There are a lot of meanings in the staging, starting with the key words "Heart of steel", which were inspired by the heroic defenders of Mariupol, whose last resistance base was at the steel plant Azovstal (AzovSteel) with very deep bomb shelters. And radioactivity sign is also a symbol of constant ruZZia's nuclear threats, including taking over Chornobyl and Zaporizhska nuclear power plants by ruZZian invaders, shelling at the nuclear plant, and regular threats of using a nuclear weapon by terrorist state ruZZia. The lyrics can be interpreted in different ways and the brilliant staging links them to today's reality of war and genocide against Ukraine.
Actually an interesting detail is, the "middle finger" part can be about that one episode during the Snake Island battle, when a Ukrainian soldier said "go fuck yourself" to a russian on a ship, that was threatening to occupy the island. After a couple of months, UkrPoshta (Ukrainian Mail service) published a postage stamp with a soldier on the Snake Island showing his middle finger to the ship. It's just a theory, but I still think it's quite possible what inspired the quote

When I saw the title of the song, I immediately thought about the defenders of Azovstal. I have same thoughts about the meaning of the lyrics and performance.
The song is a grower. It is unusual for Eurovision but very well written and arranged. I am sure it will be polished even more, and if Ukraine managed to put on such an exciting show with excellent sound and creative visuals at the underground station during a blackout after a massive missile attack by terrorist state ruZZia, their Liverpool performance will be great. I didn't watch the show, but from what I have seen - Ukraine continues to amaze me! The fact that they were able to pull that off in their current circumstances, is just a testiment to their passion for Eurovision and the reason why the contest was started to unite Europe. I like the song they chose, but I didn't expect anything less. They've always sent high quality things (even though I wasn't the biggest fan of Go_A, I still totally get why that came 5th). It's gonna be great to see this on the stage in Liverpool in May, and celebrating their 2022 win
they sing about the war, about the fact that despite the missiles of our neighbor - the russian federation, constant shelling of Ukrainian cities, we are strong, we have hearts of steel. The song has a hint of the battles near Mariupol (Donetsk region 🇺🇦). The city was completely destroyed by the russian federation. Mariupol was once an industrial center for steel production. It was at the Azovstal steel plant that the last heavy battles for the city took place. The city was surrounded by all the forces of the russian federation, bombs from airplanes, shelling from the Sea of Azov, it was destroyed along with its inhabitants. But the russians could not defeat the defenders of Mariupol militarily. song Heart of steel - text Sometimes gotta let it go Sometimes gotta look away Sometimes you just gotta know When to stick your middle finger up in the air I cannot explain Tell you how I feel Life is just a game And I'm playing for the win Don't be scared to say just what you think 'Cause no matter how bad, someone's listening Don't care what you say Don't care how you feel Get out of my way 'Cause I got a heart of steel (Don't care what you say Or how you feel Oh I got a heart of steel) You just like to act a fool Trynna get in my head like When I turn on my headlights I can see right through you Trynna get a reaction I just hit the action move You know I can never lose You like the attention too This has never been about you Don't be scared to say just what you think 'Cause no matter how bad, someone's listening Don't care what you say Don't care how you feel Get out of my way 'Cause I got a heart of steel (Don't care what you say Or how you feel Oh I got a heart of steel Don't care what you say Or how you feel Oh I got a heart of steel) radiation symbolism was also present in the design of the scene. Because the russian federation constantly threatens the whole world with atomic bombs. In Ukraine, the russian federation seized the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (Prypyat). Now the russian federation has seized the Zaporizhzhya NPP. This station is now disconnected from the power supply, the cooling of the reactors is running on generators. If there is an explosion at this station, it will be a disaster for Europe and the whole world. despite all these threats, the entire civilized world is putting up a powerful resistance to evil. Was very surprised it won, like you I thought we would get a tie for first after the jury vote. Am very happy for them, it's a decent song with a good message and they had the best staging on the night by far. I read through some of the comments on the official video and other reactors and I saw quite a lot of Ukrainians saying they voted for it simply because it was different and they specifically didn't want something similar to what they'd sent in recent years. Which would explain Tvorchi's massive televote win - they got 54000 votes against Jerry's 45000 and Krutb's 33000. I agree it will probably end left side but it's not a winner I think
I didn't see the full show, but judging by the clips of the songs it's really impressive what Ukraine pulled off under these circumstances. The staging is spot on. About the song; it's not the best that we've seen from Ukraine in recent years, but it's respectable and well-performed.

