I don’t have Americolor and was not able to get it on Amazon due to it being out of stock , I used the sunnys bakery brand.?.? Something like that. It has pink wrapping. But mine didn’t turn out as black as yours. Will it still work? Also will it still get darker over night? Ps. You are a fantastic baker and you are gorgeous! I’m a huge fan!!!!!
Hi Chelsweets, I have a question. How much of buttercream frosting would it be at the end? I want to smooth the frosting on a cake (26cm and about 5cm high), would it be enough or should I make more? Thank you for the answer!
If I have pre-made buttercream, from my local baking supply store, can I add the coco to make it super black or should I just add A LOT of black coloring?
Hi Chelsweets. Can you tell me how many cupcakes this will frost? I'd like to do 3 dozen for work on Halloween but I'm not sure this would be enough to frost them all. Thank you.
I definitely need to do that next! but I did just share a blog post that talks about how to get bright red buttercream!! here's the link: chelsweets.com/2019/02/09/how-to-make-bright-red-buttercream-frosting/
To keep true buttercream flavor just add your gel stir it up and microwave it 30 sec stir and let sit for about 30 min to stiffen back up and stir if not black enough repeat
hi plz answer! when you say 'let it sit overnight' how should i do that? do i freeze it or just wrap it in saran wrap or what? haha thx. i'm planning a halloween party and black frosting would be great! x
definitely cover with saran wrap (place directly onto frosting), as this is a crusting buttercream! If i plan to use it early the next morning, i let it sit on the counter, if I plan to use it late the next day or in a couple days, I will place it in the fridge! It takes several hours to come to room temperature, so just be sure you have enough time to let it warm back up before you need to use it! And be sure to give it a good stir before frosting the following day
If you can find powder color the color is very intense....I always use powder for black and red.....I'm new to your channel but enjoying it very much.....Laurie
You can do either. If you plan to use it first thing in the morning, leave it out! If not, keep it in the fridge, and remove it a few hours before you need to use it. Give it a good stir before using to ensure you smooth out any air bubbles that can form during the temperature change.
Hi! It looks like you’re using 32oz of powdered sugar for the frosting but I remember u saying it was 8 cups. Isn’t 32 Oz 4 cups?? Please advise bc I got my measurements wrong when I made my first batch of buttercream. Thanks!
You can do either! If I'm decorating a cake early the next day, i usually cover the frosting and leave it out overnight! But if you make it further in advance you can put it in the fridge!
I have used black cocoa powder in my black buttercream. The color turned out nice. Of course it was a bit bitter, but...Anyone else noticed a slight smell? Or perhaps is the black cocoa I purchased. 🤔
I cannot find black cocoa, I am going to try dark cocoa with activated charcoil, I have baked with these before for a oreo cake and it worked well in the cake layers. It's probably the same
This will in fact back your frosting bitter and choc tasting. Will not keep traditional buttercream flavor. Just add your gel coloring and microwave and 15 sec stir and more drops if needed let sit and come to room temp and stir. Repeat if needing deeper color. No need for extra spending or having bad tasting buttercream to achieve black frosting
Different butters have different amounts of salt, so it's hard to make sure the frosting has the right amount of salt if you use salted butter. That's why most recipes call for unsalted butter!
Will it be too chocolatly if I’m frosting a chocolate cake? My son wants chocolate on chocolate and I’m trying to get him to budge on the bread but he won’t 😩
The problem with this and in some states it is now illegal, is the fact that activated charcoal absorbs a lot of things within the system, so for those that are on medication, if they have taken medication within 2 hours of eating something with activated charcoal, it makes that medication ineffective and as if the person never took it in the first place. This could be potential for disaster. I use it for myself, but if I'm making a cake for other folks, I never use charcoal because of this issue.
I followed your recipe and doubled up. It didn't come out anything like yours consistency wise. Also you mentioned putting dark chocolate in on your recipe but not in the video?
haha not black!!! This only uses a tiny bit of gel food coloring, so it's not quite as extreme as you'd think! However, it can make things a little more colorful than normal :P
I've never seen black cocoa before! I'm sure it tastes way better than the food coloring does. Thanks for the tips!
it definitely does :)
If you want bitter frosting yes
Omg this buttercream taste SOOOOOO GOOD!!!! And looks real black. Thanks for sharing.
So happy to hear that!! :)
I love your videos. They are really helpful. Thank you for sharing so freely what you've learned and mastered.
