    Dr Nolan was Houses chance for redemption, an intellectual match and also a true friend. Was kind of pissed House walked out on him and gave up.

    • @victorpradha9946
      @victorpradha9946 2 года назад +387

      House gives up on everyone, because he's mired in a form of self-loathing. Why? Because House realizes that his own arrogance and stubbornness has condemned him to a life of physical agony that has hardened him and made him acerbic and cynical and bitter to the point that he alienates anyone who might give a d@mn about him. House can't/won't stop himself because so long as he's angry...he won't want to kill himself. And in the episode leading up to the series finale, we learn that House has been suicidal all along. It's what House says to Taub. That's why Kutner's suicide impacts House so much. And that's why House HATES IT that Wilson has just decided to throw his hands up and resign himself to his fate. THAT frightens House...as he too might just want to take that exit.
      House is embittered because his childhood father (not his bio-dad) is a hard, cold, demanding man and because his mother took on many lovers during his father's military driven absences from home. When he realized that he was the product of one of these infidelities it mired House in a feeling that his entire life is a lie and that he is steeped in deception. This makes House jaded. House's deductive brilliance and exceptional intelligence and insights makes him suffer no fools, no pretense, no false politeness and social niceties. When he met and fell in love with Stacey, House hoped that this was a way for him to emerge from his self-isolation. Yet House's stubbornness resulted in him insisting in NO amputation which left his leg maimed and mutilated and the source of his constant pain as he refused the medically prescribed surgical outcome for an infarction in his leg. Stacey carried the guilt of making an emotional decision to oblige House instead of following medical advice. That caused her to leave HIM. House was left to feel her declared love for him was a lie. This cut House off from everyone as he once again embraced the notion that ALL of life is an exercise in deception and that everyone is caked in layers of dishonesty. Cuddy was another brief respite from this level of distrust in humanity, but once again...this time because of House's addiction...House abandoned his hope of emerging from his self-constructed hovel of despair and cynicism.
      Of course House would dismiss Dr. Nolan...mostly because Nolan challenged House on why he's chosen to live life the way he does. House doesn't like to be made to answer for himself.

      @@victorpradha9946 Dr. Nolan promised House HAPPINESS. All of the advice he gave was supposedly in pursuit of that, and yet that didn't occur when House took up cooking or whatever hobby. No matter how much you write it does not change that. That is the fundamental scam of therapy. It promises happiness and constantly shifts the goalposts as the psychologist seeks to make you fit in more with society. You don't become happy, others just think you are.
      That's why House walked away. He does not care about what other people think of him and he refuses to compromise on that core principle. And therapy's goal is to make you fit in with society.

    • @victorpradha9946
      @victorpradha9946 2 года назад +52

      @@jjmarr7130 I feel Dr. Nolan promised House not happiness, but a chance for him to overcome his sense of powerlessness over his own torment which was a combination of: 1) his own sense of stupidity for his stubbornness in insisting on keep his leg (which relegated him to lifelong agony); 2) his guilt over (or rather feeling that he was somehow the factual reason that Amber was on that bus that led to) Amber's death; 3) his utter cluelessness over Kutner's suicidality (is House losing his gift of lucid observation, exceptional perceptiveness, and keen deductive reasoning?); and 4) his frayed relations (caused by his unwillingness to truly connect with another person (save for Wilson)). House hallucinates a tryst with Cuddy which could become something, but which he himself self-sabotages (in his hallucination). It's an admission of his failings. Dr. Nolan shows House that it's okay to see, appreciate, fully accept and permit failure, powerlessness, ineffectiveness and realize that sometimes you just have to let things/people come into your life and let them leave without feeling that it diminishes you in anyway. And this is the key to House's addiction issues too.
      In the psychiatric hospital, House connects with and develops feelings for Lydia (the sister in law of Annie the catatonic patient). Despite the genuine feelings between her and House, Lydia chooses to stay with her husband (Annie's brother). Dr. Nolan knew that House was getting close with Lydia. This too was a lesson for House in letting go. Dr. Nolan brings House to see his terminally ill father and gets House to give a 2nd opinion, knowing full well what the answer would be. This was Nolan showing House how to accept of loss, to know that there is NOTHING you can do, to affirm your own powerlessness and to grieve.
      Dr. Nolan was not promising House happiness. Happiness is always situational. It's dependent on circumstances and wish fulfillment. No...Dr. Nolan wanted House to learn that he can feel the full sting of being unable to have saved Amber, or Kutner or spare Wilson the grief of losing Amber, or to desire Lydia and not be able to have her...and know that he can still be Gregory House...the brilliant, gifted Dr. who saves those who other doctors can't. Dr. Nolan only showed House how to let his fear be out in the open and let it have its day...even the fear, the absolute dread that his leg pain will ALWAYS be there and to accept that there may be NOTHING that can stop that...including the Vicodin!
      Now IRL only the truly unprofessional, weak-minded therapists will tell you that they are offering you the keys to "happiness". Real therapy is about learning coping mechanisms to allow for the fact that life will sometimes NOT go our way, sometime in very grave and painful, utterly sorrowful ways but that we can still live our lives and be open to new experiences even if some of those bring disappointment, or hurt.

    Funny how Dr. Nolan thought that House might be attracted to the Patient, Sidney. Even though House has met his fair share of attractive people, all House cares about is the puzzle. Small depth into House’s obsessive methodology, and great how Nolan and House, both medical professionals look at a case.

    I wonder if Wilson wouldn't have better been a psychiatrist. The empathetic, kind doctor wo cares about everyone, especially his best buddy's mental condition deteriorating because of his addiction.
    Would have been interesting for him sometimes to get in the team to analyse the psychological condition of the team's patients in order to find more symptoms in order to treat them.

    • @judigemini178
      @judigemini178 Год назад +4

      Yeah, and maybe his own mental health would be better and he may not need to be on antidepressants, he may even be more emotionally intelligent and less of a pushover. Not that being in that profession automatically makes you gain those things, there's plenty of dysfunctional people in that field, but i think in his case it would suit him hence it's more likely he'd attain the benefits based on his personality & level of intelligence. I can't remember if the show ever touched on it but I wonder why he became an oncologist..
