- Before you Drivers fill that coffee thermos & head out on the road take a few minutes and drewl over Wayne Rice's 1954 GMC 630 with a killer Detroit 4-71 "Fuel to noise" powerplant. I think you're gonna love this fine example of Old School Trucking equipment......GM style.
The "Luck of da Irish" was with me this year as I caught this Bad boy on St. Paddy's Day.
That is quite a truck. I fell in love with Detroits in my childhood, from buses, to garbage trucks to anything that pulled a load.
Dane, what a great video! Absolutely love the truck. Anything Detroit gets my juices flowing. My dad was a big Detroit guy('Binders were his favorite with GMC his second fav)he ran his own repair and leasing business for 50 years and was pretty much the Detroit whisperer in this area. The last one he rebuilt was a 12V71 in 2009 when he was 75 ...he always ran them in a test stand to break em in before putting em in.....he loved doing that 12V so much. Sometimes I just think of all the knowledge that went with him when he passed, and all of the other old timers too. Brought back some good memories of when life was simpler. Thank you Dane!
Wow! What a great heritage Steve! Thanks for sharing and for watching 😬
🇺🇸 Steve, enjoyed your comments.🥰 I grew up around many old trucks of the 50-70s and grew to love them. I’ve never been much of a Detroit lover, but there have been several Detroit powered rigs that I really enjoyed! My brother bought a 72 IH single axle and we pulled a flatbed of the styrofoam to Cincinnati weekly. It wasn’t loaded with power, but that 238 would get down the road & do the job very well. We put over 1 million miles on that old engine before having it rebuilt! Loved that truck!🥰 I enjoyed all the trips I made with my brother. He taught me quite a bit. I now have a IH 9670 with a Series 60 Detroit & love it. Keep On Truckin! 🥰😎✌️
What a beauty, who wouldn't be proud to own a truck like that. There was a lot of freight that got moved by those little 4-71s , now they just seem so tiny. That cow clip cracked me up by the way :-)
Lol, glad you liked it AND the bovine cameo 😬👍
Looks great, sounds great, great history of a family truck, a great truck for you to be proud of. Thanks for posting
Pretty girl! I used to work for a dirt moving company that restored "the Old Man's" first lowboy tractor. It was this same vintage body with a swapped 6-71, giant Mack rear tandem and a twin box trans, with massive winch of course for the old style lowboy. She was a good looking old tractor. Those old trucks really were 'tractors' , basically no comforts other than glass and heat
In 1956 when I was 11 years old I rode up to Erie with my older brother to pick up a 470 gmc tractor with a 371 in it from reslick and wingers(gm dealer). He trade in a 1949 gas job gmc. The salesman there gave me one of those 860 cannonball friction models and I've been hooked forever.
I close my eyes and the sound alone take me back to my misspent youth... :)
Lol, that’s what it’s all about. Thanks for watching
That is a beautifully restored truck. A lot of history. Glad it stayed in the family
GMC + DETROIT DIESEL= AWESOME. Beautiful truck. Nice story.
I just LOVE GMC's for some unknown reason and have them as part of my fond childhood memories, we can't get them in South Africa anymore.
Great looking truck. He did a very nice job restoring it. Love hearing the story of it's history.
There’s no better way to turn fuel into noise. Another great video Dane!
Thanks Cole
thats for suer well said colebertils
Beautiful old Jimmy was born same year as me.
What a beautiful Jimmy. Looks as good as it sounds. Of all the trucks my father drive in the early 60's was a 1953 Jimmy with the 6-71.
What a beautiful truck I love to have those kind. Of memories
Awesome truck with an awesome story!!! I'm sorry to hear about his wife. Sounds like she would be proud of him!
My first rig was a 53 660 Jimmy 4 71 with a 5 and 2, great truck , could run 3 loads from New Castle PA to Youngstown Ohio a day.
I think all truckers my age and older have a fond memory of ol Detroits. The first couple trucks I drove were Detroits, a 8v71 318 and a silver 92 350.
So glad he saved this truck. Thanks for sharing
Wow, she is awesome. Thanks for the tour Dane and Wayne.
