To make a box cake more like bakery cake. Add 2 extra eggs, substitute the water for milk. Whip the canned frosting and it will make it fluffy and you will double the frosting.
Get a 4-H you learn to bake and make those brownies, and from a you learn to cook book, make the baked chicken. When the chicken is done I add 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup (diluted with 1 can of water) put back in oven and bake until the soup/gravy is bubbling. Serve over mashed potatoes or rice or egg noodles. Very good meal
My husband was good friends with the homemaking teacher for his highschool. She taught for 40 years. She said the only difference between a box mix and from scratch is the fact that you can't mess up the measurements. They are the exact same ingredients. You can tweak the box mix with little extras just as well. I had a friend that always added ch÷ry coke to her cake mix for extra moisture. Everyone has there own special tweaks that can be made to make it your own. I found out if your cake seems a bit dry or over cooked you can make simple syrup by putting sugar and water together in a glass measuring cup and heat it till the sugar dissolves. Take a pastry brush and brush the top of the cake. It soaks in and moisturizes the cake without changing the flavor of any cake.
Home made brownies are yummy. We grew up on home made from scratch. I still make my stuff from scratch. Use powder cocoa for home made brownies, chocolate cake also. Best chocolate cake I ever made and ate is the recipe on the back of the Hersheys cocoa container.

I love homemade anything over box. I love a good homemade brownie with bakers chocolate, not cocoa. Huge difference in taste and texture. Headed into fall, most comfort foods are good. Meatloaf, chili, enchiladas, spagetti, fried chicken, and breakfast foods for dinner are good options, too. You could make donuts, pastries, brownies, other type cakes, pound cake, chocolate cake, cookies, rice krispie treats. The look lou snapped at you for asking what do you want to lick" was priceless just like Kash saying "you". Moments to remember. Great video.

Good morning Dan and Lou! I can't wait until your next cooking show, LOL. I must say I'm addicted. Dan, you were saying you grew up poor, but I grew up the same way, and guess what? I truly believe we were the rich ones. It taught me to treasure each moment with my loved ones, not to be greedy, and that you can survive on less if you have to. Mom made tomato and wiener gravy with biscuits and grits! Sometimes we put it over rice or toast when we were really short-funded. We ate lots of gardens (they were big gardens, at least an acre) food. Would love to see you make what we called depression-era food. Maybe interview GiGi, Paw Paw, Lou for her side of the family, Jami, Etc. Just a thought, LOL.

Baking is a science. It a balance of flour leaveners and fats. Always measure exactly as said. Cooking is an art, it’s more flexible as long as you follow the technique. ❤
Next time,if there is a next time. Add 1/4 tsp of baking powder, add 1 to 2 more eggs, use butter instead of oil and milk instead of water. I also prefer adding more vanilla extract. It really doesn't take more than 2 mins to make these additions. Good luck Lou! When baking measurements have to be absolutely precise as otherwise it can mess up the recipe. In the future, don’t melt the butter. It should be softened so you can cream it together with the ingredients, that’s why it turned into crumbs rather than batter. Sorry, can’t help but give advice since I’ve been baking for years and used to make “cookie trays” with 25 different types. It was a process, but you learn a ton.😊❤ Dan, funniest Mac & cheese story ever. My husband’s ex-BIL when he was in his late teens decided to make a box of Kraft Mac and cheese. He filled the saucepan with the water, and proceeded to add EVERYTHING else. He misunderstood the directions and didn’t boil the noodles first and then drain them!🫣 Needless to say it was the most God awful pot of Mac soup!🤢😂
Our daughter done that 1st time she made her some & called me into kitchen & asked why it wasn't like mine & so gross..I knew she didn't boil water & cook macaroni for whatever minutes & drain it & I told her she about cried & called herself stupid I said no u not baby girl u just didn't read directions did u she said no I did what u did mom i said u did what u SAW me do as u were not always in here with me the whole time just towards end when mixing she said u right but I am stupid for not reading all directions & I said no u not baby girl I made lots of mistakes & still call grandma (I was prob 49 & she was only 15 ) plus your 1st time cooking it I should have stayed & helped but u wanted to do it by yourself we all learn by mistakes..so since then her cooking took off & we baked together alot more & she done more baking by self with lil help since about 8 to 10 yrs old as we would bake together since was very young as my mom (RIP) & I did it alot but now she has a 5 yr old daughter & when they lived here until she was 4 1/2 Peanut mommy & Nana would bake alot from age 2 than age 3 1/2 it was just Nana & Peanut & they still bake alot together & we bake when they come & stay or if just Peanut as that's what Nana can do as can't get down on floor to play or do alot outside when nice as on walker 😢. I don't bake now since just hubby & I only when daughter & granddaughter here & they want to do it together. 😊

