And honestly, that's exactly how it played, too. But as a really awesome gameplay feature, you could do the speed boost in one of two ways.. You could use the checking button, like always on the console, or you could double tap the direction you were going for a boost. To make even more fun, that alternate method also worked on offense. I remember totally abusing that with Petr Klima on the Lightning.
That's what this shit was about right fucking here. We used to have 3 way games, 1 guy on keyboard, 1 guy on mouse, 1 guy on gravis pad, 1 screen, so much fun. MMMM YES>>>>>>>>
I'd love to see modern hardware try to take this approach at making a hockey game. Super high resolution 2d sprites on a rotating plane. Or a new Mortal Kombat or Pitfighter type game with digitized sprites.
I managed to install this on my old Windows 98 laptop. It works perfectly until I advance the New Game screen (at 3:17 in this video). The screen goes black and the sound start looping and the whole computer freezes. Curiously there is an audio break in your video too at the exact moment my laptop crashes. Anyone have any ideas what I could try to fix this? Even the gameplay demo works after the intro but at that specific menu transition it always crashes. Annoying.
Been trying to get this game to fully work for almost 30 years. Still cant lol. Nothing on the internet helps, sadly. The game has always worked but, no sound. And on Dosbox, no sound, and no crowd, its just black outside of the rink.
Never skipped that intro, and it still gives me the chills! That, and the menu music used to get me really hyped.

@@laalki80 Jep, tältähän se näytti. '97 taisi olla eka änäri, joka käytti polygoneja.
my absolute favorite game as a kid. also never skipped the intro and the graphics at the time were so awesome compared to the consoles!
@@mattbrodsky3106NHL 96 still the GOAT.
NHL 98 "Are you afraid..of masked men..."
man- i would give anything to time warp back to the 90's
Closest thing for me was Duck Season in VR. You should look it up. Between rounds it places you in a 90s house in front of the TV.
Selänne and Numminen on the same starting line-up never gets old for us Finns.
my first nhl game. i spend every second to play it back in the days. what amazing memories.
I remember that our family computer 486dx2 66mhz and 8mb ram couldn't run this game without stuttering 😅
I still own this! This game literally changed my life!
That menu music too, one of my favourites :)
29 years after release, NHL 96 both on PC and Sega Genesis are still MASTERPIECE!
The Jets and the Nords! I may have to hunt this one down
There is only one player in this game that still plays in the NHL.
Sarven Yapar Don’t tell me, Jagr.
Jets on a 2-0 breakaway. Emerson "I think I'll pass it back to the point for no good reason." @11:52
I broke three flight joysticks playing this game back in the days.
this game was great at the time!! i used to play the demo over and over
I played this TO THE GROUND. OMG so many memories.
As a Brit and a kid I knew next to nothing about ice hockey, but still loved the shit out of this game.
Never tried the PC version, but played the Sega Genesis NHL '96 constantly for a long time.
At the risk of sounding old... They just don't make them like this anymore, this was the zenith
It looks like NHL 95 game from PC with 3D sprites, very interesting!!

memories :D gotta find game and play once again xD
I am confused, the environment is 3D but players are 2D. Still, looks pretty fun for that time!
Fond memories.
i remeber i used to have this version good times
I miss those days
I would play this game with my father-in-law for hours and hours

I think I used to play this horizontally, IIRC
Same! At the time it reminded me of a TV broadcast and it was mind-blowing
Omg I loved this game
soundtrack 🤟
Why are the Nordiques still in the game if the 95-96 season was the year they moved to Colorado?
Ikr
@@boutphillips9720 Yeah!
@@JaredtheRabbit They Became Colorado in 96 the games are made the year before so this game was made in 95
