I've seen countless reaction videos of this, and you are the first one to pick up on the "do you think I want to do this, Violet?" line! It never ceases to amaze me how people missed this classic line that abusers use. They always try to frame it as "you MAKE me do this!!!". Hurts so bad.

Just because people dont react or mention it doesnt mean they didnt pick up on it lol. Its just not that new of a line, its common knowledge of abusive behaviour. Its like thinking people dont pick up the fact jenny was walking at night when he mentions it because no one reacts to it.

I'm a 54-year-old avowed metalhead who's seen some sh*t, but when I saw you turn around and your shoulders shake, my heart broke and I just started crying with you. People that have lived that life resonate like tuning forks with Ren's music because it's too real for us. He brings us back to those moments of panic and fear. But it's cathartic. And having someone like you to be our guide and help us filter it through your relatable perception and reception of those moments in the music that are so hard to see is invaluable. I appreciate you so much for helping us process those memories of past emotional turmoil and trauma. Thank you for helping us find Ren, and for being a beacon past the rocky reefs in our souls.

I really like the way you do your reactions, quietly taking in the song, adding text comments along the way, and then afterwards taking your time to collect your thoughts. Music that uses such writing strength to carry such heavy stories deserves that kind of attention.

My mother was the abuser. She is schizophrenic with bipolar disorder and would verbally and physically abuse me. My father was an alcoholic. When I was 14 she attacked my Dad with a knife. She spent 8 years in a mental hospital. I have 2 younger brothers who I raised until I turned 18 and moved out. I didn't continue the abuse to my children and they have had a wonderful childhood that I never had. I just want you to know that sharing your story makes moving past the trauma easier. I grew up in an alcoholic household and violence occasionally resulted. Though nothing like this, for some reason millions can relate and empathise with these song. It's understandable when you can relate to these more deeply that the subtle things can be missed first time around. Must be 50 times I've heard this and I still cry uncontrollably every time. I take comfort from that. We're all damaged and scared. This "big brain" of ours seems a curse sometimes aye. I hope there's some cathartic things you can find in this music too. Truly a wonderious and heartfelt reaction. Bravery is too weak a word to describe your incredible indescribable emotional endurance in dealing with the themes of this tale. To show all of us that we may dance in the dark through the horrors of our mind. Yet, the compassion and power we possess to push on allows us to step into the light of life and carry the rest of the rythmn in our hearts. Never stop dancing for it is what keeps this world turning even if we struggle getting used to the spin. The maternal monster that birthed me into this world was whom I had ran away from at 14 myself. I've been forced to do disgusting, degrading, and despicable things just to eat and get out of the cold but no matter the horrors I've endured I'll never go back. Eleven years has passed and alot of failed attempts to unalive myself made me understand the past will never be my legacy. That I will outlive that beast who birthed me. That it is not about the people who have hurt me that I carry on but I do so for the people I have yet to meet. I am lucky to have someone who is by my side now instead of in my face hurting me. Alot has changed in these years but that growth carries alot of scars that will never heal. Yet the more I try to forget why they are there the deeper it pains. I found peace comes not from forgetting but from remembering more than the pain. To remember that the biggest wave may crush us the hardest but it moves twice as fast. That I can create moments now that don't define what I've been through but where I've longed to be. Ren is a genius to create this community, these conversations, and connections with songs and passions beyond my abilities. Thank you again for your bravery in doing this reaction and know that while we all carry different stories we write them on the same page. Can't wait for the next reaction do be safe and know that you did an amazing job reacting but more importantly you are incredibly inspirational for all those who have survived a childhood that bled us dry for surviving through the misteps in the dark. Thank you for being here in this moment and I hope for many more moments of your videos thereafter.

I think this is what makes Ren special to. I have had a shitty day because someone on the internet decided to attack men who have suffered domestic abuse. Most abusers hide it so well from my mum and dad being upstanding people or my first long term partner threatening me with accusations of abusing her. You being open and talking helps me because just not being alone is important. I will give you a laugh my sister and I are no contact with our parents. Yet my parents have made my sisters ex the executor of their will and they see my ex every week. My sister and I are both in good relationships and still in contact even though we both have mental health issues due to our "amazing childhood". My mum got one of her friends to actually verbally attack me in the street for turning my back on my sainted mother. Rather than telling this woman the truth I just said she didn't know everything that was going on and walked away. You can guess how many times I have replayed that incident in my bed rather than sleeping.

