I have been doing this for decades, except I only trim 1/4". That information comes from an old Sunset pillow book. That book shows how to cut continuous binding as well. It is by far the best pillow book out there. I'm really glad you showed this tip. So many new sewers don't know this. I think the bigger the pillow the more you can trim. I'm using 16 x 24 pillow inserts and plan on tapering 1/4". But the next time I do an 18 x 18 or larger I will try the 1/2 " trim.
Thank you for the tip to eliminate the Dunce Cap Pointed Ends on my pillow. It was my first 18"x18" pillow. I found that I like the Down Alternative Microfiber pillow inserts a little better than the Poly Filled inserts. Now that I see your solution it makes perfect sense. Thanks.
@@superfly3990 Did you use my technique? It sure should have worked..... Are they adequately 'stuffed'? Depending on the fabric, and edge treatment, you may need to 'stuff out' the corners with additional stuffing.
@@londasews I will be giving your technique a try today. While I was studying my pillow with the Ugly Corners I was thinking about giving the middle sections "Love Handles." Sort of the opposite of your "Corner Tuck" technique. As soon as I saw your solution, and the other tips "Tight Sizing" I knew immediately that you had figured it out. Thank you so much ! I'll let you know how I did.
I tried your corner technique on my 18" pillow this morning. I'm so pleased. Your dimensions for the "corner tuck" are excellent ! Thank You ! I'm now a Subscriber too.
Thanks for the tip. I didn't know dog-ears were a thing until i saw this. thinking about it i don't mind them - in fact i think they make a cushion look jolly and characterful.
Awesome tip about sewing the corner of the opening. I had done square pillow patterns years ago for the non-dog ear corners but didn’t remember the measurement to do it on my current rectangular pillows. I assume your instructions will work for both shapes.
Glad it helped you - and you found me. I hope you subscribed. Sometime in the next 6 weeks I plan to tape more videos. I'm open to suggestions for videos.
This is an excellent video! One of my viewers asked about this and I sent her a link for your instructions since I haven't made a tutorial on dog ears myself. I happen to sew tapered corners the same way although I don't always cut to actual pillow measurements. Good work, Londa! Sincerely, Peg
Hi Londa, Now that you've made me aware of them, I want to make every effort to avoid pointy pillow corners. That being said, can your corner tapering technique be used in combination with a zipper? If so, what advice do you have for obtaining a good result?
I would be SURE to not have the zipper come anywhere close to the corner, regardless. Instead, I add width to the back of a pillow in the center of the back (or close to an edge - up to you), then insert a zipper with a lapped application. I just looked at one of mine, and it has a 1" overlap over the zipper. Wish I could attach a picture, but don't see that is possible. Contact me through my website www.londas-sewing.com and I'll be happy to share it with your privately.
Thank you! This is an excellent explanation and demonstration. No need for me to buy a pillow template. Can you use this same formula for a 12x21 pillow? Fold into fourths accurately and measure in 1/2 inch at corner and cut?
This is an excellent explanation. ALSO Do you have a video where you add a zipper into the pillow fabric so I can remove the cover to be dry cleaned? I prefer your ability to teach techniques.
Thanks much for those kind words. I do not have a video on that, but I have followed some here in YT myself. Right now I have a list of new videos to do, but no time and I've lost my microphone and person for behind the camera... ;(
This is a great technique but I'm wondering if you want to put a zipper at bottom seam, how would you attach since the seam line isn't straight? Thanks for taking the time to show this technique!
Thanks for the comment and question...I would NOT put a zipper in any of the sides of a pillow, but rather in a lapped application in the back of the pillow. I think that would be far, far preferable.
Easiest: I would do the change as shown, then just ignore that you did so OR split the backside towards one end, add seam allowances, insert zipper, then do the change as shown.
A Facebook group member sent me here, glad they did! Thank you for the easy explanation. What about pillows with a border, which have the corners reduced? Thanks in advance. #mensewtoo
I think I know what you mean - the square cut out of the border ar the corners to provide for the mitered corner? If that's it - honestly - unless there is a SEAM at the outermost edge of the pillow, you can't do anything the way I imagine it. Send me a picture - londa@londas-sewing.com

@@londasews I found some nice fabric and made pillow yesterday. I was so excited and then saw the Ugly corners. I was so disappointed.

Hi Londa, thanks for your prompt response and for the advice about the lapped zipper. I'll give that a whirl!
Thank you for this video . I was searching for a long time

for sure - any corner in a puffed 'anything' that you want to look square and not pointed is my opinion. Thanks for writing.
this is fantastic - really well done- so clear what to do. thanks Londa.

Thank you. Now I know how to sew a cushion cover without dog ears.
Great explanation and easy to follow - thank you.

dog ears 😂, thank you for solution.
How do you treat that edge when adding an invisible zipper?
Easiest: I would do the change as shown, then just ignore that you did so OR split the backside towards one end, add seam allowances, insert zipper, then do the change as shown.

Why would a grown woman call a cushion loosey goosey? We are not children.
I just try to use lingo that is meaningful and descriptive. I do hope you learned some tips if you watched though. Thanks for writing.
