Who am I?
I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 16 years and been singing since I was 17. I teach from my own studio and via Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. Lady Gaga's songs are a little more "easy to interpret". They both write great songs, but on lyrics I must say Sia wins in my book! ❤️❤️❤️🤩🤩🤩😘☺️
What I really appreciate about Gaga is that she goes into a lot of different genres including metal (with Metallica) and jazz.
Sia sung rock too and her first album is experimental/jazz. The second one, Healing Is Difficult has also jazz influences

I love Gaga but Sia has the power to make me emotional every time I hear her! she's AMAZING!!!
The annoying part of this is that I've always felt this battle video seems to choose some of Gaga's weaker performances of the songs performed - Lady Gaga can do so much better than showcased here. In terms of the clips used, Georgina hits the nail on the head - the clips chosen to go against eachother seemed quite unrelated therefore provided an uneven playing field in terms of what constitutes a fair battle. Generally, both singers are fantastic; Sia' s voice is so unique and Gaga's technique is usually flawless. Both artists have some of the most powerful pipes in the industry today and deserve major respect.
Omg same I absolutely hate the popcrush sia best vocal compilation it's just some of the most popular performances thrown together and it's used in like all of the vocal battles, also no one includes performances from her tour which are muuuuuch better than these random performances

The thing is Sia can hit her notes and keep control because she stands still in her performances. Gaga always has some type of movement going on.

Gaga’s version of “what’s goin on” was awesome. She has all the range for that song. And her flourishes were very Annie Lennox. And she’s definitely cosplaying some Elton John realness.
Edit: Omg, Lady Gaga’s Gypsy is probably one of my favorite songs of hers. Such a deep, beautiful, emotional song. And that era was clearly a good one for her. Both are amazing performers.

Sia is raw emotion.
Sia’s diction is a choice not an evolution. That’s why it’s inconsistent. It’s a character expression. It depicts rawness and emotion in her own unique style. Similar to how you used to think growl’s were mistakes. This is intentional.

@@m1sh474 she’s not really mumbling. if you listen to her a lot then it gets really really easy to understand her. it’s like listening to someone with a thick accent, it just takes some adjustment.
I love Sia's voice it's unique. Her live voice & audio voice is the same. There are a lot of singers out there that sound completely different live.
Also I think Sia puts a lot of passion into her music ... she beens through so much... her boyfriend got killed, she used drugs & alcohol, she suffers with the same genetic condition as I have EDS, she has bipolar etc.
She has also wrote many songs for other artists eg Diamonds - Rihanna, perfume - Brittany Spears, Flashlight - Jesse J, Radioactive - Rita Ora etc.
I prefer emotional Sia’s voice..

I think that Sia has a more pleasant tone. If not for her intentional breaks, and tension in her voice a lot of the time, that would be more obvious.
Its just 30% of Sia's best.

Lady Gaga's technique is objectively better and sustainable.
Sia, while she has an amazing voice, can't keep it up forever with her technique. Compare her live performances now to several years ago, and the difference is noticeable. She sings Chandelier in a much lower key than she used to.

Wow 2 absolutely amazing awe inspiring vocals. Gaga wins technique by a mile but sia still has that quality to send me into some tranquil emotive state.
I think I always feel the emotion behind every song Gaga sings. I always smile and feel everything she's singing about, like she's singing it to me. Gaga, Aretha and Stevie Nicks are the only singers that have ever been able to do that to me.

Agreed and Alanis Morissette for me as well. When I saw her on her Jagged Little Pill Tour in 95 I was instantly floored. Her raw vocals, emotions and lyrics pierced my chest and I've been a fans since. I've been to all of Gagas tours and they've been outstanding.

As a Sia and Gaga Fan, I can give u more and better live perfromance balanced clips of these great artists, and well balanced than the one u let u picked and showed to u, but actually this was biased, as u are a vocal coach which u are more educated with techniques, so technique wise is Gaga, Uniquess is Sia, all I can say this is perfectly imbalanced.