The year 2005 in the lyrics gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes. I left my abusive husband in 2005. I just couldn't do it anymore. Violet being pregnant makes me cry because it reminds me that but for God's grace that could have been my story. I was 5 months pregnant when I left my ex-husband. I escaped with our lives and I raised my girls by myself. I have PTSD and still hear every demeaning and degrading word he drilled into my brain. It has taken me 18 years to not see myself as the disgusting monster he trained my brain to see. I still have to remind myself that someone isn't mocking me or playing with my head when I'm told I'm pretty. It's a cycle of continuous love, growth, and acceptance that I live today. I pray that you know just how amazing you truly are. ❤

Side note: I love your bookshelves. I have over 3,000, but then I’m 63. Just don’t spend away your retirement. My husband could have retired at 55 if I hadn’t bought so many books.😊
Just a lighter, funny side note to this terribly heavy experience for you.
I stayed in a battered women’s shelter salting away money at the office till I could buy bus tickets for me and my two toddlers. All of our clothes were in paper bags.
I could always tell when a woman was being abuse. Once you meet the dragon you see dragons everywhere.
Later I helped raise funds for a shelter in my hometown. I was the house manager on weekends.
In my 30’s I became a children’s missionary in the inner city/. The neglect, filth, and abandonment/violence was devastating. We lost too many kids to physical abuse, sex trafficking, murder, etc…. When I finally stopped, I had a nervous breakdown for 3 years.
The nightmares of both my ex-husband and those kids still creep in when I’m really stressed, but its
    Decreasing as the decades pass.
I’m still here. You stay too.

LJ, I finally got a chance to properly sit down and watch this - sending out hugs as I can only imagine that was a really hard one to sit through and watch.
Apart from his obvious genius, what I find with Ren is he has the lyrical and musical talent to put into words what so many people experience or want to say - he is talking to us and for us in a way, a real life social commentator for this generation. That leads to people feeling more confidence about opening up to share experiences and thoughts.
Even just by telling your own personal story, you are inspiring and helping others so take pride in that. Keep strong and safe - you've got an army of armchair keyboard warriors who have got your back and are on your side now lol !
As for Ren, being speechless is a natural reaction I find. The lighter side of Ren (or him with his band The Big Push) might be in order now lol.
Oh and I think Sam the cinematographer deserves a huge shout out for all the videos he has done (and continues to) with Ren.

As I've read it both Jenny and Screech were real people. Ren read the newspaper one day in 2019 and buried on the 6th or 7th page was a short "write-up" [I guess you'd call it] on the tragic death of two 14-year-olds; a girl, Jenny, and her killer [proper name James somebody] known in the Neiborhood as Screech. He thought that kind of news [of the decay in society that resolves in such ways] deserved more attention. So, he wrote the first two of the trilogy shortly after reading of them. These few years later he took on the task of writing a fictional story to further drive home the point that this continuing cycle of violence and decay in society should be paid attention to. So, the entire Violet story he designed to fit the personalities of those two and how they are made. Very impressive writing [and storytelling] and motivation resulted in Violet's Tale. Easily imagined they were brought up in separate foster homes. Jenny took on the quiet nature [still nature] of her mom [freezing in her tracks, unable to move when commanded to give up her goods] while Screech took on the character of his father. 14 years after two zero zero five they met each other probably for the first time and a newspaper article on the 6th or 7th page is what became of it. [as Ren has imagined it for us] His story telling has purpose. Real purpose. That is what has him stand alone [it seems] in today's society. [unique as an artist]

I admire your willingness to stand up and tell even part of your story. The social taboo, the negative feelings, self shaming, it keeps so many silent. The only way we can BREAK the cycle for generations to come is not just to make resources available to those in need, and make sure the fact that they exist funnel through the proper channels so those that could use them are made aware but more importantly, probably most importantly ... We need to destigmatize their use, make it not so focused on the victim status and more on the fresh start. On the safety. We need to collectively change the narrative so no more children grow to fall prey to the same traps. People like you, people like Ren, are the voices that should be, that are shaping our future society.
Thank you. I am so happy to hear that you are connecting with others and together we're all seeing that none of us are alone in this.
Last, little side note. I think the issue with the phrase about hurt people, I love it. I think perhaps you have not looked at it this way... (And if you have, I apologize but just in case I figured I'd put it out there) your comment about not all of us do, I think that's close to it, I'm sure I worded it incorrectly. I don't think it's meant to be a warning or statement suggesting that we all will. It isn't saying all hurt people are hurtful... I believe it simply means that all people that harm others in one way or another, most likely were harmed themselves at some point. Which is what shaped their behaviors. Like nobody wakes up clear headed, healthy, in stable life scenarios and thinks huh I want to rob, kill, steal, lie, etc. That most likely had some traumas themselves. Whether it was a narcissistic parent, abusive relationship, heck even a blow to the head and traumatic brain injury. That being said it isn't an excuse or pass. At least, how I was lead to understand during my own periods of recovery, is obviously an abusive situation needs to be changed immediately, but in circumstances like with addiction, when your loved on, or friend is experiencing some kind of trigger or situation that causes them to react in a negative way, even if you had no part in it, that you are unfortunately collateral damage in somebody else's trauma loop, and that means above all else that you should try to not turn inward and let their negative situation. And possibly hurtful words or behaviors define you, influence your self image or diminish your sense of self worth. Their poor behavior speaks more to their character or personality and far less if at all about yours. Like... They didn't pick a person because they think any individual "deserves" it. it's less about the person they hurt, and more about the person doing the hurting. In their mind anyhow. It's about the void they themselves are trying to fill. It's about them. Their poor behavior is about them being hurt and the result, not about anybody that the harm being deserving, or anybody they cheat on being not enough. It usually has to do with them feeling like not enough.
I think it's in hopes to prevent a person who is struggling with the individual in their life internalizing the hurtful words and actions.
Again, just my take. But thank you again. So much. And congrats on the growth of your channel!

