Playing McCree isn't always about headshots, a lot of the time staying alive and placing yourself in the right position is just as important. Flank to much and you'll get caught out, fail to exploit off angles and highground and you'll stunt your impact. Liam does a great job of expanding those ideas, let us know if this guide helped you :)
I'm so glad you mention how McCree is very well set up to defend your healers. This is my preferred play style as McCree, and it's extremely important work because it enables our dear healers to actually do their jobs more efficiently. McCree is so good for this role.
Hey Your Overwatch Fans! I'm a masters McCree player and I also have my own tips to share with you guys! 1. Tanks are your friends! If a enemy tank is vulnerable pump them up with lead! It charges your deadeye faster and helps your teammates a lot, especially against dive comp. 2.Don't be afraid to use deadeye with 2 or 3 targets! Deadeye charges fast if you play right , so if you're in a situation where your team needs some picks go for it! 3. Don't try to pull a AimbotCalvin and try to pick fights you can't win. Positioning as mentioned in the video is extremely important. 99% you're the main DPS damage dealer, so getting picked before fights is bad for your team. Hope these helped ! Keep practicing and good luck!
There's nothing wrong with fanning. It gets a bad stigma for being "nooby" but honestly every single char has some sort of similar bullshit in their kit. Why would you risk losing a 100% free kill just to get some epeen points?
Feels bad to do, feels bad to get hit by. Genji and Tracer don't really have that kind of bullshit in their kit (The only ones I could come up with off the top of my head) but I agree, must heroes have some kind of noobiness to their kits.
Mcegan69 Fanning on a Tracer or Genji just means that you're not confident enough in your ability to get a headshot. Fanning tanks is ok in my opinion because you can get the kill after doing all that damage (most of the time).
Jordan Youssef Unfortunately i have to agree. I'm a good mccree, have uploaded some videos on comp with him, but when i stun a tracer/genji, i'll mostly always fan the hammer because i just want to secure the kill.
You guys have gotten me to focus more on McCree. I've gotten my accuracy up around 40-45%, but I'm still working on getting good use out of flashbangs, fan-the-hammer, and roll. My positioning's also been pretty bad, and this should help out a lot. Still not ready to start playing comp, but I'm getting there.
Playing McCree in a comp game requires skill enough. You wont play him if all you can do is get fan kills. It's ok to go for the sure kill with flash-fan.
There's no point in completely avoiding using it, it's 240 (?) free damage while someone is stunned. I've seen a ton of idiots who try to go for headshots instead, miss the shot and then get killed because they overestimated themselves.
harvey allen im sure the enemies also try to give me a chance to fight back cause they.feel guilty for.the free.kill they get on me for havin close to 0 mobility.
Why would that Reaper give you shit for using fan the hammer. If you just stunned and hit a headshot, he wouldn't have died and would have just wraithed to spawn to heal.
+The Hue Of Hues If the flashbang has a travel time, it's possible, but only if you land the 1st shot the 1st instant you can... which isn't really a reasonable thing to expect on a not stunned opponent.
I love the advice on the Mcree fan the hammer! So many people talk about having to hit the shot but what's better: getting the head shot 80% of the time and looking like a pro or securing the kill 100% of the time and fragging out to take the team fight? Play to your comfort level and what helps the team out more!
I really enjoy playing Mccree in my free time because he really forces you to play and learn a lot of more mandatory skills to get better at the game overall. (Reliable hits and headshots with aiming, positioning, dueling, etc) And the skills you learn from him give a solid foundation to carry over onto other heroes.
Finally an advanced guide on my qp main and possibly favorite hero (along side gengu and Ana) huh....I always kinda dived and get a healer or someone about to ult never realized that doing so is actually something high level mccrees did. I did know most of these things in the video, surprised I already knew most of the things he said.
i love watching you guys play mcree, and ive been playing a lot of mcree and soldier recently been trying to get away from playing off tanks and hes so much fun prob my favorite character to play right now.
i dont understand the hate to fan the hammer(worst mccree ever, noob right click bla bla bla) then genji dash is for noobs because you can kill someone you didnt aimed... i dont care im a noob i use fan the hammer but i win you lose :D
It's the same as Hanzo Scatter, or Roadhog pre nerf. Dying to something that requires no skill at all is simply aggrovating. People don't like "i win" buttons, and there are a lot of those in OW.
Jordan C. Wilde It makes even less sense when you compare FTH to Scatter arrow or old Hog hook because of how tiny an area McCree covers with his own insta-gib. 7 metres in game (if that), compared to Hogs 21 metres or Scatter's...anything really. It's one of those things where if you were killed by it then you really, genuinely made some poor decisions and were punished for being out of position--a term that gets thrown around a lot when on the topic of OHKOs.
