I have had one for 6 1/2 years and I love it. It doesn’t feel slow to me. I’ll bet that most people who call it slow have never driven one. I traded in an F10 M5 with 200 more horsepower - the i8 is quicker and way more fun to drive. The electric torque comes on instantly and it’s not a heavy car so it makes the most of its power. In 2015 both Car and Driver and Road & Track timed it under 4 seconds to 60, that’s good enough for me. Other cars may be quicker, but we’re in a new paradigm where Hyundais and Kias are beating supercars to 60 so there will always be something that accelerates faster. However, NOTHING else looks like it. After 10 years, the styling is still fresh. At car meets it gets tons of compliments and positive reactions. There aren’t a lot of i8s out there so many people don’t even know what it is, they just think it’s a beautiful car. It’s also very comfortable and easy to drive. You can glide around town in electric mode and then shift into Sport mode and you get a whole different vehicle. It’s wonderful on long trips and overall I’m getting 50 mpg. It’s truly a unique car.
Love this comment thank you for this. But man I yeah bet you get tons of compliments on the car at car meets!! The styling and body lines are my fav things about the car because it was so removed even at the time of beautiful fast cars from back then (I would say even now). Glad you have one bro!! Sounds like you take good care of it too 🔥
100% agree. it has been one of my fav hybrids since it came out 💔 I loved the blue and white body paint on it too, truly a beautiful car so sad it didn't last long 😔
Speaking as an owner of such a beast, I feel like I am more of an authority that both the dreamer and the reviewer/narrator of this video: The i8 is a failure of a car for none of the reasons you have touched on in this video! For starters, you are criticising the acceleration of 0-62 in 4.4 seconds with a return of around 40mpg (UK)!? My previous car to the i8 was a V10 M6 (my previous car to that was a V10 M5 and the previous one to that, the E39 M5) and, in the real world, the i8 is a much quicker car that the M6. And, in the real world, the i8 is quicker than just about any internal combustion engine that doesn't have a trained professional behind the wheel! I quite easily beat a 2012 Porsche 911 Turbo (530bhp) in a traffic light grand prix just outside Gainsborough, Lincolnshire and even he was gobsmacked at how quick the i8 was. He couldn't stop the arse end wiggling from the lights, where I had instant traction thanks to the electric motor driving the front wheels. However, I accept that, if you want to d*ck measure based on top speed, then both the Porsche and the M6 would pummel the i8! HOWEVER! - What you gear heads seem to forget is that there are laws and means of enforcing those laws surround driving at excess speed!. Most UK motorists drive at a speed no faster than 80 mph on the open road because we have a law that dictates that anyone caught exceeding 100mph receives a custodial sentence. Therefore, to suggest the i8 has poor performance because it can "only" do 155mph is ridiculous when considering it's phenominal acceleration. But yes, I accept that the i8 is a failure, but for none of the reasons you state: Many people who have owned one of these cars, and took the opportunity to sell them is because of a shortsightedness when it comes to maintenance and repair. Having owned the S85 V10 BMW's previously, and the fact that they can only average 17mpg at best, with the potential maintenance costs associated with an £80k when new V10 car, I figured, what can possibly go wrong with an i8!? It has a 3 cylinder engine, not a 10 cylinder engine, so a set of spark plugs would be £30 not £130! The sump only holds around 4.5 litres of oil, vs 9.3 on the M5/6 so an oil service would be slashed to half price. The road tax is free on the i8, whereas the M5/6 can cost up to £730 a year to tax! I honestly thought it was a win-win situation, to buy the i8. The possibility of owning what is essentially a supercar, with the running costs of a supermini!.............. Boy was I wrong!. Every time there is a problem with the i8, my wallet goes into panic mode!. The i8 is the only car I have ever taken out a warranty on, and if there are any of you out there who owns one of these cars without a warranty, then you are all fools, because forget rod bearings..........like the problem that often plagues the S85, at least once you pay the £1500 to have them replaced (with aftermarket design) that is a fix and forget expense. I shudder to think what the costs would be of flushing out the aircon system, which is responsible for keeping the high voltage battery cool, if the ac pump craps itself, which does happen on the i8. Trust me, I've had a more relaxing time owning both the V10 M5 and M6 than I have the i8. Thankfully I have got the full comprehensive BMW warranty, which