Back in the early 60's a GMC 600 series, single-axle dump truck with a DD would pass thru our end of town once or twice a week. I'd run down the alley to try and catch a glimpse of it as the driver would pull out onto the main thoroughfare and go through the gears. I sure loved the sound of that "screamin' jimmy".
What a great memory!😬👍
When I was very young my neighbor hauled steel with one of these before he bought a Crackerbox. I remember the 630 sitting across the road in the field until he stripped it of everything he could possibly use.
Beautiful truck! We had a sawmill powered by a 471 Detroit and it was straight piped. I loved that sound!
I love that truck and I was born in 54. Even the trucks, back in the day, had art
The first and maybe the last one I'll see .
What a beauty! Oh they may be LOUD, but what a glorious noise! Complete opposite end of the internal combustion sound spectrum from a high rpm Formula One V12 at full wail, but glorious nonetheless. I remember a car carrier at work I used to drive. This was in the late 90’s early 00’s, it was a 1985 GMC 8500 6 wheel with a hydraulic sliding/tilting 20’ bed. It was a very nice but abused by every driver but me. But it was a loaded High Sierra trim, with power windows and locks, AM/FM stereo, AC, great air seat, padded door panels and roof, with tinted windows. Peered by a very similar 4/71 Detroit, but with an added 120 mm turbo up on top of everything else. Sent back to a straight 5 speed low hole first, with 2speed posi 5:88/4:10 rear. Man did that old noise maker create some amazing sounds! Run up through the gears with the 2speed rear was like bambambam. We used it to haul lumber and building supplies, when we weren’t delivering or picking up empty and even loaded Sea Containers, from 20-28’ long. The radio was a nice Pioneer with 4 great speakers, but even with the windows up it was almost impossible to hear!
So cool! wonder what happened to that bad boy!
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE last I hear it was still in service! But the PW are now crank, the HVAC controls are totally gone. Word is the company owner wants to put the engine in an F-350 4x4.
Quite a wonderful story and presentation.
that's a very sweet truck ,thanks to the owner and u dane
Thanks Gary
That was a great story of a family-owned truck. The restoration looks beautiful and the truck sounds awesome. Thanks for sharing this with us ✌️🇺🇲
Yes Sir thanks for watching 😬👍
Love it. That's awesome. 54 a man had to know what he was doing to drive one of those
Great video, gives me inspiration to get going on my 630, it’s an old fire truck with a 503 gas engine. Want to swap the cab on to my C-70 with a 453T. Hopefully it’s going to be do-able.
There ya go! Keep us posted, would love to see it.
Good morning Dane, well it was worth the wait and it's funny but that GMC and the cracker box's are my favorite tractors . That 54 is a true piece of history , family history I should say , what a fantastic way to celebrate his wife & father by doing such a wonderful restoration and even though it's not a ' professional restoration just like yours it's just as good and you did yourself . Thanks again and I hope the weather is finally turning for you'al up there.
Thank you Mark, yes he did an awesome resto, he understates it. Yes we’re getting a bit better weather but still cold. Thanks as always for watching.😬
You have to like this man's collection...love to see the general....it looks original by the few glimpses of it
And you WILL see the General soon...trust me. lol
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE awesome...working on mine today but still chilly outside....
Watermelon mountain pulled coal up it many times. That is a beautiful truck
My Dad had a 54 snub nose( cab over) GMC farm truck 18 ft bed 4 speed trans w/2speed rear axle, cool truck.. a tv show cannonball had a bigger truck like yours , great job!,,
I had a neighbor in the 70s like that truck. His also had a 471 with a 5 speed and a 2 speed rear end. He added a drag axle and pulled a tandem axle grain trailer. He used it to haul grain from the field to the grainy. It was painted John Deere yellow and his wife drove it. When he upgraded to a newer truck he sold it to a neighbor. It stayed in the area for a while. Don’t know what happened to it. Thanks for rebuilding it and making the video.
What a great memory! That’s what it’s all about my friend 😬👍
Man that is a nice truck love that sweet sound of a 2 stroke!
I love this old truck and the sound, a great job my friend!
Very cool my brother used to drive one like that
This is what I tell people. Like restoring a old car, its about the memories. I have a Transtar currently restoring, I always wanted one. Id like to get the very truck Id started learning to drive when my dad would take me to work. Beautiful truck btw!
