- What is a Data Catalog - Tech VLOG
This is a new surge in the world of Data, combining the best of Metadata, Search & Recommendation engines in one place for business discovery of data
Fabulous explanation
As someone starting their career in tech with data catalog, I found this video very valuable. Keep em' coming!
would love to see you do a video on best practices for creating a data catalog with a demo and example using a tool like Tableau Catalog.
Data catalog concept explained so simply with amazon search experience...
Great example... 👍👍👍👏👏👏
Very nice example
Well explained, I am implementing one.
Excellent. To be precise, this is what I needed to know on this topic. Thanks much..
Thank you! Great explanation
awesome video. Your amazon camera example broke the concept down into little edible pieces :). You helped me understand the concept of data catalog. thank you!
Amazing video and very cool explanation with practical life example..many thanks...influenced by this short 8 minute video..hence "liked and subscribed" without any second thought :)
Superbly explained thank you sir
Thank you for this very useful info.
Simple and clear. Thank you!
Very well explained, thank you.
+Mantej Singh Dhanjal it is exciting to see this come along
Great explanation!!!
Hi Garnie, Could you also provide an example of how to implement a Data catalog in real-world. And Is it really necessary to implement an Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog kind of tools or can we do it in simple way without the need to purchase an expensive software ? Kindly share any good document (if you have it!) Thanks much !
bang on !
thanks for the explanation 👍 is Data lineage just required to validate the accuracy of the data from seeing the origination? could you list the other use cases for Data lineage?
hey Lakshya, so Lineage is mainly used for "where did it come from"... another way of looking at it: auditing. When there is an audit, Lineage is definitive proof of the process... another use case: what did you do. many times we forget what we actually did in development. Heck I forget to "comment" in my code and scripts... so Lineage is a great way of "what did I do" or "what did someone else do" ... one last use case is confidence in the data: this is a great tool to help the business users / consumers of the data to "see" the where, the what of the transformations, and the target of the data. Most folks do not know see or know how data is created, or the dependencies are involved in making data... Lineage is a great help... speaking of Dependencies: ever wonder what systems are impacted from code changes, or what sources and targets are involved... basically an inventory of the systems and data sets engaged ? yeah, Lineage... helps the developer and the System Ops teams know what can be impacted down stream and up stream... hope that helps...
@@GarnieBolling Thank you so much for the explanation. Very helpful!
I think what is needed is more of how it is done rather than explaining what data catalog. I see thousands of videos describing about the context but none are sharing how they did it. I am looking for a simple example of taking a customer dimension and be able to build a data catalog and searchable through web API's on a browser. Can you make a video and post it?
please share in case you have found anything that you were looking for. I am interested in same as well navin..thanks
Can anyone just show us how to create/use/interact with this "catalog"??? All videos are about sales and theory! We know what metadata is. Now show us the guts so we can get to work!
Exactly! Like sn actual catalogue
Where is an actual catalog
Sorry to be blunt but what's the point here , the use case you talk about is obvious and it has already been solved by likes of Amazon and hundreds of e-commerce platforms , so what gives ?
+Arjun SN so why isn't this in every enterprise? Being obvious or a good idea usually does not equal, deployed. Think, search engine optimization is one function, but how do you take that one function and make it useful for data in clusters, different relational sources, appliances or in complex files like Avro / Parquet formats? Even Amazon sorts and stores their commerce and recommendation data in one type of environment... So my question is.. When have we been able to solve the problem of a biz user finding the right document or report or the right source of data... Have not found many offerings that can do that across multiple systems, sources and data types... Which is why Data Catalogs are going to be the next big thing in self service information...
+Garnie Bolling by the way, it's a good question and don't worry about being blunt... Thanks for watching.
is this video for a 5 year old?
When it comes to explaining data catalog to a non tech savy baby boomer..... Yes
