    I've had a 30D since 2006 and have not upgraded. Unless if you're a professional or a serious hobbyist, there's not much of an incentive to buy a modern camera.

    You are on point regarding the rendering and colors. I picked one up for cheap and the lack of sharpness actually works great for portraits as its more forgiving on the skin than newer sensors which can be too sharp at times. These are classic canon colors that I remember from the early 2000s. The images it produces are organic and just pleasing. Thanks.

      Yeah, the image results from this camera is still very nice, unique and also organic. The low price tag is really a plus on this camera that is also still tough and reliable. • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  Год назад +4

      Thank you for watching and also for the kind words, really much appreciated it! :-) Regarding your questions, I would say that the 5d classic will be better at producing images in lowlight, has better skin tones and colour rendition and if you really want a unique look for both RAW and JPEG, the 5d classic would be my choice. That said, if you prefer a crop sensor camera and a camera that is overall more responsive and quick, the 30d would be a better choice to go for in my opinion. Hope that helps. Great video. My son now has this camera but is having trouble connecting it up to his mac book Pro. I suggested going to Canon to download drivers, so it would see the camera connected. • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  Год назад

      Hi, thank you very much for the kind words as well as congratulations to your son on the camera. Regarding downloading images from the camera to the computer, I think that probably due to the age of the software, it might not really be compatible with the version of the operating system, therefore, it may not be able to communicate as effectively with the camera... However, a quicker solution is of course to use a CF card reader which is very cheap nowadays to find. Then you won't need the software from Canon to download the images, you can just connect the card to the card reader and it will be as simple as dragging and dropping files from a memory stick onto the computer's drive. :-) Hope that helps. Hi David! :) I have one question - how would you compare sooc image/colors rendition between 20d, 30d and 40d? Does 40d have same "olddchool" vibe as 30d?

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  Год назад +13

      I would say that the 20D and the 30D are very similar in terms of the look and image quality, generally speaking. The rendition is also very similar that I can't really go wrong with either. However, the 30D will have a tiny bit of advantage in lowlight over the 20D as well as having a bit more accurate metering system than the 20D. But just for the image look and colour rendition, I would say you can't go wrong with both and you will not see much of a difference that you would justify going for one over the other just for the colour... Regarding the 40D, the 40D has more of an old-school digital look rather an old-school look of the 20D and 30D that want to match the film look. So if you want an old school digital look, the 40D is the camera to go for and you will get the benefit of having a more rugged body with live-view feature, better lowlight performance, better AF system, much better metering system as well as a much faster camera. But if you want to go for an old school look that does not look too digital, the 20D and the 30D are the options to go for in my opinion. The contrast for example, are more faded look on the 20D and 30D over the 40D. The skin tones to me also looks more "magical" (?) on the 20D and 30D over the 40D. The 40D's skin tones are still nice but just more neutral and digital (but not as pleasant as the 5d classic nor the 5d mark ii)... That said, if you want to manipulate the images, the 40D is the way to go and you will also have the benefit of a sensor cleaning system inside the 40D because to be honest, I had to manually clean the sensor of the 20D and 30D from time to time because the dust was able to get inside... I am not sure how much that helped but I hope you can somewhat get a more understanding of the three cameras. I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

      @DavidCuhls  Год назад +2

      You're welcome! By the way, if you want the film look but with better colour rendition and over more pleasing colour reproduction, the 5d classic is also another good choice. I am not recommending it for the full frame sake but even in terms of the classic colours, the 5d classic really delivers and will get you in more environments and conditions than the 30d will. :-) But the 30d is still also a good option if you are sticking with the 30d. :-)

      @@DavidCuhls well, when it comes to ff I allways thought d700 (had one until recently) is a 2x better camera that also has oldschool rendering, hell you can even get d600 (which is still totally usable even for paid jobs, which i also do nowadays) for similar price instead 5d classic ;) additionally i have only one canon lens (more of a Nikon user as you can guess ;) ) lens - Tamron 17-50/2.8 which I actually bought to use it on... m43 with viltrox speedbooster/af adapter :D I i am looking for some cheap fun camera for this particular lens :) ALSO - If we are talking absolutely vintage look from dslr, nothing comes close to Fuji s2pro (sadly mine stopped working so I bought s3pro, but being overally better camera, it seems not as close to film as s2 ). I would hugely recommend you s2/s3 to try - very funny cameras with gorgeous superccd sensors :)

