The comparisons to "Everybody's Talkin' " are inevitable. Regardless, Misty has an amazing voice that transcends all genres. Voices like this only come around every so often.
It has taken a few listens over the last day to really hear this song... such a departure. I dig it. He's embracing a Glen Canpbell + sad 70's ballad vibe here. Only this Misty Tillman can make that work for me.
About 1/3 of the music, and much more of the spirit is pure Harry Nilsson, Jr writing. Great writers and performers ALWAYS steal from the greats who went before (this is not a dig, you have to actually be GOOD to understand how others' work is good to steal successfully)
There's a number of songs this sounds like - but the humming is a straight copy of whatever it is. It's driving me mad bc I can't place it. I missed the Misty. Flat he's back.
To me it most closely resembles "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City" (which itself was an homage to "Everybody's Talkin'"). The theme suggests it might also be inspired by "Last Morning" by Dr. Hook/Shel Silverstein. I love all those songs. This one's tasteful but rings a bit hollow. Still rooting for the guy.
I feel like FJM is channeling the last 13 months of my life. I didn't realize all of the moments that were the last times before my boyfriend died last year. Now I remember the last time we bought that expensive cat food, the last time we had coffee, the last time we made love, and most of all, the last time we put on FJM and danced. #RIPJAY I know you're listening to our favorites right beside me, just on the Other Side. The beautiful thing about this song and it being posted here on this website is that, inevitably, someone’s going to complain about it being a “Harry Nilsson rip off” or some odd thing which will compel someone who has never heard of Harry Nilsson to go search this same website for Harry Nilsson and they’ll inevitably find “Everybody’s Talking” and say to themselves, “Wait, I’ve heard that one!” or “Hey this is pretty good I haven’t heard this one before!” and the result of all this is that a bunch of people, having enjoyed the musical stylings of Joshua Tillman, are now also fans of Harry Nilsson.
