Oh man, I love this tune. Americana-blues piano, and another great melody. "I was born and raised and lived and loved and died, today." What a great opening line.
Wow, there's something really lovely about this. One can only wonder what would have come of it if they'd seen it through. At moments it feels like Any world that I'm welcome to - as if it's coming from a similar place emotionally. Great piano, as usual...
Hearing these amazing outtakes reminds me of some of the jamming sessions of the Beatles. Some of their jamming sessions were so inspired that they recorded them on 1 or 2 takes. Their harmonies, though tight and logical, easy to listen to and follow, were not as stacked, that is, having various layers of tonality, tone color diversity extraordinaire, nuance of chord progression variation from normal parameters, as SD. I'm a fan of both legendary collaborations.
If you want to hear an outstanding instrumental version of this tune, check out Megashine City by Drew Zingg from his solo album released in 2012. As Dan-heads will know, he played with the band in their early 90s tour dates, many of which made it onto Alive in Amerca. He's another superb guitarist in a long line of quality Steely Dan players and it's a great album. The cover of this track is a real treat.
Damn, this is the first time I've heard this, and I already think it ranks up with some of their best stuff. I do like Gaucho, but really, that album could have used a more rootsy song like this to balance out the rest of the record's interminable 80's slickness. Imagine this demo with a tight drum track and some horns and guitar, and you can already hear the party coming back to life! It's also fascinating to hear the Fagen/Becker creative process at work , how they start out their songs...
Your all fools to argue the merits of Beatles vs. The Dan. I love them both, and keep in mind The Beatles were nearly 10 years Don & Walts seniors. SD had the luck of being raised so close to the early 60's jazz... I'lll take a guess and say most of you ain't from Brooklyn, we had music people from other parts of the world could only dream of...... Parkers Band Baby!
Yep...Parker's band. Hahaha.... Man alive! I would have loved to see that cat swing once, but I am lucky enough to have seen Steely Dan four times in my life.
I love the dead sound of these. Makes you feel like you're hearing it out of some old mono phonograph. This is different quality that my copies, whered you find this?
Well just to let you know the beatles was one of Walter Becker and Donald Fagans influences as well as Bob Dylan. Anyways where can do you get this music from how can I obtain a copy
I wonder if they broke this song down into fragments and created a new cut altogether for Gaucho. There oddly familiar in sound @ certain points...Anyone who has seen how Josie came about would understand me.
It's been a while since I read the dan biography and I don't have my copy right now, but is the song they scrapped because Donald said it was too hard to sing?
A true Steely Dan fan doesn't really care about The Beatles all that much-to us Danatics Steely is the beginning and end all band.Becker and Fagen to me are just way smarter and hipper than Lennon/McCartney.I totally respect them and understand what they did for pop music but Becker/Fagen are the greatest American duo ever in my opinion.SD is the best ever period.
I have to agree with you. I was a deejay for almost 20 years and discovered quiet well every popsong ever made between 1960 and 2012 The Dan is superior to every other band.
Erik Geurten You are a very smart man-that means a lot coming from somebody with your experience and knowledge of pop music, and music in general.Pop music has become a complete joke since about 1985/86 in my opinion.
It's not really necessary to make comparisons to other composers simply because their inspirations/ influences comes from different sources. That being said, I put Fagen & Becker on that short list of composers (Rogers & Hart, Bacharach & David, Lennon & McCartney etc;) who's compositions have not only stood the test of time but seem to have an 'inner' energy and life that sustains itself that keeps them fresh. Their compositions (Fagen & Becker) if left unheard for awhile sound new again when heard anew. Quite remarkable for popular composers.
@atty1chgo No sorry, I'm just not a 'Beatles are better than sliced bread' Kool-Aid drinker like you. Yes, they were pioneers and wrote some great lyrics, but musically they were like children compared to the depth of the SD duo's talents. Not talking about who influenced whom. Talking about talent. You don't teach that and you don't learn that.
it is musically illegal to compare steely dan to those illiterate beatles and their boring nursery rhymes that do not rhyme and gats no riddims or dim riddims
Oh man, I love this tune.
Americana-blues piano, and another great melody.
"I was born and raised and lived and loved and died, today."
What a great opening line.
The bass on this amazing....
Thanks for the treat. All Steely Dan is great Steely Dan.

There's no question that this should have been kept In the GOUCHO album

I’m actually hearing a bit of Security Joan in this one.
My mind was blown today, heard an even earlier demo of this track from the CBAT era.

They really forgot to put one of the records out for their double album gaucho

If you want to hear this demo with a tight drum track etc., check out "Megashine City," which has a few things in common with this song.

thank you!
AWESOME!
I wish they performed this song on the album.
Well stated...
Some of those notes reminds me of Kulee Baba.
@deBierce01 Correct. Most people on You Tube are not from Brooklyn.
Well done.
a little too good to be a throwaway
Cocky but... I liked your comment, bro.
"Musically ilegal" ---> really good.
Hi, How did you get your hands on this jem, great job....Ken
I love the dead sound of these. Makes you feel like you're hearing it out of some old mono phonograph. This is different quality that my copies, whered you find this?
@deBierce01 They brought that new saxaphone sensatioooooooon
Demo version. Sounds like the intro to "Time out of mind" with some truly Fagenesque chord changes.
@steelydanf1fan96
This is from the Gaucho outtakes I believe.
in response to wobrian3, it should be "halfway thru the gate where you will SLIP inside"....ok?......kool song!
@mordanai
Yes, it does get thick here, doesn't it?
Well just to let you know the beatles was one of Walter Becker and Donald Fagans influences as well as Bob Dylan. Anyways where can do you get this music from how can I obtain a copy
sounded like Kulee Baba at the beginning
@sabueso32
That is exactly what I hear too!! Not Gaucho, but a great song nonetheless.
I wonder if they broke this song down into fragments and created a new cut altogether for Gaucho. There oddly familiar in sound @ certain points...Anyone who has seen how Josie came about would understand me.
@mordanai indeed
It's been a while since I read the dan biography and I don't have my copy right now, but is the song they scrapped because Donald said it was too hard to sing?
Sounds more on the Pretzel Logic style. As levanyzzuf said, this doesnt seem to belong to Gaucho's style. I agree, but... who knows with Fagen :-)

Not true, I'm a true fan and have been since the beginning but also love The Beatles, it's like comparing apples and oranges.

i have never bought a beatles record
Sentimental and perhaps a bit defensive.
John Cone
melgorm come back
Can these guys make anything that is not remotely incredible ?
No

Amen! Beatles = the most overrated band in rock history. Musical children compared to the sophistication, depth and layering of SD.