I made aprons for my 3 sisters, all unique with designs on front. It's a fun craft. When I use box cakes I always modify it, it tastes better.

FYI... Vanilla only needs 2 ingredients. A good vanilla can elevate your baking and I see how Dan has a bit of the scientist and artist in his cooking. So I thought that I'd share this. Ina Garden is a well respected chef and the recipe for her vanilla extract follows. INA GARTEN'S VANILLA Ingredients * 12 vanilla beans * 1 bottle vodka Directions Combine the vanilla beans and vodka in a jar tall enough to hold the vanilla beans. Allow the mixture to sit at room temperature for at least a month until the vodka becomes vanilla extract and the beans are soft enough to cut the end and squeeze the seeds out. Add more vanilla or beans, as needed. The extract can sit at room temperature indefinitely. 🙂 I'm planning to make a batch for this year's holiday baking. Thanks for another interesting video.
I don't think I've ever make a homemade yellow cake. I have used from the box cake. I do like homemade chocolate , apple sauce, German chocolate, white and poke cake, and many more. The cakes looked good . Just by looking the homemade looked the best. Thankyou have a good one. Brownies are easy to make Lou and are delicious.❤❤❤

When baking it is important to always follow the recipe. Whenever I make Kraft Mac & Cheese from the box I always put in 3 slices of American cheese besides the dry packet of cheese. It makes it extra cheesey. Lou - I have watched every episode of Cooking with Dan and Lou, haven't missed a single one. I've also watched many of Daniel Morrow Outdoors. I personally liked the baking episode, I think you can do those every now and then, or even a bunch of episodes in a row with different baked items. Maybe seasonal recipes, like Fall recipes, and Christmas is coming up and there are a LOT of great baking recipes for then. Just keep cooking or baking and laughing!!!
I'm with you Lou! My granny always said, "Life is short- Eat desserts First!" And so I do with my family. I take after Granny. We both have sweet tooths, lol. 😅 Also my trick with box cake mixes is to add Vanilla to give it a homemade flavor. Switch the oil for butter (now should be the greater amount, 1 cup) and the water to the lesser (1/3 cup?) amount. Makes it more moist. And add in an extra egg for volume. Also to answer Dan's question- if you use grass fed butter (which is much more yellow) and farm fresh eggs that have been fed marigolds, then it will give the cake a brighter yellow color! Or you could add a few drops yellow food color. 😊

