that thumbnail summarizes the entire game industry so well. i love playing games from 80-10 (the early ones get boring much faster but a few months later i can take a run again), but after about 2010 almost the only change in general is the emphasis on microtransactions, battle passes and other junk that pretty much ensures no game will be as impressive and solid as the 2010ish games were. that picture is the dictionary definition of diminishing returns
Spent most time with NHL 93. It was just pure fun to play. Really good old golden times. Then switched to NHL 96 and legendary NHL 98, which was the real milestone. Next big step was introducing NHL 2003, many years peaking with NHL 2009. Since then, EA somehow managed to kill the series with random ideas and become unplayable. Anyways, whenever I do recall NHL series, warm heat comming from my heart instantly. What a time it was.
i didn't even know there was a hockey game in the 70s. lol i remember playing some old style games as a kid. but never hockey first one i can think of was in the 80s Nintendo. that was my first hockey game
Excellent video, thanks! 👍Oh, God, this PC games 1978 and later so funny, I have no idea that this games exist, wow! Sure, fast progress of hockey video games and it variety - very impressing! My first hockey game be "Blades of Steel" (on 8-bit Dendy, it licensed Taiwan analog of NES), later played on SNES from NHL 95 to PlayStation1 (NHL97-2001), Xbox (original) from NHL’06-08. Unfortunately, NHL Hitz be very rare game in my country and I not played in it. And last my stage be Xbox360 from NHL’08 to NHL Legacy Edition (2016). My personal opinion and impressions from evolution, I can say in coupe of sentences. We can saw huge visual difference in gameplay and graphics in 80’s, 90’s and beginning of 2000’s. But, I think many people will agree, in last 10 years difference in gameplay and graphics not so huge how it be 20 years ago. Sure, difference exist, but it not so much how hockey games of 90’s be different from 80’s. Last huge level of evolutional difference be how Xbox NHL 2006 differ from PlayStation1 NHL 2001. When you look on EA NHL hockey on XboxOne you not saw so much difference from Xbox360 NHL 15 or 16 (Legacy Edition). All very close now. In same time in past we saw how much different hockey games existed, and now EA have 90% some kind of monopoly in Hockey games on last new generation console systems. But, all changing, and appear new companies whom try new directions, I mean VR, Oculus. And I have feeling what ways of EA console games and VR games will cross in future and it generate new, different hockey games from all that we knew before. Difficult to say now what it be and how, but progress and evolution of hockey games will continue. P.S. Sorry for my poor English.

EA's NHLPA '93 (Because they couldn't secure the rights to the NHL teams themselves) was the pinnacle of sports gaming and you will never convince me otherwise. That being said, what NHL Stanley Cup (1993) tried to do on the SNES may have been the most ambitious idea ever. At the 3:35 mark.
I loved NHL Stanley Cup. You had to get used to the camera switching around everytime the puck changed possession. I think NHL 93 had the hot and cold system, which I thought was a neat idea. Players stats would alter a bit per game. Personally 94 is the NHL game I played the most of though. I would buy these games very sporadically until around NHL 16.

that thumbnail summarizes the entire game industry so well. i love playing games from 80-10 (the early ones get boring much faster but a few months later i can take a run again), but after about 2010 almost the only change in general is the emphasis on microtransactions, battle passes and other junk that pretty much ensures no game will be as impressive and solid as the 2010ish games were.
that picture is the dictionary definition of diminishing returns
Couldn't raise the puck in "Blades of Steel". Had to pass it into the net.
Blades of Steel (NES & Game Boy), NHLPA Hockey '93, NHL 99, NHL 2000, NHL 2K3, NHL 11,12, 14 and 19 have always been my favorite Hockey video games
NHL '96 was my fav as we used to take turns playing it while in college
I had a Nintendo with Wayne Gretzky Hockey on it and it was a very good game. I would love to get my hands on that one again.
NHL 23 has the winter classics and it has the old people in it when you do it
It was nice when there was competition, not just the same game every year
NHL 98, NHL 08, NHL 2k5 and NHL 2K7 were gem
Wayne Gretzky Hockey II and Power Play Hockey were my jams.
The amount of times I saw Philadelphia teams in this video is unreal
Spent most time with NHL 93. It was just pure fun to play. Really good old golden times. Then switched to NHL 96 and legendary NHL 98, which was the real milestone. Next big step was introducing NHL 2003, many years peaking with NHL 2009. Since then, EA somehow managed to kill the series with random ideas and become unplayable.
Anyways, whenever I do recall NHL series, warm heat comming from my heart instantly. What a time it was.
Super Blood Hockey is such a fun game, highly recommend it
Ice hockey 🏒 is a coldest winter sport in Canada 🇨🇦!
Full Contact sport
Team sport
Pretty cool hearing all the players names that I grew up watching and pretending to be playing hockey as a little dude
1998 NHL we play with cousin on PS1 all time omg :)
i didn't even know there was a hockey game in the 70s. lol
i remember playing some old style games as a kid. but never hockey
first one i can think of was in the 80s
Nintendo. that was my first hockey game
Missing Puckoff which came out in 2022. Also, the 2K series needs to come back. Some of the game modes were so much fun
I really like those " Mario Lemieux Hockey" graphics. Something about it makes it seem like it could be a modern pixel art game.
1988 ice hockey! Loved that game!!
Mutant League Hockey and Football were by jams. Lets go Bones Jackson!!!
i actually have a still-functioning arcade cabinet for 2-on-2 Open Ice Challenge in my basement, played it in college. About 12 years ago, i found one on ebay and bought it
Is it just me or does anyone like the graphics of games based on real things like f1 and NHL fr 2010 to around 2014 just better than most modern games now?
Some of the older games seem wayyyy smoother in this video compared to how they actually play.
i had so many of those going all the way back to atari activision hockey. intellivision had a good hockey game. my friend had that system. the nintendo hockey w/ skinny, medium and big guys was the best.
NHL 2001 is kept in my heart. good times
That's gonna cause health issues if it hasn't already
NHL 94 with Roenick was awesome 😂
i loved the wayne gretzky hockey on the amiga
1:50 NES Ice Hockey, still legendary.
5:22 😂 I heard that
1:03 “he scores” *nuclear bomb goes off*
EA's NHLPA '93 (Because they couldn't secure the rights to the NHL teams themselves) was the pinnacle of sports gaming and you will never convince me otherwise.
