I was there last night - it sucks we lost but as Sports Illustrated has said, the FSU Marching Chiefs are the "Band That Never Lost a Halftime." Go Noles and GO CHIEFS!!
........Please don't misunderstand me. I still believe the Marching Chiefs are one of the premier marching ensembles in the country. She just mentioned how she felt new members were relying too much on their tradition and weren't putting in the work it took to get the band "there" to begin with. I completely understand where she's coming from. I have no doubt that Patrick will get you guys back up there. Good luck in everything that you do. G
A big "THANKS" to all of the Chiefs for a truly amazing halftime performance! I've been to many college games in the past 40+ years, & this was one of the very few times I can recall the halftime show (regular season game) receiving a standing ovation from the entire stadium! I totally agree that the video does not do justice to the live performance - you had to be there - it was I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E!!!!!!!
Gotta love Chiefs. Even when we had losing seasons, I liked to come back that our marching band could beat our opponents marching band. =) Love going to a great music school haha
I was at this game and was in total WOW when I experienced this performance. The half-time show alone was worth the tickets price. I considered it a bargain to watch such a great performance
OMG I have seen quite a few marching bands in performance and competition, but this is the first time one ever made the salt water ran down my face. Thank you for sharing this.
Im going to be a Marching Chief next year.WHOOOOOO FSU!!!!!!!!!!! I really wish i could have been there to perform that show. It was incredible. Good Job. Go Mello line
Just can't get enough of this video. Congrats to the Chiefs on a fabulous show. I watched "jxRWZLKGe70" and while that show was great also and the drill sharp, musically the Marching Chiefs just blow you away. The drill was nice, too, but the music.........thrilling at all the right moments and beautiful. And the "dance" wasn't bad either LOL. I think "Michael" would have loved your show. Thank you so much, "athaboi20" for posting this. MCATDT!!!!!!!!!!
This is when I wish I was an epic trumpet player!!!!! I have lots of work to do before I can get here. 2 years at Webber to get beastly and then will look to transfer to FSU. Go Noles! Football is just the extra, Marching Chiefs are the reason people buy a ticket!!!!
Thanks For Being On The Same Page As Me! I was Watching The Noles Game On Saturday Or Sunday ( I Cant Remember) But I wanted To See The Half-Time Show And They Completely Just Blabbed Through The Entire Time ):
AWESOMESAUCE!!!!!! @o@ SOOOO AMAZINGLY AWESOME! I really think there are no words for more than awesome or epic! I feel like I should be practicing harder at my marching and instrument, but marching is over until summer.
I have To Say, Being A high School Band Member And Watching My Drum Major Do The Thriller Dance In Class, The Video Is Amazing! Long Live Michael Jackson! :D
I'm only in HighSchool but our marching band is doing a Michael JAckson tribute show and we do thriller, billie jean, and beat it and we do the beat it dance and we don't get nearly as great as a reaction when we dance ;( lol but AWESOME
Just to clarify, chiefs do a new show every week with new drill and music. So all this is learned from Monday to Friday and performed on Saturday. So people saying "it needs to be cleaned" and "wish the drill was better" have no idea how hard it is. Besides, it's college matching band...not DCI. Don't forget, they're still students taking classes. Give em a break.
I love our dance team in the beginning. So fine. Too bad we couldnt pull out a win in this shootout. It's ok though, I'm still here 'Noles! Keep ballin. Too bad we cant see the bands on espn instead of hearing about how bad our defense is, we all know who the best band of the big 4 in the state is. Keep it real 'Noles!
Most of us were paying attention from up in the stands. Granted yes, I would have liked to see your show from the front, but you know how it is: when the Directors give you the get-the-hell-out-of-the-way-why-are-you-still-standing-there-why-would-you-do-that, you go :p
Usually pop tunes sound like shit when converted to marching band music, but they pulled this off fucking well. Good job, wish my band would learn that dance
@CallsignWhat Chiefs are not specifically a corps style band, all of the pre-game show is high-step. Many half time shows are high step, mostly depends on the music and the show. They also often glide step
@kavonc987 100 is another great band but not even close to touching the Chiefs. Chiefs have some of the best talent in the country and it really shows in this video.
Only in the US ! Over here in the UK we're boring we never have marching bands all except for the military one & they perform on armistice day and the changing of the guard although they hold concerts it costs us lots of money!
@jj8117 i watched florida's version on youtube and i don't think any band can go wrong with a michael jackson show. florida had a good routine but it was too long and the band seemed too stiff. i think it was more of the "awe" factor that made the chiefs show better. it was much more impressive watching 460 band members spread over the entire football field, dancing in unison.
As a former Chief myself, I know the "they were better when I was in the band" mentality, but in this case I cannot agree. I've been impressed with the Chiefs this year more than any in recent memory, and your claims of expertise do not apply when you are parsing sound quality captured on hand-held, consumer quality equipment. Unless you were physically at both performances or have some secret pro recordings of them, then you cannot possibly be able to accurately compare their quality.
We didn't stay on the field because you guys are MASSIVE and we wanted to get out of the way so that you could get off the sideline at the end. We play tuning sequence every 3rd Down we're on Defense. We always play The Horse after every game. Get over it. I'm not trying to be offensive - I'm from Florida and I've got mad respect for your band and I loved your show. But don't try to take it out on us just cause you lost.
Wrong. You add the "n" when the following word or acronym begins with a vowel. It doesn't make sense if it was "Must be an Florida State University thing." Doesn't it? Nice try.
yeah true i guess i should take up my complaints with your band director then haha. nothing you can do when you get told to leave, that's just not the way i would do things.
It was pretty good, but it needs to be cleaned up. It is always hard to incorporate dance moves into marching band because it is hard to have everything be precise.
yep, you're right, they merely did this performance just to copy USC. had absolutely nothing do with honoring the death of the king of pop and one of the greatest songs/videos of all time. And USC obviously invented those dance moves, not Michael Jackson.
I was there and I got the goosebumps and watching it on here made me feel it all over again! LOVE IT! Greatest half time show EVER!
Go Chiefs.
HOLY CRAP.......that is CRAZY LOUD!!!!
Awesome job FSU!!!!
I was there last night - it sucks we lost but as Sports Illustrated has said, the FSU Marching Chiefs are the "Band That Never Lost a Halftime."