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  Год назад +2

      Thank you for the recommendations, really appreciated it. I personally love the D700 and the D600, I still enjoy using my D600 as well. :-) That said, I also love the D3 and the D3s, though they are not really producing that vintage colour but I love the rendition of their colour reproduction very much.
      I think it might also be depending on the location where you live because where I live, the 5d classic can be found for around 150 euros give or take on the condition but the D700 and other cameras you've recommended are over 250 euros give or take in where I live... I've tried the s3 pro but haven't tried the s2 pro... This is totally subjective but I am not really likely Fuji colours that much... I can see the charm in them but it really isn't my cup of tea, whether it's their older cameras or even the modern cameras. Don't get me wrong, they are great and that's one of the reasons why I own many of their cameras but in the same time, their colours aren't really my style... I like the colour science more from Canon, Nikon and Pentax. So I can't really comment much on the Fuji side... But thank you very much again for putting in the effort into your recommendation, I will look through it and when I get a chance, I will try them out for sure :-)

    I have the Canon 30D as well. In terms of picture quality and build quality, I have no complaints. I can live with slightly less than 11 EV dynamic range and visible noise at ISO levels higher than 800. However, what annoys me terribly is the AF system. It is fast but terribly inaccurate. At this time, Canon decided to equip all their cameras, except the 1D flagship model lineup, with a limited AF system. The 20D, 30D, 40D, 5D, and 5D Mark II all have the same terrible AF system. The center AF point is the only cross-type sensor, and even though it is said to be high-precision for lenses with an aperture of f/2.8 or faster, its accuracy with lenses of f/1.8 or faster is very unreliable. The other AF sensors are not cross-type, are of low quality, and work only with lenses of f/5.6 or faster.
    However, there is an interesting glitch: if a Speedlite with an AF assist light is used or if auto select for AF points is used, the precision dramatically increases. A strong point of this camera is its sensor, which produces a nice and very specific tone, very similar to the 5D Mark I. If you use the 30D, use an aperture of f/4 and higher to compensate for AF inaccuracy or take multiple shots. The 30D can produce very nice and professional-looking pictures.

      if you can afford EF-S 18-135MM F/3.5-5.6 IS STM it is pretty sharp lens. I have 17-85 and it is OK lens but have terrible chromatic aberration you need to fix later in post proces. For tele I am very happy with 70-300 USM IS. If stopped down to 5.6 it can produce surprisingly sharp images in range 70-200. Prime lens 50/1.8 is little bit long on crop, but is is nice light and sharp stopped down to 2.8 and above and make reasonable portrait lens on 30D. I dont have 28, but I have 35/2 and 24/2.8 and even 35 makes creepy micro motor sound, it is nice basic lens. If there is a cheep version for you to buy, I will recommend 24-85USM. it is very old lens but makes nice pictures when stopped down to 5.6 and it is very light lens. Wide open it is soft, but it is nicely soft and produce "retro look" images. As I wrote above. 30D have problematic AF with low accuracy, therefore lenses faster than 2.8 are often focused incorrectly therefore expensive lenses like 24-70L/2.8 is risky and expensive move.

      Yeah, I just searched it up that it is not officially weather sealed. I got the information from Canon that the built quality is tough enough to face basic rough environments but not as harsh as the higher end cameras. So that's why there is basic weather sealing to the camera because from testing, I will stand basic heatwaves, sandy conditions and light rain, which offers quite a bit of flexibilities. I didn't mentioned it specifically for the AF because the camera only really has 9 AF points, so it would still be faster to get to the desired AF points with just either one of the dials than the joy stick (at least in my experience). Don't get me wrong, I think that the joy stick is a great feature but in my opinion, it is more effective when reviewing images (especially when zoomed in and wanting to navigate quickly to different parts of the image) as well as for quick and precise navigation through the menu. I always wanted to know all throughout the years, why most of majority Canon shooters preferred the 30D shoots better in low light or less grain noice than the 40D and 50D.

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  Год назад +7

      I think it really depends on how you look at it and also how on the user's preferences. In my experience and opinion, despite the 40d not being that good in lowlight, but it is just very slightly better than the 30D's lowlight performance with a slightly more dynamic range and slightly more resolution. Sure, in some scenarios, the 40d may produce a bit more grain but it can trade in some of the resolution in post for cleaning up a bit of grain and noise which will result in cleaner images that the 30d. This difference is much more apparent with the 50D in my opinion and experience. With a much better image processor inside the 50, better sensor design and readout as well, the 50d really just blows the 30d right out the water when it comes to lowlight performance.
      That said, there is no denying in the unique look of the 30D that gives more character than the 40D's more dull colours and also the more digital look of the 50D. So in this case, the 30D can still be a nice budget DSLR that still deliver good image quality but with nice and unique characteristics to the images. That said, this is only based on my opinion and experience, it of course varies between different users. Thank you so much for watching and also for sharing your opinion, very much appreciated it. I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

      @@DavidCuhls I have in my collection a CANON 40D, associated to a 50mm 1.8 prime during daylight I can produce some sweet pictures. I appreciated especially the natural colors.