I'm a console pleb (yay me!) with an average accuracy of 65%. Stuck in high diamond/low masters right now. I feel as if McCree has more impact than soldier in the right hands. My buddy plays a ton of soldier, and always has trouble killing Pharahs, whereas it feels ridiculously easy for me. I think the burst damage from McCree surprises a lot of Pharahs. 2 mid range shots later and they are 60-100 HP. Throw a headshot in there and you can drop 'em no problem. Also, in regards to the argument between headshot versus FTH, headshot for tracers/damaged enemy heros/tanks (I'll take the 280 damage over the FTH damage, tyvm) and FTH against any hero with instant escape or self preservation abilities. EG: Genji, Mei, Reaper. Otherwise, I'd say you need quick decision making with McCree. Knowing when you can win duels or challenge around corners is huge. A lot of dumb McCrees get picked first because they are either too far forward or challenge duels when they can't get away 100%. He isn't fast. He just hits like a truck if you hit your shots. :D I like McCree. :D
I never fan on tracers any more because I've had them recall away on occasions because the spread allowed them to survive or the fanning took too long and the stun effect wore off. Also, shutting down a tracer with a headshot feels so damn clean
Enjoyed watching you hit shots even without a reticle. I've been having accuracy trouble so I'm still trying to get my dpi and mouse settings sorted out.
Great video Weagal, I'm just super confused on the whole headshots/fan the hammer thing. I think everyone should actively try to hit headshots on squishies (not tanks bc fan the hammer will do more dps). If you can hit the headshots you will have 4 shots left in the clip (takes 2 to kill). If you fan the hammer you have to decide between a reload or using your roll, so its better to just have the 4 shots right?
i love how around 11:00, your team doesn't kill the dva and wait for as long as possible so it takes longer for the enemy team to make their next attack. in my elo, you couldn't dream of players doing that.
This helps a lot, I'm a master but scared to play Mccree in comp because I always get jumped by Winstons, Tracers and Dvas at the same time and can't handle it. Maybe I can learn from this how to avoid it, thanks man :)
Bro ur honestly the best what I say to people when they see me fan the hammer allot I just tell them idc as long as I get the kill and put us up in an advantage who cares I'm here to win
Giving him more mobility wouldn't work for the roles McCree plays. Were his movement on par with the dive DPS's we all know and love/hate, he would be overpowered.
i like to stay on the oposite side of mccree's high ground sometimes because its unexpected. people only notice that midfight and when they do you have a flashbang AND a giant health pack to survive
Killer Lamas I feel the same, especially doom fist, i'll make sure to stun him when he hits a teammate, but the moment i hit him, he's already high in midair having used his uppercut. i expect him to be stunned on the ground but no. And its not like I'm bad or trying to be salty either. I've actually loaded videos on mccree in comp and i do very well so that serves as my evidence.
In some characters cases, it could be the "favor the attacker" system where even if you flash a charging doomfist or something like that in your screen, it favors the attacking player. That's the only reason I can think of. Honestly the flashback post buff feels worse than before imo
I never thought they should've changed it anyway. Its pretty satisfying to still land that headshot on the tracer even while she's crackheading around after being stunned.
After the Hog nerf I was looking for a Hero that would have similar impact in solo queue. Now my Genji is garbage and my Tracer is average at best. Plus neither have that stun i was searching for that is equal to Hog hook. Finally I rediscovered my appreciation for McCree. Flash bang and fan the hammer is my bread and butter. In the current meta, where Genji and Doom can run a muck, McCree seems to be the perfect answer for shutting down the enemy DPS. As long as I'm not whiffing shots I think I'm just as effective with Cree as i was with Hog.
I have a question. Sometimes if a hanzo or a soldier jiggles so ai can't hot this juicy head shots,my mate starts to flame me because I can't kill him. Is it my fold or should I judt don't foght him?
i got like a 75% accurcy on console (ps4). I've played mccree a lot lately and I think about improving a lot. my mccree is decent at the moment. I can play and win with him at master rank. My question is: Do you think it will be a smart idea to play mccree instead of soldier? (i've got quite a few hours as soldier. 4th most played hero and got a golden gun for him)
How long.g do you think until I learn to aim well with hitscan heroes? I got my gaming PC a month ago and it has gotten better, but I get more body shots than an to thing unless I'm close up. It's also hard for me to get headshots with McCree on heroes with weird head spots like D.va as normally with anyone else like soldier, you have many shots making him more forgiving.