I can totally understand where you are coming from, and I agree. People are shaped by the relationships they are in, and often damaged by trauma of any kind.
However, this phrase (something similar as I can't remember it exactly) has always struck me: 'your negative emotions/poor mental health is not your fault, but how you react to it/behave is your responsibility'.
I think people who have been hurt are more likely to hurt others, intentionally or not, however, you shouldn't use the fact that you trauma or mental health struggles as an excuse.
Really hope that makes sense? Thank you again, so much for commenting on such a difficult topic so sensitively 💜

Just on observation on your very raw reaction to something that clearly hit home hard: Putting yourself on here, for all to see, to be so vulnerable, is a gift of trust in strangers. Unlike the saying "you earn trust", to me, I see it not as earned, but wrapped up in a bow and given as an unconditional gift, and it is down to the recipient to hold it or misuse it. The level of guts to give your trust enough to put yourself here for all to see, is brave of course, but more, it shows me you can see that if things ever have a way of improving, it has to start with taking that step onto unsafe and unpredictable ground and see what happens, and you dear lady, have knowingly pushed yourself forward, taken that step, and showed the viewers what being brave really means, its not about heroics, its about going through something you could have avoided to improve yourself in some way.

Thank-you so much for your open / candid reactions. Through Ren's music i have discovered some truly remarkable people, who have opened my eyes and ears artistically, technically and emotionally. I cannot imagine the strength it must take to endure what you have been through and I hope that by sharing your story, that it helps to take some of the darkness away and replaces it with the love that you deserve. If you want a change of pace / something a bit lighter, you could he a look at some Ren busking - the band is called the big push.

It's so tough watching you go through these emotional roller coasters and hearing about the abuse you suffered, particularly as someone who had a relatively great childhood. I use the word 'relatively' because almost everyone is impacted by some negative aspect of their parents and their relationship with each other and you. But compared to your experience, I feel bloody blessed. As I say in every comment, I truly wish you a better future that you can rely on and not be fearful of (reference: "I'm scared of being okay 'cause all things change, all things change"). Much love!

It's hard viewing yet I still feel I have to watch, because it shows you sides of life that many are silent about. Your strength and perseverance are inspiring. It's got me thinking about what I talk infrequently about, my own experiences that I've got through. I've always been stubborn & when I spoke up as a child I was believed in various situations. I'm glad your step mother gave you a safe place. My mother was my safe place, my step mother not at all.
Yes it's hard to know what to say after watching a tragedy that is told with such haunting beauty.

The best part of the whole trilogy imo was either at the end of screeches tale when he kicks in with "Richard was an officer who stood..." or violets tale where he comes in with "that's the sound of his fists..." musically speaking that is.
Don't be quick to condemn screech think about his potential societal position. I read Patrick his best friend has been screwing the love of his life which has been tormenting his mindset and thought processes for a long time. Screech has been suicidal for along time and longing to die. He then bumped into jenny their eyes they met. When he killed Jenny he killed himself. He saw himself in his twins eyes. He acted on ferocious emotion. Unbeknownst to him and he ultimately and immediately regretted his actions. Compassion is needed here.
Patrick was with screeches mrs in Patrick's when he was knocking. He knew this deep down hence the persistence in knocking. He then immediately phones his Mrs but she was busy. This certified his deep agonising suspicions hence he went out swinging he effectively committed suicide.
The trilogy is extremely thought provoking. It's a modern-day masterpiece. Big facts hundred percent.