Lithuania's band Skamp a long time ago also had a mixed race man (Lit mother, Mali father) representing who was also then part of LT United in 2006 - his name is Viktoras Diawara. Lithuania had quite a few foreign and mixed race performers and singers in their national selections over the years I think, but not too many winners yet.
@@ESCTom Thanks for the tip Tom. I commented but it looks like RUclips removed it. I looked at the [insert the website name here] and they had some cool stuff. I might treat myself to a couple of hats.
Eh, the song is fine. It's like a Swedish entry actually, it might do well. Not my thing at all but the staging is completely amazing and definitely Ukrainian and if it's about Azovstal, then please take the international stage indeed. The funny thing is that krutь never touched me, even though it's totally up my musical street, I think I listened to it like onnce and a half, but I woke up this morning with the entire chorus in my head remembering every note and now that's it, it's going on repeat
yea and if the staging is like this in a metro station, imagine what the final show will be. I think it might be the best staging this year. Also i saw they won a Ukrainian fashion award last year, so they are clearly very on top of their styling. Ill download krutь but i think its telling that i immediately downloaded 99 and with this i dont feel the same rush. Who was your favourite then? Fiinka?
@@ESCTom it was actually Jerry Heil but I wasn't overattached to any of them. I guess the lyrics of lullaby hit me belatedly as it's now very personal to me... Won't say more in public. Finka was a great concept, but I couldn't really get into it. Tbh any of them would do fine to well on the day anyway. The rest was pretty bad. I mean I listen to Ukrainian music all the time and it's much higher standard in general.
Vidbir was great. A real celebration of modern and cultural music that doesn't necessarily fit in to a mold, rather breaking it. That said, I don't honestly care for this song at all. For me, the melody just plods along and literally gets nowhere. The lyrics are goodz but the visuals are the real elevation here. Not for me. Good to see you again Tom. I never bother with Junior Eurovision, so I missed all those videos.
ah no problem, yea JESC isnt for everyone, although this year was better than the average yea i get the plodding thing and agree that the visuals work to alleviate that looking forward to eurovision season! Im going to try and navigate the copyrigth nightmare that is benidorm fest tomorrow
Personally I don’t care for this song much but the visuals really do elevate it hugely. They give it much deeper meaning. It’s gripping to watch and that helps me understand why Ukraine chose it. But the song itself, is ok until the chorus hits, and the chorus doesn’t live up to expectations. This weak chorus is offset by the strong visuals, but still leaves me feeling disappointed with the song. Jerry Heil or Fiinka could have done well at Eurovision. I’m disappointed that this was chosen Instead
I agree the visuals elevated the song, but this song is not for me. I was surprised that Ukraine didn't go for something more "traditional" but you're right; Ukraine does try to send things that are different. I feel that same way about Portugal and sometimes they hit for me (MARO) and sometimes they miss for me (Conan Isiris). But good for the countries that take risks.
we chose somebody who sings live well. Most of the songs this year are about war as you could expect and it's not allowed in EVC, also our budgets are exhausted bc everything goes to the army, so I guess not many singers could apply this year. I don't like the song, but he was the only one with good vocals and style also. We don't choose folk just for folk, we choose folk because it sounds good, but this year folk artists were not good enough
Feel like the song is just a bit of a snooze honestly. Melodically it's not gripping and while the production has a decent oomph to it, there's no real second gear anywhere. Given that this Vidbir was oddly weak I can see how it won, but I don't think it has much potential. Ukraine can stage the crap of 3 minutes of utter silence, so they should still be good for a final spot, but I don't see it making any waves beyond that. Bit disappointed all in all.
Agree. My guess is that Ukraine just don't want the expense of hosting Eurovision in 2024. They want to use their budget for other things, understandably.