I enjoyed this baking episode. I always add butter instead of oil and milk instead of water to a box mix. Makes it taste more like a bakery cake. Sometimes I add an additional egg (4 instead of 3).😊
The box mix adds food coloring to make it more yellow. The homemade one got it's color from the ingredients in the cake naturally. Farm fresh eggs tend to be a deeper yellow then store bought so using farm fresh might have helped making it more yellow, without using food coloring.
When I grew up we had butter noodles, as well mac & cheese my mom would add spam and peas in with it. She would also make spam and brown sugar. My dad worked on a dairy farm so we would always have fresh milk and mom would make our butter. It was hard for us, but we had no idea we were poor. We didn't know any better. We had close and food to eat, roof over our heads ,outside to play and we loved it. I wouldn't of traded it for anything. I'm 69 now and to this day I still once a year make my mom's fryed potatoes and creamed corn. I could go on for hours, but I won't. But I did have a great time growing up. I'm so glad you guys are making food videos. Thank you so much. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH.
Finally a recipe that you don't have to worry about Dan dropping something on the floor and trying to add it back in. Who remembers when Lou took the bacon away from him that he picked up off the floor. Dan you live on the farm and walk through feces that end up on your floor!
Some measuring spoons are very hard to read. You can buy a coloured paint pen and write the measurements with it, bigger, as to be able to read it. Make sure your vanilla is pure not extract. The longer pure vanilla sits in your cupboard, the flavour intensifies. Some recipes call for mixing softened butter, not microwaved, with sugar. Cookies are a good example if this. Those are where you usually have to mix wet and dry ingredients separately. The reason you should do you crack eggs separately is eggs can go bad or you drop shells on. Some do each egg separately, then put in the bowl. Baking is more precise. Measurements should be exact, according to the experts. And depending where you live, you may have to add extra ingredients and time. This has to do with the seas level and mountains. Next time, if you bake from a box, see if there are any hacks. Butter instead of oil, milk instead of water, extra egg(s) depending on the size. Adding vanilla and if doing a chocolate cake, adding coffee but only a little. And it can be just the powder from instant or espresso. The brownie double chocolate mix available from Costco is very good. If your doing brownies, those could be your boxed. I make boxed mac and cheese exactly from the box directions but I don’t like mac and cheese at all. But my sons doesn’t care, as long as it tastes good.
Both cakes look good. Homemade usually is fluffier, not quite as dense. But the box mixes have improved greatly over the years. I admit I generally just do a box cake, less mess, less dishes and in the oven in a few minutes. I do love a homemade cake with homemade frosting and will make one once in a while.
I love your cooking episodes! Do not run out of ideas, it coming up to soup season, just a thought. Oh and Lou, you find bakers chocolate in the baking aisle and some have brownie recipes on the box. (Follow the directions exactly and they are great!)
Hey guys 🙋🏻 both cakes looked beautiful but I would have chose the home made cake also ! I think the couple of extra minutes to put it together is worth the effort , but that’s just my opinion ! Thanks Dan for telling us your secret to creamy Mac and cheese , so I guess mine is as creamy as yours cause I drain my macaroni in a colander and shake the noodles real good before I put it back in the pot to mix up !! I look so forward to y’all’s cooking show every week and can’t wait to see what y’all cook the next week ! As for what to cook next , just look at some recipes and find ones y’all would like to try or already like but don’t know how to make ! Like stir-fry dishes are easy to make , pot roast with potatoes and carrots are easy just put the pot roast in the slow cooker in the morning with a cup of water and a can of cream of mushroom soup , salt and pepper and let it cook all day and add the potatoes and carrots the last 2 hrs , it makes its own juice/gravy to serve with it over cornbread , really just anything y’all want to cook everyone will love I’m sure!! I always loved our homemade cake, bread, rolls, doughnuts, & other things. My great aunt always made something homemade everyday. Loved her homemade noodles. I miss her sooo much. Miss her homemade angel food cake everyday. Even her egg custards. Kash was so cute at the end he came to you Dan and said you he wanted you.

Dan you were going to do different amounts for your salt, sugar, vanilla but those 3 really can't change except maybe less sugar if you didn't want it too sweet. Someone mentioned you had too much baking powder but you followed the direction on that one. Levi cuddling Bri and Stephanie was cute. I wish they would try and get him to eat some of the meals he may like them. But he is his own person so not liking certain foods I can see that. I add a couple eggs also and baking it in a bundt pan seems to help hold it together better too.

I always put a package of vanilla pudding in my cake batter and it makes it really good. It makes it turn yellow too.

I do that too! Along with whole milk for the water and adding an extra egg.

Baking is a science. It a balance of flour leaveners and fats. Always measure exactly as said. Cooking is an art, it’s more flexible as long as you follow the technique. ❤
Next time,if there is a next time. Add 1/4 tsp of baking powder, add 1 to 2 more eggs, use butter instead of oil and milk instead of water. I also prefer adding more vanilla extract. It really doesn't take more than 2 mins to make these additions. Good luck

