  • 05/11/2021 Cedar Falls, Ia. Out for a ride with the dogs and I stumbled across this Iowa Northern passenger car move. I didn't have my camera or radio with me at the time so I had to turn around and get them. I caught the train just in time as it was headed over First street. Still not sure why they stored this car at their old railyard over night. The car was back on the move the next morning, most likely headed North up their line. Always a nice sight to see train action in front of the old Rock Island depot in downtown Cedar Falls!!

I was just checking out some of your older videos and ran across this gem! What a great surprise to be able to see this! I've seen a couple trains on those tracks, but never a passenger train. If that had been my backyard where it stopped...just try to keep me from boarding that train!! LOL I don't care where a train is going, if I can ride it, I will !! Many years ago when my in-laws were still alive, we rode the Star Clipper dinner train out of Waverly and that was so much fun!! When it went out of business, we were visiting at the time they held an auction for all things Star Clipper and I now own a star shaped paper punch, what they used to punch the tickets with! It's one of my special treasures!!

You went back aways softkitty! I was talking to a friend recently about the Star Clipper. I never got to experience it, but it sounded fun. Glad you got some memorabilia. Unfortunately it sounds like the tracks will be torn up in down town Cedar Falls soon.

@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 I guess they don't need those tracks there anymore? I had a lil bit of a panic attack when I didn't see Maid-Rite, then realized it is on 4th, a block over from the library. With all the new construction downtown, I thought for a moment that it had been taken out. I hope they wouldn't do that, tho! So many great memories of meals there with my father-in-law.

This video popped up randomly on RUclips. Glad it did. Any idea how long the Cedar River was stored at CF Utilities?

It is a good thing that you had time to go back home and grab your camcorder so that you could record this passenger car movement. As the train pulled into that yard, I noticed the windows on the end of the passenger car by the GP end engine. It looked like those windows could be used for track inspection as the passenger car moved along the tracks. It was kind of hard to see the windows on that end of the car when the train was passing the old Rock Island station because that end of the car was too dark to see. Did the crew detach the engines while the passenger car sat in the yard or were the engines left attached to the car. The conductor had to flag some crossings in this video too. The conductor did receive and assist with flagging the crossing from the Iowa Northern pick up truck with the flashing light. That short stretch of actual street running was interesting to see. Thank you for documenting this move and for sharing it with us, Red!

You're welcome Thomas! I make a point of just having the camera along now. That's a good point about the track inspection. They left the car hooked to the power overnight and left that next morning. Pretty nice car for a track inspection car. A lot of people seemed pleased to see that train rolling downtown!

That car is the Iowa Northern Business Car. The window you are referring to is the observation window. The IANR doesn’t own any track inspection cars. Usually the car is pulled out of the shed in Manly for business meetings/guest tours for prospective businesses

Yep! If CFU started burning coal again you would see even more trains downtown.

There was a passenger train in front of that depot in 2013-14 for a special event. NRHS or something

Awesome video. I wonder what it was like when the Route Rock was still running and there were more trains running along that line? Probably very noisy for all those homes??

Thanks Michael! I'm sure downtown Cedar Falls is glad that line isn't the mainline anymore. They run the horn a lot and really guard the crossings close down there.
