In the Coraline book, Other Mother makes the Others out of clay. When Coraline stumbles onto Other Father in the basement, she describes a scent like strong vinegar coming from the basement.
So Vinegar is often used when sculpting clay as a thinning agent. Which means that Other Mother got so angry or cruel with Other Father thay she poured Vinegar on him so he would melt. Which explains the state that Coraline finds him in.
I make pottery for a living and we usually use vinegar to thicken clay, not thin it?

@@anonymous_jugmixing vinegar with slip thickens it, it’s the opposite of a deflocculant. I’m literally in my studio listening to this video and mixing casting slip as we speak lol. vinegar definitely does not thin slip. darvan 7, water, or sodium silicate does.

I recently read the book for the first time! While I know the majority opinion finds the book scarier than the movie, I can’t bring myself to the same conclusion
Like, OBVIOUSLY the actual Other World creatures are more creepy and dangerous by themselves in the book. But even as an adult the movie gives me such a terrifying sense of dread that the book can’t because of how vile the *deceit* of the Other World was compared to the book. The Other World in the book doesn’t even try to hide how disturbing and dangerous it is, but in the movie scenario?
Imagine a visage of your neighbors, your loved ones, your *family* , give you everything you ask for, every ounce of love and joy you need, only to push such a disturbing kind of bodily and emotional harm on you? That the people you love become twisted and misshapen mockeries of themselves want to tear you apart so suddenly?

Everyone is scared of different things and different themes! You seem to be more scared of deceit and emotional (and/or disturbing) factors than straight up monsters, whilst many who find the book scarier found the descriptions themselves haunting..every spooky and scary thing was made 10 fold with amazing descriptions that really made you picture it and feel for Coraline along with fearing what it would be like to be in her position; there's also that helpless alone kind of fear from the books..no deceit but scary things and having no one to get help from and no one to turn towards..it's a different kind of fear that many have, the fear of being alone and no one wanting to help when you really need it. I personally have a bit fear of the dark, and imagining a world where no one would believe me, my parents went missing, and I was on the verge of being killed honestly scares me.
I've always found books to be more intimate than movies personally..I can really picture the scenes and imagine what it'd be like to be the characters when I'm reading a book but a movie takes all that out as I'm physically watching it, a movie can be just as scary but I just don't get that deep feel for them like I would a book as I have nothing to imagine or picture (plus in my experience books usually are better than their movie versions, movies usually cut out a lot obv for time save..can't have a 5 hour long movie or more lol but this ends in the movie just not hitting as hard as the book for me! Plus a movie cannot compare to the detailed descriptions and exploring of the book, I still enjoy movies but i'm a huge book person)
I mean if you have parents like mine you don't have too imagine. Abusive people flip on a dime that way.
I hate any weird stuff with eyes. Weird eye colors and of course the buttons so...ack
I actually prefer the movie. I feel like it does a better job of making the Other Mother seem intelligent enough to create a world Coraline might ACTUALLY want to stay in - it's a much more believably enticing world. Also, I prefer the pacing of the movie taking place over several days - it's good for building tension.

I feel the same and to me the false bright exterior of the other world was much creepier than somewhere that was creepy in general

