I also own a 2021 Tesla Model Y LR. My HV battery died twice, at 68k miles and 118k miles, both times replaced under warranty. Both times got the same type of error messages you did. It is not the supercharging. Supercharging does not harm your battery. My Tesla was charged only on level 2 at home 99% of the time, never more than 80-90% and I still had problems. You will be given a refurbished battery with a 50k mile warranty, no matter how many miles are on your car (if you have less than 70k you are still covered until 120k). I very much doubt it was caused by your refrigerator or any devices charging, they charge off the 12V system, which is maintained by the HV battery. This is very little stress compared to driving the car. The main thing you want to avoid is prolonged SOC below 20% or above 80%, but that is just for degradation, it shouldn't cause faults. I've heard of many 2021 model year Tesla Model Y's having this issue, it may be an issue specific to the battery used in this year. Now I am saving to have $15k before my car reaches 168k miles, when my warranty runs out. I may just trade it in for a newer model. Other than this issue, great car. Good luck to you.

Mine failed a couple of months ago under warranty. The cool thing is I have a Standard range Model Y and I elected to have Tesla replace the battery with a brand new LFP battery. They also upgraded the suspension because of the additional weight of the battery. With the LFP battery, you can charge it to 100% regularly.
Dont charge LFP to 100% all the time, even the battery guru Jeff Dahn says so. The BMS needs a 100% batt to read the capacity, but the batt does not need or like 100%
That is a fallacy. Degradation is exactly the same as an NMC battery although cycle life is 2x. Charging to 100% is to calibrate BMS because of the flat voltage curve from 50% to 100% so the BMS cant tell actual charge state from simple voltage measurement.

It's kinda cool that you're able to live in your Tesla and I'm glad you were able to replace the battery under warranty because that would really suck to do it out of pocket. I kind of want to live out of my Tesla just for fun and for the challenge and freedom to go explore other places, but I have a family lol. Not gonna lie, though, if I had a Tesla when I was 20, I would have just lived out of it. You got this, bro! Hopefully with the new battery, you'll just let the battery get down to 50% and let it charge up to 80% from there. I was living in an apartment with my 2021 Model Y Dual Motor Long Range for three years until buying our new home (so now we charge in the garage at night). During the time I was living in the apartment, we would take the car to charge at a supercharger when the battery was like at 30% to 40%. So, hopefully, that didn't degrade our battery. I actually want the battery to last for 500K miles rofl! Love what you're doing and hope you achieve all your aspirations! Be safe and be well!
This alert is pretty common on 2020 and 2021s. A quick trick is if you disconnect the low voltage battery and reconnect it, it will reset the alert. The alert is a cell imbalance. Good thing it happened at 113k and not 121k!

