what if you're fascinated by these games but have never played them before, and want to learn to play them but you're autistic so it's difficult interacting with new people (or the people at the nearest game store aren't receptive to newcomers)?
Dune: Imperium Mystic Vale Tyrants of the Underdark Fort Dale of Merchants Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle Just some more deckbuilders I think deserve a mention
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle Is one of the best deck builders around, that game shocked me with how good it is. I was expecting a simple cash grab trying to capitalize off the IP. But no man, they put serious time and thought into game design and theme. Love it.
@@teraxe even with the lack of deck-pruning? I mean, on the campaign co-op side, it's amazing, but the deckbuilding felt even more cloggy that Star Realms...
Valley of the Kings and the rest of the deck-deconstruction subgenre(including Flamme Rouge) also deserve a mention. Especially Flaming Pyramids & Abandon All Artichokes, for being Uno-level accessible, and the latter I think is a better gateway deckbuilder than Dominion, probably even among top 10 gateways of the past & next decade
Dale of Merchants is a great little deck builder, I love the push/pull of building the deck but simultaneously using up those cards permanently to progress, and the art is lovely too, definitely deserving of a mention!
It's the game that got me interested in the genre, so I really agree that Dale of Merchants is good. Also really fun to re-play since you get to select the cards you want to include beforehand.
I was like ouch, but to be fair, their cards are not the same dimensions as the standard cards and Japanese cards size. So finding sleeves can be pretty stupid
I'd recommend the harry potter deck builder Battle for Hogwarts. Its a really good beginner deck builder as it strips down the game to the core concepts of a deck builder to begin with. But as you play and win you unlock the next game box (comes with 7 in total and represents the 7 books) which has more cards, villains and mechanics so by the 7th game you're fighting off multiple villains while trying to destroy the horcruxes as well as building up a deck of powerful spells and allies using your favourite character from the book (who each have a unique ability) Bought it for my wife as she loves harry potter and couldn't believe how much fun we've had with it
Clank! is not only my favorite deck-building game, but my favorite board game of all-time! Side-note: JESUS CHRIST, ADAM, HOW OLD IS YOUR COPY OF DOMINION!? Man, those cards look rough!
My favorite deck-builder is Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle. It's a co-op game in which you're all put against the expected baddies from the books, and there's various effects that mess with your life total. You then play your turn buying cards, healing your teammates, attacking the baddies. If you ever lose your life points, you are stunned; discard half of your cards and add a death counter to the area you're in, but the next turn you get restored back to full health. Accumulate enough death counters and the baddies win. Oh, and each player assumes a character role, and each one has a unique effect. If you're REALLY into HP, you'll appreciate all of the nuances the makers put into it. So much fun, highly recommend.
You really love to see how passionate Adam is with Board games. I can imagine it's a safe space for him, seeing as how shit covering the often infuriating world of Pro-Wrestling, especially WWE can be, and how it can drive you mad. Board games are almost always a great time with people you care about. Happy for Adam. :)
Aeon's End and Legendary Encounters are still the two best co-op deck builders to date in my book. Not sure if anything will ever dethrone Aeon's End at this point.
Quest For El Dorado is a great shout... It has some of the best card drafting ideas around. Great Western Trail is great, and even though it doesn't feel like a deck builder, you better believe I am making the greatest deck of cows you've ever seen!
The 'no shuffling' rules of Aeon's end is super cool. For players with dexterity issues shuffling cards can be a really cumbersome affair and can take away from the game itself. It also (like you addressed) can take away some of the randomness and allow players big brain the pants off it!
The DC deck building is my favorite and it’s so sad to see a pic of it used but it not making the list. The variations it allows with its expansions. Competitive or co-op, different characters put focus in different strategies, specific 1v1 versions, promos, a Multiverse box that puts everything together. It’s a true shame it wasn’t included. The Cryptozoic engine is just so good.
Surprised Arctic Scavengers isn't on this list. It takes combat and makes it fun with multiple friends! Also really enjoy Valley of the Kings which adds great set collection elements to a deckbuilding game too.
I saw the clip of Mage Knight in your intro and got excited 😂 Great list! Star Realms is a firm favourite for me; I’ve been tempted by both Legendary Encounters and Aeons End for some time but they both seem super pricey for what they are... hopefully one day I’ll get to try
Mage Knight is a different kind of beast. 😅 Legendary is very good, but to me it feels like a campaign driven game, lower replayability. I've got the Firefly one, awesome game, horrible art! Imho i think you should go for Aeons End. Even the base game packs so much game for your money! Endless challenge combinations; different mages x different nemesis x different base cards (nemesis) x different market cards. There's even an expedition version or a legacy version, if that's your thing.
I just stumbled onto this channel with no interest in board games. Now in going through every video and wish I had mates into the same thing as not gonna lie so many games you've shown seem like a lot of fun!
Dominion is still the best deck builder on the market and it keeps getting better with each expansion. Also, how does Ascension miss the top 10 list? That game is so good!!!