is very expensive (£2k a year), but even so, that means I have to pay stealer servicing fees. I have had a better experience owning the other (24) BMW's than I have the i8, but not for the reasons the reviewer seems to focus on here. The performance is pretty much faultless considering the economy, although a remapped 435d I think offers a more satisfactory experience, knowing that I can service it myself and not be faced with a 5 figure bill should anything fail. The i8 is BMW's Audi A2 moment. You can clearly see that it is one of those cars that BMW will have lost a lot of money on, during it's production. BUT, as much as that may seem like a bonus to the buyer/owner, the reality is, that you won't be able to get aftermarket parts for this car, and BMW will only support it's parts base for a limited amount of time due to the bespoke nature of the car. Don't expect to see front and rear shock absorbers made by third parties for this car, as I've had to shell out for rear shock absorbers already and the only place I could get them was direct from BMW at £900 each! The i8 is like having a supermodel for a girlfriend. Every man wants her, but only the brave can give her the life she demands. Still a fabulous car, but maintenance wise, buyer beware!
I think "tragic" is a good adjective here. I was in Frankfurt at the show when the i8 was unveiled in 2013 and thought it looked amazing. A few years later at a concours show BMW offered the chance to drive any of the cars in their line and of course I tried the i8. It was wonderful...looked gorgeous and I loved the very minimalist but elegant interior. Switching from full-electric to sport mode changed the whole character of the car and it was no slouch. My C6 Corvette (admittedly a bit older) has roughly the same 0-60 time but has around 60 more hp. The 50 mpg fuel consumption reported by i8 owners was not as impressive as I expected for such a high-tech car (the Corvette does 30 on the highway) but when you sat in it you felt you were driving into the future. I would take one today (although I did manage to bang my head on the door twice!).
man yes! I completely agree with you. I thought too it was the most elegant hybrid in its class at the time (not super aggressive but very elegant) - it was so removed from what sports cars were then. that's awesome you tried the i8! 😂 that is unfortunate about your head though. thanks for watching!
I think the reality around i8 is a bit more simple - it was not commercially successful project. BMW claimed that it was more marketing than profit for the brand as the production costs were around sale price
Regardless of performance, this design is as futuristic as a BMW could be, and not these big ass beaver teeth grilles. I still like the m4 beaver teeth grille tho, but not the i4 or iX.
I hope they will give it a i8 motor😂 or more realisticaly a sports coupe with a maybe the b58 and 150hp electric motor with a 0 to 100 around 3.5 secs. Thats what id like to see
i have one, bought it as my daily car as it has a great balance between technology, comfort, looks, economy and performance. Granted it not as fast as other sports and supercars but has enough power for daily use. If it had a V6/V8 twin turbo seen in the M models, this would be next level.
ahhhh I was hoping an owner would see my video and leave their personal opinion!!! dude that's awesome, its a beautiful car in my opinion. I rarely see any on the west coast but when I do, they always catch my eye. Take good car of it bro, its a freaking legend in my book 🔥 💪
@@AdoptedHistory thanks! Personally I feel like it’s a perfect daily car for someone like me (no kids, in their 20s). Other cars I’ve tested as a daily were a 911 and a r8

Bro started the whole story from ww1 😮
Had to take it wayyyyyyyy back lol
This is still the best looking bmw coupe ever, shame the performance didn’t match the styling

Nah, It needed a straight six twin turbo and a V8 engine option from the start.
Or to really REALLY save it, it needed Jesus ⛪️ 🤧
By far my favorite bmw
same here bro 🔥

still my fav bmw of alllllll time
how tf doest this video has such litle viwes, it deserves much more.
thank youuuu 🔥
Great Car the I8
I actually thought it was a SICK car. saw the other day, I drooled lol
If only the back of the i8 was prettier. I don’t think it matches the rest of the car at all, it looks like it’s squished
we're gonna have to have a talk with the design team of bmw, boys
Liked the video

mannn I was so into their design for the i8 - no beaver vibes with that car 🦫
They could've just given it a B58 and people would be happy, who did they try to appeal to with a supercar design with the engine of a ford focus?
Makes me wonder 💭 🤔

It's a mini in a dress. No wonder no-one bought it lol
I read that as "it's in a mini dress" and was like 🤔
Bruh, the i8 failed because it was electric. It needed a v8, v10, or v12.
Hybrid, but I get the point