If you don't want the chocolate flavor, color it brown first with americolor brown , then add black!!
I'm going to try this hope it works!
We tried it and it didn't work for us but we only had the smallest bottles of brown and super black so maybe if we had more.
@@realitynineteen I've always used Wilton gel paste, and they work perfectly! 😊
Great tutorial. I like that your mixing bowl is glass; and, I also like the spatula, because it looks like a mitten, so cute.
thanks :)
Muchas muchas gracias por este tutorial, ha sido magnifico y de gran ayuda.👍🏻👍🏻
I always wanted to know the black buttercream... Thank you
Love the way you did the teeth test :D
This looks good does it tast any different then buttercream ?
Hi! Do you have a tutorial for red frosting? TIA
Thanks Chelsea 💯🍫🍰🎃I would like to see a Frankenstein tortorial green buttercream
Pro trick: watch movies on Flixzone. Been using it for watching a lot of movies recently.

@Jesiah Nickolas yup, been using Flixzone} for years myself :)
Hello! Can I possibly make it ahead of time and freeze it?
do you put it in the refrigerator while you rest it overnight?
I needed to know the same thing
i just made this today and it wasn't as black as yours. hopefully it would turn black tomorrow. any tips if it's still not that black tomorrow?
Fab Chelsea, but I cannot get this for black cocoa powder for Love nor money in the UK. Is yours the black onyx powder?
Hi Chelsweets, I have a question. How much of buttercream frosting would it be at the end? I want to smooth the frosting on a cake (26cm and about 5cm high), would it be enough or should I make more? Thank you for the answer!
Would you do this same technique for navy blue frosting?
Do I let the buttercream sit overnight in the refeigirator or on the counter?
i like your Halloween cup cake video 💀👻🎃
You're amazing and a joy to watch!!
You're too sweet!
Where do you find the black gel? I've looked and never seen any in the stores I go to.
When you say sit overnight... is it on kitchen counter or in the refrigerator
If I have pre-made buttercream, from my local baking supply store, can I add the coco to make it super black or should I just add A LOT of black coloring?
you should be able to add the black cocoa to that!
Chelsweets Bakery awesome! Thanks!!
I don’t have Ameri black food colourings I have rainbow dust black progel can that work to thank u
Hi Chelsweets. Can you tell me how many cupcakes this will frost? I'd like to do 3 dozen for work on Halloween but I'm not sure this would be enough to frost them all. Thank you.
1 batch of buttercream frosts about 24, but it depends on how you're frosting them / how big of a swirl you're making!
My made that receipe but my buttercream came out really thin defently a different consistency than what you have idk what I did wrong
This is great! Can you do a tutorial on shades of red/burgundy buttercream?
I definitely need to do that next! but I did just share a blog post that talks about how to get bright red buttercream!! here's the link: chelsweets.com/2019/02/09/how-to-make-bright-red-buttercream-frosting/
Hi can i use hersheys dark chocolate cocoa powder as well?
Hi Chelsea! Thanks for the tutorial. Just curious, does this frosting turn your teeth black when you eat it?
If you watch to the end of the tutorial, i do a teeth test with the frosting :)
So would the cocoa make this a chocolate frosting ?
How intense is the chocolate flavoring from the dark cocoa power? I need a true black buttercream but dont want chocolate buttercream. Thanks
it's very chocolaty!! :/
Chelsweets ok thank you!
To keep true buttercream flavor just add your gel stir it up and microwave it 30 sec stir and let sit for about 30 min to stiffen back up and stir if not black enough repeat
Awesome! It looks so delicious! 🎃🎃🎃🎃👍👍
Do I need to left frosting overnight in fridge ?
hi plz answer! when you say 'let it sit overnight' how should i do that? do i freeze it or just wrap it in saran wrap or what? haha thx. i'm planning a halloween party and black frosting would be great! x

How do u store u buttercream over night ?
Where can I buy black cocoa powder?
If you can find powder color the color is very intense....I always use powder for black and red.....I'm new to your channel but enjoying it very much.....Laurie
How do you store it overnight? Do you leave it in the bowl and at room temperature or put it in the refrigerator?

Chelsweets Bakery thank you so much!
You say to let it set overnight to darken, is that at room temp or do you refrigerate it??
either works!
Thanks for all the tips !
If you can’t get black cocoa can you use regular brown cocoa and get the same results?
You def can, it just may require a touch more food coloring
Just wanted to know that adding black cocoa powder doesn't it change the taste of the buttercream if I want to have a black vanilla buttercream?