Great list. Surprised I didn't see Tyrants of the Underdark on it. It's my favorite deck builder currently. It's an area control deck builder. Plays great with 2 and will play up to 4. Highly recommend it.
Base Dominion is number 10 on this list. Dominion plus expansion is easily number 1. I came to Dominion late; it's one of the last big name deck-builders I've played. I loved how it's deck-building crystalized to its purest form. On another note, Ascension is excellent and I see Shards of Infinity as a better version of Star Realms. Great list!
Tyrant of the underdark is one of my go to game for when i want to introduce people that want to try something a bit more meatier than mainstream game, and even my board game club loved it when i intruduced them to this game. It also have good deck-builder introducing mechanics, like gaining points for banishing cards out of your deck teaching you the concept of deck thinning. I have some other game that are good bridge game like smash up and king of toky, but tyrant of the underdark is the one i have the most success with to catch new initiates for the non mainstream board game gods. The theme is mature enough and easy to teach, around 80% of the rules are on the last page of the manual.
I did start with Dominion, and also played Ascension quite early on. I tried Resident Evil and Star Realms once or twice. But many of the ones I've played since have been Cryptozoic (DC Deckbuilding, Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Street Fighter). My family also enjoys 7 Wonders. I just love the concept of deckbuilding games.
DC is my favorite deck builders. Street Fighter was my first, then realize how much better it could have been. When I started picking up DC and their expansions.
To people new to deckbuilding games, try out the digital version of Star Realms and Ascension for free. I downloaded Ascension on my iPad many years ago and I fell in love with the genre big time. Especially as a kid who couldn't afford MTG boxes.
I like Flying Frog's "Dark Gothic" based off of their "A Touch of Evil" board game. Players play as one of the game's heroes, each with different starting hands and abilities and try to defeat three of the supernatural menaces threatening the town of Shadowbrooke, with each threat being more dangerous than the previous one. It's cooperative, with the added incentive of the ultimate winner being the one with the most points from the various cards you acquire throughout the game
I love card games and I love rogue-like video games. A while ago I realized that they are basically both applications of the same concept of randomized encounters from a big but nevertheless limited pool of potential outcomes. Deckkbuilders make that even more obvious. I guess Slay the Spire is rather explicit about that, but unfortunately I haven't gotten around to it yet, as in the last while I haven't really been playing video games and before that I was stuck on the absolutely excellent Hades.
One good thing about Quacks that you missed is that you are not waiting for others to take their turns. You all make your potions at the same time. The only waiting is if you are one of the first people to stop pushing your luck and even then it's only normally a minute or so.
I'm surprised the 2nd deckbuilder isn't on this list. Arctic scavengers. Its brilliant because cards you dont use go to fight other players and man the bluffing is so tense.
Just a small rules add-on for Quacks of Quedlinburg: Your cauldron only explodes when the number of the cherry bombs EXCEEDS 7. If it’s 7, you’re still safe. Great video though, I love deckbuilders and own Star Realms, Clank, Quacks & Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle. I think the nice thing about them is the sense of progression you get over the course of the game as you get more and more powerful - even if you lose in the end.
Please please bring Aeon’s End to Board Game Club one day. I would love to see you guys play through legacy or one of the other stories. Or even just do some one off Nemesis fights. No matter what, I would watch the shit out of it.
honestly. really happy that slay the spire was mentioned cause holy FUCK that game is good. hope it gets a physical board game incarnation someday which i dont know how it would work but i ALREADY WANT IT
Heads up: the Clank Legacy is an entire game, not an expansion. The picture you showed is four characters with different starting decks, and adds no legacy elements
Deck building games I like that you didn't mention Cthulhu the deck building game - It's co -op deck building and your currency for cards is also what you're using to deal damage to the creatures and gods. Rules can be a bit unclear for newcomers but once you get them down it's fun. I liked it more than Legendary Encounters Ausonia - you use gems to both buy cards and activate abilities on cards you have. The Veil - basically Star Realms but everyone gets their own starting deck and their own separate market, with cards and sometimes whole card types your opponent will never have access to.
Quarriors is only of my favorite pool building games, surprised it didn't make the cut. Another lesser known gem is the Star Trek deck builder by Bandai. The Original Series version fixes some of the balance issues from the TNG version.
I don’t know if it fits this list but boss monster is a hell of a good time with my friends. I bought pretty much everything so it has infinite replay value.
Valley of the Kings and the rest of the deck-deconstruction subgenre(including Flamme Rouge) also deserve a mention. Especially Flaming Pyramids & Abandon All Artichokes, for being Uno-level accessible, and the latter I think is a better gateway deckbuilder than Dominion(it teaches otherwise unintuitive concepts like deck-pruning), probably even among top 10 gateways of the past & next decade
YES! Don't go through the trauma of thinking you look after your cars well enough, and they only get a bit grubby after a few years....only for one of your mates to scrape one across a table with some salt on it, or bend it, or spill their sodding drink on it.
