- You're not gonna be able to handle all the cool Nostalia, Hot Rods, AND a Killer 1963 Crackerbox. This one is a former "Berkmire Trucking" from Erie, Pa. that sounds, looks, and drives soooooo good!
Grab your thermos, and log book and see what Old School Trucking looked like in glory Days of America.
Man lots of great old GM vehicles there!
He's got an amazing collection of Chevy's.
I love these trucks ! I love any truck, bus,, motor vehicle with the Detroit Diesel ! The sound just does something to the heart !
It sure does Robert, it’s music to our retro ears lol.
I dig those vintage gas pumps, that Chevelle and that El Camino!!
The add-on turbo won’t hurt that 6-71, the later versions in the early 80’s were available with these directly from DD/A. This particular engine desperately needs the rack ran on it and the idle reset to eliminate the “hunting”, would likely eliminate a good portion of the smoking. Might not hurt to pull the injectors and give them a thorough cleaning/inspection, possible gum/varnish deposits hanging the plungers in the bores.
I hear rod clatter in their too
I remember my father driving for trucking outfits when I was a kid, and a good many of the haulers were using GMC Crackerboxes... Two things that I always remembered about them was 1) that eerie green interior paint the factory always used, and 2) when these tractors used the Dayton type hubs (few had Budds because they were considered aftermarket back then) they always had this characteristic "fat" look (both front and back) that would distinguish the GM stock from any of the competitors of the time... Even the later Astro units that replaced the C-Box in 1969 didn't have stock Dayton hubs nearly as "thick & meaty"!
Your absolutely right! And that’s why I love em.😬👍
I Love them Dayton Wheel,s they are my Favorite on all Truck,s! You can really Dress them up with paint and Chrome lug nut covers and they stand out nice. Budd Type Wheel,s have been out just as longer as Dayton type wheel,s if can remember correctly. I would really have to check, to make sure. But I know as far back as, I can remember even when I lived out in California mostly all the old truck,s had Budd Type Wheel,s?
A turbo is not going to cause an engine to run away unless the seal goes bad and it starts running off the oil. Sounds like the injector rack might stick once in a while.
That crackerbox is a time capsule...neat to see a survivor like that...awesome ride
Statesboro GA had a large garage in the seventies. They did lots of these. They were quite fast. The building is still there surrounded by old trucks. This trucks engine sounds like it needs work. Great video.
Love the Crackerbox, in my junior and senior years of high school i help a guy that had a 318, 13speed,power steering. Love the sound, you could hear it coming 3 miles away !
Definitely iconic and memorable 😬👍
That 1963 Crackerbox reminded me of mine. Not the same but close enough. Red and white paint scheme, sa
AWESOME VIDEO. That shift lever was like yours and you did it again Dane, The Brockway was the same on that I drove, you always seem to show something from my past, Thank You.
Thanks Russ, always glad to take you down the memory lane. 😬
It needs the buffer screw adjusted. That’s why it lopes. It was 238 Hp. Add a turbo it goes to 265 hp.
Another great C-Box Video Dane. Love the vintage autos, signs, gas pumps, another trip down memory lane.
It's got a lot of potential......love the a/c unit screwed on the passenger side of the dash!!!
Wow, so much cool vintage equipment at that place. really takes you back in time. Similar to your own place.
Yes, only on steroids lol.
Oh my back when life was great
Cool truck
Just found the channel on my homepage Quality stuff you got on here 👌 better production than i manage to get worked up!
Thank you so much! Welcome aboard. Gotta check you out too 😬👍
Great video Dane. Who wouldn’t love to have this man’s entire collection, garage ,memorabilia and all.
I would spend all day looking at each poster. Coffee and/or Beers later I would be sad when I got to the end. I love the old vintage ads and images. Used to work at a 76 and a few Standard/Amocos as a mechanic/fuel jockey and loved every minute. Only had a few bad days back then.
