Mitsubishi used to make great cars. I'm not sure what happened over the last decade or so, but they no longer do so. Which is a shame, because great efforts like these were what made the brand so special. It's a shame there isn't too many of these left around. They were great cars.
@@jczerozerotwo3071 my mother owns a new outlander model. It's just a gussied up Nissan with more fake chrome. It's nothing special. Just another boring crossover with a CVT in it. Mitsubishi can't seem to make anything that appeals to it's previous buyers, and those buyers moved on. If I bought a galant in the 90s, I surely wouldn't bother with mitsu these days. @@LrulestheworldM8 it is the same car as the nissan rogue but they do look different especially on the interior. I also like the mirage but would only get the manual options of model 2022 and previous as nissan cvts are pretty bad yeah haha

When people realized they couldn’t afford the payments after a year of no payments, and had no equity, Mitsubishi would get overwhelmed with repos which would impact resale on all models. I've always really liked this generation of Galant. A nice looking car for the era. Fairly popular at the time, though I think it was far outsold by competitors like Altima, Accord, and Camry.
I remember it was 2001 they did 0 down, 0% APR, and no payments until January 1, 2003. You could get invoice on them too. I’m south Asian and we all saw that deal and bought them 😂 half the families in my community still have them

My frat brother had a white one in top trim, same wheels, spoiler, roof, etc. as that one - I drove it around a lot while we were pledging 22 years ago; such a smooth car for what it was back in the day. RIP Mitsubishi, Galant, Diamanté, 3000GT, the REAL Eclipse, Montero, et al. given the brand only doles out imperceptible crap these days. smmfh
You know what I liked most about Mitsus? The cigarette lighter plugs are on the accessory circuit instead of always hot. Everyone else does it the other way, but it made wiring in a dashcam and a radar detector brain-dead easy on my Eclipse GT.
Like many Asian, but unlike American front drive cars there was definitely a level of sophistication. You can see it in the dash layout and especially in the engine bay.
We had a Diamante wagon and sedan in the family fleet in the 90s and rented a Galant in the early 00s. Loved these cars. I slammed the Diamante sedan into a telephone pole in '01. Walked away with some seatbelt burns and a hurt knee from hitting under the steering wheel. Very safe!
My 1996 ES had illustrations, capacities, service intervals and maintenance info for the 2.5L V6 that got cancelled at the last minute. The Chrysler cloud cars got that engine, but Mitsu held off until the 8th generation and used the 3.0 version of the 6G series. The 4G64 2.4 SOHC was ok, it was an American-targeted big displacement 4 cylinder with good torque and low end power. Mine used a quart of oil every 250-300 miles! I loved that car, though. It had a premium packaged with the GS styling elements (blackout trim, glass foglamps), the VR-4 split 4 spoke wheels, a trick head unit with oh-so-Mitsu 7 band physical equalizer, an AUX port, and 6 speakere that sounded decent (they put mids in the dash to cut down on rattles). The pictograph auto climate controls similar to the Diamante and 3000GT were available in the LS. They killed the GS off after 1994 to allow space for the never-launched V6. With it went the hood with the power bulge, the DOHC engine, and its manual became available only on poverty-spec S models. The Normal, IL, plant that built this and other DSM cars now builds Rivians.
My folks and I rented the '95 Galant(same basic car) during a trip to central Florida in 1996. It seemed like a comfortable, competent driver for its day. I'd still drive one, if I could locate one with low miles and a moonroof.
This was before I was born but my dad had a 96 Galant until he leased a 03 Outlander. I've always like this Galant because I felt it was such a unique style and it looks better then An Accord although I love both.
This car looked great and felt like a fair competitor to the Accord...until the warranty expired. 1:18 - A V6 never arrived in this generation, as far as I recall.
This is nearly a 30 year old car! 😧 I keep thinking new car aesthetics and design is getting too futuristic, but I guess it’s just that a lot of freaking time has passed.
