It's actually a pretty cool story of why Ryan Smith is giving BYU an open check. His dad worked for BYU for many years (~30) as a professor. When his dad got stage 4 throat cancer BYU allowed him to "work from home" and paid him, essentially just to stay home, rest, and get better, and supported the family through those and other hard times in Ryan's family life. Because of that, Ryan says that anything BYU needs they are going to get from him.
Worth noting: that same article you are referencing says that Dybantsa’s father is keeping NIL amounts from AJ, so that he makes the decision regardless of the NIL amount. The implication is that BYU isn’t in the running solely because of NIL. Take that how you will, though.
BYU isn’t going to open the checkbook for any old 5 star recruit. I hear the kids they turned down is insane too. You HAVE to be a culture fit. And BYU has a unique culture.
It's not just the money, the Kevin Young NBA connection is the catalyst for the big change, and the booster money followed when people caught the NBA pipeline vision.
Brody Kozlowski who comes from a long line of BYU athletes was committed to USC, and as soon as Pope left, he flipped to BYU. His mom even works for BYU Athletics, and he still committed elsewhere initially. What does that say about Pope?
@@tommygunn2867 The previous BYU coach had a better win % than Pope. Pope kept the program going at the same pace, but in no way did he get BYU "out of the gutter" lol.
@@jeoffbenzos4959 You must have forgotten all those years you BYU being in the WCC one of the weakest conference. He’s the reason you’re funding is how it is now. He balled out in the Big 12 and took you to the tourney it had been a while
@@tommygunn2867 Pope also coached 4 years in the WCC and had a worse win % than Rose in the WCC. Rose took BYU to 8 NCAA tournaments in 14 years as head coach and Pope took BYU to 2 in 5 years as head coach. And Rose actually won tournament games. Pope had a great year last year, I’m not denying that. But to say BYU was trash and Pope made them good is completely false. And he’s not the reason for BYU’s funding either lol. There’s a reason BYU fans do not miss Pope at all. Him leaving was a blessing in disguise for BYU.
The trick is for those recruiting Mandaquit to offer also to Dybantsa, and vice versa. Currently only BYU offered both. It is not rocket science but I've not heard this talked about much. It's like they did not do research or watch any Dybantsa game.
PROvo!.........LOL This is just my thinking but....price tag aside, whoever comes to BYU must be a good fit. A strong effort will be made to filter out athletes who'll take the money but do not intend to keep the Honor Code. Purposefully recruiting athletes who are a bad fit will not be tolerated. Therefore, when BYU identifies a top recruit who appears to be a good fit, they may be willing to bid higher than other schools to secure them. Scarcity drives up prices and top athletes that will be a good fit at BYU are scarce.
Guys, telling you from a top source that BYU does not offer more than other top programs. They won't get into a bidding war beyond their basic offer. It's the other things that factor into it with NBA coaches, facilities, training staff, etc.
Its the name Kentucky, thats why players go there. Not cause of Pope. Before NIL BYU was not the spot to go. Now its all about the money!! Lets goooo BYU
I will say this and what I heard. All these big name Donors byu has now didn’t believe in Mark Pope and didn’t buy into his idea. With young they are wanting to get this program up and fast. Just need to have the right people at the right time
Yeah. It’s to be expected with an unregulated economy in college basketball. But it’s just new and people will figure out what makes sense. Regulations will come and it’ll improve to some degree

Ryan Smith is not the only money at BYU. There are a lot of under the radar people, including other billionaires, also supporting BYU.

Media always thinks its about NIL. They don’t even know how it works.

When you have a player like AJ your culture means crap, players like AJ creates your culture !!!
I heard from a a guy at byu that there are 4 or 5 billionaires that are supporting byu and a lot of millionaires as well
yup

Basketball season tix are sold out there. I had called to get 2 lower level season tickets, and the upfront amount was going to be >$100k
GO! BYU!!!🎉

Yep. Loved Pope and we all knew he'd leave for UK. What we didn't like was the way he did it. Wish him well, but it's a win-win for both programs!
Ahh, BYU has been selling out well before Dybantsa if he comes. Now, of course, lots of media and shirt sales. 😀

BYU has a lot of rules that top basketball players are not going to want to follow and their religious beliefs may not align with BYU
PROvolone cheese 😂
Dybantsa is about to cost 3 Cooper Flaggs
Why do you guys spout nonsense?
UNC is getting AJ
UNC better come up with the money dinero !!!
The structureless NIL and the methods of byu will ruin college basketball

Teams have been doing this for decades in football and basketball. Now it's a level playing field for teams that didn't pay kids before.
It’s just not BYU other teams are doing this too
You're only upset because in this case it's BYU and not a traditional power throwing money around.
Like the way bama ruined college football?