I'm the opposite. I like the Beldam that knows its prey enough to know how to lure it, but cant perfectly recreate a paradise because it's so inherently different than a person. Like, we can't really measure its intelligence by our standards, but danger is universal, and the book does such a good job of describing that instinctual feeling that something is wrong, but it isn't immediately obvious what. Like the amygdala knows something the rest of the brain is still trying to catch up with. That's just my opinion though lol
I think they way Coraline treats Wybie vs Other Wybie is very realistic to an angsty kid her age. Wybie is loud and awkward, not paying much attention to her, and overall not a great experience for a kid with family drama that just moved in. Other Wybie, on the other hand, is quiet and he listens to her. He's still weird, but its not as aggressively weird as before. It's much easier to attach to the ideal version of someone, hence why she treats Other Wybie with more kindness and patience than she does real Wybie, so her reaction to seeing Wybie again after being saved by Other Wybie is pretty realistic. Coraline was expecting her parents, but all she got was the loud and somewhat bitter reminder of the thing she had gotten attached to. Of course, how she treated Wybie wasn't right, but after all she went through, the danger, being faced with the fact that her savior couldn't go with her and would likely get hurt, etc, her actions were pretty understandable. She's just a preteen/teen thrust into some horrifying, eldritch-esc nightmare.
As for who I like most, it's a pretty close tie. In my mind, they're practically the same character. Two sides of the same coin, each with the same ability to act like the other. I'm sure Wybie has his quiet moments, like when he went back to retrieve the doll. He was quiet, shy, and a lil scared. Yeah, he still talked, but he wasn't the awkward ball of energy that he usually is. Same with when Coraline gets attacked by the Beldam's hand. He's more quiet, more serious. In fact, I don't think he talked at all until *after* the hand was thrown down the well. He acted quite a lot like Other Wybue did when he was saving Coraline from the mirror and the Beldam. As for Other Wybie, you can see that the guy has things he wants to say. To talk to Coraline, to cheer, to warn. However, his mouth was 'fixed' shut, and when he could finally open it, he had to remain quiet so he could help Coraline escape. The only line we get from him is a brief, "shh," before he takes Coraline to the door and shoves her through. All in all, a great representation of Real Person vs Ideal Person where they're the same, but opposite.
Tl;dr - Coraline is just a kid going through scary shit and is bound to lash out, and Wybie and Other Wybie are equal in my eyes.
Fully agree! Adding on to this, Coraline had just moved and was still missing her old friends upon first meeting Wybie; she definitely wasn’t in the mindset of making new friends. Hell, we hear her actively talk about her plans to invite her friends to a garden party in the summer throughout the movie (which is months away btw! The movie takes place around President’s Day, late February). Moving is hard for a kid, the feelings of leaving everything you know behind is akin to grieving. When she first meets Wybie she’s deep in the denial stage. She doesn’t want a “new” friend, she wants HER friends. The friends that know her already and respect her boundaries. The friends that are several hundred miles away…
@@StellarComet Yeah! I can't believe I completely forgot about that part, it's a whole thing and is part of the reason why she's so excited about being in the other world. They may only be in a picture, but her friends are there! They can talk! But, alas, tis another trick and more salt in the wound when they also attempt to pressure her into getting the buttons in her eyes.
The Other Mother making Wybie not talk reminds me of people who claim animals are better than children because they can't talk. The concept of liking something more because it's unable to speak is so creepy to me. It fit the story perfectly.
I love how after so many years since the release of both the book and the film, we still watch/read it over and over again learn more things and dissect the lore even further. Great video!
I remember being seven or eight and telling my family that the reason Coraline is my favourite movie is because people can talk and theorize about it forever. It’s so intricate and artistic. I’m 19 now, it’s been over 10 years and I was right.
It's so timeless and thankfully got my daughter inspired with the book and movie. This story will never got old, even the morals in the story are still sound today.
Read the book every September and then watch the movie every October. After I watch mean girls on October 3rd. Lol
One thing I’ve noticed about the movie representing the Other Mother as a spider. Her button eyes have four holes. Which effectively gives her eight eyes like a spider.
And a giant web floor...
One of my favourite little details I've noticed between the other mother and Coraline's real mom is that the other mother's nose isn't crooked like the real one or Coraline's (which I take to mean it's a genetic trait, an "imperfection" in the other mother's "eyes" so she keeps her own straight nose despite being fully disguised)
I have a suspicion that some of the changes to material (such as swapping blood with sand, or making things less goopy) may have been, at least in part, to make the animation easier to work with. Stop motion is a difficult medium to incorporate fluids into. It also seems pretty obvious some changes were to keep the rating down and expand the audience. It's easier to market to a younger audience without gore.
I’m pretty sure they really did just do it so they had age appropriate stuff - everything is very impressive…

@@smazberry - Clearly they did try. She turned on the shower and, well, we saw how that turned out. At least we could tell it was supposed to be water, but not the most convincing. I'm sure they would have preferred to avoid as much of that as possible.
I absolutely LOVE the scene where the other mother is asking Coraline to sew buttons in her eyes at the dinner table. For just a couple seconds, the other mother is placed PERFECTLY in front of the antlers on the wall, and she looks like she has horns, like the devil. The other father does not, showing he is only being controlled by her and doesn’t want to hurt Coraline. He is merely a puppet. I love stop motion because every little frame is intentional. It’s such a wonderful, subtle form of foreshadowing, but it’s still SO frightening when you catch it. ESPECIALLY given that right next to the antlers on the wall are silhouette portraits of the three ghost children - which is also purposefully curated into that frame. I love this movie so much. Brilliant filmmaking.
A bit of science trivia. The mushrooms of the fairy ring, as described in the book, are most likely scleroderma citrinum, or common earthball. It's a species of puffball mushroom native to England that, to quote Wikipedia, "(when mature) bursts on contact or impact, releasing a cloud of dust-like spores into the surrounding area." Hence the smell when Coraline trod on them.
I feel a little bit sad that Coraline has been so fully uncovered of it's mysteries as this has, but then again I'm happy to fully understand one of my favorite childhood stories. Thanks abitfrank
So its been years since ive read the book or seen the movie but one thing that really stuck with me was the food. In the book coraline was weary about the other mothers cooking then when she went back she had brough apples and refused to eat the food that was offered to her. In the movie coraline eats the food with no problem and even accepted it after going back.... ive always thought that the food might have something to do with the stay in the other world, the book and movie are much different but there was a big difference of acceptance of the other world between the 2
Interestingly, they used to say that if you go into the Fairy Realm DO NOT EAT THE FOOD. If you eat the food you can’t leave the Fairy Realm
its always reminded me a lot of the tale of persephone and hades and the pomegranate
As far as a lot of these theories go, lets consider first and foremost that Neil Gaiman wrote this book. Yknow, the same guy who did Sandman, American Gods, and others. Its very, very likely that all of these things are true. He's an absolute madlad of an author, and we know he does his research.

