  • Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival this year. Only days after, it was receiving critical acclaim, and of course all Whedon Super-fans loved seeing their favourite actors in something new. Will this labour of love pay off? Or will all this Much Ado... be for Nothing?

I like your monochrome, very nice tribute. Fabulous movie, saw it at the Jameson Film Festival. The audience applauded and cheered so much at Nathan's first appearance on screen you couldn't hear his first lines.

I really like your review eventhough I haven't had the chance to watch the movie yet. I like the specific choice of words you use to express your thoughts. I am a big whedon fan as well and I do share your thoughts on " Joss knows how to use Cinema to the best of its ability".
    Kudos again. :)

Much Ado About Nothing is such an amazing show, as Wills plays usually tend to be. (yup, total first name bases, Shakespeare and I are just that close). Joss and Will are made for each other. Joss is the director i would trust most to bring out the best in anything. I am so excited that it will be on the big screen. Some day i hope to be just as good of a director as Joss.

That's true concerning Branagh. And yes, Whedon arguably is much more versatile in terms of his output over his career. Though to be fair Branagh has recently begun to increasingly branch out, what with "Sleuth", "Thor", "Jack Ryan", and that Guernsey movie he's doing with Kate Winslet.
All that aside, it sounds like Whedon made many interesting interpretations of Shakespeare's play. Might check it out if it plays in Ottawa.

Also, now that I think about it, Branagh and Whedon are kinda similar in that they both have that family of cast/crew they always work with. Whedon's got his troop, while Branagh's got Richard Briers, Brian Blessed, Derek Jacobi, Jimmy Yuill, composer Patrick Doyle, D.P. Roger Lanser, and (formerly) Emma Thompson.

"Never before has a single film maker had such an impressive year"
I would argue that Oliver Stone had such a year when he made both "Salvador" and "Platoon" in 1986 to great critical and financial acclaim.
And as to Whedon vs. Branagh, as a Branagh fan I would argue that he is very adept at making a cinematic adaptation of Shakespeare. For example, his impossibly long camera takes that must have required endless preparation. But I would agree that he loves to use the hyperbole of theatre.

I am very much aware of that. I only mention in the fact that they are each other's better halves not only in this film, but in Angel as well. I actually mention the fact they are married in my interview with Amber Benson of Buffy fame. You should check out my Whedon interviews!

I won't argue with you in terms of Stone... Although, just by sheer volume... I think Joss has the edge. He wrote THREE movies this year! :)
In terms of the argument of Whedon v Brannagh, I'm not arguing that he is not a good filmmaker, but Joss is just so much more versatile a director and knows how to use all aspects of what film brings. The long takes Brannagh uses are again, I think akin to his training on stage, when you could have the same set for a long time over a period of many acts.

For what it's worth, Alexis Denisof is Alyson Hannigan's "other half", not Amy Acker's.

My problem with film is that I love Branagh´s version of the play, with all its warmth, color and amazing performances (except Keanu Reaves and Robert Sean Leonard´s). In comparison, Whedon´s take feels like a home video, or a taped rehearsal of a much better story.

Actually in England (i only know about here, and i don't know where you are from) you do pronounce the 't' otherwise it is just bad english diction and dialect, like some people who are too relaxed with their language may say 'water' as something like 'wa-ugh' Sorry if you were only joking, just thought i would mention anyway.

I must say you were more than a little kind to Alexis Denisof's performance. I found him distractingly bad. I don't think it's a stretch to say that he was largely the reason this movie bombed. Whedon doesn't have any really great male actors in his 'quiver', but even Reed Diamond did a better job with the Elizabethan language.
It's too bad Amy Acker couldn't have played both Beatrice and Benedick. She was the rare bright spot in this movie.

I AM an English teacher. I can't let my students see this and hear anything but perfect diction. Haha

At first I thought you were just kidding around. Clearly, you're not... so allow me to educate you.
This is from the Oxford dictionary - "When pronouncing often, some speakers sound the 't', saying /ˈôftən/; for others, it is silent,/ˈôfən/, as in soften, fasten, listen. Either pronunciation is acceptable."
So... both are acceptable. I also pronounce the 't' in ignoranT and Troll.