Love it 8v92’s 👍
What an amazing truck! Thank you for sharing. Love the back story of it also, can you just imagine being able to tell that story about peeing from that tank as a kid...AWESOME!
I know right? Quite a memory indeed lol.
Thats a Beautiful truck for sure...That old Detroit sounds Amazing...He did a Great job restoring it. And the back story is Awesome..Great Video. Thank you for taking us all along...

Absolutely Beautiful Truck ! Glade it got restored, I know it holds a lot of good memories ! Have a Blessed Day !
A family friend owned one of those when I was a child. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
That’s what we’re all about here Ken, old school cool memories 😬👍. Thanks for watching.
That is SO FREAKING BEAUTIFUL!!
Nice truck ,nice motor ,nice video!
Very nice, love the sound of those 4-71s. Would like to have one in a pickup some day.
Totally real truck ! even the cows thought it was a beauty! Thanks for the story on this 1954 GMC 630 Detroit Diesel 4-71 totally Americana ! & his GMC General is looking pretty sweet as well .
And thanks for watching 😊

Thanku Dom.
Thank you good coverage of a great truck.
Beautiful truck my dad had a 1953 gmc 630 with a 5 speed trans and a 2 way rear rend 471 detroit loved the sound of that truck sad to see it go when my dad got out of trucking and into mechanic full time
It musta looked an awful lot like Wayne’s 😬👍
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE it was red black step boards and white top
Great truck. Great stories.
Pretty cool, I bet when you go down the road the neighbors know who it is without looking😁
I bet you’re right!😂
Wayne's "amateur" restoration turned out perfectly correct for the vintage . I owned several '54 model 630s and never got to that level of restoration, only preservation . He's got some good talent, and I'll look forward to seeing it at shows in the future .
He sure does! He understates his great work!😬
What a great restoration ! That’s a great old Gimmy! I really enjoyed the video. Thanks A lot .
And thanks for watching Odell. 😬
How can you not like that diesel sound
Good old 1954 my parents were born in that year anyway thats a cool old truck with a awesome story. Those old 4-71's are cool engine but they are heavy engine. they weight is damn near 2000 pounds. I know a guy who put a 4-71T in a old chevy 1 ton truck and had to beef the front end up just to put he engine in the truck. He still has the truck with that engine in it and it's a torque monster
Oh man I bet it is! :)
What a sweet find and back story. I especially like the interior, very authentic
Good to see you an that gmc hope you an them are doing great buddy keep warm an safe
U2 Tommy
That is a sweet looking truck. Good job Dane.
Thanks Jim, hope all is well.
Great story! Hard miles back then.
That was fun listening to the stories
Love the video and the truck is gorgeous. Good ole’ Detroit. ♥️
Great video Dane that was a awesome truck
No apologies for that resto, well done!! Reminds me of my dad's 58 International he used to haul his Caterpillar 955 around in the 60s, loved that old truck.
THANKS DANE FOR ANOTHER AWESOME VIDEO THIS TRUCK ROCKS HIS GENERAL IN THE BACKGROUND IS AWESOME AS WELL LOVE THE DETROIT SOUND
And you’ll see it soon 😬
Thanks Dane for the awesome video that truck is so beautiful thanks again
Nice understanding wifey too 😆!!
Reminds me of my early years... I did love the sound of that exhaust but for power wise... I wouldn't wish it on a enemy,. I did like power and those detroits were nothing compared to todays detroit. I started on a "Bull nose" 57 KW, and it had a 250 cummins with the "stinger" on the fuel pump. 5 speed, three speed brownie transmission, a two speed rear... in and about 64. I just had the best truck pulling a flat bed trailer... heres the best part... vacuum brake an water to cool it down like it was fast enough tp warm the drums. Bad thing to take forgranted as I did come off of a hill that claimed a few trucks... My cab on this truck was a graft from a older rig, I believe it was a sterling
man I love it.
That truck is a stunning beauty just looks like it has just off the assembly line
That sir is a fine restoration and something to be proud of. I love the pee on the fly story.
Do the job fine. Just don't need to be in a rush. Different era. Gorgeous truck.
Like #117. Oh man, what a treat to see that. The door shut super quiet.
