Jonathan, I've just finished Pines (WayWard Pines Trilogy #1) by Blake Crouch and it is pure genius!! I had read Recursion (a 4 stars for me) by the same author, but this book (which is previous) is way (wayward) better. Maybe Blake Crouch got to be known and popular with Dark Matter but it is his previous works that we ought to pay attention to. That's exactly what I'll be doing from now on. Reading everything he published before Dark Matter. I bet it's utter and complete excellence. I super recommend to you that you try them as well.
I liked both Dark Matter and Recursion. But, tbh, comprehending parallel realities was a lot easier for me than coming to terms with back and forth memory travel 😄.Btw have you reviewed Upgrade by Mr Crouch?
Great review! - I think it's interesting how it's a direct comparison between the two books too - I loved them both A LOT, but didn't see them as similar as other people seem to think they are...I think his style of writing is consistent, but that's a good thing I think. I'm now delving into his other books - I'd like to do a Blake Crouch video in the New Year. Obviously you say you don't quite get the divide in opinion, like me. It's great that both books are so good.
Thank you! I think there are some broad similarities, which is why they get compared. But I agree, they are different stories, both of excellent quality!
@@ajaxslamgoody9736 I watched the Altered Carbon show and it was good but very violent. I haven’t read Wayward Pines but I plan to next year. I really enjoyed Dark Matter and Recursion by Blake Crouch.
I've read Recursion first (and loved it) and I'm on the last pages of Dark Matter now. I agree with you that both have a similar pace and "cinematic feeling" to it and that's great. But I felt that Recursion is a bit more "hard" on the sci Fi elements and explanations. Also Recursion felt a bit more creative in general and more "visual" to me. To me Recursion is a 9/10 and Dark Matter is a 7/10. I'm gonna start Upgrade next.
I hear whichever people read first of Dark Matter or Recursion seems to be their preference? I've only read Dark Matter but plan to pick up Wayward Pines. Recursion isn't really on my list rn due to the "direction" it goes, personal ... non-preference? lol
You might be right, that could be the case. You may enjoy Recursion but if the premise doesn’t interest you, that’s alright, there’s plenty of good books out there that might be more to your taste. Let me know what you think of Wayward Pines when you read it!
Blake Crouch has been getting a lot of play on BookTube and for me personally I just don’t get it… I guess he doesn’t connect with me like he does with so many others…Don’t get me wrong his books are fine and very readable…I still recommend them but I ask those that do decide to read them to temper their expectations based on the hype that they receive in reviews and on BookTube…For me Recursion was slightly better than Dark Matter but both are 3-3 1/2 ⭐️ or 6-6 1/2 ⭐️ based on whichever ratings system you prefer…again they are fine reads and recommendable but not the sensation that seems to be more the consensus for Goodreads/Amazon reviewers and BookTubers…Getting to know the channel and liking it so far…Keep up the good works 👍🏻
@@WordsinTime I am subscribed to him as well…I hadn’t heard his take on Blake Crouch and will have to go check that out…I have heard the Christopher Nolan reference and it doesn’t surprise me…this concept has been covered in dozens of movies and TV shows…another BookTuber compared his writing as a contemporary or new Michael Crichton…to be honest I was taken a back by that comment and find it far inferior to anything Michael Crichton has ever written…I began to wonder what book that BookTuber was reading…totally inaccurate characterization in my opinion…
@@WordsinTime When I finished Dark Matter I thought "That was really good! And this Blake Crouch really likes alcohol!" Then I picked up Upgrade and the very first sentence in the book is an alcohol reference, hahaha.