Oh man …. Those were definitely good times 😬👍
Considering the half century plus age and the hard non-stop utilitarian use those trucks saw. It's a real testament to GM that there's a bunch still trucking on.
It also helps they built a metric crap ton of them
Man that brings back a lot of good memories 😊
Major BADASS GMC,and with a DETROIT.What a sound. Fantastic video. Long Live GMC and DETROIT DIESELS.
Living in Pennsylvania south of Erie I remember Berkshire Trucking Thanks for another trip down memory lane,as we used to say back in the day Keep The Shiny Side Up
Thatsa 10-4!
I pray one day to own one of these and be able to drive it for fun a while before I'm called to the Big Junkyard !
I’ll agree with you buddy. You’ll get your chance. Thank you for watching.
Very cool love that 63 good job love the vintage stuff
Nice crackerbox. That engine needs some fine tuning of the injectors and valves. She'll purr and roar after that.
Love the garage how its all set up
Cool video the vintage gas station fits the era of the truck!
As Dick Vitale would say- AWESOME, BABY, AWESOME!
Hello Dane,
My wife and I are on vacation, yesterday we stopped In a town called Deer Lodge Montana. There's an auto/prison museum there We went through that , your video reminded me with all the cool cars. My wife wanted them to keep me, but the prison has been shut down since 1979. They refuse to keep me.
Another great video sir.
Lol, well I’m glad you’re having a great vacation!😬
My uncle owned. Sinclair station in Scranton, PA, for decades.
Glad to see another great video from you. As I said before you sure come across a lot of interesting people (and trucks!) in your travels. That gentleman is right up collectors alleys with the petrolmania and of course his collection of four wheeled stuff. Wow!!!
The white '64 El Camino is like the one my dad had. He was going to pass it down to me (after having it 18 years) but in 1986 it got stolen.
I know, I had a very hard time keeping focused lol. He has such a fine collection, AND has done most all of it himself!
Very cool! My dad drove a 65 cracker box on the road until he got a International Transtar. many cool stories, very primitive.
Old school trucking at its best 😬👍
Great video. Nice looking 63 . He needs to take it a good run. It get hot enough that smoke will go away.
Beautiful Truck!!! Reminds me of the BJ and the Bear (TV show) truck paint scheme.......
Right 😬👍
Great video like the old toys great job thanks again 👍
I8
Yep, Birkmire had these with this paint scheme but green. Seen these running in Erie in the 80’s.
Stayed tuned for the next video, old Berkmire in original colors.😬
I believe they are still in business as btc trucking from erie,la they used to pickup where I loaded and unloaded at alot.
I love the old Crackerboxes!
Like #47. Somebody put those red inlayed GMC letters on that 63. The letters were changed to the red inlay modern ones in 1967. Mint Crackerbox. Best driveby...woo!
Thanks Joe, I thought so.
Another awesome video Dane please keep them coming your friends from minnesota
Will do Shelly, thanks
I HAVE DROVE THOSE TRUCKS 👍
Really sharp cracker box!!
Great truck, nice video with all the older cars and signs. Would of rather seen them in color.
I would really like have that Truck do a little engine work and some interior work she's ready to go!!! Stay safe and keep the Hammer down 👇
Great old truck
Excellent video, nice cars good looking truck definitely can use some tlc
Great to see, thanks for posting👍
I think that Impala is a 67.. really Cool 😎!!
That Impala is a '68, NOT a '67.
@@marcushaynes843
I bought a '68 Impala in 1976 after turning 16 for $375.00. The 327 ran great, it had mag wheels but it needed a right front fender that I got at a salvage yard with the same car color for $25.00.
My grandpaw had a crackerbox that was a 67 it was a 6v71 truck that he swapped to a 8v71 that truck was sold a long long time ago and while at my local auto wreckers i spotted it in the weeds it looked like it had been rolled over
nice tractor Dane great video job
Nothing sounds like a 6-71!
