  • The MA200s are a series of EMUs built between 1997 and 1999 to serve on Line A of the Rome metro. With the arrival of the CAF S/300 cars in the early 2000s, the MA200s were moved to the Rome-Lido railway, where they still run today. Recurring reliability issues with these cars have led to them rarely running in service. This video is a rare look at a set of MA200s running. Enjoy!

    As a person who has been traveling on the Roma-Lido line multiple times a day for the last 8 years I can tell you that, if you see these in service, it means that they haven’t done any maintenance in the last decade and now that the service is in Astral’s hand (it has been Atac for the last 20 years) and they have to deal with a very difficult situation.
    If you can, look for different solutions instead than taking Roma-Lido, if you do, be prepared for heat, full carriages and people passing out. I recommend you bring a water bottle and some sugar with you just in case.
    Good luck to you all, and please complain to the authorities, if more people speak up we have a chance of getting back a service that is worth of the title “train line” for the capital of Italy, right now this is only a nightmare on trails.

    I remember riding these 12 years ago when my dad and I went to Rome. They were as graffiti covered then as they are now. 😐

      That would rarely if ever happen in the U.K. where trespass on railway property is simply not tolerated. Rolling stock is carefully monitored

    Oh hell yeah, the Rome Metro! One of the most underrated systems of all time! I was lucky to ride one of the MB200s on line B back in 2017.

    Neat video! I took the Rome Metro a few years ago. Good thing I did some research first since these cars looked creepy and disgusting with the graffiti.
    The newer cars are great and I liked the gangway style! Small system but convenient for most touristy stuff!

    The main source of issues for the MA200 series can be summarized as ATAC's atrocious and shameful lack of maintainance.
    MA200s are in reality very good trains, but their only (and main) downside is that being the first trains fitted with several new technologies, they're quite delicate and as such they understandably need a small amount of regular maintainance, something that obviously isn't done by ATAC, not even the simplest of things, such as a once-in-a-while cleaning of the doors' guide rails, something that would flush out maybe half of the daily issues these trains go trough.
    Other common issues for these trains are faulty converters, wich means some (if not most trains) only run with one or maybe two converters working on the whole train, meaning a several-folds decreased accelleration, a very well-worn-out and unloaded air suspension cushions (giving that bouncy ride on equally abysmally-maintained Roma-Lido line tracks), various electrical issues to the control microprocessor (in most cases just a re-calibration of some parameters would be needed to fix most problems), disk brakes (a few years ago ATAC bought the wrong replacement parts for 2-3x times the normal price!) and air-conditioning units, again due to the lack of maintainance most of them barely work, this is mostly due to the dirt-clogged filters that haven't been cleaned in a decade (again, just a simple cleaning of the filters would do wonders!).
    Finally, one serious issue is also with the crews, as most of the ones that have been hired by ATAC in recent years have recieved an abysmal training and cannot be bothered to follow the simplest of regulations, as demonstrated at 4:20 in the video. Given that in Italy all subway trains are one-man-operated, after closing the doors, you're supposed to peek at the rear-view-mirrors and check that all doors have been properly closed before taking power. The one in the video is an absolutely common case of someone just pressing the "close doors" button, waiting a few seconds (without even checking the mirrors nor even the door interlock light) and then slamming the master controller in full power, expecting the train to take off normally.
    If a door malfunction happens, the driver will likely fiddle several times with the controller before opening the doors, closing them again and slamming the master controller in full power once more. This loop will likely repeat for 3-4 times before the idiot in the cab realizes that a door has malfunctioned and will finally (with plenty of calm) get up from it's seat and go check it.
    This of course causes a delay amount 2 to 3 times higher than necessary (something that competent drivers take one minutes to fix is done in five minutes by someone else), and this is not only common on the Roma-Lido Line, but on Rome's proper subway lines as well as in many other subway networks in Italy, including Naples and Milano.
    Unfortunately, as i said, the MA200s are really good trains, comfortable and fast, but under ATAC's ownership they've suffered (and are still suffering) a lot, not only from graffiti and dirt (another thing that is quick and easy to fix, but ATAC obviously can't be bothered to), but from a vicious and precocious wear and tear and damage, wich makes them appear far older than they are in reality (most trains are barely 20 years old!).
    On my channel i do have a digitalized VHS of a MA200 cab ride from the early '2000s, when they still were in service on Line A, under ATAC's predecessor - Met.Ro.
    Graffiti was already a problem back then, but alteast there was a decent amount of maintainance done!