When baking measurements have to be absolutely precise as otherwise it can mess up the recipe. In the future, don’t melt the butter. It should be softened so you can cream it together with the ingredients, that’s why it turned into crumbs rather than batter. Sorry, can’t help but give advice since I’ve been baking for years and used to make “cookie trays” with 25 different types. It was a process, but you learn a ton.😊❤
Dan, funniest Mac & cheese story ever. My husband’s ex-BIL when he was in his late teens decided to make a box of Kraft Mac and cheese. He filled the saucepan with the water, and proceeded to add EVERYTHING else. He misunderstood the directions and didn’t boil the noodles first and then drain them!🫣 Needless to say it was the most God awful pot of Mac soup!🤢😂

Our daughter done that 1st time she made her some & called me into kitchen & asked why it wasn't like mine & so gross..I knew she didn't boil water & cook macaroni for whatever minutes & drain it & I told her she about cried & called herself stupid I said no u not baby girl u just didn't read directions did u she said no I did what u did mom i said u did what u SAW me do as u were not always in here with me the whole time just towards end when mixing she said u right but I am stupid for not reading all directions & I said no u not baby girl I made lots of mistakes & still call grandma (I was prob 49 & she was only 15 ) plus your 1st time cooking it I should have stayed & helped but u wanted to do it by yourself we all learn by mistakes..so since then her cooking took off & we baked together alot more & she done more baking by self with lil help since about 8 to 10 yrs old as we would bake together since was very young as my mom (RIP) & I did it alot but now she has a 5 yr old daughter & when they lived here until she was 4 1/2 Peanut mommy & Nana would bake alot from age 2 than age 3 1/2 it was just Nana & Peanut & they still bake alot together & we bake when they come & stay or if just Peanut as that's what Nana can do as can't get down on floor to play or do alot outside when nice as on walker 😢. I don't bake now since just hubby & I only when daughter & granddaughter here & they want to do it together. 😊

Good Morning to both of you 😊. Lou, get some cute small patches and put near the neckline so we can see how cute it looks. Also, will identify that apron is yours. Fabric paint works well also. I made aprons for my 3 sisters, all unique with designs on front. It's a fun craft.
When I use box cakes I always modify it, it tastes better.

FYI... Vanilla only needs 2 ingredients. A good vanilla can elevate your baking and I see how Dan has a bit of the scientist and artist in his cooking. So I thought that I'd share this.
Ina Garden is a well respected chef and the recipe for her vanilla extract follows.
INA GARTEN'S VANILLA
Ingredients
* 12 vanilla beans
* 1 bottle vodka
Directions
Combine the vanilla beans and vodka in a jar tall enough to hold the vanilla beans. Allow the mixture to sit at room temperature for at least a month until the vodka becomes vanilla extract and the beans are soft enough to cut the end and squeeze the seeds out. Add more vanilla or beans, as needed. The extract can sit at room temperature indefinitely.

I don't think I've ever make a homemade yellow cake. I have used from the box cake. I do like homemade chocolate , apple sauce, German chocolate, white and poke cake, and many more. The cakes looked good . Just by looking the homemade looked the best. Thankyou have a good one. Brownies are easy to make Lou and are delicious.❤❤❤

When baking it is important to always follow the recipe. Whenever I make Kraft Mac & Cheese from the box I always put in 3 slices of American cheese besides the dry packet of cheese. It makes it extra cheesey. Lou - I have watched every episode of Cooking with Dan and Lou, haven't missed a single one. I've also watched many of Daniel Morrow Outdoors. I personally liked the baking episode, I think you can do those every now and then, or even a bunch of episodes in a row with different baked items. Maybe seasonal recipes, like Fall recipes, and Christmas is coming up and there are a LOT of great baking recipes for then. Just keep cooking or baking and laughing!!!