The way to avoid all these issues with a Tesla or electric vehicle is just don't buy one ...get a hybrid. Charging is just too much of a hassle and not worth it especially in the winter time
I suggest you run a separate battery pack for your fridge and other electronic system outside of the car. Using your car battery 24/7 will have some effect on it... Glad you’re alright. This was one of my worst fears while I was temporarily living out of my 2022 Model 3 Long Range. As of writing this, I have 129,361 miles that I accumulated in a little over a year traveling the country. Engineering Explained does a good job on talking about battery degradation. One of my “tricks” was to find a hotel or some other place that has level 2 charging on the PlugShare app and act like I’m supposed to be there. So long as you’re quiet and don’t draw too much attention to yourself, it honestly works 99% of the time. But you have to play your cards right - experience with the area you’re in helps a lot. Some of them are known to kill the breaker to their chargers if anything looks fishy outside. Aside from not Supercharging as often, shallow charges seem to help a lot. Obviously you have to balance practicality, but if you can stomach only using between 30-70%, go for it. 20%-80% will yield similar results too.
Nico, I do not want to judge or anything, but it is really sad, to see that in the USA, people have to live in their cars, even if they are honest hard working people. I find it hard to imagine how economically friendly it is to constantly replace batteries all the time. Is there a battery recycling plant? How much of the battery is actually recycled?
I would do a full 100% battery charge with the new battery swap to see what the new battery health is (checking how many miles it has at 100%). Hopefully it's a new battery
Another tip for your battery, never charge to 100%. If you charge to 80% and discharge to 20%, your battery will literally last twice as long. Glad Tesla told you that fast charging all the time is not good for the battery. Fast charging can also be up to 10 times more expensive than level 2 charging. Take care.
But then your range is only 150 miles by charging from 20-80%. I have a 2023 Tesla Model Y LR and plan on going back to gas such as a Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid with over 500 mile range. I'm currently limited by the areas I can travel because of the low range of the Model Y. I recently did a 1,400 mile road trip from northern California to Joshua Tree park and spent about 4 hrs charging on the road in total with 8 stops. I even started from home with 100% charge!!! Long road trips are a pain with all the waiting to charge. I miss the days of 2-5 minute fill-ups with gas. I'm waiting to see if a new redesign is announced for the 2026 Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid at the LA Auto show in November. Maybe the Toyota batteries last so long since they are only level 2 charged. Electric cars are fine for daily commuting and around town, but not good for road trips and exploring remote areas. Gas stations are everywhere and you can also carry and extra gas can with you. A 5 gallon gas can would be good for an extra 190 miles at 38mpg on the Toyota RAV4 plug-in.
Fortunately you got the loaner Tesla to move into. I'm already feeling for you, for when you have to repeat the whole moving process back into your own Tesla. . When your video went back in time to you having the battery problems in your car, I thought it was the loaner car having problems too, and I was thinking just how bad your luck was, but then I realized it was more on the the problems with your car. Good luck to you, and it already seems like good luck that your battery failed just a bit before the warranty expired and you get one for free. If the battery let you travel around for just a bit more,as you know you would have been paying a lot for a replacement.
Most of these failures ar due to a bad BAttery Management System (BMS), not actual bad batteries. But in any case, you just got a great free upgrade. Newer Tesla batteries seem to use newer/better BMS chips, so you are less likley to have future issues.
Notice the error says "Reduced maximum charge level." I just wanted to make this clear for other people watching/reading is that this is not an error due to you hitting some sort of maximum number of DC charges but rather the BMS noticing an error in the battery pack and adjusting the safety maximum limit it has to be very low. The BMS has a sort of failure state it can enter when it thinks that the battery is not functioning correctly. If you hit that state, it is independent of DC fast charge count but rather that some battery measurement was not as expected.
His battery pack died due to degradation. More than likely one or more of his cells is too greatly out of balance. Most likely what happened is he was continually discharging 80-90% of the battery at a time which is why it died
@@overnightclassic2 My point was that degradation alone does not cause that error he saw. It may be something like degradation combined with some cell group being out of balance that triggered it to go past a balancing setpoint, but it is not just degradation. Furthermore 113k miles assuming 225 miles per charge (lesser efficiency + lots of idle usage) is 500 cycles on the battery. Thats not crazy for battery lifetime, and supercharging really is not some insane charging C-rate which is what matters for battery longevity. On youtube there are some teslas with extreme degradation that drive and still can DC fast charge, so it is probably a combination of factors.
@@ErikMeike Once you hit 20% degradation it is the wild west as to whether your battery fails. I'm guessing he got unlucky. There was a tesla on youtube dying at 120K miles within 2 years from uber usage. This is not much different. He had 500 discharge cycles at 90% but he was also running AC. Not suprised if he was closer to 1000 cycles. Combine that with calendar aging from the heat where he lives and it's very possible his battery just died from degradation and cell imbalance
Every Tesla has a 8 year warranty fir HV battery replacement. Not sure about maximum mileage covered for yours. You should check with Tesla. Mine just got replaced for the same issue only at 31k miles.
I don't think people understand that a gas engine can literally last forever but a battery has a very limited life span. So in reality EVs can only go down in value.
Are we talking engines/motors or fuel? What you just said makes no sense The electric motor can go much farther than the gas engine. I've never heard of a forever fuel engine that actually gets used anything can last forever if it's not used. Now yes fuel sources very different.
@ChezzyDirt dude it makes perfect sense have you seen the batteries on an electric car!? It's crazy expensive to replace maybe you should do some research on what Tesla charges to change the battery! Also the motors are small the batteries are the heart of an ev where the engine is the heart of a combustion. There is a video guy bought a Porsche ev wanted to trade it in the next year to get a 911 and the dealership wouldn't take it!!!! Evs are scam
Lol nothing lasts forever. Engines go all of the time - with or without proper maintenance. Also, virtually all cars that exist go down in value. It's extremely rare for a specific car to go up in value. Only very special cars go up in value.
@googlewolly you are not being honest sir. You really believe that an EV 40 years from now will be a sought after classic....Never going to happen they will be all junked, maybe stripped for parts but most likely they will all end up in a car graveyard.
Man good thing that battery failed before the 120K mark, that's when the warranty would end, at that point I think you gonna need to pay for that HV battery replacement 😅. But like someone says in the comment, fast charging (DC) doesn't seem to be damaging the HV, as long as you don't charge to 100% all the time and let it sit with 100% for a long time. I've met someone with a 2020 Model 3 with 170k miles and dude uses supercharger 90% of the time lol, but his HV still running fresh with 86% battery health. So I guess you're just out of luck with your HV. Glad you're not in the middle of nowhere like you said. Goodluck with the next adventure man!
Woow, one week to replace the battery. That's the future right there. Glad there weren't any companies in the past (Better Place) that replaced batteries automatically in like 10 minutes.

