you, John."
