The Best Photoshop Feature You Didn’t Know Existed

  • Back in 2014, I talked to the Photoshop team about adding freeform distortions, in which you drag points around to get an image exactly the way you want it. I diagrammed it up for them and everything! Five years later, Photoshop actually added this feature! But I guess Adobe didn’t like it as much as I did because they never promoted it. What you’re about to see may be the best feature you didn’t even know existed.

Yay! The GOAT, and great to find your channel here, Deke. Watched your tutorials years ago on Lynda, and learned so many precious PS techniques. Subbed. 🎉

Many thanks for another excellent video! Do you know if it's possible to add different stroke presets to Photoshop (like a double line stroke)? One can modify the existing presets and save the changes, but I can't find any way to add a completely new preset.

If you’re stroking a vector-based path, you can click More Options, dial in some settings, and click the Save button. You can also stroke a path outline with a custom brush, which might get you the effect you’re looking for. Beyond that, you’re starting to get into Illustrator territory.

Maybe I missed it Deke, but did you tell people how to access this feature? As far as I know it's a part of "Warp" functionality, yes? Anyone remember Barco Creator? 🤣

amazing content as usual Deke! I know you often lament the windows versions sticking the dialog boxes for things like active transformations (around 13:50) and I agree with the frustration but the upside is, users can use autohotkey or some other accessibility means to programmatically toggle lock and or individual parameters outside of scripting (because its usually unavailable inside of 'blocking' states like transformation). I really hope they don't try and shovel QT into photoshop or that will be very limiting on the windows side unless they can manage to expose UI settings to COM or js/jsx/cep/uxp with some magic.

I readily admit, it’s a feature as much as a curse. It’s even possible I overtrain by mentioning stuff that many if not most people know to watch out for. I’m constantly hopping back and forth between platforms, so it snags me.

Lovely feature indeed! but for some reason it doesn´t work for me as it does for you. I am not able to chance the color of the guides. They stay white no matter what I do. But the most annoying part is that when I try to select more than 1 anger point, photoshop crashes. I am on a Mac M1 Pro.

The best thing to do in a situation like this is reset the preferences. Press Ctrl-K (Cmd-K on the Mac), click Reset Preferences on Quit, quit Photoshop, and then start it back up again. Hope this helps!