Last year the same thing happened to me, but since I was transporting a Server Grade UPS for my work. I just hot wired the UPS to my Tesla 😂😂. (Don’t worry, as soon as I got to work I had it towed)
Dude, sorry to hear this recent turn of events for you. You’ve convinced me not to ever own a Tesla though. Range anxiety and super charging possibly ruining the battery = a no go for me. I’ll stick with my 17 year old hybrid vehicle that has not had any problems to date with the battery.
Driving to less than 20% does NOT hurt your battery. A soft reset is primarily for screens and nothing to do with charging. An easy big reset is to reset the tire size (read your on line manual) and then back. Your car will do a near total reset and many problems can be cured/cleared.
My 2015 Tesla Model S P85D that I purchased new has the original battery. I'm at 140k miles. Elon said to charge to 90% and plug in all the time back in 2015. I have dual chargers (inverters) in the MS and my HPWC (High Power Wall Connector) charges at 80Amps at 240Volts (19.2kW). My battery degradation was at less than 5% after 100k miles then went up to 8% at 130k miles. I have lowered the charge rate to 80% for the past 6 months. Even though I have free unlimited supercharging for the life of the car, I only supercharged mainly on long trips. My unlimited miles and 8 year warranty for the drivetrain came in useful when the rear drivetrain had to be replaced less than 1 month before the 8 years were up. I noticed a strange noise from the drivetrain that progressively got worse and I took it in to the Tesla SC. I had to pay about $1k for HV cables replacement which I thought would have been covered by the warranty, but apparently not. I have had the anxiety of my Tesla with critical malfunctions. My first MCU1 touchscreen went out in mid Feb in Ohio at 1am. -5 F outside temp, no heat, no A/C and my windshield and windows immediately fogged up. My headlights would not work. Pressing both toggle buttons on the steering wheel did not help nor did the other reset by pushing the top buttons. This caused a catastrophic error and my MS would not even charge at all. Tesla wanted $8k for a new touchscreen. I had the extended warranty but it expired after 100k miles. I took apart the entire dashboard to remove the MCU emmc chip. I sent it to a guy on the west coast who said he may be able to fix it. He couldn't because it was so trashed. Tesla warned me that if I tried to do any repairs, they would not replace the touchscreen. I had to put everthing back together and match the paint on the screws even lol. It took a couple of days for the work to be done and Tesla eventually reimbursed me after I sent a letter to the NTSB. I have a Cybertruck now for 6 months and charge to only 80% and only charge when battery is at 25%. Good luck and be safe!
Smart man! 80% is a good number to charge to Thats what i did but still got the issue Well actually every now n then i would charge to 100% maybe i did it too often? Then again i had a tesla fridge plugged in for 6 weeks non stop before the 12v update

Did you have to come out the pocket for that?
@@baldpnoy410 Are you stupid?
Dont charge LFP to 100% all the time, even the battery guru Jeff Dahn says so. The BMS needs a 100% batt to read the capacity, but the batt does not need or like 100%
Interesting option. I have a 2021 model y sr too. The range is already terrible on it. Is it better with the lfp?
That is a fallacy. Degradation is exactly the same as an NMC battery although cycle life is 2x. Charging to 100% is to calibrate BMS because of the flat voltage curve from 50% to 100% so the BMS cant tell actual charge state from simple voltage measurement.

