I may be sad, tired ...maybe even a bit bitter but I can still remember being a kid riding around at Christmas time after dark and thinking all the houses you just "X'd" were the greatest and the tasteful ones were pretty but boring. If I can find the strength to toss a net of multi color bulbs over a shrub and plug in a Santa it's for the kiddos, not you, not me. We only have to look at it for a few weeks and I promise I'm the first one to take it down!

Our family Christmas is centered around memories, colored lights on the house is a personal memory for me. I think too many people have their personalities buried in "fads and fashion". I don't think a decorator should decide for me what Christmas should look like.

Wow. Giving her recommendations as a designer with lots of followers who come to her for advice is NOT "deciding for you". Take what you find helpful and leave the rest. Using a simplified pallet has been going on for as long as I can remember: my step-mother designed in the same way fifty years ago. As a child I did enjoy the multi-colored lights, but now I find white twinkle lights on a green tree to be both beautiful and soothing after a long, hectic, day. It's a real holiday for my eyes.

Sorry, Ms. Lisa, but I'm sticking with my 1960-ish multicolor c9 lights on my roof edge. They and my door wreath are all that's going on outside, so maybe that qualifies as edited. I got a big smile when you pointed out a simple wreath of red berries. I just bought the exact same wreath for my front door last week. I live in a suburb with lots of elders and very young families. No one is going to be cruising around at night looking at Christmas lights. We're going to be eating dinner early and then getting ready for a nice winter's sleep. I'm going to skip outdoor lighting altogether and limit myself to the one very beautiful wreath. It says Christmas with happy dignity, which I love. It's enough.

I agree, though I still like my old fashioned multi colored lights along the roof of my flat roofed ranch house. They are the only lights outside and suit the age of the house. I also use multi colored lights on my tree because they match my decorations (all different) I’ve collected over the years. I know these things aren’t trending but I like a folksy vibe.

I hope I'm never so "grown up" that all of these make sense. Too many lights, too many colors, lots of elements, decor in every room-all incredibly joyful to me and many. Who cares about trends and being fashionable at Christmas!?! I won't wear bells to mass or an ugly sweater, but if someone has inflatable Snoopy Santa and Frosty to bring some smiles then bring it on!

There is a divide among commenters here on the outdoor decorations. I like the multi-colored lights. I can handle the dense displays (on people's homes), especially if it's only lights. I think the point is that you stand for a while and look at all the 'themes'. I do not like inflatables, though.
There is a house I drive past regularly that had a life-like death and cemetery theme for Halloween, including skeletons on their knees praying. And now they have cutesy inflatables for Christmas! LOL, what a contrast.

As a child of the 70's, I love multi-colored C bulbs on my tree, but only on Christmas day, and maybe a day or two before and after. The rest of the time, I love the classic warm white lights, and minimal decor which could also be considered "winter decor", thus being left out long after Christmas is over. 😉

I agree with everything you said, Lisa. Inflatables look tacky and half of them "die" in front yards for various reasons which makes them look even worse. We need less plastic in this world of ours as well. Happy holidays!

Exactly. There are and will be hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of those things cluttering landfills with a portion of them winding up in waterways and the ocean. There are better ways to express the holiday spirit. Time to move on from the hackneyed look of tacky plastic inflatables and come up with some original festive yard decor.

No to inflatables. Not only are they eyesores, that fan is loud. I have my piece of pop culture that replaced my full size tree. It's a full size leg lamp on a wood crate my nephew made for me. I did purchase a tinsel tree for my kitchen table. An actual Formica chrome kitchen table with a red and white starburst pattern. Found out they make Santa hats for my Kit Cat Klock. My color choices are red and white. I make my own Christmas bows so nobody can duplicate my look. I will rehab old decor and customize it. My favorite display is my 1950s ceramics on my mom' 1960s China cupboard. Old California pottery Santa lantern, Mrs. Claus planter, and two ladies that look like White Christmas. I even display an old wooden sled on my front porch all as kids used to sled on. Add some live greenery and solar lights. It all looks tasteful despite the plastic leg in the window. I've seen too many over the top decorations along the years, so I agree with this list. I'm more of an arts and craft/ sewing type of decorator and don't really like the standard red & green combo, so I usually opt for gold and white and keep things simple.

I used to adore that old-style tinsel that we put on our trees sixty years ago (along with the multi-colored bubble lights) but as soon as I found out the danger to birds and other wild animals, I stopped using it altogether. It's not THAT pretty.

The Star Wars thing is understandable, because I associate Star Wars with Christmas too. I still have my remote controlled R2-D2 from the 70's that was part of the Star Wars themed presents my Mom came up with one year. Parents have a theme, your kids will never forget it!

  • @youbetcha108
    @youbetcha108 6 месяцев назад +8

I agree about the inflatables but if your little son is shopping with you for decorations and sees a big globe inflatable and wants to have it bc it makes him smile and makes Christmas magical do you say no? This metal Santa stake is chic. We can shine a light on it and done! Let’s get 5 of those. Nope not me. We get the globe! Christmas is for children. It’s the time we remember the most important baby of all. My biggest problem is getting all my white lights to look the same hue of white. I never saw a pink mustache on a car. 🤣. I guess I’m not a Designer decorator for Christmas. I have 2 inflatables. But I don’t buy them anymore bc the children are grown. Still I put them out bc they work and the children in the neighborhood like them. Once they bust though I will not replace them. Have a wonderful holiday season!!!

I live in a rural area. There is a very large front yard a couple miles from me that is FILLED with inflatables, mostly Santa style Peanuts characters. They have only one nearby neighbor. I can't help but wonder if that neighbor prays for the holidays to end so they don't have to see that spectacle every time they look out the window.😂Since I don't have to look at it all the time it's just an amusement on a country drive.

Ach Lisa, it is an uphill battle when it comes to trying to instill good taste and traditional values. Christmas in the US is an avalanche of plastic heading for the landfill and gaudy, electricity wasting, competitive displays. I much prefer the traditional European holiday decor of candles and natural materials that inspire peace and hope and gentle togetherness.

I don’t disagree overall especially since I too do the white lights and minimal outdoor (and indoor) decor and I got this from my mother who in the 50’s and 60’s always did designer trees and decor. And it’s since backfired on me with my kids (3 of them and 7 grandkids) who don’t want designer trees and lights. They want all of the rainbow colours and all the homemade decorations and memory making stuff. Apparently my Christmas decor was cold and too nice! LOL so go figure?! I say each to their own. Do what makes you happy. It’s a special time of the year and any way (without hurting anyone) you want is the right way. Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah to all!

With you on the inflatables. I’ve hated them since I was a kid. And the laser lights. I’ve always loved twinkly lights, though. All varieties. Even the rainbow ones. And I do enjoy looking at the people who go all out and just throw lights on every surface, even though I would never. (Though I promised my spouse we could do it at least once.)