He has a very Cool 😎 car collection as well I noticed!!
Thanks for the awesome video
Looks like it could do for a ring job. Those engines are easy and fairly cheap to major.
I got all excited when I saw the clutch pedal micro switch….That means she’s got a JAKE!!!! They’re Pretty rare on an 8V71 but a 6-71 with jakes is about as rare as hen’s teeth these days. A plain old 2 stroker sounds good on its own but there’s nothing like that sound when you let off at 2000 RPM and let that jake sing.
The ride quality on today's beat up interstates will have you wishing you had air ride and new suspension. That thing would jar your teeth right out of your head on I 40 in Arizona. Probably fun to drive under 50 mph but today's interstates , not so much.
You’re definitely right, it’s no different here in Ohio… trust me. But it’s pure pleasure driving them and connecting with that old school vibe.
Great video, love the content. Subscribed!
Thanks SB!😬
So AWESOME Dane. Was there a bed in the back or no?
it is a sleeper truck yes.
Very cool old iron there.
Beautiful ❤️😍
One of the truck manufacturers should make a new model of a cracker box truck. I bet a lot of truckers would buy them.
If that were to happen it would not be a cracker box, you had to experience one to understand
Fantastic.
Check the Rack Adjust
Americana overload!!!!!
I like the tow truck too!
I ran lots of Detroits in heavy equipment and none of them ever smoked like that: At startup but after a few minutes that should be gone . Almost looks like water getting in and it’s burning it. Cracked block or head gasket. Ran a 6-110 that idled like that. Otherwise ,gorgeous truck
Good morning ☠️
The lettering on the red and white '63 Crackerbox is wrong. The green one at the start of this vid has the correct lettering.
Right I thought maybe someone had changed the letters to the newer style.
Man it is a twin screw!
That old crackerbox smokes alot. White gray. Is he sure he doesnt have a Head problem .Its in great shape for the year. It sounds Different for sure...alot of people used to add a turbo to those engines..LOL..He could have a Rack or injector sticking..Just wondered if he said anything is all Great Video though...
She needs attention
@@andrewnorris1514 Yea She does. Has good Bones though ..
Very cool!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice place!
AWESOME
Have you thought about possibly adding yourself a trailer to your fleet?
Like an old school 48 ' box or something.
Yes eventually but it will be like a pup 28’ or there abouts.
A 671 with a Jake brake, don't see them everyday. The square air horns must be late model stuff but they look natural with the squareness of a crackerbox.
I agree.
It would be good to hear that old girl getting some real work done with a load. Might need a little precautionary work first to find out why it felt like it was getting away.
gday i think she needs a visit frm the awrded truck gmc crackerbox doctor might just b the turbo with alll that smoke & down pn power mayb a swap of the shiny metal in the ol service station & the ol gmc doctor does his magic!
You can tell from the sound that the rack is way off.
Thanks for the tour of the old buildings and crackerbox. Is that your band playing background music?
No Ed but ya never know if I throw in some original stuff one day again. 😬
Amazing! I love the bj and the bear paint, will you ever bring any of your cabovers to kenly 95 truck stop in kenly Nc off of 95?
Ya never know. It is a ways away though. I have a lot goin on here so it’s hard to get away.
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE ok
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE I saw ur pete for sale, only thing is we looking for something about 2 or 3k, I would of bought it if I could
I drove a GM a few times but didn't care for them. Even the 318 was underpowered. It didnt help that my route took me over Donner Pass. It took me over 3 hours to go 90 miles. I did have one truck with a Detroit that I did like tho. That was a 1988 Kenworth with a 575 hp 8V92. And yes, they did make but only aftermarket. It was a truck/trailer tanker and i used to pass the 3406's and the 400's.
Wow! your a true Veteran on the pass! Hat tipped Driver.
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE I still look back on everything with nostalgia though. 0
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE
I started in the early 60's on my Dad's ranch. Bought my first truck in '74 and went to Alaska to work. Didnt stop until a drunk wrong way driver took me and my truck out August 17, 2001.