Yes, it will taste like chocolate and a bit bitter.
It makes your buttercream very bitter and not tasty. Just color buttercream and microwave 30 sec stir and let sit for 30 mins to stiffen back up
The recipe on your page says to also add melted chocolate?
Hi! It looks like you’re using 32oz of powdered sugar for the frosting but I remember u saying it was 8 cups. Isn’t 32 Oz 4 cups?? Please advise bc I got my measurements wrong when I made my first batch of buttercream. Thanks!
This bag is 2lbs, and contains about 8 cups of powdered sugar! The ratio should always be 2 cups of powdered sugar to 1 stick (or 1/2 cup) of butter
Chelsweets Bakery thanks so much!
I just want to know how she got a hot pink Kitchenaid mixer!
Hi, how long can remaining buttercream frosting be stored in the fridge for?
a couple months, if stored in an airtight container!
How to do you make red ? So it doesnt have a bitter taste ?
Hey...do u let it stay out at room temperature or do u refrigerate it overnight
You can do either! If I'm decorating a cake early the next day, i usually cover the frosting and leave it out overnight! But if you make it further in advance you can put it in the fridge!
Chelsweets Bakery thank u
I have used black cocoa powder in my black buttercream. The color turned out nice. Of course it was a bit bitter, but...Anyone else noticed a slight smell? Or perhaps is the black cocoa I purchased. 🤔
Does it give it a Chocolate taste?!
How would I do this for Italian Meringue buttercream?
I believe you can just add in the black cocoa to Italian meringue buttercream one it's mixed!
What brand coloring gel do you use?
always americolor! :)
The sugar need to be sifted?
Weights for black buttercream in ounces or grams please
Love your video
My frosting completely broke 16 cups of it. I have no idea how to fix it :/
Just microwave the buttercream, it makes it super black and no need for added cocoa powder and letting it sit :)
No not so black
I cannot find black cocoa, I am going to try dark cocoa with activated charcoil, I have baked with these before for a oreo cake and it worked well in the cake layers. It's probably the same
Yah, that sounds like it should work just the same!!
Would the activated charcoal change the taste?
Made this twice back to back followed the direction to the letter can out dark gray both times I’m so discussed
This will in fact back your frosting bitter and choc tasting. Will not keep traditional buttercream flavor. Just add your gel coloring and microwave and 15 sec stir and more drops if needed let sit and come to room temp and stir. Repeat if needing deeper color. I’m here because I’m thinking about making a hey bear baby sensory cake and Pinterest showed me a lot of people use black buttercream
Seriously Watkins has the best vanilla ❤
Can we please have the ingredient weights in grams or ounce please .
Why does my black gel colour turn green ? 😕
But does it taste bad? Alot of deep colored frosting doesn't actually taste good
The whole point of this video is that it doesn't use a ton of food coloring, and it tastes like chocolate
Will it be too chocolatly if I’m frosting a chocolate cake? My son wants chocolate on chocolate and I’m trying to get him to budge on the bread but he won’t 😩
not at all! I think it would be great with chocolate cake :)
I made it but my son wanted it more chocolatly so I added less than 1/2 a cup more of the cocoa😩 how do I balance it out again. I think it’s too much
So what if someone doesn't want cocoa or chocolate in their black buttercream?
Then you have to add loads of gel food coloring to get a deep shade :/
If you dont want chocolate frosting you can just use activated charcoal
aw that's a great tip! what does that do to the flavor though?? I've never tasted charcoal frosting!
Chelsweets it has no flavor at all
The problem with this and in some states it is now illegal, is the fact that activated charcoal absorbs a lot of things within the system, so for those that are on medication, if they have taken medication within 2 hours of eating something with activated charcoal, it makes that medication ineffective and as if the person never took it in the first place. My buttercream looks gray not black. 😞
I followed your recipe and doubled up. It didn't come out anything like yours consistency wise. Also you mentioned putting dark chocolate in on your recipe but not in the video?
I like her
But do it make yo poop black tho? Answer: yes. Eww. 🙊🙈
haha not black!!! This only uses a tiny bit of gel food coloring, so it's not quite as extreme as you'd think! However, it can make things a little more colorful than normal :P
I'm cracking up. Good to know. Thanks!
haha gotta tell it like it is! :P
When you say let it sit overnight. Do you let it sit in the bowl on the counter or in the refrigerator?
