    I will call you a geniuse. The reason why I said that is because a geniuse take something complicated and makes it simple. Very well explained sir. I always knew of the modes in music theory but wasnt sure which chords to use over which modes. I need you to develop a pattern or a stategt that can cause the musician to think for themselves and become independent. A strategy that takes you through every stage of a metamorphosis and you grow wings and learn how to fly on your own. Maybe you have, i dont know. This is my first time watching your video sir.

    For improvisation, I find that I get great chordal results by simply placing my left hand fingers on random keys within the scale that are at least a minor third apart. If the chord becomes too stretched, I simply rearrange their order. This way, it is quite a simple procedure to learn the "what" first, and then focus on the theory afterwards to determine precisely what chord has just been played. This method is really easy and fun, and has improved my very mediocre skills on the keys considerably...

    Hey Warren! Please forgive the quick succession of posts; but I want to be as near real time as possible to share the impact of your tutorials on my thinking and growth process. In my opinion, it is only fair that you know (beyond your faith and beyond just trusting) how your giving---not just your living---but your GIVING of time and money to produce these free tutorials is beyond inspiring. I haven't come up with a word to describe what is beyond inspiring! Man, I tell you ... anyway, what I REALLY wanted to share is a few days ago---maybe Thursday or Friday---I was looking at notes I'd written about these seven modes. God is my witness! I restarted working to memorize them. I see it has been a couple of years since this upload. Then today, this video is in queue. About six minutes into the video, I said out loud, "Wait! What?" I replayed it! Awestruck light bulb moment! I am geeked! Is geeked still used? Well, I'm still working with the number system at the moment; but these church modes? Can't wait to get to 'em!

      Hi warren? I just wanted to find out when you are doing an advanced version of this tutorial. This information was so helpful. Very few can teach such things for free. Thank you so much for the work that you are doing. I really appreciate you empowering me. I want to learn more on modes and how to apply them in music. I am an intermediate keyboard player. I hear very nice gospel licks in songs but I find it hard to tell which scale(s) Gospel Musicians use for soloing and which scales apply to which chords. Gospel Musical ideas sound so nice but most Gospel licks do not sound like its just purely the major scale. I will appreciate you doing a tutorial on this or if you already have one please send me the link..

    Question:
    The scales go with certain chords because of shared tones, right?

    • @PianoLessonwithWarren
      @PianoLessonwithWarren  7 лет назад +1

      Brian P. Yes that's correct. When you play an extended chord, just look for the scale(s) that share all the chord tones... this is how you know what scale can be used with a particular chord.

    How do you learn correct fingerings for all the modes in every key though?

    • @PianoLessonwithWarren
      @PianoLessonwithWarren  6 лет назад +2

      Str8representing when you learn the correct fingerings for all major and minor scales you’re realized that most modes have similar fingerings.
      So just focus on mastering the major and minor and everything will fall into place

    • @Str8representing
      @Str8representing 6 лет назад +2

      I already have practiced major, minor, pentatonic, blues, harmonic, melodic, dorian fingerings (fingerings for those I've found in google). I can kinda figure out what would work with any of the 7 modal scales with some experimenting, but one teacher said "The fingering is important because you're building technique. This is not negotiable." So I don't want to mess up doing my own discoveries & possibly develop bad habits. Now I'm stuck knowing how to build the scales, but can't practice :(

    • @PianoLessonwithWarren
      @PianoLessonwithWarren  6 лет назад

      Str8representing one you have the correct finger for majors and minor, you should be all set with the other scales. The fingers are transferable.

    • @Str8representing
      @Str8representing 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks. Maybe this is the reason I can't find fingerings for the rest of the scales.

    • @PianoLessonwithWarren
      @PianoLessonwithWarren  6 лет назад +2

      Str8representing look at the pattern for the modes and you’re realize that the same fingers from the major and minor scales work for the modes. For example, the C major scale fingering works for all the modes derived from the C major scale.

  • @ishalavender6680
    @ishalavender6680 2 года назад

    If I was playing in C Major and had an accidental sharp or flat will that change the mode¿ Are songs composed of various modes within one song? I hope that makes sense.

    Thanks. Please explain the chord progrssion of the modes
    for example: how to deal with the b2 in the Phryg mode. Is the bII a Dominant chord or a SubDominant chord?

      gil regev I'm not understanding this question. The Phrygian modes doesn't have b2.

      Thanks for the qucick answere
      Phrygian is : 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7
      C Db Eb F G Ab Bb
      The chords are: Cm7 ; Dbnaj7 ; Eb7 ; Fm7 ; Gm7(b5) ; Abmaj7; Bbm7
      what are the Tonic SubDominanat and Dominant chords of the Phrygian ?

      My bad, you're correct. The I, iv, V (Cm7, Fm7, G7alt) would the Tonic, Subdominant, and Dominant. The five chord is always dominant so we alter it.

      What about the Dbmaj7 , it has b2. isn't b2 kind of leading tone to the tonic? so, is Dbmaj7 a dominant chord ( although it has a maj7 )?

      gil regev it all depends on the context in which you're using these chords and scales. Modes are mostly used as improvisatory materials over chords. Mostly likely you'd be playing in a major or minor key, then you can do modal mixture to spice things up.
      But with out a context of how you're using this I can't say what is happening

    Great tutorial brother . but I'm confuse you say C dorian scale which has no flats or sharps over C min7 b5 but you changed the scale to C minor scale which has flats for that chord

      I played C Phrygian over the Cm7b5, C Phrygian comes from the Ab major scale, therefore all the notes from Cm7b5 (C, Eb, Gb, Bb) also belongs to the C Phrygian mode. Get it now?