Had a 1995 Mitsubishi Galant S, 4 cylinder with Automatic Transmission, basically a good Japanese car, but, some issues with the Automatic Transmission.
i had this car for six or seven months then sold it, it was nice. Quiet engine and kinda fast for a 4 cylinder 5 speed. Black with gray interior and moonroof. Swapped in some 6x9's and mmm nice sound. Honestly dont even remember if it was the single or twin cam but I think it was the single cam cause the engine didnt have twin cam kind of noise and was a quiet engine. Plus, the clutch on it was herky jerky compared to every other manual car Id driven. If you let out the clutch smoothly, the car wouldnt just lurch and crawl like any other manual car and it would buck like crazy. Wasnt worn out or anything like that cause it was the early 2000's and this car had like 60k on it so it was a baby IMO.
Good luck. They are all gone. Oil burners, timing belted interference engines, delicate transmissions, no parts availability, low resale, rust prone bodies, owners who largely never cared for them, not particularly good sales numbers new.
I absolutely love this car, i owned one, it was super reliable and economical, i wish mitsubishi brings back galant and lancer. I would also love to see montero and triton in north America
This car was such a looker. If it had matched the refinement of the 92-96 Camry of the day, I think it would've stood a chance, long term. But Mitsu's dealer network and experience was atrocious, and combined with poor resale of the brand heading into the late 90s/early 2000s, it wasn't helped. I also think the release of the '94 Accord kind of shadowed this car. It was new that year too, offering a radical departure from the '89-'93 generation, and offered a V6(albeit anemic) to match the Camry. But I've always loved this generation Galante and Diamante. Very beautiful cars for the time period.
The Galant and Lancer need to come back. The Mirage sedan isn’t going to cut it. All Mitsubishi now are either Made in Japan or Thailand for the Mirage.
May 5, 1993? These came out pretty early as '94 models (July 1st of 1993), but were being advertised before that, so that makes sense. Funny how Mitsubishi was making a big deal about being "first" in its class to have standard dual airbags and meeting '97 side impact standards, even many other '94 midsizers had them standard as well a few months later.
I was wondering what was up with that random small bulge on the hood. Then I remembered it was there in my Eclipse so the cam cover could clear. Sure enough it looks like there's a 4G63 in there with that tall cam cover
That's a 4G64, a 2.4L version of the Sirius engine. The bulge was only on the GS trim, which was only available in 1994. The GS came with a DOHC version of the engine and matching power bulge to clear the taller DOHC head, all other 7th gen Galants in the US had a SOHC 4G64 and flat hood. Mitsubishi killed the GS DOHC trim and engine to sell a 2.5L 6G73 V6 version, but killed it last minute. My 1996 Galant had full 2.5 V6 info in the owners manual, despite it never being sold to the public. Chrysler offered this 2.5 in the Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring convertible, and DSM/Galant-based Avenger and Sebring coupes. Mitsubishi eventually offered the 3.0 6G72 in the 8th generation 1999-2005 Galant.
Weird to hear all the negative comments on the prior gen model, I always thought that was the looker - especially in VR4 form. These just came off as a complete 90s mehmobile.
Mitsubishi was on a path to becoming a threat to Honda, Toyota, and Nissan in the USA until they got to the late 90s and decided to give car loans to the most risky customers with bad credit. From the late 90s to mid 00s the decline was underway. Now their offerings in the US are very sparse and few if any people buy a Mitsubishi because they want one. It is more of a case of that is all they qualified to buy. So sad that we will never know what kinds of sports cars the 3000GT or Eclipse would have become in this era. Even the Galant could have become a very high volume seller like Nissan Altima if they would have improved it more than they did until it was pulled.
They made millions of these cars back in the 90s and were everywhere. They were supposed to compete with the Camry. A decent car for the times. They just didn’t hold up like a Camry.

I agree. One of their best designs that isn't a sports car.
Hearing John mention the Eclipse and 3000GT in the beginning... damn, Mitsu, what the hell happened?