Can u do a video on all the settings like I know this sounds dumb but what's better reduce buffering on or off thing like if u could make a video on that would be great
I have a question for really anyone who has an opinion. I really like the flank-noon for attack, usually payload maps, but would it ever really be viable for defense?
The thing about McCree is that, in the lore, he was recruited due to his amazing aim and his resourcefulness. McCree is one of those characters that is always thinking about his next move. Translate that into the player, and you have a damn good McCree.
I recently started to play more Mccree but I still don't know how to stun a rein with his shield up. I tried throwing the flashbang up but I guess I don't have the right angle down.
McCree: "It's over Genji! I have the high ground!" Genji: "You underestimate my power!!" *Whips out the dragon blade* McCree: *Puts gun away as a tumbleweed passes by* "Don't try it!" Genji: "MADAMADA-" *Deflects* McCree: *Waits* Genji: "..." *2 seconds pass* McCree: *Shoots him the fucking face* *Genji eliminated* McCree; "You were the chosen one..! It was said that you would slay the entire enemy team, not get your own killed! Bring balance to the point! Not leave it to be captured!" Genji: "FuckyouI'mgoingtoplayMinecraft" *Genji left* McCree: "Well I tried being reasonable-"
in the stand back and let your team brawl playstyle, why not jut play soldier? he's usually more consistent than mccree. to me it seems like if you're not finding and taking duels, it's hard to find value with mccree
Balam Tryba Mccree takes more skill to be good with, so perhaps most mccrees you see aren't good and adding to the team. If you're a good mccree however, you can quickly kill all the squishys, plus headshot on tanks quickly melt them as well.
sure if you're hitting headshots, but that's true of soldier too, not to mention soldier's sustain and mobility make him much harder to be dove by dive tanks, mccree has tons of power, but i don't really see it being unlocked by standing back and shooting from afar, his damage falloff and lack of utility for that makes it seem like a waste of his potential, finding a way of making duels for yourself and taking them seems like a better playstyle for mccree overall, rather than just playing him as a budget soldier
Angles is the one thing that wins me a 1v3 if i ever do it, i have done it before a few times as zarya simply because i was hopping on the payload and focusing avoiding as many heroes as once using angles, and since they were hungry for killing me if you are able to have a feel for where the multiple enemies are, you can choose who to fight and who to weaken, when you damage an enemy enough you become the hunter and the enemy becomes the hunted and I forgot im still a bronze but yeh
there's a puase in in intro music that fucks up the rythm. but besides that, the extra long build up of the intro was cool. (Haven't watched the rest of the video yet)
I love how when people hate on fan the hammer, they never actually mention health for characters. The characters with 150 health (Little D.Va and Tracer) can be taken out with flashbang/headshot combo (and generally ought to for the sake of saving on reload time). On the other hand, even at close range, the max a flashbang/headshot combo can do above that is 165 damage (25 for the flash, 140 for the headshot). Most DPS/support characters have at least 200 (some even have 250) health, so even with a flashbang/headshot, they do not die instantly. If I can tell an enemy has less than 150 health (always a tricky and on-the-fly judgment call), then I will try and headshot them. Otherwise, YOU WILL NOT KILL THEM WITH FLASH/HEADSHOT. Fan the hammer makes perfect sense then. You're welcome.
@@intrinsic9585 It takes a full second for McCree to get 2 headshots at the rate the Peacekeeper fires. Flash lasts .7 seconds, while FTH takes .67 seconds. That leaves at minimum (not including the human response time elements) with .3 seconds between headshots post flashbang for the enemy to react. In that time, Mei has just enough time to freeze herself or pop a wall between headshots for that not to work. Sombra can teleport away between headshots. Doomfist sometimes has enough shields to survive a second hit and can also get away really fast. Ashe can coachgun away from you. Genji can deflect your shot into your face. Widowmaker can grapple away. Hanzo can dash. Pharah can get back in the air. It goes on, and on, and on, and on, and on...
So I was in this comp game playin mccree then there's this dude in voice chat that said "mccree, spam r2 (yes I'm on ps4 and r2 is primary fire) in a general direction" is spamming primary fire in a 'general direction' a good thing? or nah
Playing McCree isn't always about headshots, a lot of the time staying alive and placing yourself in the right position is just as important. I have the worst aiming as mcree
Net Phant tup same
I have 10 hours and 58% winrate with McCree this season, but i can't get out of plat.
Your Overwatch I really like it when you put a table of contents at the beginning of the video. Aces.
Got it McCree is Obi Wan. He's better with the high ground.
Jeff Detrick Jr 😂😂😂seriously than tracer is anakin xD
lmao
McCree walked into a bar, there was no counter.

