This channel is based in the North East of England ( UK ) and documents our explorations of both the underground and above ground workings of abandoned, and sometimes operational mines within areas such as the Northern Pennines, North Yorkshire and the Lake District, sometimes a little further. We now and again throw in some caving too. Our intention is to document these abandoned mines, show how they worked and talk about the history behind them. Unfortunately, due to politics, or the need to preserve the site, we can not always name the mine location. If the location is not shown in the video, please do not ask as refusal to divulge often offends.
THE DANGERS OF ABANDONED MINE EXPLORATION :
    ****
Abandoned mines contain dangers for which equipment and training are required. Hazards can include false floors, open shafts, low oxygen, poisonous gases, collapsing or rotten structures, explosives, flood risks, bacterial infection and of course, rock falls. NEVER enter alone, ALWAYS thoroughly research your destination, ALWAYS alert a third party to your plans and timings. STAY OUT, STAY ALIVE.

So good to see how you all work calmly together to ensure everyone is safe as can be to bring such amazing footage of places a lot of us would never dare to go and would never see, thank you.

Yep, it’s very important to be with people who know their limits, don’t panic and work as part of a team for situations like that :)

Good morning and what amazing team work. It just shows how easy it can be to make a mistake, plus how well you all work together as a team to support eachother.
Did Gary take his suit back for not reflecting the dirt 😂

One of the best yet for showing what conditions must have been like for the miners, to think they would navigate that by candlelight, it looked hard enough with modern lighting, great video😊

Thanks Louise, yes, dangerous conditions for the miners in that one. Think you will like next weeks, something a bit different and very summery, with Ariel, surface and underground footage.

Well done, good to see this mine portrayed in video. Upstairs is an absolute multi- level rabbit warren, with crosscuts and rises everywhere, looks like a ladder in plan. Speaking of ladders, that one by the blue pipe is 2/3 or one we 'liberated' from Whiteheaps mill in the mid-80's and cut into 3 joinable sections, to get it round some of the tight corners. The third section is in Prouds Sump (Hangingshaws L.) Shame to see the entrance dig so broken up, could definitely do with some TLC, but at least you have a 2nd exit! The kettles were often used by the miners to top-up their carbine [sic] lamps with water. I've a photo somewhere of Jackie Parmley with one at that mine with the hanging shovel. We put in the blue pipe to try to de-water the next section before the shaft with the long steel ladder (DDMS 2000) 😊

Aha, you did it, well done :). Nice to know the ladders are all related lol. We actually have a 2nd video where we got past the big sump in that workings (Beyond the impassable shaft) if you want to see past there, assuming you've not been there. Yes, tried to get through that wet section, but my feet left the floor and I can't swim. A dig in the other mine is collapsing and making the large ladders beyond difficult to access from that direction too.

No guts, no glory. Your lead guys had balls of steel especially after one of them almost fell into the abyss. Also well done to the older gentleman, I know crawling through the bowels of the earth is extremly exhausting. Total respect guys. 👍

Well that was fun! What a brilliant explore by all of you working together to keep safe. You all go above & beyond to bring us all fantastic footage of a mine that is incredibly sketchy! So many shafts & small tunnels which haven't had company in a long time so many kettles & buckets! Take a bow lads! 😊🥰❤👍👌

some sneaky big holes in that one, ending up down one of them could really put a crimp in your day.

Its strange but the idea of being in confined spaces is unpleasant. However the reality feels almost.. comforting, safe. You can pause for a moment and so long as nothing is going out under you or coming down on top its peace and quiet everywhere. All the time and the history that has passed while the dark down there was untroubled--Badajoz, Waterloo, Balaclava, Roarke's Drift, Mafeking, the Somme and Alamein... Plenty of north-country miners went off to die at each, but all the while it was quiet and dark in that hole--waiting for them to come back... Weird sensation.
Definitely time for a cup of tea and a bit of snap. I am surprised you chaps don't don't take battery kettles with you!

Thanks, we usually have flasks of tea. Were in a mine a few hours ago for a video coming a week Saturday where it appears we were the first in in a very long time.
