The words in French translated to English - My dearest Josephine,How the world has changed since last I wrote. So tonight I take up my pen, not to marvel at these wondrous times, but to declare the love that is in my heart.
I remember seeing the Mind's Eye trilogy on PBS as a teenager back in the Nineties, and this song always stayed with me. It's so lovely, and I'm glad to be able to hear it whenever I please, now.
I hadn't heard this song SINCE the 90's, and it kept coming back in my head randomly for the past 2 decades. I had to remember what it was from and backtrack from there, and just found it again. Found out very quickly why it stuck for 2 decades.
This song brings me back to when I was 18 and longing to be a pioneer in Virtual Reality. I'm now 48, and it never happened, but still, these lyrics bring a tear to my eye, even to this day; for what was, what is, and what could have been. The letter to Josephine is simply beautiful and sums up all I wish I had transformed to be. Maybe in the next simulation.
> @masnaringquest4626 Don't ever give up hope - at only 48 chronological years, you're still a youngster! If that longing still possesses you, go for it! There are so many new avenues in the technological arena perhaps you can find another niche you can make your own or contribute to. I'm an old-timer and have always retained a bit of "the child" within me - it keeps me enthusiastic, it keeps me curious and looking for the learning every day and I will never give up hope. You said, " .. for what was, what is, and what could have been." Consider adding the words "and what will be" to that - you have the power within you to look forward and make your dreams happen!
If a song was a road I would ride through the night to you there s a moon on the rise and I m drawn on the tide to you. And I will be with you and I will stay with you and I will dream with you if you need me too anytime, anywhere in a corner of your mind s eye...
I first saw this video over a decade ago - and it was so transcendant it changed my life forever. I will never forget the song or the effect it has made - so few things in life have ever touched me so closely. I advise to anyone to watch The Gate To The Mind's Eye
I memorised the whole letter to Josephine and took great pleasure in reciting it to people who then said 'oh, you speak French!' Tee hee. Those were the days. :)
Check out the whole soundtrack to this movie, especially the sections titled “neo” and thru to the “valley of the minds eye” these are best part of thomas dolby’s work in this film in my opinion, so beautiful!
Planets will cool, Josie Tyrants will rule, Josie I will be here for you Oceans divide, Josie Stars will collide, Josie Nations will rise and fall And never see the world through these eyes
Many ppl say they remember this as a child. I didn't have the pleasure but I'm so glad I came across the Minds Eye series in 2018. This song is my absolute favorite even the cgi.. thanks for the upload
Amen. I believe I first saw this when I was about 10 or so...and I was totally captivated by it, even though my comprehension of it was totally different to how it is now. It definitely makes a lot more sense now, and I understand it better. Back then, it was just pretty music and beautiful images. Today, I love it even more. What an amazing piece of work.
Whenever I hear this song, it always makes me think of my dreams, the infinite landscapes, the people, the adventures... Everything... Thank you minds eye...
the best song forever. having risked life in Los Cabos three years ago by your side Bea has made it worthwhile to live the dream of the illusion that we call "vida", and this song will be our song.
Me too, I stayed up late to watch a television series about computer animation and recorded this whole show. I didn't expect it to, but it touched me as a young lad and even now when I hear it I'm back at that time listening to it enraptured. It's such an amazing song and the video goes so well with it.
Oh, the beautiful memories this brings back! I used to watch this all the time when I was a kid and I really felt like I was in another world. Even today, I'm so not there when I listen to that song... Since my first language is french, the beginning always makes me smile: "Ma chère Joséphine, que le monde a changé depuis ma dernière lettre..."
13 years later, I just rewatched The Gate to the Mind's Eye and it still makes me dream. This beautiful song is stuck in my head and I keep listening to it. So nostalgic !
How could the VHS be worn out> My family's Original Mind's eye, Beyond the Mind's eye, and Gate to the Mind's eye all work 100% perfectly. Maybe my family is just lucky I guess.
Many many years ago I picked up this album on a whim maybe it was a cover that caught my eye I was totally mesmerized by the whole album particularly this song I hadn't realized what an amazing artist Thomas Dolby was the way he mixed science and the art of music and videos was truly genius
This was a CD and a DVD he relaeased at the end of o6' - beginning of 07' - "Sole Inhabitant Tour 2006". He is still active in the music biz and you can read up on him on wikipedia.
That's the one. I bought the DVD not long after seeing this. The animation is quite dated, but who cares, I didn't buy it for that. There are a lot of memories and feelings I'd forgotten that it brought back to me so it was well worth it.
This is a great tune. I am, however, disapointed in the DVD that came out a few years back. Have had and still have the laser disc of this masterpiece and I can't say the DVD compares very well. Still a great soundtrack and a great movie.
Thanks for uploading another clip from this excellent series, JanciB. You wouldn't happen to have the original Mind's Eye, would you? I'd love to see some tracks from that video.

