Everyone’s so eager to tear this movie apart. I went to watch it on a whim, haven’t even heard of the book before or seen the trailer. Wait where's the bit where she grew up in India but her parents died of disease? That was one of the most important parts of the book. And where she stayed a while with that family with about six sons. Also, *why was there fire?*
Yes I agree, the 1993 version was haunting enough on its own. Almost like there was a ghost presence - Colin's crying made it sound scary, Mary's dream about her mother, Archibald's dream about his wife which brought him home, the kid's fire ceremony, the abandoned wing of the house, and the swing constantly blowing in the breeze by itself, swinging. Oh man, I get chills thinking about it now, it was all just perfectly eerie enough! Perfect for the mind of a 10 year old child, scared and alone in a big, drafty, and unfamiliar house, with no one to properly love them. The house did feel dead and haunted, and you got the feeling that with the reuniting of Colin and his father, the garden alive, and Mary added, everything became pleasant again. The unhappy ghost is now resting in peace. :-)
@@kaniisadora2423 it’s more like that wasn’t the point of the original book. Adding supernatural elements just takes away from the power of finding your own happiness and making good out of the bad and just says “oh, well here’s some magic to make you feel better”. It disconnects from the idea that people can change their own lives for the better if they are just willing to try.

If they don’t address her time in India, this should just be a new movie. Don’t call it a remake if it strays too far from the source material. 🤞🏼the cgi doesn’t kill it & it does for today’s kids what the 90’s one & book did for us.
I'm still going to watch this movie and enjoy it but this is one of those movies that I really don't want a remake for it, I watched The Secret Garden (1993) only 3 years back and it never felt old, actually, it was magical. there are tons of other good movies that need a remake, this one is not one of those movies. The only movies that need a remake are the ones that had old CGI, someone needs to call Hollywood and tell them that.
@Buffyslyth Because some of them were so good that Holywood busy bodies think a good idea to give them 'another chance' (the 'Chance', in this case, is for their pockets.) It's a proof of lack of creativity by screenplay authors as much as the big bosses of movies industry, who cannot come up with anything more interesting than remaking a movie - which was a hit in its own time - overloaded with special effects and some sort of artificial fantasy. Perhaps in one or another case there is a good result, and this very remake of 'The Secret Garden' might have something beautiful and interesting to watch, nevertheless such kind of 'adaption' as SicParvisMagna123 mentions above, in truth is nothing more than stealing the fantastic idea of Frances Hodgson Burnett's wonderful book and giving it a 'makeover'. P.S.: Personally, I feel the 1993 version of the book is unforgettable and unsurpassable.
@N nOni I agree!! I don't want this experience to destroy the one I had after watching the 1993 version. But I'd still like to watch this because it's my favorite book
Do you really think the 1993 version is the only version that exist, hate to break it to you ,but this has been remade six times ,1949, 1975, 1985, 1993 ,a cartoon version and 2017 a Steampunk version, not to mention a musical and a sequel.
The spell was broken,my uncle learned to laugh and I learned to cry,the secret garden is always open now, open, awake and alive, If you look the right way... You’ll see that the whole world is your secret garden🦋
I grew up watching The Secret Garden (1993) and loved it. A few years ago I bought it on DVD, and am excited to show it to my daughter when she gets older. I can't imagine any other version of TSG being more magical than the 1993 version. It helped me to appreciate gardens and flowers and taught me what wick was and meant! As an adult I have been trying to recreate my own, small, secret garden. It's magic and heartwarming version never left my memory. I'll give this a try, because I love costume drama, and this story, but I already know which will version will never, ever be topped. It's one of, it not my favorite, movie.
Honestly, the producers really could have taken "that less is more" lesson here. This is wayyyy to much. If anyone knows the book or 1993 film, this film will only disappoint. I bet that they will try to remake A Little Princess too and just destroy it....agh oh well.
This looks a little weird... The Secret Garden is baby's first Gothic, not... this vibe... Not sure if I'll see this, but I'm excited that Colin Firth is in the role of the uncle. Perfect casting there.
John Lynch who played the Dad in the 90s version is one of the most underrated actors. He's perfect and heartbreaking in the role. Not that Colin Firth won't do well, I just want to credit an unknown actor.