Does that truck bring back Memories !My Uncle Bill had 4 of them with 20 ft Fruehauf dump trailers , my dad drove one of them . Hauled coal from Buckeye Furnace mine to Piketon,Ohio A Plant . I don't think it ever made it into 5th gear loaded !!
Man, thats a nice truck!
First class restoration a beautiful piece of equipment
Wow what a resto looks and sounds real good
Love these guys and their old school rides. This guy did a good job with his Dad's ride and he is a great guy for adding his wife and the little details he put into his ride. God bless you all and I hope you have a great evening and enjoy your weekend. Would love to be caught up but I have to get work done then come home and finish chores to get to watch you all and get caught up. Sometimes like this evening I put it in auto play and watch what it throws my way because I can watch some of them twice, because they are so good. Thanks for sharing this with me and my family/friends. TTYL and we are looking forward to seeing all of your videos and work.
Thank you so much John for watching. Glad to bring them to you. And yes Wayne is really a great guy. Ive met so many wonderful people in this “hobby” and great subscribers like you are the icing on the cake. 😊👍
A gorgeous screamin Jimmy!!
That Jimmy brings back a lot of memories. Dad bought the same tractor in the early 60's. I believe it was a former St. Johnsbury truck. It replaced a F-8 with a Lincoln flat head V-8. That was big power back in the day. I spent many hours in the passenger seat as a kid. Every hill was spent in second low or high with that 4-71 screaming. He used it locally with a lowbed to haul dozers and a backhoe.
Wow! Great memories to have 👍
What a BIG LOUD BEAST! Beautiful!
Detroit sound all the way 😬👍
Excellent video! I will have to add your videography was very good. The camera was still I could see details as a result no bouncing around good job!
Thank you Jason, it’s been a learning process for sure. Glad you enjoyed it. 😬
Nice Jimmie, seems like it's got a pretty cool owner too.
He’s a great friend and person for sure. 😬
What a beautiful truck my father loved scamming Jimmy I remember riding with him in a big truck thanks for sharing this video love it
You bet James, glad to share it with you. Thanks for watching 😬👍
Sweet Jimmy!!!
Porter greetings!😎 Now this is what I needed to see! 🤩 My dad had a 630 GMC like this back in the day. Had a very unique story behind it as well, actually more than one story! 🧐 It excites me to hear that he has such history with this truck! 🥰 Wonderful stuff & even had his wife wanting him to get it done! Wow!! 🥰 There’s nothing like these old rigs & hearing the powerful stories & seeing their beauty! I really like what he’s done to it! Isn’t he the guy who had the other GMC 9500 or so?! 🧐 I like his General, too! He made a good point…he needed a garage to work on his rigs/passions! Well, it sure helps anyway. Another good episode! I like that it’s clean, fun, not vulgar & leaving me wanting to smell the diesel fumes and such! 🥰🇺🇸✌️
Thanks for watching as always, yes same guy. We also did the General that day so you can see it soon too. Yes the back stories are what really hit home with all you great fans and Drivers.... AND me lol.😬👍
I didn't know 54' GMC's had such a nice looking dash, much better than the pickups.
That truck would make a great mobile home mover. Very nice.
He did a good job for "amateur restoration." Good work indeed
I know ....he understates his great work.
I grew up listening to the music of 2 stroke Detroits since dad had several of them over his career. My favorite is the 8v92ta in his 1978 General. The very truck that's in my shop being restored right now. After GM sold out the heavy line to Volvo, dad went to Cat powered Peterbilts.
You’re blessed to have the truck to restore!!!😬👍
An oldie. But a goodie!!
once again great show Dane
Thanku 😬
Beautiful truck! It strikes me now, looking at the profile of this truck, how much it resembles the later GMC 9500...even the dash and interior resemble those 9500 that I drove in the 70's
You have misspoken, my friend. Your Jimmy IS pristine. Pure nostalgia. That is a very nice rig.
I agree it’s beautiful 😬👍
Timeless !
THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL TRUCK!!.
great video from start to finish ,what a lovely family and indeed a lovely story ,, greetings from ireland
Thank you John for watching 😬👍
Love the documentary on the 54 GMC. That guy sure looks familiar.
Iknow right? lol Thanks Marty