8 v 92's were thirsty. I'll take the 3406 all week long. JUST SAYIN
@@andrewnorris1514
Yes, they were! But you gotta remember the times though. Fuel was relatively cheap then. Most engines including Cummins and Cat's only got around 5-6 mpg. The big Detroits got just a little less. That truck/trailer I ran had two 250 gallon saddle tanks to make sure that I had plenty of motion lotion.
Hey from Canada ont
Factory power steering in 63? No way! I've driven a couple of cracker boxes that were newer than that and they didn't have power steering
most of those were equipped with what G M called pin point steering, as long as it was rolling it was supposed to steer easier than most of the other competitors back in the day.
@@MrDavidstroud Ok Thanks David
I agree with Bowslap-rack needs to be run, injectors pulled and flow tested, governor set and most of all-take it out and blast the living crap out of it. You're driving it WAY to slowly and lugging the engine. Get it up to the governor. Do you know that Detroit Diesel had a marine version of the 6-71TI that put out 485hp at 2,500rpm straight from the factory? Many a truck driver turned these engines up to 2,800rpm for better performance-course less engine life.
Purple People Eater 👾😈😂
Wonder what oil was in the engine? Many don't know to put 40 wgt Delo 100 in.
Right
You up in Pennsylvania? I'm looking into a CDL school in Bethlehem, know of any schools up there? I'm in NJ.
I’m Ohio, not really. Now days they come and go so fast.🙄
👍👍
You better look into that motor...I had turboed 6 and 8 71's (262 and 350)...not only does it sound just quite right but it smokes waaaay to much...just sayin
not quite right sorry
Oh yes my buddy said it needs some attention from a Detroit Pro. Still killer though 😬👍
Hi Dane, where does this guy live/ if if he doesn’t mind give out his information.
I try to keep privacy for people unless they want to respond. I'm sure you can appreciate. Thanks.
Them ear rings an LGBLT thing?
Good grief I’m a musician and had my ears pierced since I was 20 lol.
Does anybody know who came up with the cracker box moniker? I always called them that before I heard it elsewhere I swear. Coincidence I guess
Probably from all the way back when they came out in 59.
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE probably so , they definitely are just a cracker box too, strictly utilitarian. are all of them tag axles or are there ones with two drive axles? Thanks for the vid BTW
About 4 maybe 5 miles from where this vidoe was taken is another birkmir crackerbox for sale
Get outta town!!! Really? Please do tell😮😬👍. You can email me at sdgraphics@gwcmail.net
Great find Dane! Now I see why they call them cracker boxes. That bunk was mean! I could sleep in it but I am 5 foot 7 and 145 pounds but Holy Cow that’s crazy. Looks fun to drive!
PS: What happened to your diner intro?
I try to mix it up but very soon I’ll do a new one. Thanks for watching
What's up
Where are those vehicles and would the owner sell?
No sir, his private collection 😬
@@DaneScottsTRUCKERSLOUNGE
The '68 Impala looks just like my 1st car, wheels and all back in 1976. That was the reason that I asked if the guy was selling. Thanks
Safety issue as 6:14 on that wheel. ouch
That other Impala looks like a 71 or 72..
The other Impala is a '71. You were right about the year.
Pretty sure it is too far gone to fix unless it is a labor of love... underpowered, it only pegged the speedometer when it had a runaway. Old school transmissions and drive train... it would still make a yard jockey for moving trailers around. Frame is severely rust jacked and of no real good anymore. A decent load would leave parts on the ground... thats real embarrassing when that happens. Please don't ask me how I know. I am seventy two, near that to three and its hard to show me something I haven't seen in that time. That said, there really is lots to see yet, it just feels that way
Its not a work truck Morgan. We just have these old trucks for fun. Hats off to your years of service Bud. Thanks for watching.
