I saw the show recently. It was a terrific night of theatre! Lucie Jones was wonderful. But I went because I am a longtime fan of West End actress Josefina Gabrielle who was utterly charming as Denise! I also got a chance to talk with her afterwards and she is just as delightful in person. Go see this show!
The Baker's Wife may be the best musical that's seldom performed. I'm glad they're bringing it back. Meadowlark is incredible, but it's far from the only great song in that show, and the best of it is actually the ensemble pieces in which the village reacts to what happens with their baker. That's kind of the whole thing in the first place... it's not really about Aimable and Genevieve; it's about the town, with its dreamers and its endless petty feuds, and how they respond to an emotional firestorm in their midst.
Why can't she just sing the notes as written? Everything Lucie performs has to be an over-embellished, pop-riffed belting competition. A genuine focus on the anguish, heartache, emotions and conflict of the character (who is in an "impossible situation") is sadly missing here. #nuance Liz Callaway still OWNS this song.

I love Lucie but she’s not classically trained. She started on The X Factor after all. That’s her charm for me 🤷🏻♂️
to be fair any performance next to Liz Callaway's is going to seem lacking