And it’s always the guy that just reached for the Doritos that he himself brought to game night. Don’t get me wrong, I love my friends but they sure can be bastards
@@ForeverFever49 I’ve got probably a majority of the sets. I love this game but nobody I know has ever seen or heard of it lol and I very rarely see people talking about it
Adam, have you played "Shadowrun Crossfire"? It's a crazy fun (and also crazy hard) co-op deck builder that's also legacy with you making your own character and buying skills for them using karma you earn from completing missions! I love it and I'd highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys the Shadowrun universe!
I do like all 3 of the Realms games. Star Realms I play a lot and Hero Realms is a lot of fun as well. Cthulhu Realms I would urge others who have tried the other Realms games but not tried that one to give it a go as it is very good indeed and requires a slightly different strategy to win.
Personal List Domination - classic/simpler/many expansions Star Realms - Cheap/faster only around 30 mins or less/ some expansions/ only 2 player unless buying more decks ($59.99) For Glory - Seems awesome/ longer times between fights/ alot of build up throughout the whole game. Undaunted - Military Game/ Unforgiving/ Seems really fun though/ A little simpler, despite many steps/ a little tedious sounding Legendary Encounters (or other themes) - Looks insanely fun/ seems COMPLECATED/ so many themes, I think that's awesome/ Probably a very long game. Quacks Of Quedlinberg - Seems fun, I think it isn't the coolest one but I wouldn't mind playing it.
No DC deckbuilding? Its crazy fun with a plethora of options for gamestyles and expansions to build to your favorite modes its awesome with a multiverse mode that combimes all sets you have into a long but crazy fun experience

Mystic Vale is a good call... Very underrated. Lost Ruins of Arnak is another game that plays similar to Dune Imperium (and I enjoyed more).
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle Is one of the best deck builders around, that game shocked me with how good it is. I was expecting a simple cash grab trying to capitalize off the IP. But no man, they put serious time and thought into game design and theme. Love it.

I agree. It’s also a great game for Harry Potter fans. The cards do a go job bringing out the Harry Potter theme.
But a caveat for anyone reading this. The card art is movie stills. If you have a bias towards the book art keep that in mind.
It's an amazing gateway campaign co-op indeed, but doesn't its deckbuilding side lack deck-pruning and market-unclogging?

No love for mah boi Ascension 😢 why am I the only one that plays it?
I bought the year two set and played it all throughout college. Probably my favorite deck builder
@@ForeverFever49 I’ve got probably a majority of the sets. I love this game but nobody I know has ever seen or heard of it lol and I very rarely see people talking about it
You should do a list of board games where you play the Villian. Boss Monster is what come to mind.
@ 6:38 Reminds me of "Dont wake Daddy."
Have you played the Lord of the Rings deck builder? It's pretty fun and easy to pick up for newer players
If you like Legendary Encounters, possibly check out the Arkham Horror/Lord of the rings LCG. Best mechanic storytelling I've experienced.
I do like all 3 of the Realms games. Star Realms I play a lot and Hero Realms is a lot of fun as well. Cthulhu Realms I would urge others who have tried the other Realms games but not tried that one to give it a go as it is very good indeed and requires a slightly different strategy to win.
Yall should try Moonrakers by IV Studios, its a deck builder with negotiation.
Personal List
Domination - classic/simpler/many expansions
Star Realms - Cheap/faster only around 30 mins or less/ some expansions/ only 2 player unless buying more decks
($59.99) For Glory - Seems awesome/ longer times between fights/ alot of build up throughout the whole game.
Undaunted - Military Game/ Unforgiving/ Seems really fun though/ A little simpler, despite many steps/ a little tedious sounding
Legendary Encounters (or other themes) - Looks insanely fun/ seems COMPLECATED/ so many themes, I think that's awesome/ Probably a very long game.
Quacks Of Quedlinberg - Seems fun, I think it isn't the coolest one but I wouldn't mind playing it.
Sorry I had a stroke watching the state of your dominion cards
Would love to see a video on the best games to get people into games.
Star Realms over Diminion ANY day. I'm glad For Glory is getting the love it deserves.
My wallet quivers everytime I click on these videos. 🥺
Funny, I watch them for the smug validation of already owning the game he mentions.
Not sure if it was discounted because the ‘cow deck’ is only one part of a wider engine but Great Western Trail would definitely have made my list.
No DC deckbuilding? Its crazy fun with a plethora of options for gamestyles and expansions to build to your favorite modes its awesome with a multiverse mode that combimes all sets you have into a long but crazy fun experience
two I like are Penny Arcade and a Lord of the Rings deckbuilder. However, my kids won't play deckbuilders so I don't get to play them much.
Villagers is a must for any collection I highly recommend it.
I have to give it to DC Metal. It's fun as hell and can get pretty insane with the right set up
just a quick addendum/correction:
Star Realms has a 4-Player mode with 2 copies of the game I believe
I would also HM "Vikings gone wild" 😁
