Today we're making the Sloe Gin Fizz! This is a classic bubbly drink that's a perfect late summer/early autumn drink. Technically sloe gin is not a gin, but a gin-based liqueur. It's sweet, fruity, slightly tart, and easy to sip on or mix into a drink. This recipe is fairly simple, so I thought it'd be fun to mix it up with a few different spirits to see how they enhance the drink. We'll keep sloe gin as the base and try renditions with Navy Strength Gin, Cognac, Pisco, and Campari. Experimenting like this can inspire new flavor combinations and drink recipes. Enjoy the lineup! Cheers!

While it may be a lower ABV drink, Loretta Lynn and Jack White taught me that Sloe Gin Fizz works mighty fast when you drink it by the pitcher and not by the glass.

If you're picking sloe berries yourself either wait until after the first frosty nights or throw the berries into the freezer for a day. If you don't do that the berries will be extremely bitter. After they've been frozen they'll still retain some bitterness, but most of the tannins will be broken down to bring out the unique flavor.

It's similar with persimmons. I pick them frozen solid, still on the tree.

The quality of your sloe gin is sooo important. The bright red stuff you’ll find at cheaper prices is horribly medicinal. Otherwise a fun cocktail and perfect to sip on with one of them Ander’s dad hats. Ha! Cheers, Anders! 😉🤙🏽🥃

Fun fact about the sloe berries. They are sour but you usually harvest them after the first frost. Thats when they become a little sweeter. Im todays age you can harvest them and just put them in the freezer for 1 or 2 days and have the same results. We have sloe berry bushes in the fields and I think I am gonna get some this year.

I would like to share with you my sloe gin fizz recipe gerrilla style. In Spain it is not so common to have a slow gin but in all homes is very common to have patxaran, a similar liquor but with an anise base.
    ---
Guerrilla preparation: without a shaker and without syrup
In a glass or jar, add the juice of half a lemon and half a tablespoon of white sugar. Stir with a spoon until the sugar dissolves.
Add the same amount of gin and stir.
Add the same volume of gin plus the lemon in patxarán. Stir or recap the jar and shake.
Cover the glass or jar with large ice.
Complete with bubbles (selzter water or even tonic or sifón)
Flavor the edge of the glass with lemon peel and drop it inside.
    ---
I've got similar recipe with patxaran, some spoons of amatetto and jinger ale, but for today.
    Cheers

Sloe Gin! I tried and picked up a bottle of an artisanal Italian sloe gin when I was in Venice. My favorite cocktail I've tried with it is the San Francisco: it's equal parts sloe gin, sweet vermouth, and dry vermouth, with a dash of angostura and orange bitters and served with a Luxardo cherry. I think it's what I'll serve at my Christmas party this year.

Sloe Gin Fizz was my mom's favorite drink. I learned how to mix it for her when she wanted one. I was about 15 years old then. She made one to her liking, and I tasted it to ensure I could match it. It must have been the "red medicine" stuff, as I never came around to liking it.
After trying your recipe, I can say my mom would have been overjoyed with how yours tastes!!

While Plymouth is the premier sloe gin of record, it is a bit pricey and somewhat overkill for a mixed cocktail. If you are looking for a more affordable but authentic sloe, my wife and I recommend Hofland. Just of few bucks more than the "red medicine" brands but so much better and is a good choice for mixing. We celebrate Sundown Chill daily with a Bourbon Black Hawk made with Hofland sloe gin and Jeffers Creek bourbon. While many Black Hawk recipes call for just the sloe and bourbon, we like to give it a little edge with a bit of lemon juice and smidge of sugar to balance it out. Soooo tasty.

I don't have sloe gin. I can't really get sloe gin unless I order it. I'm probably not gonna get it any time soon. But this was very fun to watch. I like the idea of substituting and adding and changing to make riffs. Now I wanna experiment with some of my liqueurs as well and make some cocktails.

Watching this (great job, as always) made me wonder: what if you made a buck with gin (or another spirit), lime juice, ginger ale/beer, and floated the sloe gin, a bit like an El Diablo. I may try this out, but I see what you mean about things like this inspiring new cocktail ideas! Excellent work!

I love making Ramos Gin Fizz, so these variations with Sloe Gin seem like a lot of fun. Maybe a Sloe Campari Ramos Fizz?
