    That elephant is in a state called "Musth." During this state their levels of testosterone are as much as 60 times higher than normal, and they display extreme levels of aggression. They have been known to kill rhinos, and in zoos their keepers during musth.
    You can tell from the dark streaks down either side of his head. Elephants in musth discharge this from the temporal ducts, the swelling of those ducts cause pain similar to a root abscess.

    The elephant just get annoyed with the stubborn baby hippo, nevertheless, he did not mean any harm to the baby hippo. Look how he tried to push the stubborn baby hippo away. He could have crushed it easily if he wanted to, but he didn't. This shows that animals do have feeling and definitely way much gentle than some of their human cousins.

    • @alexwu6373
      @alexwu6373 8 лет назад +19

      Ariel Lu "Everything is out there to eat their children'? Seriously? Animals are not as dumb as you think. Your "everything" there may apply to carnivores and herbivores. Hippos know that elephant don't eat them and vice versa. If they know the opposite are predators, they would have avoided each other long before they come too close. This video just show inter-species social contact, which sometimes could be a bit unruly.

    • @annehaight9963
      @annehaight9963 8 лет назад +30

      Animals avoid unnecessary physical conflict whenever possible. It wastes energy, and risks injury. Injury in the wild can easily have serious consequences; they don't have hospitals to help them. A wounded carnivore may be unable to hunt, and will starve. A wounded prey animal may get caught and eaten. That's assuming the injury itself isn't lethal. This is why so much confrontation among animals is ritualized, especially between males competing for females. The idea is just to say "I'm capable of kicking your ass, therefore I'm better". Essentially, they have an imaginary fight and the "loser" backs down.

    Elephants are stereotyped as circus-like and friendly, but in reality they can be very intimidating. I wonder if other related creatures like mastodon/wolly mammoth acted the same.

    • @annehaight9963
      @annehaight9963 8 лет назад +1

      Elephants are so big and strong that they are very dangerous even when they aren't trying to be. It's partly why zoos have moved to "protected contact" standards when dealing with elephants; keeping heavy fences between them and human handlers.

    • @TheDr502
      @TheDr502 4 года назад

      Mammoths and mastodons were as big or bigger than modern-day elephants (i.e., as big as a box truck or larger). I can't speak on mastodons' intelligence since there isn't enough research, but mammoths were likely very intelligent like today's elephants, considering they had a similar brain structure. Mammoths also had a temporal gland, which helps contribute to musth. I wouldn't be surprised if mammoths acted similarly to elephants (ex: increased aggression during musth periods).
      Elephants can be really friendly when they're in a good mood, but you're right. The monstrous size, the huge tusks, the loud roars. They're cute, but intimidating as hell at the same time. An animal that can stop powerful animals like crocodiles, lions, rhinoceroses, and hippopotamuses in their tracks is automatically dangerous to me.

    I think this bull elephant is aggresive because he is in Musth. Musth is a periodic condition in bull elephants, characterized by highly aggressive behavior and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones. Testosterone levels in an elephant in musth can be as much as 60 times greater than in the same elephant at other times.... elephants in musth, discharge a thick tar-like secretion called temporin from the temporal ducts on the sides of the head, same as the elephant in this movie.

    I think he wanted the baby hippo for himself, alive. Animals do this from time to time. He seemed to be very careful not to back step on the hippo. Then he tried to find what he had lost. They know how to kill by leaning their tusks or mouth with their weights behind it. This was more like an interaction between species. And I'll conjecture: The slapping with the trunk was to let the hippo know he was there and probably hoped he would follow him.

    Mean old bull! He was trying to kill the poor baby hippo. I'm glad I watched until the end. They posted a statement saying the baby hippo lived and is still there in the park. God is good. I was so worried for the little baby. All the other hippos left and he had nobody to defend him...not even his mother. I wonder why. Maybe the hippos thought that the elephant was too big, too strong and too crazy! What's odd is that I've heard/read that hippos kill more people that any other animal in Africa. I'm just glad that the hippos calf lived!

    That little hippos was not going to back down. "Hey mister this is our pond. You go somewhere else" Either that or he thought it was playing with him. The bull didn't really hurt him. He was just trying to move him out of there. He probably couldn't figure out why he wasn't going.