I WAS THERE! SOOO AWESOME IN PERSON
Every time I watch this I can't help but remember how it felt to be on that field. I still get goose bumps, tear up, and start smiling! MCATDT
Gotta love Chiefs. Even when we had losing seasons, I liked to come back that our marching band could beat our opponents marching band. =)
Love going to a great music school haha

I was at this game and was in total WOW when I experienced this performance. The half-time show alone was worth the tickets price. I considered it a bargain to watch such a great performance

i was there, i have friends in the band and i had no idea they were gonna bust this out, it was awesome :)
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! One of the best college bands out there:)
that was RAW
Why did i miss this game? this was simply genius. Go Noles
This is when I wish I was an epic trumpet player!!!!! I have lots of work to do before I can get here. 2 years at Webber to get beastly and then will look to transfer to FSU. Go Noles! Football is just the extra, Marching Chiefs are the reason people buy a ticket!!!!

I can't believe that I left the game early... GAH!!! Thank you RUclips!!!
yeah i am a devoted gator fan but the chiefs are the freaking best. that was incredible!!!
dude im going to be a seminole in june if FSU is half as awesome as this i cant wait to go.
lol my thoughts exactly
The head drum major is my band director!! :D
wow, only 2 months after the USC band played this exact song with these exact dance moves, nice.
that was awesome
Wow, that was awesome.
I'm only in HighSchool but our marching band is doing a Michael JAckson tribute show and we do thriller, billie jean, and beat it and we do the beat it dance and we don't get nearly as great as a reaction when we dance ;(
lol but AWESOME
at least FSU has some talent on the football field
@321dwood We do. It's called Chief Step and it's a pain. 90 degree snap with toe pointed to ground. Mostly done only in the pre-game show.
Just to clarify, chiefs do a new show every week with new drill and music. So all this is learned from Monday to Friday and performed on Saturday. you have to try out first :)
That was so tight. FSU!!!
Most of us were paying attention from up in the stands. Granted yes, I would have liked to see your show from the front, but you know how it is: when the Directors give you the get-the-hell-out-of-the-way-why-are-you-still-standing-there-why-would-you-do-that, you go :p
They Killed It!
Usually pop tunes sound like shit when converted to marching band music, but they pulled this off fucking well. Good job, wish my band would learn that dance
Yes. Epic indeed.
They did is again at the Gator Bowl, awesome.
So proud.... Go Big 8!
And the crowd goes bat-shit INSANE.
:D
sure mr. bowden approved..great piece by a great band
Chiefs ROCK!!
omg.. maestro is even dancing
so coo!
actually we learned this in 8-9 days total (4 days one week 5 the next week) because the away game gives us an extra week to practice.
@CallsignWhat Chiefs are not specifically a corps style band, all of the pre-game show is high-step. Many half time shows are high step, mostly depends on the music and the show. They also often glide step
i will become one of them :D
That year I played flute, but I'm currently playing piccolo this year =]
EPIC
OMG!
I Has A Stalker xD
My son is playing in this.
@kavonc987 100 is another great band but not even close to touching the Chiefs. Chiefs have some of the best talent in the country and it really shows in this video.
Wow just great! Interesting that there's no pit.
How big are they?
Only in the US ! Over here in the UK we're boring we never have marching bands all except for the military one & they perform on armistice day and the changing of the guard although they hold concerts it costs us lots of money!
Yea... Go FSU..

F'N A....
what is "the horse" and is that what they were playing? yeah really disrespectful that they didn't stay to watch us perform.
As a former Chief myself, I know the "they were better when I was in the band" mentality, but in this case I cannot agree. hahaha how kool xD
Around 460 this year.
were you at the game?
yall need to check out ohio doing party rock anthem...
We didn't stay on the field because you guys are MASSIVE and we wanted to get out of the way so that you could get off the sideline at the end. We play tuning sequence every 3rd Down we're on Defense. We always play The Horse after every game. Get over it.

why are the tubas playing so low?. this i what i get for watching a non HBCU marching band on youtube
It's not 1 week practice.....It's about 2
youre forgetting the world revoles around USC
hahahahah
It was pretty good, but it needs to be cleaned up. It is always hard to incorporate dance moves into marching band because it is hard to have everything be precise.
How do you expect me to take you seriously with a Kanye West video in your profile?
yep, you're right, they merely did this performance just to copy USC. had absolutely nothing do with honoring the death of the king of pop and one of the greatest songs/videos of all time. And USC obviously invented those dance moves, not Michael Jackson.
FAMU has everyone beat at showmanship perhaps, but absolutely not at sound and musicality. And what exactly constitutes "better tradition?"