What if the Other Mother herself is a manifestation of the possible creature that was created to originally create a sense of comfort. Besides, the beast couldn’t show itself because to look upon an eldritch horror would drive a mere mortal completely insane. It would need a way to lure its prey without them going crazy so, manifest something more comprehensible and familiar
Also, Coraline can’t talk to rats because she rolled a 1 when trying to cast Speak to Animals

the hidden monsters like the rats, fog, and corridor feel like much more powerful and grand threats than the other mother, who is a threat on a more individual level of specifically targeting each individual child
I obviously love the entire cat theorie, but I also enjoy the Idea of it just being a cat. Like along the lines of "all cats can travel between worlds". This was always verry intriguing to me as a kid because cats do seem to appear and disappear out of no where. We always had cats living in and around our house, that we would feed but never own. But that might just be the small village lifestyle. Still when ever I wouldn't see a particular cat for a ling time I'd just think "probably just went tru a portal".

I feel like no one mentions about the bell dam that a couple characters say “maybe she wanted to love something that wasn’t herself” and even the ghost kids say it I think. Plus there’s a lot of things that subtlety allude to a death in the attic. Also anyone else notice the ghost kids halos? They all have different symbols :0

In the book, the “Corridor beast” was always something more physical and present than the whole “The corridor is the mouth/throat of a giant beast” But that might have just been my personal fears bleeding into that perception. (I’m not so much of a “I’m scared of the dark because I can’t see where I am.” person, but a “I’m scared of the dark because I don’t know what can see ME.”)
It always seemed to me that
The Thing in The Corridor was like a giant bear or Big Cat that was sloooowly stalking Coraline when it realizes that she is traversing repeatedly between the Other World and her own. Kind of like walking through a bear’s cave or a snake’s burrow on the way to somewhere else. I agree with the “Other Mother=Parasite” theory, though in my opinion the Other World is kind of a pocket dimension that the Other Mother created, and that she used the “Thing’s” passageway as a kind of bridge to and from the real world. The Thing controls the corridor, and it wants Coraline INSTEAD of letting the Other Mother get her.
Big same on the "scared of the dark" thing. Biiiiiiig same.
When I read, “I’m scared of the dark because I don’t know what can see ME,” I went completely still. I mean, that’s _why_ people are afraid when they can’t see in the dark-you’re vulnerable.

I always thought the portal Coraline goes through is the mouth of an ancient demon. The Beldam sold her soul to this demon and it swallowed her up. They both need to eat children to survive. The rats are their familiars.

Well an unrealistic mutation due to radiation… sounds familiar… like many comic book heroes, so maybe in the same fashion bobinsky also mutated powers to communicate with spirits etc. 🤷🏻♀️

I don't have time to watch all of this at once, but I want to throw in my opinion that her being so smitten with the other world in the movie always creeped me out SO MUCH! It very much felt like how real abusive relationships with parents can feel. First you believe them, believe in them... and before you know it you realize you only wanted to believe them. The signs were there all along, and as you notice that, the illusion falls apart around you.
And even after everything they've done to you, they still mix in those sweet words. The kind advice. Trying to make you doubt yourself and your judgement one last time.