You are the best McCree I've ever met. I've never had a McCree run as anti-flank in the backline. And I'm in diamond.
tbh, this is how i use my mccree too, to keep the back line clear, nothing more anoying that those flanking tracer, genjis or sombras

TimYT right here boy!
TimYT 40+ hours!
TimYT here
TimYT Not my main, but I'm practicing with him, I'm doing well in comp but i wanna get much better. He's one of my favorite characters overall.
Right here.

500K subs! Congrats guys! Much deserved! :D
this was recommended so i thought it was a 2020 video, you can imagine how confused i was after the mercy rezz

Why would that Reaper give you shit for using fan the hammer. If you just stunned and hit a headshot, he wouldn't have died and would have just wraithed to spawn to heal.

I feel that way too with Sherlock Holmes skin.
@@Solaris_iv i'd employ whatever placebo i can to increase my headshot probability for comp

My question is: Do you think it will be a smart idea to play mccree instead of soldier? (i've got quite a few hours as soldier. 4th most played hero and got a golden gun for him)
"As you can see I'm hugging this left wall as much as I can"... He says, whilst simultaneously standing on the RIGHT-hand side of the road
But my favorite cowboy is Woody...
I needed this

TOKI WO TOMARE! MUDAMUDAMUDA!
The cringe is real in this thread, holy fuck
I’ve been waiting on this vid lol I think my aim is good but I need to work on my positioning.
Oh nice, I was about to pick up mccree after getting the new legendary skin
What is he referring to when he says "in matchmaking"? is that solo q comp? or just comp? please help!
Crushed Dreams when "Heroes never die!"
Can u do a video on all the settings like I know this sounds dumb but what's better reduce buffering on or off thing like if u could make a video on that would be great
3:28 what did just happened with those two Reinhardts?
I have a question for really anyone who has an opinion. I really like the flank-noon for attack, usually payload maps, but would it ever really be viable for defense?
I loved this vid !!!
The thing about McCree is that, in the lore, he was recruited due to his amazing aim and his resourcefulness. McCree is one of those characters that is always thinking about his next move. Translate that into the player, and you have a damn good McCree.
Translate that into any character tbh
Watching this is July 2018 is so weird seeing that big mercy rez. In hindsight I'm so glad they changed that.
For me his positions is so key, especially his ulti. I main 76 and genji. I do play alot of support, and tank role. I love Anna, Moira, and licoo.
I see what you did there. First tip - get some space - and the video on the lunar colony...
Whats your crosshair for the dot?
I recently started to play more Mccree but I still don't know how to stun a rein with his shield up. I tried throwing the flashbang up but I guess I don't have the right angle down.
McCree: "It's over Genji! I have the high ground!"
Genji: "You underestimate my power!!"
*Whips out the dragon blade*
McCree: *Puts gun away as a tumbleweed passes by*
"Don't try it!"
Genji: "MADAMADA-"
*Deflects*
McCree: *Waits*
Genji: "..."
*2 seconds pass*
McCree: *Shoots him the fucking face*
*Genji eliminated*
McCree; "You were the chosen one..! It was said that you would slay the entire enemy team, not get your own killed! Bring balance to the point! Not leave it to be captured!"
Genji: "FuckyouI'mgoingtoplayMinecraft"
*Genji left*
McCree: "Well I tried being reasonable-"
50 percent accuracy on console am I good?
2:56 where's the crosshair?
Is it me or was Liam not using a crosshair in part of the video?
Great vid. I could always hit headshots but would die a lot
You know what time it is!
2:56 pm
Do you have a channel where you just play comp?
in the stand back and let your team brawl playstyle, why not jut play soldier? he's usually more consistent than mccree. to me it seems like if you're not finding and taking duels, it's hard to find value with mccree
Balam Tryba well, if you land headshots, you can easily kill anyone
Akhilles yes but even pros choose soldier for consistency and no one has more skill than them
soldier's spread is so wide that you do more damage as mcree at the same range since they nerfed his dmg
3:06 no crosshair?
Why did your Tracer not have a crosshair?
Flashbang, headshot, headshot is what I do a lot. I fan tanks, reaper or brig tho
Thank you
Justice ain't gonna dispense itself
MCCREE IS MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER
2:30 where is ur crosshair bro
Is McRae good at high ground
I wonder, on which key is your melee?
So I was in this comp game playin mccree then there's this dude in voice chat that said "mccree, spam r2 (yes I'm on ps4 and r2 is primary fire) in a general direction" is spamming primary fire in a 'general direction' a good thing? or nah
