Great review. Very thorough and thoughtful. I don’t know if you’ve read any other Blake Crouch books, but I find if you like one, you’ll like all of them. I enjoyed Dark Matter. I like your thoughts on the ending being pretty dark because all of these other people are unfulfilled.
To enjoy this book, you have to just accept the science that is presented to you at face value (similar to interstellar or inception). If you can get that point, it’s a heartbreaking novel about human choice and regret. Yes, we follow the Jason the makes it to the end, but there are infinite number of Jason’s that made the wrong choice and have to live with that pain forever. I also think Blake Crouch is trying to drive home that a life without regret is not really a life at all. We have to make wrong choices before we can make the right ones.
I read the book when it came out and i was thinking about it FOR DAYS! A month ago I heard they were making it into a tv series and I was so excited! I really liked the actors that Blake chose. I think Jennifer is portraying a really good Daniella!
Makes you feel bad about Jason1's original reality. Even though they went off to "hopefully" a better place. An infinite amount of Jasons are going to come out of that box. What does that reality look like after a year or two?
I had the same thought. Unless one of those Jasons decides to seal the box again, new Jasons will continue to show up. Even if that happens the damage has been done. Eventually that detective and or other police are gonna happen upon the Jason corpse that already litter the final area the family hid out at and even after the box gets sealed it's possible that detective might try having that area searched after connecting the oddity of that one guy going missing for awhile suddenly returning. She did say his phone's last ping was in that area. So what's to stop her doing a more determined search of that area. I think in all likely hood the box ends up in the Goverment's custudy and ends up getting the SCP treatment where it's sealed into a controlled zone while they work to figure out what the hell it is. I have not read the book but seen the show based on it so not sure if the books delved into this but it's my assumption that Jason 2 is actually the original Jason. I think Jason 1 is the alt world Jason 2 visits. It might explain why we don't see any alt versions of Jason 2. Because Jason 2 had sussed out how the box worked before he used it and had a plan so there wasn't really room for alternate choices. He had it in mind the moment he entered and left it while we see countless Jason 1s because of how Jason 1 went into it blind not knowing how to control it. Though one could argue the times Jason 2 showed off the box to an alt version of his pal could result in more Jason 2s as his choice of worlds to show that guy might have room to diverge. (I already forgotten that dude's name. :P ) So maybe there's a lot of those versions of Jason 2 floating around. That's even scarier because while there's probably a slow stream of Jason 1's flooding the world. The Jason 2 branches from that point could be exponentially worse because that Jason 2 fully understands how to control where it goes so any branches of Jason 2 that occur WILL make their way back! Mean while there's a decent chunk of Jason 1's just dying from entering end of world timelines that end up killing him. That's not really happening with Jason 2. Anyways it's a shame the show doesn't delve in the aftermath of all the Jason clones. It's definitely gonna leave an impact on that world. Perhaps the book explored this but I doubt it. Haven't read it though so maybe it did... :P EDIT: Now that I think about it that world is clearly gonna be on a quick path to an end of world scenario if that box doesn't get sealed soon. Eventually one of the Jason clones is gonna bring back a bad virus or something. We already see the Jason we follow visit a world hit by a pandemic. What if a version of him wasn't as careful and brought over said virus and infects that world! Or something similar to those giant wasp things happens? Yeah that's a ticking timebomb right there. That world is ***ked. Maybe it's for the best we don't see what happened aftewards because it's probably not gonna be fun to watch. :P
I remember Jason said to his family that they would have to break the box or something like that, and they also travel using the son's cognition so the other jasons wouldn't know where they went. What could be a really interesting sequel would be to know what happened after the family left in their original world, as there were over 100 Jason there and a lot of Jason's bodies around the city. Wonder what the police, government and the jasons did after that, asuming not everyone has the liquid...
Good summary. At the end of the season there should be a brief montage showing many of the situations/ instances in which Jason & Amanda didn’t make it….
Hey regarding all the many versions of Jason, they do have something. There should be many versions of Daniella from all the other realities that happened after the abduction
i read the book recently and i loved it. feels very much like something michael crichton would have wrote. the only other Blake Crouch book i read so far was Run which was also very good but i like this one better
The book was great. I anticipated what the ending could be and it didn’t bother me at all. I’m happy it happened that way. SPOILERS When they went to the cabin and it was snowing, I was terrified because I thought they would end up being the dead family Jason and Amanda found that they moved upstairs. I wonder if Blake did that on purpose
I just don't think Jason* changes enough in a month that some variants would bring a gun near the family. That part seemed a bit odd.

All I see is a talking head in this video. That’s one hell of a camouflage shirt.