Can't judge from these clips at all. Most people who produce comparison videos focus a lot on the loud belting/shouting parts of the performances. If you can do that apparently you're the winner.
Shouting is not technique at all. I can shout with ease with no vocal training. It doesn't sound pleasant whoever is doing it and should be used by singers rarely for dramatic effect.
What about vibrato? Falsetto? Tone? Pitch? Range? Where's the dynamics?
Is not good enough for professional coaches judging professional vocalists.
Shouting is more for blues and rock. Shouting is required for Something's Got A Hold Of Me by Etta James.
Shouting is a technique because it requires diction, power and sustainability. Beth Hart at nearly 50 can do what Robert Plant was unable to do starting in his 30s. Most military drill instructors can't outshout Beth Hart. She just has so much power that she doesn't need to strain her voice. Beth Hart covered a song called I'll Take Care of You with a different musical style than the original. Miley Cyrus covers the Beth Hart version. Miley is obviously straining to get the power Beth Hart has just normally singing.
orlock20 powerful belting should IMO only be part of a singers skill set. I for one do not want to hear too much of it even when with good technique ant maintaining pitch and tone. There are other elements in a good vocalists repertoire. We need to consider these when judging the quality of a singer.

I prefer Sia's singing because Gaga sometimes sounds like a baritone trying to sing high notes.
It’s quite obvious for me that the person who made this video was intending to show Sia’s best performances against Gaga’s weakest ones. I actually love them both, but Gaga’s technique is way more on point and well-trainned. :)

No other vocalist besides sia brings me to tear just by singing.
Sia doesn't have a good technique because good techniques are overrated. The kind of song sia sings will be boring with "good techniques". I especially love sia because of her vocal cracks/break.
I don't listen to gaga much but from this video I can already tell she have a good vocal technique but not so much uniqueness.

Sia’s my absolute favorite singer.
Notice how Gaga would never just stand in front of a microphone. She is always at the very least playing a piano or instrument, if not going around the stage being a total badass. Even when Gaga wears giant wigs, 12 inch heels, and enormous hats that cover her face 👀
It's unfair, they chose the videos where Gaga shows more vocal vocal technique, and they are actually covers, she doesn't always sing like that, why? They did not put bad romance or other pop songs, which she always sings. Sia always shows her full potential in every song, Gaga doesn't. Another big difference, Sia touches your soul when she sings and transmits a lot, lady gaga will never do it.
Technique wise, Gaga.

Nicky McThicky Gaga definitely has emotion in her voice but Sia’s unique tone, vocal breaks, phrasing, and fast vibrato definitely gives her more soul and emotion in her voice than Gaga and majority of other singers
Gaga sounds like she's acting the songs while Sia sounds like she's living the emotions in the songs which is something I love to hear from the singer.

For an artist who runs away from fame, an introvert who hates exposure, not an extrovert like Gaga, Sia has many accomplishments and awards, she is a record breaker in many musical areas (use google to find out if you really want to be informed). And let's not forget that Sia came from indie music, a more niche genere, she went full pop in 2014. She is not interested in awards and being on red carpets every day and yet she is big - because she can't hide her huge talent. (And yes, Sia is a multigenre stage performer: jazz, indie, alternative, pop, pop-rock)

I feel these two are really hard to compare because there style and songs are just soooo different. Like lady Gaga ( generally is a lot quicker singing ) where a sia is much slower.. and these clips also aren’t the best.
I think the diction is not clear in Chandelier because it's a song about her drinking days. So she's tipsy and wants to swing from the chandelier , meaning she was suicidal. Makes perfect sense and gets me every time.

You said you were basing this battle off of what was technically better for that particular singer, yet you criticized Gaga putting on a character, growling, and sounding a bit shouty. i have to agree here. I have followed gaga for years, and if you look her up even as stephani germanotta her style hasnt changed. The strength and range has improved, but her style, is the same.