@@cultfiction3865 Yes, true. But maybe they changed their minds? I don't know. It is clear that they don't want to win when they pick such a bland and generic song, when they had more interesting and better songs that they could have sent instead. I'm not saying it's a wrong tactic. My own country Sweden does that too. If we don't want to host, we send something really bland and uninteresting so not too many people vote for us.
@@nian60 The words about the intention to host Eurovision this year in Ukraine were just words. Obviously, this was an unrealistic task. Both from the point of view of ensuring security, and from the point of view of ensuring domestic comfort, such as the uninterrupted availability of electricity, etc. All this also cannot be guaranteed next year, so it's not just about money, there are more serious restrictions. As for the choice of song, people are simply tired of the fact that every year artists rely on ethnic motives. Inside the country, many people think that ethno every year is monotonous. In addition, the ethnosongs at this Vidbir did not convey the right messages. The song Tvorchi (text and visual) is much more in line with what Ukrainians would like to say on their behalf now. Even if the melody just drags on, as mentioned above, the visual and textual messages make up for this shortcoming. In addition, the jury advised Tvorchi to finalize the melody and perhaps the group will listen to the advice of the jury and in the final we will hear another version of this song.
@@НаталяМандра-э9к Aha, OK. Thanks for the info. The song will probably finish quite high anyway, even if it doesn't win. I would have preferred a song in Ukrainian but of course more people will understand the message if it's in English. Yes I thought about the security issue. If the orcs are still being aggressive next July - August, and Ukraine had won in May, then a second alternative host country have to be picked again. Personally I wouldn't have minded but maybe Ukrainians don't want others to host for them 2 years in a row.

Sometimes gotta let it go
Sometimes gotta look away
Sometimes you just gotta know
When to stick your middle finger up in the air
I cannot explain
Tell you how I feel
Life is just a game
And I'm playing for the win
Don't be scared to say just what you think
'Cause no matter how bad, someone's listening
Don't care what you say
Don't care how you feel
Get out of my way
'Cause I got a heart of steel
(Don't care what you say
Or how you feel
Oh I got a heart of steel)
You just like to act a fool
Trynna get in my head like
When I turn on my headlights
I can see right through you
Trynna get a reaction
I just hit the action move
You know I can never lose
You like the attention too
This has never been about you
Don't be scared to say just what you think
'Cause no matter how bad, someone's listening
Don't care what you say
Don't care how you feel
Get out of my way
'Cause I got a heart of steel

I'm just here to say you look great in that hat
Im surprised I was like wooooow watching the results i like the performance but I can't listen to the song without the performance i don't know if that's a good or bad thing. Also benny cristo is Angolan/czech completely forgot about him
Oh yea I guess I don’t really think of Czechia as Eastern Europe so much, although it is.
Guess Dave Benton counts as well but that was a long time ago
Lithuania's band Skamp a long time ago also had a mixed race man (Lit mother, Mali father) representing who was also then part of LT United in 2006 - his name is Viktoras Diawara. Lithuania had quite a few foreign and mixed race performers and singers in their national selections over the years I think, but not too many winners yet.
Hey, did you buy that pink hat at the auction that Kalush held after Eurovision? 🙂
i bought it from a website called Shkoura, they make authentic Kalush hats 😊
@@ESCTom oh ok, that’s cool👍😎
I never bother with Junior Eurovision, so I missed all those videos.
ah no problem, yea JESC isnt for everyone, although this year was better than the average
yea i get the plodding thing and agree that the visuals work to alleviate that
looking forward to eurovision season!
Ви вже задовбали своєю Джеррі Хейл !
Вона не пройшла ! Забудьте !
Тим більше Фіінка , яка вживу заспівала дуже погано !
🇺🇦❤️
It's a fine song. This doesn't stand a chance at winning, though. Hope they have fun.
It has a chance to win, just as all other performers' songs. It's always so unpredictable..
You ned to react to the video of Pure by Gjon's Tears, lets just say he has done it again.
will do, ill wait until theres a small gap tho cos I still have to do estonia and spains songs
@@ESCTom No rush
Needs to be enhanced. Too short and too repetitive
theres plenty of time for a revamp
@@nian60 They wanted to host Eurovision this year though.
The truly great channel and good work, bro. Very nice review and reaction 💪
Oh... And that hat ☺️