3:08 My one actual problem with this beautiful song. The Enlightenment was not the birth of science. Men had figured out the Earth was round and its general size in the third century BC. The middle ages did not result in everyone thinking the Earth was flat. And the Catholic church itself at this time period, 'prove that fairies exist, THEN we'll talk about how they fit in church doctrine.' Not to mention the Eastern Roman Empire had in fact fell only a couple centuries ago by that time. The term Byzantine Empire was made up by the Enlightenment because it would look awkward to talk about reviving the long lost virtues of Rome when Rome had still been around a very short time ago.
This movie doesn’t have a timeline really. I looked it up to understand better some of the imagery and found that the visuals were not created for the film but were pieces of works for different purposes, like commercials, demo reels, music videos etc. all stitched together. And while the end result was fantastic, the revelation of that floored me

Neat, somewhere around 25 years after first hearing this I now know what the words mean.
I love it
Incredible 🎵

I remember renting this entire series obsessively. The CG has not aged as well as Dolby's work on the sound track, has it?

Brought tears to my eyes. Holy throw back to the 90s.
Including living snap shots of the Gay 90s (1890s).

Watched these movies as a kid, and decided to find them again a few days ago. And...i'm really glad I did because this song is addicting...
I'm a big Dolby fan and have never heard this before... I'm gobsmacked! Brilliant!

Quantum Mechanic is another great track from Voyage
@@abbanova8048 that video with the man running blew my mind when I was young. The song is spectacular

How'd you discover it?
I literally have the opening line of this song tattooed on my collarbone
+Melody Pope sounds like very good idea
I got the bridge of this song tattooed on my shoulder a few months agooo :)))
That’s amazing and I wish I could see, this has been my favorite song since I was about 8 years old
That's brilliant. I love that idea 💡

I remember reading this video from my local video store and watching it obsessively. Has it really been 30 years?
Always one of my favorite songs from the Mind's Eye videos.
Coffee Cat: Yes, mine too. A great song with great lyrics, and from a great series! Yet this will also stand on its own as a great music video. 😊
First time hearing this song. I heard Thomas Dolby in high school (blinded by science). This song is amazing....

this song has helped so much after my mom has gotten lung cancer omg Tyson
I love when my adoration for vintage cgi and vaporwave combine. Thank you to the Mind's Eye series, and to Manchac Networks.
I remember watching this as a kid, my dad bought it at RadioShack
i taped it off pbs
Pure magic that is what it is
"There's a moon on the rise*..."
Probably the two most romantic lines I've ever heard in any song. What a great way to put ideas together. I love it.

Remember stumbling across this on a videotape back in 2005-06 and was captivated intensely. This song will always remain my favourite from it.
My all-time favorite music video.
I love this one, it's the most romantic song from the series. Gotta love it.

Listened to this on repeat for hours yesterday. Sublime.
awesome song in its own. i wonder if this ever hit the airwaves
Oh maaaan... I was a kid when I watching this on vhs for the first time. Incredible feelings
This song is so sultry, so seductive...just delicious!!!
Любил слушать эту песню когда было 18. Сейчас мне 46 и слушаю её опять. Словно это было минуту назад и нет этих лет...
such a beautiful song
One of his best compositions, such an amazing, beautiful love song.
I obsessively played this cd when it came out-i thought the movie was beyond cool back then 😎
One of my favorite songs growing up. And the best song in this animation series. Much love Tom Dolby.
such a beautiful song, this was on a music compilation album I bought in the 90s and I've loved it ever since
I have this movie - one of my favorites since forever.
Thank You for Sharing!
Actually I have had this CD since 1998 and the VHS version around the same time. still love it to this day
I listen to it really often: one of the best love songs I ever heard!

Can someone smarter than me confirm or deny that the intro lyrics are taken from a letter by Napoleon to his wife Josephine?
i rmemebr thinking wow look how real this looks LOl now things are alot diff
LOL, hadn't thought of that! Yeah, it could be, although I actually was speaking French as opposed to Latin. :)