Thanks fir this yea plugshare is my best friend!!!
Excellent video! You're blessed to have that pack replaced.
Take care.
Exactly i just read an article on forbes that said superchargers constantly is bad for the battery as it increases degradation
Level 2 chargers are better for the battery health

Go 2024 Honda CRV Hybrid AWD Sport L. 450 mile range bro. You can drive all over in comfort and safety and film your videos.
Most of these failures ar due to a bad BAttery Management System (BMS), not actual bad batteries. But in any case, you just got a great free upgrade. Newer Tesla batteries seem to use newer/better BMS chips, so you are less likley to have future issues.
Yeahhhh its my fault
I'm happy that Nico was able to get it fixed though and Tesla followed through on their warranty and that Nico can continue on his fun adventures.
Shit battery in a dodgy car that's the truth !
What year ?
@ChezzyDirt the car as a whole
Lol nothing lasts forever. Engines go all of the time - with or without proper maintenance. Also, virtually all cars that exist go down in value. It's extremely rare for a specific car to go up in value. Only very special cars go up in value.
@googlewolly you are not being honest sir. You really believe that an EV 40 years from now will be a sought after classic....Never going to happen they will be all junked, maybe stripped for parts but most likely they will all end up in a car graveyard.
Thanks!

You plan to sleep in your car too like him?
Your hybrid car can be a house and save gasoline money in the mean time?
Smart man! 80% is a good number to charge to
Thats what i did but still got the issue
Well actually every now n then i would charge to 100% maybe i did it too often?
Then again i had a tesla fridge plugged in for 6 weeks non stop before the 12v update
I keep charge between 30-70 percent and super charging only on road trips

