    I have to say I did follow Dr Berg with his keto advice and lost 15 kg in 3 months. I was very strict with myself and it worked. I was also tracking my calories, eating at my BMR. Because it worked I thought keto was the one and only.
    But then after a while, I became a bit adventurous, thinking "well, let's try the other diets, even if I bounce back, i could just stop and get back to keto and so on."
    So, I switched to higher carb and protein intake (coz I started working out too) and I didn't gain any of my weight back.
    I think what keto did for me is it helped me avoid all the processed food and stuff… which in terms helped me control my calorie intake. I avoided instant noodle, bubble tea, sugar-loaded foods and so on. So I've come to the conclusion that to lose weight you just need to eat healthy and watch your calories.

    I have hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto's disease. I think it's a good idea to avoid gluten in my diet, because it can help alleviate some symptoms of Hashimoto’s. The research is mixed, but since I'm also trying to lose weight, I don't think avoiding gluten is a bad idea for me. Bread spikes my insulin levels, and I feel hungrier throughout that day when I eat it.

    • @Radjehuty
      @Radjehuty 2 года назад +4

      It makes total sense to avoid a food based on a personal experience/sensitivity. If bread is spiking your insulin levels, that sounds like an issue much different from a gluten sensitivity. Bread itself is a pretty calorically-dense food and it tastes delicious. It makes sense why you'd feel hungrier if you happen to crave foods like this. The problem is that Dr. Berg is trying to make many many many logical leaps to say that all these symptoms are caused by gluten. It's a really unfortunate argument to make especially for people desperately searching for their healthy balance in life. If you feel genuinely better omitting bread, keep doing what you're doing.

    While I agree with Dr. LE Norton in many empirical aspects, as a biomedical scientist I would not fully rely on scientific research, which is generally biased and typically difficult to extrapolate outside of the experimental setting (even the most "rigorous" meta-analyses). In addition, I would not disregard the observations obtained from a clinical setting, which are very often overlooked in scientific literature. We have to understand that Dr. EA Berg (I think he does not hold a PhD though) is heavily oriented to the clinical setting, while Dr. LE Norton is heavily oriented to the experimental setting. Both have their perspectives, which are useful, and also conflicts of interests (as almost any health professional). But I do not believe one invalidates the other. They should seek complementarity instead. The truth is that processed food consumption and carbohydrate overeating have contributed greatly to the increased prevalence of metabolic disease, including gastrointestinal disorders, fatty liver, attention deficits and addictions. On the other hand, dose and frequency make the poison. We have scientific literature that supports almost any claim you can think of, but I believe one, as a trained PhD, should be skeptical with oneself too, and consider what clinicians have to say and why they use the approach they do. The clinical setting is EXTREMELY different from the experimental setting, although they can help each other, instead of throwing fire at each other. I believe these two have quite different goals and that's where the clash comes in.
    In summary:
    Eric Berg: mass speaker -> big audience -> most people are metabolically unhealthy who eat tons of bread everyday -> message has to be "bread is killing you". Goal: reduce or even eliminate bread consumption. This will presumably improve health, and I can agree on this line.
    Layne Norton: specialist speaker -> much lower audience -> probably a very heterogeneous audience -> message has to be "bread has good and bad things". Goal: stay neutral about bread. This will just provide a counterbalance to a very skewed message, and I can also agree on this line.

    Hello Layne, as a pizzaiolo aficionado, fermentation either through wild yeast, or commercial yeast (saccharomyces cerevisiae), does not reduce the amount of protein in the dough like Dr. Berg said. But rather breaks down the carbs into more simple blocks. Making it easier to digest. And producing co2 after eating those carbs, and inflating the dough more. In fact, we need high proteins flours, to have more gluten, for more dough elasticity and more puff.

    I am on the spectrum myself. I generally don’t care that much when people say something about autism, especially if it’s a joke, but what Eric Berg said really shook me to the core. My whole life I’ve always felt that I was not normal, or that I was less than, and I’m still to this day trying to work past it, land when Eric Berg says what he says, it perpetuates those ideas that neurodivergent folks are “less than.” I’m sure others may resonate with this too.

    So there I was, chowing down on bread like it was going out of style, right? I mean, I couldn't get enough of the stuff. But let me tell you, it was wreaking havoc on me. I was constantly feeling sluggish, my mind was foggy, and it felt like I was glued to the ground.
    Then, one day, it hit me like a ton of bricks: the bread was the problem. So I made a bold decision - I cut it out of my life completely. And you won't believe what happened next. It was like a fog lifted from my brain, and suddenly, I could see things with crystal clarity. I'm talking about my third eye opening wide, my friend.
    Now, I'm on a whole new journey. I'm honing my newfound abilities, tapping into this cosmic energy that's been dormant inside me all along. Who knows? Maybe one day soon, I'll be soaring through the sky, leaving bread crumbs in my wake as a reminder of how far I've come.

But I gained all that back when I went off of it, and life long keto isn't sustainable - at least not for me. I'm on track to a more sustainable change of diet that involves long-term lifestyle change that allows me to also eat yummy foods in more moderation and without undermining my entire weight loss program. No, Dr. Berg, the question is...why have people been eating bread for thousands of years and even call it The Staff of Life? True, modern day practices of lacing grains with glyphosate is far from healthy, but there are still organic grains and bread that can be enjoyed today. Many people report that when they leave US and go to Europe, for instance, and eat "Monsanto-less" pasta or bread, they have absolutely no digestive issues compared to if they consume grain in US. So maybe it's not the grains but how they are sprayed, processed, and stored that's the real issue. And if you're going to talk about "antinutrients" in grain, then why is it that you highly recommend 6 or 7 servings of vegetables each day, since veggies are full of "antinutrients" such as oxalates, histamines, and salicylates?

I have a hard time digesting foods now. My dietician told me to switch to sourdough, which i have found to tolerate much better. So when he said the sourdough thing, i thought, how easy is it for him to take a piece of something true FOR SOME and spin it to look like thats what we all need. Its crazy making! Well fat provides the flavor and aroma for food, so people might end up eating more since fat makes food tastes better, thus bread is not the only trigger food. People can eat what they want as long as you do not go overboard.

    I have a question; I've heard a lot of mental health professionals recently saying that inflammation can cause depression and anxiety, and that a gluten-free diet will improve symptoms. Is there any actual research and truth behind this, or is it just a truism that's been repeated? Because it leaves me feeling like if I'm not willing to never eat things I like, I'm lazy and will never get better.

      Overeating can cause inflammation and therefore it may indirectly cause depression and anxiety due to associated health effects. A gluten free diet may inadvertently result in the individual eating less.

    • @marcdaniels9079
      @marcdaniels9079 2 года назад +1

      @@drrohanfonseca So as Layne has explained endlessly many things cause inflammation and in itself inflammation is not “bad”; exercise causes inflammation. Are you talking about chronic systemic inflammation? I would be interested to see the evidence that overeating ( and a definition of this nebulous term) causes this inflammation. You claim inflammation causes depression and anxiety … really ? Evidence please since Layne specifically says there is NONE and what are these associated health effects you mention? And saying a gluten free diet may result in a person eating less means nothing. It would be just as easy to assert that a gluten free diet results in them eating more.
      Basically your comment makes zero sense.