Nothing can compare to the absolute drama and tear-jerker that was 1993’s _The Secret Garden_ and its beautiful musical score. Dame Maggie Smith starring as Mrs Medlock. Kate Maberly as Mary. It’s an all-star cast. The children are sooo dramatic, the actor who plays Craven is so intense yet completely melts and falls apart by the end. I’m literally sobbing by the end, myself, when the theme song by Linda Ronstadt ("Winter Light") comes on. I don’t know, nothing can top that version for me. Maybe because it was my childhood. But the acting, human and animal, and the scenery in the Yorkshire Moors, is just stunning.
omg first little women then the secret garden .... we're rlly getting all the childhood stories as films in 2020, my copy of the usborn illustrated classics for girls is THRIVING
Secret Garden was already a movie as well. I don't see it as being too different other than Mary's supposed to be "ugly" & Colin, an annoying sick brat.
Was really excited to take my Daughter to this but it seems too fantastical. I liked the 90s version with it's gritty look and how nature can be magical all by itself. 🤔
Show your daughter the OG ones like the new adaptations have just been made for money like the OG ones were for money aswell but more for enjoyment and yes I honestly agree so much I really wish film makers today would stop washing movies with CGI and embrace what’s given to them rather than making things that aren’t real (also the gritty look is what I miss so much like film makers never use it anymore and that’s what made movies from the 90’s so nostalgic 😔)
One my favourite book of my childhood it brought special memory I feel so sad yesterday I heard the worst news of my life my heart so broken my dad been diagnose as cancer patient and we hide it from him because we want him to go through treatment without mentally be pressurised please everyone pray for him 🤲
What made the 1993 film so great was how adult and grounded it was with it's bleak and eerie atmosphere and how the kids acted like real kids around each other. I'm not really getting that with this trailer but I'll still give it a chance.
Yes the 1993 version was definitely a masterpiece and also one of my most beloved movies. Still the point of new movie adaptations is to bring the story back to life, especially for younger generations and to discover maybe new aspects of the story that are relevant to our current time. New content won‘t take away the content we already have and love, so why not be open to it?:) But yea the trend to include CGI excessively in any new children’s movie is getting on my nerves, too, I won‘t lie.
True, but I would argue that kids are probably already inundated with tv shows and movies that are already filled with CGI. Is it too much of an ask to have a kid sit down and watch a slightly more boring movie to change the way they look at movies? I certainly didn't have a solid grasp on these concepts when I was young, but having seen the 1993 version multiple times, I'd say it's one event in growing up that helped anchor me to the magic that is nature, as well as to better understand the dance between life and death. I think adults, at the very least, don't have a problem seeing past the fluff to get to the real content, but kids being so impressionable, it would seem that the added CGI was an attempt to dumb down the original story because movie execs think kids are incapable of understanding nuance or to gain an appreciation for the magic of nature. Still, I am open to seeing this newer film, and possibly the 1987 version since I read that Colin Firth was in that one as well.
Can't tell what the movie has to offer until I've seen it, but from the music, the vibe is really different from the 1993 version. Have you heard that one's soundtrack? Less 'heroic adventure' like this trailer's song, more 'magic within the ordinary'.