Thank you. I appreciate the car and I really like it but I’ve finally decided to just buy a boring Toyota Camry. It’s not even comparable in performance but it about the same in cost per mile. I’d really like to have the Tesla but can’t justify it for an everyday commuter. You have a good channel. Hopefully you’ll have a place to call home soon.
@@hongshi8251 If you charge at home, you could save more than half.
i am not really sure how are you able to survive with your current situation.. i stalked your youtube views and it's not performing well.. in 14 days you have estimated 15,000 views and that should have an estimated income of 12 dollars for 14 days. that's really crazy... just apply for a real work, rent a house, sell your car, buy a cheaper car and start over once again. the way i see it, you are afraid of change. but change is what makes us grow up.
Haha i have superchats too fam u need to factor that in since your stalking me ✌🏻
Who are u a life coach? I bet u think u know it all and people find u annoying smh
Buy a cheap gas van and live on it don't pay rent.
Battery warranty ends at 120k miles I believe! So as bad as it is it could have died right after wareanty
Thats so true im so close it too
sounds like the car (Tesla models) chassis is ready, but the main gut (battery technology) isn't at the same level if you had even think about balancing between super charger and level 2 charging for prolong the vehicle. i will give it another decade for electric vehicles to become true roadsters without any worries beyond the regular maintenance and occassional break downs like today's ICEVs
Nico, do you know what the cost would have been to replace the battery system if you didn't have the warranty?
I was reading like $10k-$15k
How long is the warranty?
@@ericmed 8yrs 100k-150k miles... Depending on the model you get.
I don't think supercharging all the time is necessarily the issue. There are Tesla taxis out there with 200K+ on them, some with over 400 and 600K and they are supercharged exclusively and haven't had battery issues. Curious to know what they found when you get the car back.
I love the grounded reality of this channel!!
Retirement took a toll on my finances, but I am so excited with my involvement in the digital market. $37k weekly has been life changing. Regardless of how bad it gets on the economy.
Hello how??
I'm a born Christian and sometimes I feel so down of myself because of low finance but I still believe in God.
@@KuramaUchiha-id1owMaria Angelina Alexander I really appreciate her efforts and transparency.
Giving her my initial savings of $12,000 to invest in a brokerage account was a turning point in my life. It's been an incredibly rewarding experience and the best decision I ever made!
I would really like to know how this actually works.
Investing can be a powerful tool for building wealth and securing financial stability especially in this hard time. but it’s important to understand that it’s not without its challenges. The investment landscape is inherently volatile, with periods of both gains and losses. This variability is a natural part of investing and requires a clear strategy and patience to navigate effectively.
I would never want to do this..... not that I'm financially stable to do it..... I really believe these are good for around town.... go 80 miles to Rochester and back but not for what you're doing
I can’t believe you paid that off instead of buying a Nissan sv van or the ram small van and building a nice car camper. Gas and oil will always beat electric in the long run.
@TaylorBoldt-lq9fw my words exactly.
Nope, now way. I’ll stick to my Diesel and gas vehicles. Thanks for sharing your experience.
If it’s not the 12 V, I think it’s the fridge you have in the car running off the battery
U may be right
I was running that fridge 24/7 for 6 weeks non stop
@@NicoMurillobro cmon now lol
the fridge runs off of the low voltage system and his HV is what crapped out. the fridge isnt the reason
@@James-cq9dp low voltage is connected to the high voltage. Made me think of the bone song lol. Head bone is connected to the neck bone lol Anatomy class hates this song lol 😂 and if that fridges is draining the low voltage constantly it feeds from the high voltage no?
Why not level 2 charge overnight so you can run the hvac while charging and not lose range, plus you have a place to park overnight
Man, I really feel bad for all the EV owners out there who are being used as guineapigs to test these early stage EVs. EVs simply aren't worth it until we get EVs that last 800 miles on a single charge. Forever grateful to my father for earlier warning me back in 2018/2019 that these EVs are going through a guineapig testing stage. This just adds to the long list of reasons I'm staying clear of them even as someone who really wanted an EV as their first vehicle.
In the mean time, enjoying my 2012 Highlander Hybrid with 220k+ KM and still going strong and reliable.
When that battery goes dead and it will be after 120,000 you're done because how much is the battery?
Miled
Im cooked
@@NicoMurillo the same with electric bikes
Does warranty restart since you get new battery ?
I didnt ask hmm i’ll ask
I doubt it. There is no way Tesla will give you another 8 years / 120k miles on the HV battery.
I guess God have you new battery sooner before warranty run out! Take it as good 👍
If the replacement battery pack fails again after warranty, he will have to replace it out of pocket. Tesla does not extend warranty on warranty replacement. 8 years or 120k miles is all he gets. If you choose to replace the battery pack out of pocket though, Tesla’s warranty is 4 years 50k miles.
Congratulations on burning out a battery while it is still under warranty; every EV owner's goal. A few more tips for preserving a battery: 1. Avoid high states of charge for prolonged periods. 2. Avoid high temperatures (especially in combination with high SOC.) 3. Avoid deep cycle usage, e.g., it's better to go from 60% to 70% five times than it is to go from 20% to 70% once.
it's better to go from 60% to 70% did u go to gas gas station very 15 mins?
@@jianbinchen2881 10% daily charging is more than enough for my 60 km commute. On the occasional road trip it makes sense to go through deeper cycles of about 50%.
you stealth camp? get a Honda Element. you LOOOVVEE IT.
I do stealth camp! Ive been wanting to make a bed build similar to those in the elements
Single bed with the pull out accordion drawers
I got the model Y 2024 dual motor on lease, I can say this car is disposable not a car to keep it or get on a loan, good luck 👍
Toyota now!
This is one of my biggest fears :/ I’m in the market for a tesla. Gonna finally switch to EV but should I be worried? Is this a common thing? Thank you! Hope you got your car fixed and good as new again
No im living in it so its a special case
I wouldnt worry because i run my car unlike any other human being would as living it it i use the power for a longer duration of time
@@NicoMurilloupdate: just got a slightly pre-owned model 3 lol. After watching some of your videos you def convinced me. Thank you for your content ! ❤️
Model s 2016 here. I'm at 250k. No issues at all.
LFG!
Drive units still original?
@@ceylontea5877 Yes.
Do you charge at home daily?
Just turn it off and back on that usually works on my phone
To be fair, I'd only get a hybrid if I could try to game the hybrid battery by a ton of use over the warranty time too.. if life steers me toward car camping some time in the future.
I wonder if LFPs would fare better with daily supercharging
Im not sure, they would be better since they say u can charge to 100% on those
Wowoweeeee! Brand spanking new battery! Hopefully, they put in an LFP instead of NMC.
Its a remanufactured HV battery swap!