      As a roman I can tell you that all these problems are related to the fact that ATAC does not have the funds to repair the trains and the maintenance the lines because most of the people use the bus but don't pay the ticket (it costs €1,50, if the controller finds out you don't have the ticket you'll get a 200€ fine). Also the stations need maintenance, all the metro stations have escalators but about 60 of these don't work. Almost all the trains in Rome's metro shouldn't circulate because the last revision of every train was about 5 years ago (the train would be considered unsafe) and to revise a single train it takes at least 3 months. In January ATAC bought from CAF 10/20 new trains for the Rome-Lido, lines A and B to get prepared for the 2025 Jubilee. The trains should be delivered by 2024.

      I recall the new operator was required by some government agency to give more training to the drivers and IIRC they had to shut down the line for a few days some months ago because they didn't have enough competent drivers.

      @@wrglwrgl the escalator and elevator problem is also still related to the covid situation in China. It has been very hard to source parts from China and it's affecting everybody in every country.

    Rome seems to have the same thing in common with New York: a major graffiti problem ( and occasional door problems; yeah, we get those, too.)

    The MA200 seem to most likely be a variation of the Siemens Nexus line of trains as the MA200 has very similar doors and interiors compared to the Siemens Nexus trains in Melbourne that entered service in 2005 so the MA200s are most likely an older Siemens Nexus series generation! However the MA200 trains seem to have an older version of Siemens’s AC VF system.

    those trains made me think about our Finnish M200 Metros. They were made made in 2000-2001 by Bombardier to bring more capacity to then new Vuosaari branch, after 4 to 5 years of use, they were discovered to me highly unreliable due to bad door tech and bad traction motors. They are still in daily use but only 2 out of 12 units are usually used becouse rest of them are broken or being used as test train in the new expansion to Kivenlahti. The Finnish metro wanted to sell them to Germany in 2021 but they couldn´t becouse shortage of trains. They are supposed to be refurbished between 2022 and 2025 to make them last longer for the M400 stock to be made and constructed.

    Questi treni furono acquistati per il Giubileo del 2000 da impiegare sulla Linea A di Roma, ne vidi addirittura alcuni vagoni essere trasportati su appositi automezzi speciali sulla Via Pontina nel 1999.
    Fino al 2019 (ultimi anni in cui prendevo la Roma-Lido) venivano impiegati la Domenica o nei giorni di sciopero, senza aria condizionata e con livrea non più arancione ma come da video azzurra essendo una linea "mare". Il veicolo esteticamente sembra una via di mezzo tra i treni degli anni 70 ed i più moderni Caf come meccanica. Sono molto bassi internamente rispetto agli altri veicoli rotabili.

    These cars could really use a refurbishment. Maybe fix all the faulty problems. If that doesn't work, replace the fleet. I'm surprised they are still running, because I'm almost certain that they want to almost give up.

      I think that they are painted white on the sides to better manage metal expansion/contraction at different temperatures especially in summer

    They really need to clean up these train cars. That in no way makes the metro look cool or nice. It is like the NYC subway when I was a kid. At least when the trains get damaged like that in New York they are taken out of service and cleaned within 48 hours. This makes a train system look trashy. But then Europeans want to say our metro systems are ugly or whatever. They have no room to talk.

      Because it's all they have. The Lazio region (who owns the line) and the municipality of Rome (whose in-house company Atac operates the line) have been arguing for years over who has to pay for new trains, or for the maintenance of those already in service. The result is that no new trains have been ordered since 2009, and many of those can't even run because they are legally required to do some maintenance that no one has planned or paid for. This means that at the moment, for what is for all intents and purposes a 28 km long metro line, there are 3 (!) available trains, and frequencies that often exceed 30 minutes.
      It's an absurd situation: the line, that runs entirely inside the municipality of Rome should be handed to it and turned into a proper metro line: it could be interconnected with the Jonio branch of line B with some adjustments to the loading gauge.

      I just passed the area today. I think the area is just too big and unimportant to have enough surveillance. Also given that the neighbouring area looks like a dumpster and somewhat dangerous, I doubt there are too many "good people" who would call the police.

      Not AnsaldoBreda but FIAT Ferroviaria and Breda (Pistoia) the latter being AnsaldoBreda’s predecessor. Traction equipment is by Ansaldo.