esden pleaseeeee what movies have they black washed tell me I want to what movies have they black washed and I can tell you 5 more they have white washed let’s go
Colin Firth was the full-grown, war-time Colin in the '87 version wasn't he? Making him the uncle in this version years later is a neat little throwback. I've seen a bunch of versions, and they're all unique and have their own interpretations of the classic tale. I've read the book two or three times and loved it. As long as I don't dwell on the differences of the book and movies, I can appreciate the art of them all.
Sad to see it'll be a leftist alt-history version with totally period-accurate Africans inserted just so English kids don't get any ideas about "our" country, "our" history and "our" literature
Well, I guess that is messed up already. The probability that the youngest generation may know the book and who wrote it (a most remarkable author Frances Hodgson Burnett was) is null. They go to the movies to watch such strange adaptations of originals and think this is it. The book is a timeless story of innocence and courage as much as love and friendship, but above all about the power of Nature. And THAT garden!... Absolutely gorgeous. The 1993 movie made a great adaption of the original story and all the actors and actresses were simply perfect for each role.
The 1987 Hallmark version will forever hold a special place in my heart. It's very interesting to see Colin Fifth playing Archibald Craven, considering he played the young adult Colin Craven in the Hallmark version. I'm not sure about this being the third imagining of the tale. Surely someone in Hollywood has an original screenplay to be produced. That's not saying it's not a story worth telling, however how many different versions have to be made?
It is such a good story, I have loved it and read it over and over since I was a girl. I never really get tired of seeing it. I too noticed that Collin Firth was in the old version as well. And to think the first time I saw it I had never even heard of Collin Firth! It was not until many years later while re-watching the video that I noticed it was him. I just re-read the book at Christmas time because I had bought it as a gift for my grand niece. There was also a movie version in 1949 with Margaret O'Brien which I found online to watch. They turned the robin into a raven! That was weird! I guess in those days they did not have the filming technology to do a tiny robin. I look forward to the new version just because I love the story but this trailer looks a bit too fantastical, I am afraid it might be disappointing. Sorry for going on and on but having been in isolation for so long now, I don't have many people to talk to, so I am rambling. LOL
The movie was pretty good though and also movies are never really usually to the tea as the books. They used to be but now people have different views so they do have a right to change it as they please
This film shaped me to the person I am today. Growing up I always loved things related to this film. Which is why one day I plan to live in a tiny cottage with a huge garden. The interiors will be floral. Then colored in pastels. With vintage furniture and alot of antique stuff.
When you say "original" do you mean the 1919, 1949, 1987, 1993 or 2017 movie version? Or perhaps the 1952 -1960, 1975, 1987, 1991 and 1994 tv series version?
@@apaaf9553 Hi Kapa Taf, I would appreciate it if you could tell me which a) Movie version and b) TV Series version is your favourite and perhaps why you choose so. I apologise in advance if I am troubling you. Thanking you in anticipation.
I don't know if this will be as good as the 1993 version, which I absolutely love, but I hope young viewers like it. It has promise, despite the criticism here (some of which I agree with.) The actress seems like a good fit for the part.
This isn't Narnia. Not everything is about grandeur and magical spectacle. Secret Garden is a story about discarded, broken kids and garden healing each other, that's it. That's why it's so powerful, because it's bloody simple!
The 1993 version was my favourite, they chose the perfect cast for each role. I don’t see as to why they have to make a new one? Just hoping it’s going to be good, the secret garden was my childhood 💗
I literally laughed out loud at this trailer. It's just...so typically David Heyman, who, let's be honest, has become a kind of British Michael Bay. This has been dumbed down into "adults don't understand magic/beauty/fun and a cookie cutter orphan tomboy has to insert herself into an absurdly toxic and fantastical family situation." The graphics are overdone (what about the slow beauty of the moors?), the decay in the great house is comical, the story overdramatized for villains and destructive events, and the cinematography makes it look more like "A Series of Unfortunate Events" than a Frances Hodgson Burnett novel ever would. The source material is unrecognizable in this "adaptation." It should more accurately say, "loosely inspired by the timeless novel." The 1987 Hallmark adaptation, I think, is closest in heart to the characters and their growth in the novel (but the '93 version is fine minus Medlock being a villain). Derek Jacobi is the best.
I just want to say that reading this book just as it is, you know without these magical stuffs added into it, is already impactful and appealing. I hope that these fantasy elements will not ruin that. When I read this book as a child, it deeply affected me down to my heart and I hope that this movie could do the same :
