As light passes through the prism, it slows and bends, but different wavelengths bend at different angles. This separates light into different wavelengths, forming a rainbow of colors. The wavelengths of visible light that an object reflects or transmits determine the color that the object appears to the human eye.

What Is Dispersion of Light?
When white light is passed through a glass prism it splits into its spectrum of colours (in order violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red) and this process of white light splitting into its constituent colours is termed as dispersion.
Rainbows are formed by the dispersion of light & reflection (not total internal reflection) from drops of water. The rainbow color sequence can be analyzed by drawing a ray diagram of the refraction of sunlight inside water drops.