Just wanted to say that there's a slight error in 21:57 - Coraline has the dream about the beldam wanting the key before the garden party not after, as the garden party is the last scene in the film. We know this since she tells Wybie that she'll help explain everything to his grandmother after they defeat the bedlam's hand, and then begin to do so at the garden party. Thought i'd point that out!
During the Cat theory, I would like too add the Cheshire cat into this little portal traveling kitty cat club, the Cheshire cat can go between the real world and wonderland, it is often disappearing or shape shifting, it is known to be a trickster and to love playing with people by pointing them in the wrong direction or giving a riddle. The theory goes on, but Id love to see a video on it :)

Fun fact: One of the reviews from other authors on the back of the book comes from one Lemony Snicket (not Daniel Handler, Lemony Snicket) and he refers to it as onw of the most horrifying things he's experienced

In terms of the differences between the book and the movie, the one that really intrigues me and really creeps me out is the fact that in the book, the tunnel is a living thing. Your theory on what the corridor is and what kind of/part of a beast it could be is one of my favorites. I think that was one of the first videos from this channel I ever watched. I’d like to think it’s some kind of eldritch being. That would be really freaky.

The thing that got me is this corridor is hidden, and built under/behind the walls of a house. It seems more like the house was built to hide it, and keep it imprisoned. So maybe people in the past had summoned it like a lovecraftian horror of space, and t hen realizing what it was able to do built this home to keepo it imprisoned, and feed it to make sure it did not go on a rampage.

I was just thinking about the tunnel/well/esophagus/worm hole.. and could it be she is actually running further INTO the belly of the beast? It starts cold, musty, earthy.. then winds and whispers pick up (like moving deeper into a cave with echos?)... Then it's warm and yielding with a fine downy fur, like... an opening to something hot and alive? ...then hot and wet and... like the hot mouth of a beast?
Hm... or, maybe there is something in ancient celtic myths that matches her journey to or from the Other World (*not the under world)? Which, coincidentally is said to be under the sea...

I've just realised that the beldam's words might indicate that she interred/entombed her mother but didn't kill her and she may still not be dead in there. Spooky.
I'm very tired and definitely lacking brain cells right now (as well as only being halfway through the video), but here's my thoughts on the rat thing:
I think most of their chants are directed at the other mother. "Fall" could not only refer to power, death, etc... But - and hear me out here - what if it was meant literally when they said "We were here before you fell"? What if... the other mother fell down the well, and that's how she ended up in the other world? I very much agree with the theory that the well might be a portal of some sort. But, unlike the door, it goes only one way.
The rats were there before the other mother fell down the well. They were also there before she rose to power.
There's many reasons to believe the other mother ended up in the other world, and didn't originate there. She wants to escape, and the door is the only way she knows how to. (all that would make the hand and key both falling down the well even worse btw)
They were under her control but will eventually rise to power themselves and take revenge.
And this is a bit of a stretch, but the way they keep mentioning their tails makes me think of one thing: RAT KINGS
"Rat king" refers to rat tails getting tangled up in each other, forming a gross mass of rats. This would also be "supported" by the other Mr. B, and the biggest rat ending up on top of the rat pyramid before they speak. There's even a relatively well-known quote saying "finally, there is the Pope, the king of rats right at the top."

I think there’s a play that’s much closer to the book than the movie. Idk for sure but, aeons ago, when I first discovered the movie on TV, I tried looking for the soundtrack and came across something like a Broadway album that had the song of the rats. Came off as less creepy than more goofy though

Absolutely loved your presentation and reading. As for the corridor i feel like Coraline is walking beside a giant rat / old god. She felt its mouth towards the end of the corridor, when she was almost out. Hence the rats reffering to being here before the rise and being here after the fall , they might be associated with some old god.

But you made me bought another edition of Coraline. An illustrated one. And the comics book... My wallet isn't ok with it... But that Coraline edition is beautiful.

I like a lot of the changes in the movie, while the book is creepier and more disturbing its almost too much? I like Coralines agency and how things were manipulated around her. How she was able to make decisions that impacted her and those she loved.

I read the book in school as a kid and begged my step mom to take me to the theatre when the movie came out (she had nightmares lol)

I remember watching the movie at high school, for a Halloween-related English reading assignment, and it wasn’t as scary compared to when I read the book. When I first read the book, I realized that it was more of we see what Coraline sees; because we ARE her. We are on her shoulders, watching what she sees every second. She is alone when she returned from the Other World, when her Other Mother captured her parents. The passage in the book was more horrifying, because it was very old, slow, and also alive. It always gave me the feeling that she was traveling inside the mouth of a creature, then travel down the through and inside the intestines of this rather otherworldly beast.

I read the book as a kid before the movie came out and the creepiest part even though it continued to get creepier but the most alarming part was as soon as the other mother said she wants to sew buttons in her eyes. I didn't know what the book was about so without knowing that's gonna happen it's a lot creepier. Also I knew that a person has to be dead inside to have buttons on there eyes so her sewing buttons in her eyes would mean she would kill her and I totally agreed with Coraline and was glad she never went through with that and was so proud of her for how brave she was the whole book. Also wibi the boy was in the book. idk what this person is talking about