I'm confused so you guys wanted to see the exact same thing when there is already a movie that is a perfect copy off the book. If that was true then their would be no point in the movie, that's why it has changed a little. To make it "The Secret Garden" ofc but to give you a little run for your money. I think that they have made this movie really good and you can't lie the quality was amazing. Yes the 1993 film was already perfect but give this a chance too. It may not be perfect but it sure was lovely. I give it a 9/10.
The secret garden movie 1993 is magically perfect with it's natural and simplicity. It's a classic and undeniably timeless. 🥰 The 1993 move was absolutely perfect!!!
Yes!!! I would read this as a kid chapter by chapter each night before I went to bed. It filled with my dreams with magic and enchantment. Can’t wait to see this movie
If the reason it’s not premiering in theaters is COVID-19, that does make me sad. But we do need a great uplifting story to be shown to us lately, right? 🐞
This trailer is better than the last which caused so much uproar from those of us who adore that book, or the different dark and faithful older movies, most especially the 1949 version. Two main things that will make or break it for me personally; Colin Firth (who I adore in most instances) must actually seem angry and nasty in the beginning. He must portray hateful and distant and cold in a way that maybe he is not comfortable with as a person to sell the true transformative powers of a little quiet garden. He must not say hateful hurtful things and then make a sad or consiliatory face afterwards. AS with the house, it must be so dark, so dim and uninvested in any sort of future happiness that your blood runs cold just looking at its dark twisting passageways, same with Collin who must not show any redeeming qualities what so ever at first, almost beyond repair. That is a message, souls who are seemingly beyond repair, so damaged and injured and lonely that they can do nothing but increase that feeling in others. AS with MAry herself who at first is such a hateful nasty child,, demanding and prejudice. The dark and the hate and the anger itself has to be something felt in the bones, cold and sheer like a cliff. and in that way, the tiny peeps of color, the tiny scent of fresh air and blue sky; the little shards of green; then bird song; then untangled masses of flowers and ground cover, bit by bit that itself broadens into corners of the house and hearts. It is the story of opposites that brush up against each other. Like in painting, the delicious quality of simultaneous contrast. Colors on the oppostie of the color wheel that bring out the best in each other when place side by side. I want to give this film a chance. this trailer is better than the last.
Yes but they changed it a bit. Honestly, I'm curious about it. It's something new. It would be more ridiculous and disappointing for me if they just repeated the same thing. This one was less about the book and more about the personality of the movie
I love these kinds of stories!!! I wrote one myself, I wanted to write something great, yes I’m not gonna lie, I too wanted to a good bank account, but overall, I wanted to inspire the kids, good kids, kids who less fortunate. You know the poor and abandoned kids, and adults too, the good ones, the ones who would appreciate it. But most of all the kids, but then God wants the kid to look up to him, so I decided not to go ahead with it, have t got to see this one, hope is a good story.
If they do this new movie "remake" the new generations never would discover the masterpiece of The Secret Garden 1993 and the book. The magic was enough in the 1993 movie and book because of the history and the nostalgic and the beauty. And then, I don't like too much the CGI in this kinda stuff; and Mary was supposte to be a selfish and spoilt child at the start bc she slowly learns how to be a kind person that's what the movie is about (how she learns to love). That was the whole essence of the movie and they took it away 😣 They should make new and original movies instead of ruining the classics with their remakes
I am currently reading this book! It's amazing I am not even halfway through but enjoying it This is the really first book i am ever reading THEY REUINED IT! COMPLETELY REUINED IT! *DUDE THE BOOK IS SO AMAZING IT'S FANTASTIC, FABULOUS BUT THE MOVIE IS NOT AT ALL GOOD*
I think we all saw the 1987 made for tv hallmark version first before the 93 movie. Both were good. Special effects have come a long way since then, why not make something visually stunning?
People, please. The old one or the new, this story is still beautiful. You should know that not all remakes of movies are the same as books. Be thankful that people took the effort and money to make such a good book, and inspiring at that, into a movie that we can all see. With magic or not, it's still beautiful and unique.
The movie doesn't need to be exactly the same as the book, but integrating real magic removes the natural element of imagination. I understand some changes, and drama naturally has to be added. The book was pretty calm and nothing big and exciting happened, so I see why a few changes need to be made, which I'm ok with. Actual magic, and house fires, and all that is too much. The original author had a vision and wrote exactly what she wanted, the filmmakers should only change a small amount of things here and there, or they remove the author's idea and creation.
So this is a new story then :”) because half the elements that made up the original 1993 version, has been burned up in the fire that wasn’t in the book

