  • This tutorial explains how to clean your resin casting out of a silicone mold. After the cast resin comes out of the silicone mold there's always some clean up to get it ready for painting. I go over how to remove and clean the pour spout, air vents, and flashing (seams), with various hand tools, and demo how I give it a final sanding and prep for painting. I also introduce some power tools that help expedite this process. Here are some materials and tools links from the video:
    Smooth-Cast 300, Casting Resin (pint kit): amzn.to/2ITXHME
    Smooth-Cast 300, Casting Resin (gallon kit): amzn.to/2RECY2c
    Super Sculpey Firm: amzn.to/2XfW98l
Mold Star 15 Silicone (pint kit): amzn.to/2NhaahA
    Sprue Cutters (flush cut): amzn.to/2IVUOLm
    X-ACTO Knife: amzn.to/2Xc9ejc
Zona Fine Razor Saw (I prefer the Zona over the X-ACTO): amzn.to/2X6GXpb
    X-ACTO Blades (assorted): amzn.to/2XcDHZL
    Needle File Set: amzn.to/2Xc9Mpg
    Sanding discs (variety pak): amzn.to/2xkj1Eu
    Belt/Disc Sander: amzn.to/2Nvn3EK
** I have this model from Central Machinery - It’s cheap and a bit wonky, but works for me.
This Rikon here would be an awesome upgrade: amzn.to/2XcK8k4
**My bandsaw’s also a little wonky- Rinkon makes a really nice 10 inch: amzn.to/2NvnLlo
and they have a deluxe model for about $100 more: amzn.to/2XbMiRb

If those side cutters aren't "flush cut", you may want to look into a pair. Even better is the sprue cutters model makers use. They have to cut hundreds of gundam robot pieces from a sprue to complete a single kit, so they've developed a tool that is very good at it-- pieces need little or no cleanup after the snip.
Also I love 3M utility cloth for sanding, but it looks like you've got your sanding situation sorted!

Yeah, the beveled edge drives me nuts. I gotta get me a pair of those sprue cutters.

I've seen other tutorials where the artist uses ball bearings or something similar.

yep- or anything round- I push the end of a sharpie pen into the clay- the pouring the other half creates the positive :)

I have a question. Do you put toner to your resin like (white toner) to achieve the white result for your resin or your resin automatically turns to white when it cures?

    • @SteveFerrera

that specific resin turns white. You can get clear and tint it with any color

@@SteveFerrera sorry to disturb, but smooth on brand resins are extremely costly in my country. Mostly because the sellers import it. Is there any general description for the type of you use?