I'm with you Lou! My granny always said, "Life is short- Eat desserts First!" And so I do with my family. I take after Granny. We both have sweet tooths, lol. 😅
Also my trick with box cake mixes is to add Vanilla to give it a homemade flavor. Switch the oil for butter (now should be the greater amount, 1 cup) and the water to the lesser (1/3 cup?) amount. Makes it more moist. And add in an extra egg for volume.
Also to answer Dan's question- if you use grass fed butter (which is much more yellow) and farm fresh eggs that have been fed marigolds, then it will give the cake a brighter yellow color! Or you could add a few drops yellow food color. 😊

I enjoyed this baking episode. I always add butter instead of oil and milk instead of water to a box mix. Makes it taste more like a bakery cake. Sometimes I add an additional egg (4 instead of 3).😊
The box mix adds food coloring to make it more yellow. The homemade one got it's color from the ingredients in the cake naturally. Farm fresh eggs tend to be a deeper yellow then store bought so using farm fresh might have helped making it more yellow, without using food coloring.
When I grew up we had butter noodles, as well mac & cheese my mom would add spam and peas in with it. She would also make spam and brown sugar. My dad worked on a dairy farm so we would always have fresh milk and mom would make our butter. It was hard for us, but we had no idea we were poor. We didn't know any better. We had close and food to eat, roof over our heads ,outside to play and we loved it. I wouldn't of traded it for anything. I'm 69 now and to this day I still once a year make my mom's fryed potatoes and creamed corn. I could go on for hours, but I won't. But I did have a great time growing up. I'm so glad you guys are making food videos. Thank you so much. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH.

Some measuring spoons are very hard to read. You can buy a coloured paint pen and write the measurements with it, bigger, as to be able to read it. Make sure your vanilla is pure not extract. The longer pure vanilla sits in your cupboard, the flavour intensifies. Some recipes call for mixing softened butter, not microwaved, with sugar. Cookies are a good example if this. Those are where you usually have to mix wet and dry ingredients separately. The reason you should do you crack eggs separately is eggs can go bad or you drop shells on. Some do each egg separately, then put in the bowl. Baking is more precise. Measurements should be exact, according to the experts. And depending where you live, you may have to add extra ingredients and time. This has to do with the seas level and mountains. Next time, if you bake from a box, see if there are any hacks. Butter instead of oil, milk instead of water, extra egg(s) depending on the size. Adding vanilla and if doing a chocolate cake, adding coffee but only a little. And it can be just the powder from instant or espresso. The brownie double chocolate mix available from Costco is very good. If your doing brownies, those could be your boxed. I make boxed mac and cheese exactly from the box directions but I don’t like mac and cheese at all. But my sons doesn’t care, as long as it tastes good.
Both cakes look good. Homemade usually is fluffier, not quite as dense. But the box mixes have improved greatly over the years. I admit I generally just do a box cake, less mess, less dishes and in the oven in a few minutes. I do love a homemade cake with homemade frosting and will make one once in a while.

Hey guys 🙋🏻 both cakes looked beautiful but I would have chose the home made cake also ! I think the couple of extra minutes to put it together is worth the effort , but that’s just my opinion ! Thanks Dan for telling us your secret to creamy Mac and cheese , so I guess mine is as creamy as yours cause I drain my macaroni in a colander and shake the noodles real good before I put it back in the pot to mix up !! I look so forward to y’all’s cooking show every week and can’t wait to see what y’all cook the next week ! As for what to cook next , just look at some recipes and find ones y’all would like to try or already like but don’t know how to make ! Like stir-fry dishes are easy to make , pot roast with potatoes and carrots are easy just put the pot roast in the slow cooker in the morning with a cup of water and a can of cream of mushroom soup , salt and pepper and let it cook all day and add the potatoes and carrots the last 2 hrs , it makes its own juice/gravy to serve with it over cornbread , really just anything y’all want to cook everyone will love I’m sure!! Great video guys. My MIL used to make homemade cakes and homemade icing. She used lard and sugar and food coloring for the icing. I was shocked she used lard, but it was delicious!! ❤
I always loved our homemade cake, bread, rolls, doughnuts, & other things. My great aunt always made something homemade everyday. Loved her homemade noodles. I miss her sooo much. I always add a 1/3 cup of mayonnaise to every box cake or box brownies! It makes them so moist and delicious!!

Good morning Daniel and Lou. This was fun to watch. Dan you were going to do different amounts for your salt, sugar, vanilla but those 3 really can't change except maybe less sugar if you didn't want it too sweet. Someone mentioned you had too much baking powder but you followed the direction on that one. Levi cuddling Bri and Stephanie was cute. I wish they would try and get him to eat some of the meals he may like them. But he is his own person so not liking certain foods I can see that.