@@vampbites89 yeah but people need to quit complaining, they aren't the director so they have zero say in how the movie is produced. If they don't like it, don't watch it. They should quit complaining and get on with their life,
If they don’t address her time in India, this should just be a new movie. Don’t call it a remake if it strays too far from the source material. 🤞🏼the cgi doesn’t kill it & it does for today’s kids what the 90’s one & book did for us.

Very true
Hi
like
I'm still going to watch this movie and enjoy it but this is one of those movies that I really don't want a remake for it, I watched The Secret Garden (1993) only 3 years back and it never felt old, actually, it was magical. there are tons of other good movies that need a remake, this one is not one of those movies.
The only movies that need a remake are the ones that had old CGI, someone needs to call Hollywood and tell them that.
It's not a remake, it's an adaptation of the novel, there's a difference...
@@SPM0717 adaptation *
Do you really think the 1993 version is the only version that exist, hate to break it to you ,but this has been remade six times ,1949, 1975, 1985, 1993 ,a cartoon version and 2017 a Steampunk version, not to mention a musical and a sequel.
The spell was broken,my uncle learned to laugh and I learned to cry,the secret garden is always open now, open, awake and alive,
If you look the right way...
Oh no no no, please don't, not A Little Princess too!
NOOO, i love that story please that cant be next...
Lmao they better not touch a little princess!
I love both the Shirley Temple and the 90s Little Princess as well as the book, so if they make a new one I will cry
@@dnersargaren8677 they did a version of A Little Princess in the 90s, not very good
This looks a little weird... The Secret Garden is baby's first Gothic, not... this vibe... Not sure if I'll see this, but I'm excited that Colin Firth is in the role of the uncle. Perfect casting there.
He plays Collin as an adult in the 1987 version.
My thoughts exactly! Imagine seeing a Jane Eyre adaptation with this vibe 😆
@@kathrynmiller4240 I just pictured Jane doing the weird spitting thing they did in the trailer and saying dramatically, "I am no bird" xDD

John Lynch who played the Dad in the 90s version is one of the most underrated actors. He's perfect and heartbreaking in the role. Not that Colin Firth won't do well, I just want to credit an unknown actor.

I saw it a bit different. She said "I'm no lady, sir." which I took to mean "I'm not too high-and-mighty." Basically, I read it as more a comment on social class than gender.
The 1993 version was perfect! The soundtrack was phenomenal. Why must Hollywood keep remaking good movies? Leave these classics alone.
I love the one made back in the '90's so I personally don't see the need for a remake.
It's an adaption of the novel, not a remake...
@@SPM0717 , If they can find a unique way to reinterpet it ( like Little Women) Ok,maybe..
omg first little women then the secret garden .... we're rlly getting all the childhood stories as films in 2020, my copy of the usborn illustrated classics for girls is THRIVING

Exactly. The story was so subtle and they kinda just turned it all into 'oh yea it's magic btw'
and the soundtrack of 90s one is way better
Show your daughter the OG ones like the new adaptations have just been made for money like the OG ones were for money aswell but more for enjoyment and yes I honestly agree so much I really wish film makers today would stop washing movies with CGI and embrace what’s given to them rather than making things that aren’t real (also the gritty look is what I miss so much like film makers never use it anymore and that’s what made movies from the 90’s so nostalgic 😔)
My girls saw this new version, then later I had to show them the 1993 version. They really liked it!

You have amazing imagination brother

Colin Firth was the full-grown, war-time Colin in the '87 version wasn't he? Making him the uncle in this version years later is a neat little throwback. I've seen a bunch of versions, and they're all unique and have their own interpretations of the classic tale. I've read the book two or three times and loved it. As long as I don't dwell on the differences of the book and movies, I can appreciate the art of them all.
He was! Which is indeed a potentially fun throwback.
Glad to see the new generation will get a version of this classic.

i hope they dont mess this up because back then when i used to read storybooks, this was one of my favourite, powerful story indeed
It’s severely messed up.
LOL
We really didn’t need or want a remake...

You all are so homesick! I loved this new version. Of course, there are things you can't match, as Maggie Smith
Another day, another one of my childhood favorites being made into butchered movie adaptations seems like
I literally laughed out loud at this trailer.
The source material is unrecognizable in this "adaptation." It should more accurately say, "loosely inspired by the timeless novel."
The 1987 Hallmark adaptation, I think, is closest in heart to the characters and their growth in the novel (but the '93 version is fine minus Medlock being a villain). Derek Jacobi is the best.
Watching this remake, if you have not know nothing of the film, you would have thought it as a horror story
I just want to say that reading this book just as it is, you know without these magical stuffs added into it, is already impactful and appealing. I hope that these fantasy elements will not ruin that.
When I read this book as a child, it deeply affected me down to my heart and I hope that this movie could do the same :

Oh I see. I was wondering how they'd get their requisite Diversity in there. Well done.
Exactly and this is why I’m never showing my children, nephews and nieces any new bad remakes like I’m only ever showing them the OG movies
The musical score is more than enough for me to get interested in this, I hope the story holds up

They already did like there was no fire in the book, the 1993 adaptation was the best and this one will never be better
