    Congrats, Steve. You're only the 2nd auto reviewer who avoided the word "Fiata" in describing the 124 Spider.

      I said going in that I wouldn't do it! It became cliche about 5 minutes after the car was announced. I did find myself calling it the Frittata, however...just for fun ;-)

      and fiata in roman dialect means "bad breath", so it's a weird name to give to a car

    I like it. It has a more masculine look than the MX-5

    Regarding the Nav knob setting/ Nav not installed in the car, one of the greatest things that Mazda does with many of their options is to make them plug-and-play. Whether it be fog lights or Nav, you basically can buy the parts needed for them in the service department and install them and they work. I believe for Nav, you purchase a memory card, there is a slot to install it and once you do, you have Nav. For the fog lights, you buy a different light switch stalk that has the extra functionality for the fogs and the fog lights and surrounds. All of the guts to make them work are there. Mazda is awesome like that and they were very obviously the leaders on the engineering of the new Miata and 124. That is why the knob has that setting even though the car itself doesn't yet have Nav.

    Such a great little car. I hope they sell like hotcakes so they'll be around for a long time! I'm beginning to see some on the road-other than mine. Even though I had an MX5 a few years back, this car is sweeeeeet! I'm now getting over 32mpg with mid-grade.Thank you Fiata! Love the turbo and the styling!

    I'm still a bit torn between the Miata or the Fiat 124 Spider. Having said that, I would like to see a everyday driver vid since the real world doesn't allow one to drive that crazy. In addition, I would like to see how each car handles in real life situations like stopping and going on bumper to bumper traffic parking etc.

    Much much more reasonable price in the US for this car.. In the Netherlands where I live this car in Lusso trim is 40K euro (45K US dollar), which is absolutly rediculous.. But the biggest reason I had to pass on it was that it is to small for me.. I cannot fit in it properly being 6"3 (191cm) with the roof up.. Having owned a classic Fiat 124 Sport Spider and fitting in that no problem it was really a surprise to me this new one is smaller then that car from the 1960's.. So in the end I got me a used E89 BMW Z4 30i instead, which I now use as my daily.. Not a bad alternative at all I can now say..

    So I test drove a 2017 Fiat 124 Abarth in White with Black accents on the outside. Looked really good. The test drive however did not impress me. The clutch felt heavy to me, way too heavy for a sports car. The throttle response was delayed by turbo lag off the line. Notchy shifter too. Positive side was the gauge cluster was nice with the Red tach / seats felt good. Quiet exhaust note. Next day went to the local Mazda dealer they had a 2016 Club soft top with Brembo brakes & BBS wheels in White with Black ground effects. On the test drive 1st thing is the light clutch feel was absolutely the best clutch I've ever felt with a round shift knob that had an easy pattern. Instant throttle response made this car very quick off the line. Around the turns it cornered with a lighter more athletic feeling. I wanted a daily driving car not a garage queen & this MX-5 was by far the best between them. Bought it after the sales manager gave me a weekend test drive. Its been 4 years & it has been the best car I've ever owned. 1st convertible / 1st MX-5 ! In snow the winter tires go on & the fun does not end ! Really good in snow too.

    I'll be getting one of these, can't wait....to replace the Mazda Mx5, it has the rear end of the MkII thta attracted us to the Mx5 when we saw it, low on the road. Fiat have made a better grill at the front. Both companies need to take a look at the cockpit, brown and cream leather, wooded steering wheel, walnut trim, etc. I'll wait for the limited edtns to start appearing, do not like the look of the Abarth versions. Let's hope the Italian engine is as reliable as the Mazda's.

    Steve, would you say that you prefer the 124's classic styling over the aggressive and futuristic looking Miata styling?

    • @stevehammes
      @stevehammes  8 лет назад +1

      I can't decide. I'm leaning Mazda on the styling but both have merit.

    If you can do it, I would love to see a video comparing the Miata and 124 together back-to-back and comparing the differences in the two cars- basically where each car shines compared to the other.

    • @stevehammes
      @stevehammes  8 лет назад +1

      I wish I had the chance...because having driven the Miata a year ago I lost some of the nuances. Sure, I can look back at my notes and watch my own video but it's not quite the same as driving them back-to-back.

    with Fiat (no led headlights, apple carplay) and Mazda cutting corners (no homelink on club model, apple carplay), and Fiat dealers not ordering Fiat 124 Abarth with brembo brakes, I'm taking a closer look at a used Porsche Cayman.
    Hopefully, Fiat fixed the problem that the Miata has with the canvas top rubbing the frame in the down position and ripping a hole.

    Steve, when you reviewed the 2013 Dodge Dart, you did not like the 1.4L multiair engine. Is the 124's weight reduction enough to make the engine enjoyable?

      Isaac DeJong Exactly. This is by far the best application of this engine thus far.

      Both the Miata and the Spider are without a spare tire. They give you a flat fix kit with electric compressor and they have electronic tire pressure gauges on each wheel.

  • @tmeo9712
    @tmeo9712 7 лет назад +1

    Ok, this car is 80% manufactured in HIROSHIMA, JAPAN - see window sticker. 20% of the car is made in Italy and none of it has to do with anything you would want from Italian engineers. This is a Miata with a FIAT badge and better sound, but it is NOT an Italian sports car by any stretch. You are more likely to find rotten sushi in the glove box than a slice of pizza.

    • @m.goodpickle9609
      @m.goodpickle9609 7 лет назад +4

      So? It looks better and drives better than the MX5, in my opinion, but as other reviewers have said, it comes down to personal taste. I had a 2000 MX5 before, and I drove a new one before I decided on the Spider, and couldn't be happier with my choice.
