  • A friend asked me if I could replace a relay in a circuit board from his dryer. The new board cost over $200. l sourced another relay from the internet for $14 and then told him it was worth a try.

I recognize that, it’s off a whirlpool duet sport. I’m currently doing the same thing👍🏻

How do you just pop off the cap of the relay? Often times you just need to clean of the contact points

As I recall I had to use a small cutter wheel on a Dremel tool to cut the bottom of the cover. The points in this thing were melted together. There wasn't any way to save the component and for twelve dollars it was worth the effort to try.

@@repairsecrets oh ok. I just fixed my washing machine's drain pump. It wasn't turning on. I used a razor blade to slice off the top of the relay. Inside there is a solenoid that pushes two copper plates into contact. That's how the pump turns on. There was carbon or some other buildup. I simply cleaned off the area where they would make contact and glued the lid back on.

@@smkie-hf9pz That's good work and thanks for the heads up on what can be done.

I replaced the relay and reinforced the solder trace on the board with a short piece of copper wire and solder.

This was just a project where the client had nothing to lose so the possibility of repair was worth the risk of a failure.

Man I really wish you would’ve shown a closer better look at the motherboard when you were done. Can’t really see what you did with the wire. It looks like you put the wire on a different track then the one you started on. Is the wire on the same track as the start?

There are some better videos on RUclips. Run a search on repairing a dryer or Whirlpool or Maytag.

was that a dryer relay? If so and Im genuinely curious..why did you take out the whole board? I was able to change mine without taking the actual green motherboard out

First of all, it wasn't mine. A friend brought it over because he is worse than me at soldering. I don't know how the board sits in the dryer. Do you have access to both sides while it is mounted in the dryer?

@@repairsecrets pre mature comment lol..some relays depending on model are just bolted on under the control panel and not even on the board. Mine was held on by just two 1/4 bolts, not soldered at all.
